John Lennon was such a great rock and roll singer, his power was phenomenal. When it’s double tracked the overtones and harmonics are so thick, you don’t really need anything else. Such a great sound. He also had one of the best ‘tender’ voices on ballads. Few people, if any, have expressed themselves better vocally than Mr Lennon. I could listen to him sing anything.
If you haven’t seen the Beatles Long Tall Sally Live at the NME Poll Winners 1964 then it gives you a glimpse of how it was for us when we 13 or 14 years old. Insane 😄
Second comment: what strikes me about both these songs is how tight the group is throughout - everything is nicely synced up, Ringo is rock solid as always, the vocals are timed great, the strumming and guitar solos are on the money. They’re playing like an engine.
Those are the songs that made us fall in love with The Beatles and their music. I was 14. My life changed that year. Music was kind of boring before they came along. Elvis went in the army and Rock had a bad reputation. The British invasion brought back Chuck Berry and Rock & Roll was back on top. Then came the Stones. What a great time to be alive.
My sister bought this album back then. She was born in 1943 (same as George Harrison) and I was born 10 years later. She loved the Beatles. I love the Beatles. Her kids, born in 1959, 61, and 63 are absolutely Beatles lovers because they were raised on the Beatles and (like me) will always love the Beatles. I say that you start listening to Meet the Beatles and stick to the years, just to hear how they evolved musically. It’s something to hear for sure… because there was nobody like the Beatles. ☮️💟🎼

When they were producing With The Beatles for Parlohone, The photographer asked the lads what they wanted the cover to look like. They returned to their memories of Hamburg where besides art student Voorman they were friends with Astrid Kirchherr who took a lot of famous artsy photos of the guys. She took several B/W images in an attic with dramatic side sighting. The Beatles suggested to their photographer to take their cover photo in a style Astrid used, and thus this famous B/W side lit photo resulted.
"WITH THE BEATLES (UK) / "MEET THE BEATLES" (USA) are my VERY FAVORITE Beatles' ALBUM COVERS, Thy are SO CLASSY and TOTALLY different from the mostly dull album covers for others at the time.
My first albums I purchased were from the Beatles. Takes me back to the dairy farm, pouring over my little phonograph hoping to catch each note and word. Forever memories of my later childhood. Thanks L33, for loving THE group of our past and present. Blessings and joy to all.
In 1963-64 the Beatles were still doing a lot of cover songs including the Chuck Berry song Roll Over Beethoven and the Marvelettes Please Mr. Postman. The Beatles covered a lot of American black girl group's records. In their early years before they had written a lot of songs they performed covers as did the other acts that performed on the same bill as them. Since many boy groups refrained from covering girl records, The Beatles realized that if they did they wouldn't have the problem of another band in the show doing the same song as they planned on doing.
These two tracks were excised from the AMERICAN Meet The Beatles LP. Nice that you are covering them. In 1964 when we bought Meet The Beatles, we didn't know we were getting shortchanged by Capitol, unless we had a relative that made trips to Britain and brought back copies of this Parlophone album. And in Arkansas where I lived we didn't have a lot of international business or diplomatic types that made overseas trips. I hear teens in Washington or New York were the envy of their peers, when they got an earlier copy of With the Beatles.
The Paul song "All My Loving" is my favorite on this album. It's kind of old-fashioned lyrics, even for '63, but it rocks out big time. Second place goes to George, "Don't Bother Me". George comes in with his first song having a little 'bad attitude'.
"Please Mr. Postman" was just one of the songs that made Capitol's "The Beatles' Second Album" such an incredible endorphin rush for me as a kid. Their music was literally addictive.
The first time that I ever heard these songs as well as some of the other songs that The Beatles covered was the Beatles' versions. Later when I heard the originals, my first reaction was, 'It's all wrong! They're (the original artists) doing it wrong!"
Lee- I thought you might enjoy this story. My nephew was in the same dorm at Brown Univ with George Harrison's son Dhani and they were friends. Dhani had an amazing vinyl collection and they'd all go to his room to listen to music. He was super chill. A guy asked him how he knew so much about music and Dhani said (do this with a British accent), "ah, me dad used to be in a band". 😂 low-key hilarious.
