About a year ago, trumpeter Marquis Hill, now 28, went to Los Angeles, played five tunes for a panel of judges, and won the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition. You can think of it as a sort of Heisman Trophy for young jazz artists, meaning that a lot more people discovered his talent in a hurry.
His profile may have risen suddenly, but talent like that doesn't spontaneously emerge from nowhere. It takes a village of mentors, peers, opportunities, and other educational infrastructure to enable a musician to grow. That's especially true with jazz, an inherently social music historically conveyed through the oral tradition. Besides, in his hometown of Chicago, folks had already known about Marquis for some time: That's the "village" that raised him, after all.
Marquis Hill now splits his time between the Windy City and New York City, but still maintains a snappy working band full of catchy melodic ideas - a five-piece outfit he calls the Marquis Hill Blacktet. On one of his trips back home this summer, we asked him to show us "his" Chicago, culminating in a Blacktet performance downtown at one of the city's premier clubs: the Jazz Showcase.
Jazz Night In America travels to one of the great jazz cities to meet some of the people and places which made a young trumpeter from the South Side of Chicago into Marquis Hill.

This video got me in to jazz, I was in my room scrolling through UA-cam and I came across this video and I played and soon realized that I have never ever heard music with this kind of color and room for different feeling to co exist at the same time before, I am Ethiopian and for the reasons I don’t know it keeps remembering me some old songs and feelings from my tribe(Konso). After listening this tunes for 4 months non stop I bought a trumpet and I have been learning it for three months now and I am in love with jazz. I used to listen normal music but now my friends are looking at me like wtf are you listening bro, later I have started to listen different jazz artists and I am obsessed with jazz in general. Finally I want to thank Christian McBride for putting together this amazing video and also the artists in this, especially marquise hill who is my hero at the moment!

Lovely group, takes us back to Freddie and Lee. I really hope we can produce a few jazz STARS in this generation that deserve that label.

These guys can play, no doubt about it... but Jazz without swing is like Thanksgiving without turkey.

Straight time feel has gone so far that I could argue that anything that has rhythmic intention, lively pulse and freedom of rhythmic expression (playing laid back, on top of the beat ect) could be considered swinging. We could define swing to mean something that is moving. Not staying still. And phrasing in whatever meter, tempo or time feel creares that effect of forward motion. Because based on this straigt stuff their playing you can definitely swing by your standards. Lol
