  • I'm curious if others think this is worth repairing. I priced out the replacement caps at $20CAD (incl. shipping). This VCR did function well in the past, so I'm tempted to give it another chance.
I have seen another rebranded Samsung from this era with a failed power supply due to caps. It was a low end Toshiba that I ended up junking.

I have the same model bought new in 2004, still works great, recently opened it up to clean the head since the little orange foam roller disintegrated and spread and orange paste all over the head. My power supply makes the same noise but everything is fine. I dont have these tracking issues. Hope you get it figured out though

There's a part 2 where I figured out it was an alignment issue.

Interesting, My SLV-N500 suffered the same fate. The roller wheel behind the video drum turned to goo and made a mess. I cleaned up the mess, but the deck will not play tapes anymore. I'm now trying to find that wheel part.

If you feel it can be repaired for "sentimental" reasons I say do it then. You mentioned you had it for so many years without fail (until recently), so I would have it repaired. Hope you're able to do that though considering VCR repair (brick & mortar) shops are now hard to find, at least where I'm at in Visalia, Ca. here (near Fresno). I took mine to an "electronic repair" shop, and the owner laughed at me and said it's not worth fixing due to lack of online VCR parts (he couldn't order himself) are hard to find now, and to try to find another used VCR at a yard sale or thrift store. He wasn't much help at all! Won't be going there anymore!
I'm considering buying your model "new" from eBay and would like to know your opinion if it's worth buying. I punched in your model number of your VCR and this video came up, so had to watch. My only gripe is that this item has no refund once purchased. My old VCR (Magnavox) finally just took a crap after so many years of great service, but unable to find anymore, and not sure what's wrong with it since I'm no expert. I'm suspecting my drive belt motor is defective because I have to force it to spin with my finger to play or the power shuts down automatically or sometimes ejects, that goes for all videocassettes. Even with a brand new drive belt I was able to find online miraculously, still didn't work. Even after a detailed lubing and cleaning. I wish someone out there would sell VCR's again at stores, they would make a killing selling them to old farts like us, lol. I'm a pack-rat and still have my 500+ VCR tapes I STILL need to transfer to DVD.
I wish you the best of luck in your decision my friend. Stay safe and God bless.

I would not bother fixing unless it doesn't let you do mono audio. Might not sound as good but it will work. I had a junk funia VCR that same problem and after a while the Hi-Fi audio broke. The VCR is was used for years in mono mode. I just keep it as a spare VCR.

I uploaded a part 2. Luckily it was a simple fix for this problem.

Great video, can you please tell me what the yellow roller next to the head spool is for? (partially obscured by the electrical loom) I have a similar one thats not working, and it looks like the yellow roller has decomposed, any idea how to source another piece of foam or what it is called? Many thanks

I didn't mention in this video, but that's the "automatic head cleaner". When the guides load the tape they momentarily push it against the head while the head is spinning. It's good practice to remove these as the foam can degrade when it ages. Remove the whole assembly, not just the foam.

@@probnotstech I see, many thanks, mine doesnt seem to rotate when the tape is playing. but thanks to your explanation it is not supposed to. Are they easy to source?Best wishes.

@@charliebrown6850 I've never tried to source one, but I imagine they'd be near impossible to source nowadays. If you found one, the material would be just as old and suspect as the one you have now. It's just remove the whole thing. It's not integral to the operation of the VCR.

@@probnotstech will do, many thanks, i will remove the foam, as it wont clean the head in the state it has decomposed, best wishes

Where is the MODE SWITCH on a sony vcr? Mine likely needs cleaning. I appreciate any help you can give. thank you

Depends on the model. If it's similar to this one (which is made by Samsung) then I believe it's attached to the circuit board along the bottom. The VCR chassis can be lifted off the board to access it.

We had some piece of crap Samsung vcr that had the same mechnism as the one in the video in our cottage it started eating tapes, I remeber trying to clean the mode switch but it turned out that it had a optical mode switch, optical mode switches can't be cleaned they have to be replaced if they got bad, recommend you to just look for another vcr