Our family's first Beatles album was called "Long Tall Sally", which was a uniquely Canadian release, and had the same cover as the album in the USA called "The Beatles' Second Album" although the songs are a little different.... both of these songs are on Long Tall Sally, and to say I've listened to them a thousand times is probably a gross understatement... these songs are stamped on my psyche... Because the Beatles later stuff evolved into something so incredible, people tend to overlook that fact their earlier stuff is freakin awesome... they were in their own league from the very beginning.. and I still have that album, and it still sounds amazing... yes, definitely react to With The Beatles
Beatles (and Stones) are my favorite versions of Roll Over Beethoven. George kills this. Long Tall Sally and Twist and Shout are just as good. L33, I really enjoyed your "when the music died" series. Similar ideas would be doing one for Sun Records in Memphis and then Chess Records in Chicago.
GREAT early covers!!! In America, this was on The Beatles’ Second Album btw. It was the first my older sister got. Therefore my first. We played that thing to death!! Completely different harmonies than we were used to. Highly singable! She Loves You was also on this one. But those covers!! ❤❤❤
For a glimpse into the genius of Ringo just listen to his use of the bass drum on Mr. Postman. So simple but absolutely perfect. Great music is built on simplicity. They were SO lucky to have him. Everything about this song is great but it is the bass drum that I hear whenever I play this album. It would be so easy to just play the standard 4/4 on this but Ringo added his genius here. Do you want to know why the Beatles were great? It is because ... they were great. Can't explain it. Gen Z is stuck with Taylor Swift and K-pop. So sad. But if it makes them happy good for them.
I want to share with you one discovery of a young talent. This girl amazes with her voice from a very young age. Many reactors have made thousands of reactions to her amazing voice. React or discover this phenomenon. To get acquainted, I recommend making a reaction to her performance at the age of 10. If you don’t see that there is a little girl in front of you, then you hear the voice of a professional vocalist with 20-30 years of singing experience. So, Diana Ankudinova (10 years old) - Oh, Darling! The famous hit of the legendary group The Beatles.
They had 3 lead singers, really. John Lennon had a great voice, Paul McCartney had perfect pitch and 4.5 octave range, and George Harrison was good enough to have his own No. 1 album after the Beatles broke up. Even Ringo sang a few songs, and had a solo career later.
Ringo will be releasing a new album January 10! He teamed up with T Bone Burnett, Billy Strings, Molly Tuttle, Alison Krauss, Larkin Poe and Lucius to record a Country album. I can't wait to hear it!
Lee, do as many Beatles as you want. We get to relive the moments. I was 9 when this came out and yeah, Beatle Mania took me over until LZ came out a few years later. 😂❤
yeah, waiting for the next Beatles album was amazing. And putting the record on your record player for the first time was so incredible. One brilliant song after the next. And when you finished Side 2, you flipped it over and played both sides again.
My favorite early Beatles album by far is A Hard Day's Night, which is also the only album up to Rubber Soul that is 100% original material. Their first masterpiece, IMHO..
Absolutely// every song please! And yes, every album was eagerly anticipated. Alway waiting for the next and when it came out the reaction was always "whoa"! wtf! Another incredible experience. Never disappointed. It seemed like Paperback Writer marked a new direction when it came out. Rubber Soul was magic to me. Then of course Revolver, followed by Sgt Peppers, then the double White. Always a new experience. For me it all started in late '63 when I read in the Toronto Star newspaper entertainment section a mention about this new band taking Britain by a storm called The Beatles. It put me on notice and I waited for more reports to arrive, which did happen soon. The arrival of She Loves You, I wanna Hold Your Hand, their appearance on Ed Sullivan. And that was it for me. Been in love with everything about them since then. Thanks for giving experience to us of your first exposure, compressed as it was.
With the Beatles took the number one spot in Britain from Please Please Me. please Mr. Postman was the first Motown song played on the BBC and the version played was the one on the Beatles Saturday radio program I believe. You may enjoy The Beatles at the BBC which is the collection of all the tracks they recorded specially for the BBC. It also includes songs not on the albums.
