  • Mystic gained fame in recent years for his hit chutney tune “Coolie Bai” even though it’s reggae that’s in his blood. Music is his life. But what many don’t know is that music has been his escape from something that he is opening up about for the first time - his battle with anxiety and depression, which has triggered suicidal thoughts. He was born Romel Nermal in Black Bush Polder, known as the suicidal capital of Guyana and has decided to speak out about his battle with mental health in hopes that it could help others to seek help. He spoke with the News Room’s Neil Marks at a community centre ground in Skeldon, Berbice.
(If you need someone to talk to or if you know anyone who is in need of immediate assistance, please call the Suicide Prevention Hotline on 223-0001, 223-0009, 600-7896, 623-4444 to speak with a professional counsellor.)

My Guyanese brother , mental health is a real issue amongst our people , both in Guyana and the diaspora at large , the most powerful thing that one can do is seek help and leverage loved ones in order to address these topics. Bring these conversations to the forefront and stop stigmatizing mental illness so you and others can get the help they so desperately need. It’s nothing to be ashamed of and it is very admirable that you decided to share your story , I am very happy that you are getting the help you need to heal and encourage you to continue seeking such for it is an uphill battle where everyday is different and requires consistent work. Also I am moved by the assist that the host provided for you in networking and setting up that appointment for you , now you need to pay it forward or I should say continue to paying it forward so you as a local celebrity can give that assist to the next person , you could be saving a life brother.

I discovered Mystic close to 2010? Introduced him (his music) to people soon after that, including to some people in the music scene in Toronto. Many people enjoyed his music, both West Indians & other people too! Blessings & big-up to the Mystic! 🙏
Like Mystic has the dream of brining Guyanese music to the world. I have the dream of seeing all West-Indians rise up, letting their talents shine while living a beautiful life, w/ out the need for alcohol or any other drug to feel like they’re living life. I feel that this aspect of the culture, as fun as it is, is at the same time, the downfall of it. I discovered a way to have more fun, while not compromising on our physical or mental health.
One artiste I can point to, that came to where I’m living now - India (Specifically, Isha Yoga Center) is Machelle Montano. He certainly grew, and discovered life in a deeper way spending time here (Sadhanapada) & even ended up preforming in front of an audience that he probably couldn’t even dream of before, on Maha Shivratri night (2022) the reality must have far exceeded his dream! He always wanted Soca to reach the world & I can tell you, the amount of reach he got that night & with his involvement with #SaveSoil, (I believe) is far more than all of the people who even heard of him before, in all of the years he has been performing.
I hope to come to Guyana & the West Indies to teach classical Hatha Yoga in the coming years, sharing at least a drop of what AdiYogi (Shiva) has transmitted.. And maybe even one day get into the West Indian music scene too!! 😄

Don’t you worry my friend, you will get through this sooner rather than later . As a fan , I always battle anxiety and depression since I was a child growing up till this day , I don’t know what’s your religious beliefs , as a Muslim , I believe that the best way to deal with depression is when I preform the Muslim prayer which helps me tremendously, wI’ve known Mystic and his family quite some time now , but . am not surprised to hear that coming from him , since so many people out there are suffering in silence, I wish him all the best to recovery, and all those people who are dealing with this should get some help , Good luck take care of yourself all the best wishes for you and your family 🙋🏽‍♂️

We are built to withstand the most natural violent storm of life, but when unnatural storm hits us , it has potential to isolate ,or take us out; lets be fair and candid especially to the young men in our blood families, so we can see them have a productive life...
