    She sounds strong, that interior is great, I bet she rides and drives like a dream. The small chips,wear and dings give it character.

    In 1973 I was 11 years old. I remember these huge cars as being the normal cars that everyone drove. I really liked the 4 door hardtops like this car is. It was so fun to ride in with all the windows down. One of my friends Mom had the 2 door version of this car. Same color inside and out as this car is.

    Such memories. In my first job in 1975 my boss drove this car. He always came in each morning, gave me his car keys and asked me to do him a favor and park his car. So I would go out to the hotel entrance, and drive his car several times around the hotel grounds pretending to find the best parking spot. It was like stearing a floating car, but I loved it. Especially pretending that it was mine. Lol.

    Love these old boats. They have a smooth ride that is unmatched by most anything today. While it’s nice to have a sharp handling car, sometimes it’s nice to have a super smooth cushy ride.

      Congratulations on your birthday and for buying a fantastic Mopar from the fuselage era. You clearly have fine taste in automobiles. I think you'll find that for a vintage car, your '71 will drive and handle like something much more modern. Yea she's big and heavy and the suspension is designed for comfort but she have everyday livability with strong brakes, competent handling and easy steering. Parts are pretty inexpensive too. You made a very good choice in automobiles!

    You guys down south are blessed with a perfect weather. Cars live long, no snow, no salt on the road. Car body last much longer than in Canada. Here cars may last 10 years max, then they rust to irreversible damage. This Chrysler is a pearl. Take good care...

    I love these old school land yachts. I recently owned a 1978 Chrysler New Yorker Brougham which was the former Imperial LeBaron. What a ride that was. Sold it to a guy in Cleveland, Ohio who flew to Birmingham, Al to pick it up and drove it home.

    You brought back memories for me when as a teenager just training to be an auto mechanic the big Chryslers and Dodges (family cars) were the first vehicles I worked on and kept maintenance up on. My mom didn't know a Oldsmobile Cutlass from a Mercury Marquis but the cars she could always spot was a Chrysler. My next door neighbor has a 69 Imperial and there were times he took out the back seat and hauled furniture in it. I miss the smooth ride, the cornering lamps and that big torquey 440. Thanks for sharing.

  • @stardustdreamfactory1947
    @stardustdreamfactory1947 7 років тому +3

    I failed to mention my family never owned one of the fuselage cars but went from a '64 Sedan Deville, to a '67 Newport sedan to a '69 Olds 88 Royale to a '71 Sedan Deville and finishing out with a '79 Sedan Deville - every single one a memorable car. All bought no more than one year old. I've always driven pickup trucks and sports cars since. We had a neighbor who was big on Chrysler products. They owned a magnificent '72 Monaco Brougham with every option including sunroof and cassette player (mounted on the transmission tunnel /microphone). They traded it for an all black '78 New Yorker (last full size) before we moved away. What an american car era!

    • @hullinger
      @hullinger  7 років тому +1

      Having Olds, Cadillac and Chrysler is a pretty diverse group of cars. It seems folks that buy Chrysler products typically stay with the brand so I'm betting your family had a bad experience with the Newport or the Olds was just fresher. Chrysler products of the era had a pretty unique ride and handling combo when compared to the others. It is very distinctive and noticeable and is a result of the torsion bar front suspension while the others had coil springs. Chryslers started using torsion bars in 1957 and even won the Motor Trend Car of the Year that year for this. Thanks for checking out my video and if you haven't already, take a look at the Corvair Greenbrier, Desoto and some of the other videos I made. Hopefully they're not so cringe-worthy.

      Funny about the Chrysler loyalty...we had neighbours in Edmonton who had a 19621 Chrysler 300 (non letter), a 1964 300(non letter), a 1965 New Yorker and a 1968 300 while we lived there 1962-68. I dropped in on them to say hello 20 years later and she had a late model Olds Toronado which did not surprise me as her car in the day was a 1966 Malibu SS, but he was still driving a Dodge Dakota truck in his retirement.

    • @hullinger
      @hullinger  7 років тому +1

      Hey, I don't disagree about build quality. Pretty disappointing as the rest of the industry was making low quality stuff too. A buyer would have to really step up in price in order to get a well build and engineered car. The Japanese stuff during that time wasn't competitive and the European stuff was crazy expensive.

    • @stardustdreamfactory1947

      Dad had a knack for finding 'like new' cars for a song - always finding the 'deal'. None were bought new and I don't remember any as being particularly troublesome. I recall the Newport needing an a/c repair and power window repair when dad first brought it home. The 'Chrysler' neighbors I mentioned elsewhere really had it in their blood and they had a number of relatives who even worked at local Chrysler - Dodge - Plymouth dealerships. I remember them bringing a like new '48 Chrysler (w/fluid drive) home from a elderly relative who had recently passed away. I recall the radio backlight changing colors - pretty cool (late '60s). We had many neighbors who owned C-P-D products; don't recall any complaining about the build quality.