I was 10 when they hit the U.S. Me and three friends lip synced in our class as the Beatles!!!! Badminton rackets with cardboard and rubberbands for guitars, paint cans for drums!!! Every time I hear early Beatles, I'm 10 again!!❤❤❤❤😎😎😎😎
On a side note: Paul McCartney got back to Manchester for his first show in the city in over a decade on Saturday, regaling more than 23,000 fans with a career-spanning set comprising songs from his Beatles, Wings and solo catalogues. But fans be warned: although he is 80% energetic as always, his voice, or what's left of it is not. Check videos online of stops in S. America. Still gets crowds of a couple hundred thousand and everyone love him. The last concert of him I saw was the Freshen Up tour in Texas 2019. He wasn't too bad, but that voice was really frayed at times. Now on some songs it's just an echo of what was. But he still plays great. It might help if he transposed the key down a half octave, but I hear he won't have it.
The Beatles were so fucking great, they put three songs from the rooftop concert on the Let it Be album. 2 of them were only 1 take, and I've got a Feeling was on 2. That is how great they were. And if anyone knows how them Let it Be sessions went, they would see why 3 live songs on 4 total takes on a studio album is.
The sound that conquered the world - John's voice and an incredibly tight, professional band. In some ways this is better than their later work. It hasn't aged a day. It must have been amazing to hear them in Hamburg.
If you have to 😊 I'm waiting for the entire "Beatles for sale "reaction. 'I'm a looser "and "Words of love "from Buddy Holly & the Crickets are favourites
All My Loving was its most popular song. They sang it Lee on the Ed Sullivan show but the Beatles withheld it in the USA. However it got released in Canada and went straight to #1 ! The only wayy they got it in the USA was it making it way.across the border to some shops . Funny ! A copy sung slower was a big hit here down under by Johnny Young ! Great as the song was it really comes alive sung slower. Of those two other songs I think Please Mr Postman is my favourite and Karen Carpenter does a famous version Lee. 🌈🤡
The American albums used this picture on Meet the Beatles. These particular songs were on the American release, "The Beatles Second Album" which was actually their 2nd on the Capitol label with "Introducing the Beatles" on an earlier record on the VJ label.
If you haven't seen the movie Backbeat, I highly recommend it. It's mostly about John and Stu Sutcliffe and their friendship, and the shaping of what became the band that stormed the world with vengeance, known as the Beatles 😊😊
Motown was an absolute gift to the music-loving world and an unbeatable template for would-be pop perfectionists. Chuck Berry's witty, poetic stories and manifestoes like this one were, like Dylan soon after, an example to imitate and model your own work on. Gotta hear 'You've Really Got A Hold On Me', originally by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. 😁👍🏼🎶❤️🍁❤️🎄🥃✨️🕊
Great stuff. You obviously know your Beatles. Just be proud that all that they achieved was through their love of American black music. I was 15 at the time of this LP, …OK album, and was taken with the mania for the next 6, or 7 years.
You've learned a lot about The Beatles. Unlike most people your age, you seem to have an understanding of where the songs come in their career. If you want to really have some fun, watch their movie "A Hard Day's Night." It's a great, great movie.
One night whilst trippin' I pulled out my With The Beatles MFSL Half Speed Master lp 'n played Roll Over Beethoven. I had liked the song before but this experience was a revelation. I played the song 'bout a dozen times. Then I moved on to Lou Reed-Metal Machine Music. A very challengin' listen...but this night it was the perfect choice. Listened to all 4 sides. What a trip!
Yes, buddy, The Beatles are Addicting...But in a good way...Someday you may want to get Sirius XM Radio in your car or home. Channel 18, The Beatles Channel has it all. A few days ago I listened to the first three Beatles fan only Chrisman floppy discs sent to members of their fan club. Unfortunately, I wasn't a member. Most guys didn't join as it was primarily a girl fad at the time. I think they put out seven Christmas records in total. They all appeared on the discs doing comedy and thanking their fans. I believe the last one they didn't record together but each had his own segment.
Chuck Berry used to open shows with “Roll Over Beethoven”, and you’re right: that’s George on lead vocals. When Chuck wrote the song the jukebox cost a dime. Beatles and Stones both covered Chuck Berry. Beatles covered more Motown, especially girl groups, which sounds funny, but they liked the complex harmonies, and Stones more heavy electric blues: Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Willie Dixon…
Should I do a full album reaction to "With the Beatles"?
