They had to shorten their song because there was a small timeslot they got, they refused to shorten it so they sped things up!
Thijs van Leer on keyboard and flute, Pierre van der Linden on drums, Bert Ruiter on bass and the best guitarplayer ever, according to Brian May of Queen, Jan Akkerman ……. These are fantastically skilled musicians
That was a great reaction 😅 The tv show they were performing on would only allow 4 minutes and the song is about 7 minutes. They didn’t want to cut anything so they sped it up instead.
This did exactly what it was designed to do, put a smile on your face, nice reaction.
They had a limited time slot on this show, so they sped up this performance to shave off several minutes or so while still being able to play the whole song.

So,.... It's summer 1985. I'm driving with the windows down from where I'm stationed in Virginia to my girlfriend's place in Jersey. At about midnight, this song comes on and I practically break the volume knob trying to turn it up to 11. I'm yodeling at the top of my lungs while at a red light and look to my right and see two young women in the car next to me laughing their heads off. Still yodeling, gave them a wink and kept driving.

Thats a speed up version.. they already had two versions of the song with the faster one called "Hocus Pocus - US version" or as it was called in Europe "Hocus Pocus 2". That version was released in 1972, one year after the first one because the first one didnt do so well on charts.. In 1973 it was released in the US (thus the "U.S. Version"). That version started and ended a little different-funkier and its even shorter than this live one and almost half in duration than the first one.. This live version is even faster, not because they only had 4 minutes as other users suggest (the U.S. Version was 3:30 if I remember correctly) but because they always performed that particular song faster on their live performances, especially after the success of the second version. Many bands performed songs faster in live versions.. for example The Kinks performed "You really got me" almost twice the speed!
Most of not all bands play faster live.
Everyone, literally everyone who watched this performance with me over time was smiling like a madman by the end of it. This is my go to song, in that version, when I want to get absolutely fucking HYPED.
Fyi the drummer throws in quoted homages to Sid Catlett; Jan Akkerman was voted nr 1 guitarist at the time; Focus was groundbreaking genius and mega famous.

This is a somewhat eccentric and overly fast version of this iconic Focus track, entertaining as it is.
May I suggest having a listen to "Focus" instrumental, it's the first track on their first studio album (In and out of focus), will give you more of an idea of what they were about.
The whole album is good mix of all the styles they wanted to embrace at the time.
Pay particular attention to the drums and bass combo, this pairing was changed much to my disappointment due to Ackerman's hissy fits.

Called 'alternate rock' or 'experimental rock' back in the day. Popular in northern europe centered around Amsterdam
Jan Akkerman was chosen Best guitar player on earth a bit later. Jan and Thijs van Leer (the yodel guy) were not friends at the time, and Focus split shortly after. A great band with two huge egos. The drummer and bassist were great musicians too.
You are one of the few that recognizes that drums and bass on this song is out of this world!!
Ehhh. Not exactly... Yet. The real breakdown came during the recording of Mother Focus in 1975. Jan left in 76. The band continued until 1978.
