In September 1939, immediately following the German invasion of Poland, Nazi Germany established it's first concentration camp outside of German borders. Stutthof was intentionally built in the middle of nowhere. Located in the middle of a swamp, the Germans used the geography to hide the camp from prying eyes.
At first designed to house the most important members of Polish society, including political and cultural leaders, as well as famous artists and prestigious intellectuals. Stutthof would become a house of horror as the second world war progressed.
