  • @livingoutsidethebubble

    Corn does prefer more humus than I can see in your soil, also the reason squash is grown with it is to deter pests as the rodents etc do not like the prickly leaves.

    So 32 corn plants given how many piece of corn fruit?

    • @PepplesPotager
      @PepplesPotager  4 роки тому +3

      The Silver Queen variety often produces 2 ears per stalk for me when growing conditions are good. Not every stalk will produce 2 but I usually get between 50-64 ears. That amount is lower when you count how many the squirrels eat lol.

    Thank you for posting this. It was informative, as were the replies below. I also live in Maryland (Annapolis area) and am looking at planting corn this year for the first time since my teenage years when my parents had a huge garden. My biggest fear is the squirrels. There are lots of them, and they are always very determined. I'm in a neighborhood, so "getting rid of them" isn't a viable option. the idea of planting cucumbers in with them was a great tip. Thank you for that.

      Some varieties of corn are short season so that could be the cause. If it's not a short season variety then it could be they were exposed to cold temperatures too early. Great video sorry about the storm damage but you did a great job. My question is I live in zone 10, and don't have a green house when will it be okay to start corn seed in pots outside then transfer to the garden area?

    • @PepplesPotager
      @PepplesPotager  3 роки тому +1

      I only use seedtrays or pots in my greenhouse because of squirrels eating the corn after I direct sow them in my beds. If you don't have that problem I would reccomend direct sow seeds where you plan on growing corn. If you have to start them outside its best to start them when overnight temps are consistently above 50°. In zone 10 that probably comes very early in the growing season. Thanks for watching!

    • @PepplesPotager
      @PepplesPotager  4 роки тому +2

      I usually water them really good at least twice a week. Sometimes more when temperatures get up into 90's. Our average temp here Maryland zone 6 during the summer is 85. I imagine it's much warmer in zone 8. So you may have to water more often. But sometimes nature takes care of it for you. 1-2 inches of water a week is about what most gardens need.

      Natural. As long as you plant in blocks they should be fine. I would say no less than 15 plants for natural pollination. But I've never planted less than 32 plants so not really sure. But I do go around shaking the stalks to make the pollen disperse. Thanks for watching!

      The best way is to plant companion plants that attract bugs that feed in the bugs you are having issues with. Marigolds, hyssop are a must in my opinion. Also try not planting your garden in designated sections, but intercropping all of your crops together. It will greatly help I promise.

    i just harvested half my cobs yesterday.
    i dont know what's the name of the variety of corn i planted. but it's the same one my grandfather used to plant. it's not a sweetcorn, and it's slightly starchier, but i like the taste and texture better than sweercorn, the kernels also tend to be slightly bigger than sweetcorn, but still not big, probably medium.
    i learned a few lessons.
    my soil needs a bit more fertilizer. some of the cobs were a bit small....
    and i need to start hand-pollinating, because there were a lot of kernels that never formed. only two cobs were "perfect".
    still it was a good harvest of tasty corn that smells delicious even raw.
    only lost one cob to some pests that i honestly cant identify. i think i cob is reasonable......once those plants die i will plant a larger amount....it's SUPER EASY to grow.....all you need to do is look at it regularly, and if it doesnt rain water it......

      i get very strong sunlight all year :D
      i actually dug 4 small trenches, and filled them with a mix of soil and compost and planted there.
      they are arranged like this:

      the vertical space is for me to be able to walk. it proved itself quite useful. i transplanted planted 24 seedlings(cant direct plant because the wildlife(i suspect rats, or an invasive lizard species) eats the seeds i plant) 2 of them were quite weak and died very young. one got stunted for some reason, and 2 of them just fell after reaching full size.....all others gave me 2 cobs, some are still not ripe. for next time i will make the trenches longer, and deeper. i noticed corn grows 2 sets of roots, so i will just cover them normally on transplant and then add more soil once they develop the second set of roots.
      i grow my tomatoes, okra and peppers on slightly raised beds, built out of cinder blocks.
      the previous owner of this house planted a lot of trash(literally trash) all over the place, so whenever i dig up a new section it takes me like 3-5 times longer than it should, because i need to pick up all the trash and dispose of it. but i;ve cleared a pretty decent portion of the lot.