    That vinyl top issue isn't about "shrinking" There is rust around the glass and on the roof. Rust repair, R&I the back glass, replace the vinyl and replacement of rear window motors and possibly regulators. That's a good $2000 depending on the shop.

    • @user-ut9ln4vd5m
      @user-ut9ln4vd5m 5 років тому

      How much to just rip off the vinyl & paint the metal? A $2 paint scraper & $10 rattle cans do it, or is there something messed up about the underlying metal?

    • @d.e.b.b5788
      @d.e.b.b5788 5 років тому +2

      @@user-ut9ln4vd5m Old cars with vinyl roofs routinely have lots of rust underneath, and based on what I can see this one will be no exception; you see bits of rust in varied places on the car. So that needs to be addressed first, especially where the trim is located, as the holes where those trim pieces usually have enlarged from expanding rust. Plus, you have to match the paint, and you're going to have a hard time doing that with rattle cans. Best option is usually to cut out the badly rusted parts, weld in replacements, and replace the vinyl roof, because trying to get the metal right after fixing the rust will be near impossible without costing a fortune in order to keep the panels looking perfect.

    Beautiful car! It's crying out for a full restoration (when you get the time and money). I love how the indicators are visible from the driver's seat (small lights flashing atop the front of the fenders) and the look of the grille. I was a 12 year old when this car was new. Only a few made their way downunder (Chrysler were building a slightly smaller luxury car for our market...the "Chrysler by Chrysler"...yep, that was the name of it!) but I drooled over every one I saw. If I owned one like this I'd fully restore it, change the lights to LED, retrofit the modern Chrysler fuel injected V8 from the 300, install an ABS booster system and install a modern airbag steering wheel. The rest I'd leave as is...just fully restored. What a dream! One day, if I win the lottery......

    I just love those big 70's cars! The size and styling is what made them distinctly AMERICAN. The European and Japanese car makes during those times pale in comparison to our styling. I used to own a 79 Mercury Cougar and what a beauty she was. You sir, have one fine gem of a car!

      Hey, thanks for checking out my video and your comment. I appreciate what you said and distinctly remember the Datsun 210 and 610 from the early 1970's. They were almost comical in comparison to what the big American cars were and could do. Of course, the gas crisis hit and the last laugh was on the gas guzzlers. Thanks again for sharing.

    Not only does this car have the expensive leather interior option but it has the extremely rare separate rear air conditioning option. If you watch the video where it shows you the shot of the dash, you can see the rear air conditioning switch. Beautiful car but needs some cosmetic restoration.

    Gave you the Thumbs-Up... and you make me long for my youth!!
    I grew up in Lincolns & Cads, and as much as I LOVED our Continental Town Car, I've learned that I wish Dad had an Imperial for more than (yes) FOUR days....
    I'm not sure this car is bigger than a Town Car, though it certainly looks like that trunk & overhang beat the Cadillacs on space. I DO prefer the "deep-well" trunks on the Lincoln/Mercurys though.
    I admire Chrysler for KEEPING the wing-windows (in power, of course), and that Torsion-Bar front suspension was always superior to the other two! Plus, they had THREE-speed wipers while everyone else had only 2-speed... Also, while most of the features/options were common among all three automakers, only Chrysler gave you full gauges AND an idiot-light to say, "Hey, look at the gauges, Idiot!" LOL
    Imperial even had an option for "Fuel Economy" in the Left-Front fender turn-signal, and low-beam WIPERS in the 70's, though finding one is like finding a unicorn - I think their biggest problem was rust... like under your vinyl roof.
    All things said, thank you for your video!

    • @hullinger
      @hullinger  7 років тому +1

      Thanks for checking out my video and for your comment. I never knew Chrysler had a mileage minder in the fender. That's a pretty cool feature and I'm guessing appropriate too given the '70's gas crisis. Thanks again for sharing.

    • @imperiallebaron4476

      Yea, it was called the "Fuel Pacer System". The idea behind it was to indicdate if you were giving the engine more fuel for the speed you were going. The turn signal indicator light on the left fender would come on to let you know. My neighbor had a 1975 Dodge Dart with it.

    This is definitely a car worth a few dollars in upgrade. Paint, roof, some interior work, check the suspension, give it a good going over. Truly a survivor from the land yacht era.

    • @hullinger
      @hullinger  7 років тому +3

      Thanks for checking out my video and your comment. Yea, these cars are certainly worthy of restoring simply for their out-of-the-norm shear size. Unfortunately they just don't hold much value and it's real easy to get upside down financially. As an example, I bought this car for $3K, had it shipped from Alabama to Delaware, spent another $500 on parts. When I was done I had $4300 in the car but only got $3500 when I sold it one year later. It's a real shame these cars just don't command higher prices and thus warrant more restoration work. I believe the same holds true for Cadillac and Lincolns of the same era too.

