  • Restored TV footage from the July 14, 1969 press conference by the Apollo 11 crew. Two days before launch, the crew was interviewed by Walter Cronkite (CBS), Al Rossiter, Jr. (UPI), Evert Clark (Newsweek) and Joel Shurkin (Reuters).
The video was remasted to improve color balance and stability. AI upscale (Topaz AI) was used to resample the video to full HD resolution. While it works in most cases, some artifacts are present in some sequences.

Apollo 11 (July 16-24, 1969) was the American spaceflight that first landed humans on the Moon. Commander Neil Armstrong and Lunar Module Pilot Buzz Aldrin landed the Apollo Lunar Module Eagle on July 20, 1969, at 20:17 UTC, and Armstrong became the first person to step onto the Moon's surface six hours and 39 minutes later, on July 21 at 02:56 UTC. Aldrin joined him 19 minutes later, and they spent about two and a quarter hours together exploring the site they had named Tranquility Base upon landing. Armstrong and Aldrin collected 47.5 pounds (21.5 kg) of lunar material to bring back to Earth as pilot Michael Collins flew the Command Module Columbia in lunar orbit, and were on the Moon's surface for 21 hours, 36 minutes before lifting off to rejoin Columbia.

Great press conference. Mike was always the joker but he was a brilliant pilot and astronaut. I was 4 years old when they landed on the moon. My dad woke me up in the wee hours here in Scotland and it’s stayed with me my whole life. Hopefully we’ll see a return to the moon soon but these guy’s were the pioneers and will never be forgotten. Thanks for posting. Really appreciate it. All the best from Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇺🇸

Man, you can tell that these guys are test pilots, astronauts, folks who know their job, and do it well -- not movie stars. Interviews like this remind you that they know every word they say will be scrutinized and reflect upon not only them, but the program, NASA, and every single person who's worked to get them this far. The eyes of the world were upon them on the precipice of a momentous achievement in human history, and you know what? They did pretty good under all that pressure.

Hell yeah they did pretty good. None of these guys were selected for public speaking, can you imagine having to conduct this interview as a commercial pilot or Top Gun nominee.
I always think how nervous I’d be if it were I that Nixon calls out of blue on lunar surface and you know that 300years from then, humans will be rewatching that recording. And not a single verbal stumble thru most entire mission.

Thanks for finding, tidying up and uploading this. Buzz’s responses were the kind I was thinking myself as the questions were being asked - especially about future missions. Mike was just being Mike and blew off the “forgotten man” comment, which was class. Interesting to see Jules Bergman wasn’t one of those asking questions here. He always seemed to me to be the negative one of the TV press. “Springs” on the LEM would have been funny - which is likely why Buzz laughed.

Thank you very much Retro Space HD for sharing that interview, perhaps one of the best interviews of our beloved crew. I love this material, thank you very much. T-30 days and counting until the 55th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. This is PURE GOLD 😱

I can't get enough of this kind of thing. I often daydream and wonder if I had met Neil or Buzz, what I would ask them. I would try to ask less technical, but more emotional and introspective questions, especially immediate and initial reactions to specific events of the mission, and conversations each of them had that we have not had privy to.

Based on the books I have read and many other videos like this, Mike was the glib one of the the three. You can tell by Neil's and Buzz's responses the precision they are articulating, and the matter of factness and confidence in NASA, the technology and themselves. They are true heroes with nerves of steel. Every man that sat atop any of the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo rockets were literally living on the edge until they splashed down.

Mike had the sense of humor of the three, for sure.

You need a combination. It was actually a perfect combination. I don’t think you’d wanna go one with two the other way around, I know you probably wouldn’t wanna go with three either way, so I think it was perfect.

@@Ryan-mq2miIt is interesting (divine?) that mostly pure luck had these 3 in Deke’s rotation for this particular flight….esp after the several deaths and astro illnesses that came in the 24 months prior that caused the shuffling.
Had Apollo 1 not caught fire, who knows if America lands there by 1969 and if Gus really would have been the one first. Or if precursor flight success would have shuffled on him.

I agree. Sometimes people get too wrapped up in the loss of life in the endeavor to walk on the moon. Throughout history, there are always lives sacrificed to enable mankind to achieve and progress. The Apollo 1's crew unfortunate event was not in vain by any stretch of the imagination. Every astronaut that has flown and will fly knows the risks going in, and will accept their fate without trepidation. This also goes along with anyone in law enforcement, fire, etc. As a species, we are fortunate and blessed that we have such brave humans.
The fire, although very sad and unfortunate, actually enabled the success of the program.
With no slight to ANY of the Apollo crews, Neil was probably the best one for the first landing attempt. He was the epitome of cool as a cucumber with nerves if steel. He could have been killed twice with the Agena/Geminii spin out and the LLRV ejection. The landing was probably less risky than what he'd already lived through.

Would have been great to get Deke and Kraft’s thoughts on if there could have been more purposely selection had another crew rotation come due…..Pete Conrad 1st Man….? Hmmm

Awesome. That’s the most I’ve ever heard from Neil. I get it though. I totally get it, especially just seeing the interaction and fall out of spending any time with the large big corporate fake media.

Tells you about their media training that Neil deferred the last (personal) question to Mike, and then he nor Buzz offered a response. Reporter should have followed up and asked Neil, for history’s sake it kinda deserved a response.
