- BIKING IN OTTAWA ALONG THE RIDEAU CANAL, I SAW THE LOCKS IN ACTION!
The RIDEAU CANAL is a UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE because it is the oldest continuously operated canal in North America, with 24 hand-operated lock stations. This 200-year-old historic treasure is operated by Parks Canada. THIS VIDEO SHOWS how Parks Canada staff turn the hand-operated cranks. These cranks are connected to old pulley-systems that open and close the wooden gates that control the flow of water! It is a definite MUST-SEE!
Ottawa is a bike-friendly city, with amazing pathways. I rented an E-bike to ride along the Rideau Canal, then crossed the Ottawa river over a bridge to the Quebec side, which gave magnificent views of the Parliament Buildings.
Consisting of a series of beautiful lakes and rivers connected by canals, the Rideau Canal stretches 202 km from Kingston to Ottawa, Canada’s capital. It is a recreational paradise for boating and paddling. Waterway Cruise companies operate sight-seeing cruise ships, complete with rooms, dining, and guided tours.