    I remember seeing a lot of imperials in junk yards, not because they were bad cars but because the middle piece that supports the back doors would rust off and break. The only old big sedan I owned was a 67' Pontiac Catalina. It was definetly a big car. When you opened the hood it made the Pontiac 400 Big Block look tiny but it had plenty of power. As for large 70's vehicles I owned a 76' Mercury Cougar, although it was a large car, the inside was tiny.

  • @d.e.b.b5788

    Most of the issues can be addressed. Body roll can be controlled if you can find the Addco sway bars which were often used on Plymouth Fury III's. Vinyl top should be replaced or removed, as they often have rust underneath. I would get it replaced. Exhaust is noisy, it should be almost silent. But whatever floats your boat, or in this case, land yacht! Nice car. Oh, rear door window modulators are pretty easy to work on, I replaced the ones in my dad's 1970 Fury III. Usually only need to replace the plastic strip that works them.

    So beautyful, especially the 4 Door Hardtop Bodystyle without the B.Pillars, i love it....& The American V8, nice greetings from Bavaria! ;)
    Ißm still restoring an 67 Chevy Caprice/Impala 4 Door Hardtop, a full restoration of an Ohio car, with rebuilding sheet metal shaped by hand to get new wheel arches at the f.fenders an Quarters, + the whole lower windshield frame and sections of the trinklid weatherstrip channel.....and some more spots....I learned to rebuild/Shape new sheet metal by my hands/myself, with this project and ai´m proud of that craftmanship/to can do that now. I wish more people would do that to safe more cars instead parting "Partscars" out.... Because there will come more, new, young generations who like to get affordabe project cars from places like "Jnk Yards" or something else to restore. And i can tell you how bad it is when the generations before you was doing with classic cars had crushed them and closed the "junk yards"...Because at germany it is done so...And so i can´t tell you how much i would live at usa, especially with all the american classics what you could still find tehre at places like these "Junk Yards"...That´s an big dream in my eyes. I´m 35 years old now and the american classic cars of the era between 1950-1970s are my favorite cars. I´m also working on present muscles, true american style cars like the Dodge Charger R/T or something else like that....What are new true american style cars in my eyes, like it should be. :) I wish Chrysler, GM and Ford would build Mid- and Fullsize 2 & 4 Doors with V8 again, also with body on frame design and even with V8 engine....And the Charger, Chrysler 300C are very good examples for that right way in my eyes. But i they would add the "4 Door Hardtop" Bodystyle withouth the B-Pillars, for example to a Charger/300C that was FANTASTIC! ;) And in my eyes it´s not only a styling part, it´s also s nice and good for a better sight at crossroads what could make that possible to see crossing cars earlyer and better....It´s a big part for sefety!

    I had a '72 Chrysler Newport Royal. "Mabel" was the same color as this car, except she had a white vinyl roof. This Imperial is a hardtop. "Mabel" was a 4-door sedan. Sedans are better built and safer. If you roll a sedan, you at least have a roof pillar in the middle to help keep the roof from collapsing and crushing the occupants.

    I tried to buy this car a short time after this video came out-but I missed it. I talked with Chris on the phone actually. I had a '72-bone stock with the quiet muffler and resonator on it and it still had a burble. It's a 440. Inside was very quiet when driving. As far as the front-it's sinister looking. This car looks it wants to run you over. The tear drop tail lights are also awesome. When you think about "Christine"-they could have also easily used one of these.

She really was a very nice driving and riding car and you're right about the 440 V8 having a nice sound. I had replaced the stock muffler on the car with the longest glasspak muffler I could fit and I think it gave the car a nice deep and throaty sound without being too loud inside. I liked it, at least. And you're right about the cool styling of the car. I love these fuselage cars, the hidden headlights, tear drop lights, grill and size. I'd like to get another at some point since there's just so much to love about the Imperial! -Chris

    This was the last year of the true Imperials. After 73, the Imperial was little more than a glorified Chrysler, ending up with same body as a big Chrysler. Though this "true" Imperial is almost identical to the 1972 model, I prefer the 72 because I like the grill better. As to size, the Imperial, Caddy Brougham and Lincoln Sedan were almost identical in specs. The Caddy Brougham had a longer wheelbase (and rear legroom) but the Imperial did have alonger body. The Caddy was a tad bit wider. All three cars topped 5000 pounds, though the Lincoln barely tops the scale on weight over the Imperial, but those numbers can vary. One production Cadillac that is often forgotten is the Fleetwood 75 Series. These were really the biggest production (non-custom) cars made in the US with over 2000 built by GM in 1973. As a reference, GM sold almost as many 75-types in 1973 as Chrysler sold Imperial coups.

    • @hullinger

      Wow, great information and I appreciate your commenting and sharing! And yeah, it's amazing how many Cadillac's, or maybe it's how few Imperial's were sold when compared to each other. The Cadillac really owned the luxury car market at that time. I had once owned a '74 Calais and they really did have the best ride in the world. Now, if you're looking for competent handling in a luxury car, than Imperial was your only choice. Thanks again! -Chris
