I actually lived in "Upper East Tennessee" for a few years. The people up there sometimes talk about "The Lost State of Franklin," and a fair number of local businesses and things involve the name in some form. "Bank of Franklin," "Franklin used car sales," things like that. Your map was slightly incorrect. You got the Tennessee portion right, but there was also some territory in what is now present-day North Carolina. I used to have a map of their exact territory, but I've long-since lost it. Also, it was briefly called "Frankland" for a few months, until they decided that sounded stupid. They applied for statehood, as you said, but Congress refused to discuss the issue because of some other problems that were going on at the time. After a few years of this, Franklin declared itself an independent republic and tried to gain recognition from some European countries. This annoyed Congress enough that they formed the modern state of Tennessee to resolve the crisis.
Just a few years ago, there was a proposed ballot initiative in California to split the state into 6 separate states. Almost all of my ancestors of military age during the Civil War fought in the Union Army, although they resided in north Alabama. I didn't know this as a child and like most Southerners, I thought Robert Lee was a hero and William Sherman was evil. Then my parents broke the news to me in high school: many in my family were calvarymen that served directly for General Sherman in the march through Georgia and the Carolinas. They were actually rumored to have took a special interest in helping make Georgia howl. Their families in north Alabama were being starved, robbed, and tortured by Stoke Roberts' violent Home Guard: men that weren't fit to be actual soldiers, but delighted in harassing and attacking the families of Unionists. After hearing the stories of what these families suffered at the hands of Confederates and their sympathizers, I am glad that they brought misery to the planter society in Georgia and South Carolina. I'm from South Florida, and I know every couple of years this issue comes up. And personally, I would love nothing more than to separate South Florida from North Florida. Culturally and politically we're very different with different interests. Back in 2014 the proposal came up, but was obviously shot down. I'd like to hear the history of this movement though.
Republicans will never let PR become a state until PR can prove that it can manage its financial affairs. Which looks highly unlikely as PR's ideas about a balanced budget is about the same as California. (What is a budget?) It is a legitimate reason for not letting a Dem leaning state into the Union. Also, the government is as corrupt as hell.
"nobody knows all 50 States". .. except most people who had to learn them in Elementary School 💁🏽♂️ .. maybe "a lot of people don't know all 50 States", but not "nobody".. it's not that hard to name them all, and the names aren't super obscure, either
The big problem with new states is the political aspect. New states will usually lean left or right, and that would piss off at least one party. States like franklin and Lincoln would be pretty conservative, but others like Jefferson would be pretty left wing. We'd probably need to add two states at a time to keep the balance, like with new states in the old days
Hey man, I love your videos, and seeing your notification makes me truly excited to learn. As a local from the Nickajack region (ignore the profile picture, I know, I just like flags), we pronounce it "NICK-a-Jack" as if it is basically those two common names combined. I'm genuinely curious, is it pronounced differently outside of the area? Other than that please don't get discouraged. I know how hurtful some comments can be. We love you! I really did enjoy the video.
If anybody wants to see the original, paper map in the video for the state of Sequoyah, it's located in the Grady County museum in Chickasha, OK (in Sequoyah, it would've been "Bonaparte" county) Side note: Garvin and McCurtain County actually are both in Oklahoma after being proposed in the Sequoyah map. Their borders, however, are different Source: Library assistant and history student at USAO, the university in Chickasha
P.s. With Texlahoma, it failed because there simply aren't a lot of people in the Panhandles of Oklahoma and Texas. The largest city in the area is Boise City (pronounced locally "Boy's City"), and it only has, like, 5,000 people in it.
I recall reading TX was supposed to have been broken up into 4-5 states. Due to its size. Just never happened. In the late 80s early 90s. While I was living in Ca. I recall someone in the political system said to divide Ca into a northern, central, and southern California's. But I was kid at the time and just it heard once on the news.
Last semester, I took a class about US History between 1787 and 1860. During the Whiskey Rebellion, there were calls from people in Western Pennsylvania to create a State of Westsylvania, but instead Vermont and Kentucky became states. Currently, I have heard of proposals to form a State of New California, where the rural more conservative counties secede from the radical liberal coast. They hope to become a state in the same manner as West Virginia, but I believe the 51st state should be Puerto Rico.
Thank you for talking about the proposed state of Deseret after obviously researching it enough, and for not making jokes at the expense of Utah and my Church. I appreciate it. 👍

There have been some efforts to create the state of South Florida out of Miami-Dade, Broward & Palm Beach Counties. Some proposals include more counties as far north as Tampa & Orlando. This is mainly because these countries are traditionally more on the liberal side & they feel that the mostly red counties to the north monopolize the politics of the state.

