Đường Xưa Mây Trắng kể chuyện đời đức Phật Thích Ca qua con mắt của chú bé chăn trâu Svasti - sau xuất gia, trở thành một vị đệ tử của Phật. Lối kể tự nhiên, đơn giản, nhẹ nhàng và mang đậm chất thiền của vị thiền sư nổi tiếng Thích Nhất Hạnh sẽ làm cho Quý đạo hữu cảm thấy như mình đang trở về thời Bụt còn tại thế và đang đi theo từng dấu chân của Bụt, từ lúc ngài đản sanh cho đến lúc nhập Niết Bàn.
Có người cho rằng “đây là một “tuyệt phẩm” mà mọi Phật tử, Tăng cũng như tục, đều nên đọc, vì cốt tủy của Phật Giáo được gói trọn trong đó, vì những cái hay cái đẹp nhất của Phật Giáo cũng ở trong đó, và nhất là, chính chúng ta cũng có mặt trong đó”.
Trong cuốn sách, Đức Phật hiên lên gần gũi như một con người bình thường, không phải là một vị thần linh, đó là chủ ý của tác giả: “Không thấy Bụt như một con người thì người ta sẽ với tới Bụt rất khó”. Nếp sống của Đức Phật và các đệ tử xuất gia, đệ tử tại gia hồi ấy được mô tả thật đẹp.
Thông qua những mẫu truyện ở từng chương, chúng ta sẽ rút ra được những bài học quý giá, thấm nhuần những chân lý mà Bụt đã truyền trao lại.
Đường xưa mây trắng bán được hơn 1 triệu bản tại bắc Mỹ và được dịch ra hơn 20 thứ tiếng, trong đó có tiếng Hindu.
Trong bối cảnh xã hội, người người, nhà nhà đua nhau làm giàu bằng mọi giá, mọi cách, các nấc thang giá trị đang bị đảo lộn. Giá trị đạo đức được đặt ở vị trí thứ yếu, thẩm chí còn bị xem nhẹ. Trong bối cảnh ấy, có lẽ tâm đạo, con đường hướng thiện và những giá trị nhân bản cần được nhìn nhận một cách đúng mức. Có thể khẳng định rằng những đóng góp của các tôn giáo nói chung và Phật giáo nói riêng luôn có những giá trị thiết thực, cao qúy trong việc điều chỉnh hành động và lối sống xã hội. Để thể hiện sự đóng góp ấy, nhiều tác giả tâm huyết đã cho ra đời những tác phẩm có ý nghĩa đạo đức, và giá trị nhân văn sâu sắc.
