Man, after watching thousands of tutorials to learn more about WP , your videos are the best! You explain in such an easy way to understand! You are great!
Thank you THANK YOU so much. 😭😭 I set up my entire website and was making changes to the code and learned that I needed a child theme to prevent my changes from getting deleted during updates. I was so overwhelmed I didn't know where to start. God bless you man 🙏🏽
I used to always use a child theme (in fact, I even bought the Pro version of Child Theme Configurator), but not really anymore... Nowadays, I use a good theme (like Astra or OceanWP) that allows me to do my customizations in the Customizer. If I need to add code to functions.php, I simply use a plugin (wordpress.org/plugins/code-snippets/) and to be able to "modify" the structure of a page (besides using a page builder like Elementor), the I use Toolset (allows me to create custom types and queries with Views)... So, I would only need Child Theme Configurator if I need to make changes directly to a php file (which, like I said, with the above mentioned tools, hasn't happen for quite a while)...
@@brianlee415 you mean about using Toolset to create a page or an element's layout? I unfortunately don't have the time right now... maybe in a month... Meanwhile, you can always look at Toolset (more particularly Views) tutorials...
@@acehobojoe I have the Pro version of Child Theme Configurator, though I don't use it too often anymore... I have the full lifetime Toolset account and I have the Pro version of Elementor (among other things ;) ).
Dude this was so helpful. I was looking for a way to preserve my edits in the functions.php file after an update and I also wanted to make it very clear for dummies what type of code does what exactly without using the comment brackets above, inside or below the actually code. I'm gonna install that plugin right away! Thanks a lot man
Wow, this is amazing!! Really, really helpful. I tried to find how to build a child theme previously, but it was way too complicated. This is soooo easy. Thank you, subbed.
Thank you so much for bringing to light the Child Theme Configurator plugin. This was exactly the way to go instead of following line by line from the WP documentation.
is it safe to migrate to child theme when you have already built all the website on the parent theme? won't I lose all my configurations? thanks for the vid!
On my side it shows: This theme doesn't need a parent theme style.css file for its appearance. The configurator has selected "Do not add parent template handling" for the "Parent template handling" option (see step 6, below). And in step 6 there is the third one clicked automatically. Can you explain what this means and if I still can change the css?
after analyzing your theme, the 5th setting "sleect where to save new styles" is confusing me. does it mean a seperate style sheet from the theme you analyzed? If so, wouldn't i want a separate stylesheet to avoid issues when updating like you stated at the start?
Hi! Love your cat profile pic. I think the "separate style sheet" option is pretty advanced. Like if you wanted to have 2+ child themes and start the second one with a duplicate of the first. Just pick the first option and run!
Question.. I purchased a theme which also came with a child theme. I didn't upload the child theme but instead just the main theme. I didn't change any code on my own but I did design the site. Now the site has an needed up. If I install the child theme, how does the child them received thr needed update also?
Hello Ferdy, I have one querry. I have installed the "Child Theme" in my website. from now on whatever changes I will be making using DIVI Visual Builder do I need to do that keeping "DIVI THEME" activated or "DIVI CHILD THEME" activated? Please let me know thank you.
I really like the chid theme ferdy and the strategy you use to teach in all your videos. You are such a great teacher..! Do you have any video in your youtube channel about ( How to make Login and Registration form in your website) . I mean a login and regisration form that will make you access contentent on services and blog page only. If you do not login& Register you will only have access to other pages on your website but restricted on servicess & blog page. If you don't any video about Login & Registration form, can you please make one using any of your theme...
Are child themes necessary for the Hello theme for Elementor? Can we just rely on adding custom CSS coding within appearance --> customize and advanced CSS section within the page builder?
Ferdy! Can you tell me why I don't see the editor in the left menu? Unfortunately this is of no use to me if I don't have the editor in the left menu. Hopefully you can respond to this! Thanks!
Hi!I have one question..i'm a begginer in web dev.. i started to work on a wordpress site..the problem is that i havent worked on a child theme..i've worked directly on the parent theme (i didnt know to much about child themes..)...this theme now has a problem that must be solved by the theme's developer.. Question: If i create a child theme, this child theme will inherit the error from its parent..if that error is solved in the parent theme is solved by the theme's developer, will the error also dissapear from the child theme? what should i do in this case? create the child theme and work on it? Or do i have to wait for the error problem to be solved in the parent theme so that i can create a child theme? Tnx..
I am having some problems here. The child theme supposedly works, but as soon as I open some of the posts on my website they are messed up. The Navigation bar, Sidebars, everything is kinda messed up when opening a single post. When I open the home part of the website it's still intact. I have removed the child theme and installed a fresh one again just to check, and I have those problems from the start. I am using the NewsCard theme as my parent theme and when I use the full version, not the child, everything is fine.
GREAT TUTORIAL! Your wordpress is so fast! But mine is a bit slow. On what does the wordpress speed depend on? server speed? I use a very fast internet connection.
so,if we don't know coding and we are doing customization from some page builder or from theme customizer itsself we don't need a child theme? is it right?
Hello , can you let me know if there is a link back to the cpanel? I will have to do this myself as the guy who “designed” the site was fired . Anything I need to know re xref back to the original hosting ? Thank you
As i saw on this video, there is only 2 files in child theme. For editing in theme, can we need to add files in child theme like header.php, footer.php, content.php etc. Before deleting the plugin, is it necessary to add all files in child theme.
How do I retain layout/design once I import demo content? I’ve tried export/import aspects from child theme, I’m doing something wrong. I just want the demo pages/content, want to retain header/footer/menu. Thanks
What do you do when your child theme doesn't exactly look like the parent theme? For example, my font isn't the same on my child theme as my parent theme.
Hi, I made my wordpress in 2019, but it's suggesting me to create a child theme for updating existing theme, is it necessary to create one since I have no programming knowledge?
Hi Ferdy, Can we make child theme and copy all files from main theme. And then delete the main theme. Then do we are the owner of this child theme? Will there be any copyright issue if we name this child theme with our own and this will be no more child theme? This is the question regarding if we want to make our own theme in the way I explained and you did in the video. Waiting for your kind response. Thanks
You would press F12 to see exactly what part of the main theme you don't want. Then in the style.css file, use the same CSS term, like "p" for paragraph or whatever, and say "display:none" to not use that part of the parent theme anymore. It will accomplish the same thing.
@@TTunah well, the problem it is that I wanted to bypass a sticky javascript file, which I find it outdated and I couldn't debuged myself, and I couldn't find all the places it is used. The soluton it was to just hide it, where it is registered, but in the process it may create a redux class issue. :/

It's acting strange for me... I created a child theme but all the customisation changes I made to the original theme are gone somehow, and it goes back to the default sample content. Maybe something weird with the Twenty Twenty Four theme. UPDATE: It seems to be due to Twenty Twenty-Four being a "block theme". I'm not really sure what the difference is, but anyway, I was able to use another plugin called "Create Block Theme" to export the (accidentally) altered theme and create a child theme with my changes. A bit weird, but anyway. I wish there was an easy way to work on a theme while the site is live without activating it, or to operate on a staging version of the site easily and then swap the changes in.
Hi Ferdy, I tried this with the shop-isle theme from theme-isle but unfortunately, I had an error saying "A closing PHP tag was detected in Child theme functions file so "Parent Stylesheet Handling" option was not configured.