The UP of Michigan was proposed to be the state of Superior. I know because I used to live in Ironwood in the western most part of the UP and still have a house there. Do Superior for part 2 please.
What do you mean no one knows them all? In the fifth grade, we had to learn all fifty, their capitals and how to spell them. We all learned it and I still remember it without effort.
Some of them that tried to become states in the early days of the US, before states were there are interesting. But anything trying to carve a new state out of existing states is guaranteed to fail. The Constitution expressly prohibits this. Once a state exists, you can't break it into pieces. The one and only time that happened (West Virginia) was a side effect of the Civil War, and nothing short of another conflict that major could possibly break up any existing state.
Illinois has been trying to break from chicago for a while and have springfield as the capital while chicago is basically just cook county. (I am not from this area just from what I've heard from many illinoisians)
I'm born and raised where State of Franklin was. The county I live in, and several surrounding counties, have been in 3 separate states. Hawkins County, Tennessee was once Spencer County, Franklin and Hawkins County, North Carolina.
I've heard north and south Dakota tried to combine their size and form the state of "Dakota" but they failed when the Dakota territory split to two and both became states.
There was a state named Kaskasia which is now part of the present state of Illinois. If memory serves me correctly, you have to enter it from either Missouri or Arkansas. There is even a historic building called the Kaskasia State Hall with its own bell.
I’m American and I know all of the American states and capitals along with Mexican states and capitals and Canadian provinces and capitals, and most countries and their capitals worldwide!
Interesting, I can name them all, in alphabetical order(learned a song in school.) I live in Utah, & the bee thing is still big even w/out the name. I never knew about this name though. I think if I'd read it quickly, there is a chance my dyslexic mind would've seen Desert & that would make sense too, since it's 1. I like the idea of Native Americans naming a state, especially if they could all agree. If not each would've to name counties instead. In fact it would seem right to me, that anyone that had grown up on a reservation, or who they've defined already, get a sum of money, like Alaska does. It wouldn't undo wrong, but maybe help them accomplish what they want for themselves & the next generation.for the record, I don't have any Native American ancestors. I just think they're still being held back. Where this would allow them to build schools, houses, whatever at the level they need to teach their remaining kids, & help them thrive. No doubt people won't agree, but the USA was all their land, till people colonized, & killed them either by bringing disease, or on purpose, then putting them on reservations...
The creator of Rocky and Bullwinkle, Jay Ward had started a movement in 1962 to get an island in Lake of the Woods to become the State of Moosylvania. It occurred around the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis, so nothing came of it.
@@General.Knowledge For DC to become a state, we'd need to amend the constitution or redefine the boundaries of the district. The easiest way would be to redefine the boundaries of the District as the area between the Lincoln Memorial and the Capitol, with a jog out to include the ellipse and the White House. Then retrocess the rest back to the state of Maryland, and they'll end up with another representative after the census. Defining the boundaries of the district is statutory, but allowing the district to become a state in its entirety is not possible because of Article I, section 8 of the constitution.
as a person whos lived in norcal all of my life, i can say that the state of jefferson is still a somewhat big thing, and many people fly the jefferson flag as well as the american flag in their front yard
I saw that as well I’m born and raised in Oklahoma but my gf has family that lives in the Central Valley area and when we went to visit there were a decent amount of people with the state of Jefferson stickers on their cars and what-not. Pretty interesting to think about
Ok I guess I’m weird then because I know all 50 states and capitals, 5 territories and capitals, and the district plus the independent nations in compact free association. And I made sure when my niece was studying this in school that she likewise learned it. Easiest way to remember them is to break them up into regions if you’re a visual learner and picture the map. I can’t name them alphabetically. I can definitely tell you’re not from Oklahoma by your pronunciation of the tribal names. Lol It’s okay, though. It was neat to see you include Sequoyah. That’s usually missing in articles and videos like these. So thanks for remembering it. You are correct. It was very important for the future state of Oklahoma. Our state seal, constitution, and much more are derived from the work already done from the Sequoyah Constitutional Convention. The Oklahoma Constitutional Convention whereby it had been decided to try for both territories to become one state relied heavily on the work done at the Sequoyah Convention. Without that convention and the work it might have taken much longer to achieve statehood. Fun fact: the panhandle of Oklahoma had organized itself into Cimarron Territory. It tried to get federal recognition, but Congress ended up assigning it to Oklahoma Territory. According to most reports at the time, the reason Sequoyah was rejected was because the political affiliation of the people in both territories was largely Democratic and the Congress and President were Republican. So they didn’t want to add 2 new states that would add more of their opposition political party. Oddly the proposed “Cimarron Territory” was And remains very Republican so Congress really goofed when they didn’t let it become a territory if it’s true that the denying the two territories separate statehood was for political purposes. Had they granted the panhandle territory status they could’ve admitted three states (or even four since there was conflict over Greer County between the states of Oklahoma and Texas that finally got resolved). Great video as always! Really enjoy your channel!!
I don't expect anyone not from the US to know all 50 states, but seriously if you're American you should really be able to label them all on a map. I've been able to do that since I was about eight or nine (it was literally a semi-weekly assignment when I was in the 3rd grade to color in a new one on this map we were all given). It wasn't until I got to my first year of college and it was part of a test to label them all when I realized a lot of Americans can't actually do that.

