well i'm german and i think it's even harder for me. they all sounded the same to me. even though i can differentiate between some english dialects like northern, scottish, irish etc. but Baelish just always sounds like Baelish to me.
I think Aidan Gillen was one of those "what is this fantasy shit" actors who didn't take the project too seriously. The opposite of investing yourself intensely in a bad movie.
It's interesting. I would think he would have some sort of footing as to why he is switching his accent. Or that he is so involved in the character that it simply comes out naturally. I know for a fact that many different accents come out spontaneously within my own self due to the influences of many different cultures plus the fact of how influenced I sometimes can be. And that many times I don't even realize it until someone says something. It's a part of me. Not many people have this, and so I can see how it can come across as inauthentic within Littlefinger but that maybe it is due to highly magician-like qualities.
It's astounding to me that you didn't pick up on the fact that he's in different places talking to very different people publicly, privately, and he's Littlefinger: the master manipulator aka the Mockingbird. Seriously nothing on that? The entire character is that he tells everyone what they want to hear, you don't think there's any chance he'd adapt his way of speaking and accent to elicit different reactions from others? Or even subconsciously, or a way for Aiden Gillen to make him sound mysterious and not belonging to one place (a character who was born poor in the Fingers, with partial Braavosi heritage, raised in the Riverlands court with the Tully nobles, then worked his way up King's Landing's hierarchy for decades and then returned north). You point out an obvious change from the earlier English once he gets to the Vale. I was sure you'd figured it out when you said he cycled through all his accents like the terminator's faces when he's desperate going to different people trying everything to save himself. I know it changes with Sansa too and that could be insightful as he reveals the other side of himself and manipulates her etc etc but at least a mention of the possibility... Instead you lazily just state it's inconsistent and give it a 1 out of whatever. Dissapointing vid
Haha originally I thought he was British, even when he played Americans. Then, when his accent slipped all over the show, I thought maybe he really was American cause he couldn't hold it together. But that clip at the end of his completely natural, perfectly good voice is like...idk what were they thinking? Couldn't he have just done his own voice and maybe dropped it an octave or something?