Yes
Yes, definitely.
I will love anything you put out by The Beatles
Do them all!..Meet The Beatles is etched into my brain & dna as the first Beatles album (being from the U.S.)

Great reaction, as usual! Thanks Lee. :)
"The Beatles Live at the BBC" is a great album when you're ready to check out a bigger catalogue of their cover songs.
"Please Mr. Postman don't be slow be slow be like The Beatles and go man go." Kids used to write this on the envelopes.
No kid I knew, just saying.

O so many great memorys I have whit most of Beatles songs love it.
Listen to the first three songs from this album to experience the growth in songwriting in just seven or eight months
❤💃❤ such fun!!
I met them in the 70s when I was a toddler. I still play some of these songs while driving.
Great Show & Great Song choice🎸🎸🎸
The Beatles were so fucking great, they put three songs from the rooftop concert on the Let it Be album. 2 of them were only 1 take, and I've got a Feeling was on 2. That is how great they were. And if anyone knows how them Let it Be sessions went, they would see why 3 live songs on 4 total takes on a studio album is.
Tunes that The Beatles loved… ❤️Very great!
Please mr postman is soooo beautiful
The sound that conquered the world - John's voice and an incredibly tight, professional band.
In some ways this is better than their later work. It hasn't aged a day.
It must have been amazing to hear them in Hamburg.
Great video, Lee. Thanks. On a side note, just got back from seeing McCartney.
Unbelievable!
There's a nice video of them playing Please Mr. Postman. Fun to watch.
If you have to 😊 I'm waiting for the entire "Beatles for sale "reaction. 'I'm a looser "and "Words of love "from Buddy Holly & the Crickets are favourites
I'm a Loser is one of the earliest expositions of Paul's outstanding bass style. Just phenomenal for the time, and the whole song is great besides.
Good review. This fellow knows his onions for a ‘young ‘un’
ALL MY LOVING was NOT withheld in the USA....it's on the US "MEET THE BEATLES" album
Yes I know that Patti I was of course referring to the single discography ! 😹
The American albums used this picture on Meet the Beatles. These particular songs were on the American release, "The Beatles Second Album" which was actually their 2nd on the Capitol label with "Introducing the Beatles" on an earlier record on the VJ label.
Rubber Soul or Revolver, both great for full album!. Thanks!!
Money, Not A Second Time, Hold Me Tight, It Won't Be Long. All classics from With The Beatles.
Great stuff. You obviously know your Beatles. Just be proud that all that they achieved was through their love of American black music. I was 15 at the time of this LP, …OK album, and was taken with the mania for the next 6, or 7 years.
It’s an amazing album: great gems in there.
I’ve always loved George’s vocal on Roll Over Beethoven.
Many a kid's basement dance party, from 6 to 16, happened to this record.
You've learned a lot about The Beatles. Unlike most people your age, you seem to have an understanding of where the songs come in their career.
If you want to really have some fun, watch their movie "A Hard Day's Night." It's a great, great movie.
Not a second time is haunting.
Why it's so amazing
The Beatles second album ❤
Roll over Beethoven is mostly George in the forefront.
George rocks that Beethoven solo. Awesome version. Postman has always been an early era fave too.
💜💜💜💜
One night whilst trippin' I pulled out my With The Beatles MFSL Half Speed Master lp 'n played Roll Over Beethoven. I had liked the song before but this experience was a revelation. I played the song 'bout a dozen times. Then I moved on to Lou Reed-Metal Machine Music. A very challengin' listen...but this night it was the perfect choice. Listened to all 4 sides. What a trip!
Love Jethro Tull's "Stand Up" behind you
Yes, buddy, The Beatles are Addicting...But in a good way...Someday you may want to get Sirius XM Radio in your car or home.
Two fantastic covers ELO also did a great cover of Roll over Beethoven and I'm pretty sure end their live shows with this.
Yes but also please please me the first album . But you need to hear their version of baby it’s you . Killer !
Yes it’s George I too sometimes wondered who sang.