I thought I had just missed it and came to the comments to check. I was excited to learn about that bit since I'm from Florida
What was it called?
I'm lonely Please help Idk I think Republic of Florida and it was Spanish since they tried to get their Territory back but it the Rebellion ended in 1943 and started around Spanish American War I think idk
I like how he really tries to name the Indian tribes! xD
And he's does a decent job at it.
Joseph Esquivel considering English is not his first language, I agree that he’s doing an excellent job.
Just listen to the way he says "Appalachian"
You should do a video on proposed provinces and territories of Canada. There's a lot of them.
Huh... neat
How about instead of making a ton of states out of the ones we already have, make Puerto Rico a state first?
Guam too
Stringer Bell - 93 Mix Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands to make the State of Mariana.

@@charlessapp1835 Why not to boot any existing state that happens to elect a Democratic government? 😃

I think all states in the USA should be redrawn with the motivation of not having so many horrible straight lines.
Imagine how different Wakko's America would be if these states were added.
One of the omissions on your video is for the Michigan upper peninsula to become the state of Superior.
Good catch.
Cool video! I love the graphics. This kind of history stuff is so interesting.
Much interest I have in this video, could we maybe get one about Canada and other countries?

If anybody wants to see the original, paper map in the video for the state of Sequoyah, it's located in the Grady County museum in Chickasha, OK (in Sequoyah, it would've been "Bonaparte" county)
Side note: Garvin and McCurtain County actually are both in Oklahoma after being proposed in the Sequoyah map. Their borders, however, are different

P.s. With Texlahoma, it failed because there simply aren't a lot of people in the Panhandles of Oklahoma and Texas. The largest city in the area is Boise City (pronounced locally "Boy's City"), and it only has, like, 5,000 people in it.
Good to see comments so early
And good vid as always

There is also Upper Michigan as well as the various plans to break up Texas and California.

I've heard that the Northern Peninsula of Michigan has tried to become it's own state in the past by the name of Superior.

The Conch Republic?
@@PeruvianPotato The Conch Republic is only the Keys (the small island chain boarding the Atlantic ocean and the Caribbean). It's a microstate but I like the suggestion.
There have been some efforts to create the state of South Florida out of Miami-Dade, Broward & Palm Beach Counties. Some proposals include more counties as far north as Tampa & Orlando. This is mainly because these countries are traditionally more on the liberal side & they feel that the mostly red counties to the north monopolize the politics of the state.

why did lake Michigan turn into a state? (0:46)
"In our lovely Deseret, where the saints of God are met..." :D
The UP of Michigan was proposed to be the state of Superior. I know because I used to live in Ironwood in the western most part of the UP and still have a house there. Do Superior for part 2 please.
6:11 This woud be a interesting state =D
What do you mean no one knows them all? In the fifth grade, we had to learn all fifty, their capitals and how to spell them. We all learned it and I still remember it without effort.
I learned them in 3rd, but your point still stands.....
5th grade in Utah for me
Some of them that tried to become states in the early days of the US, before states were there are interesting.
But anything trying to carve a new state out of existing states is guaranteed to fail. The Constitution expressly prohibits this. Once a state exists, you can't break it into pieces. The one and only time that happened (West Virginia) was a side effect of the Civil War, and nothing short of another conflict that major could possibly break up any existing state.
except texas
texas has a unique provision in their constitution and approved by the federal government to split itself up into 5 states
@@sheikhalfihri exactly, I didn't feel like elaborating so thank you for doing so
Illinois has been trying to break from chicago for a while and have springfield as the capital while chicago is basically just cook county. (I am not from this area just from what I've heard from many illinoisians)
I have ancestors who lived in eastern Tennessee who went over the border into Kentucky to join units fighting for the North.
Forgottonia?
The states of Confusion, Shock and Despair and Disillusionment were admitted in 2016. :(
I’m American and I know all of the American states and capitals along with Mexican states and capitals and Canadian provinces and capitals, and most countries and their capitals worldwide!
Great video!
2:17 It exists in the Steven Universe universe
Meh
The creator of Rocky and Bullwinkle, Jay Ward had started a movement in 1962 to get an island in Lake of the Woods to become the State of Moosylvania. It occurred around the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis, so nothing came of it.
Pretty sure the 51st state would be either DC or Puerto Rico but we all know that neither of them will become the 51st state.
I think so too! But I doubt it'll happen, at least any time soon.
Or the Superior part of Michigan
as a person whos lived in norcal all of my life, i can say that the state of jefferson is still a somewhat big thing, and many people fly the jefferson flag as well as the american flag in their front yard
At the end, the panhandle of Oklahoma is pointed to but the panhandle of Texas is mentioned.

I don't expect anyone not from the US to know all 50 states, but seriously if you're American you should really be able to label them all on a map. I've been able to do that since I was about eight or nine (it was literally a semi-weekly assignment when I was in the 3rd grade to color in a new one on this map we were all given). It wasn't until I got to my first year of college and it was part of a test to label them all when I realized a lot of Americans can't actually do that.

in the 1970's the northern part of Wisconsin and the upper peninsula of Michigan wanted to become the State of Superior. Both felt that their respective state capitols ignored their needs and development.
