In the 1990's I worked in animation and this became a helpful inside joke with co-workers. When things got tense we would say "Happy Happy Joy Joy" and immediately laugh and relax.
As messed up as this episode is, Ren genuinely thanking Stimpy at the end was pretty wholesome, because without Stimpy forcing Ren to be happy all the time, he wouldn't have realized what trully made him happy.
They said in the audio commentary on the Season 1 and 2 Uncut DVD set that they couldn't come up with any other way to end the episode, so they just went with that.
‘Hey! I feel great! I love being angry! Thank you, Stimpy!’ Okay for as dark and disturbing as the rest of this is I have to appreciate how wholesome that ending is.

In hindsight it's actually quite insidious for Stimpy to take it upon himself to decide how Ren should feel at all times. On the other hand I wish Stimpy had put that helmet to use at a funeral. [cue maniacal Ren laugh]
The best part about all this is how Ren’s body convulses throughout the episode. You can tell that he’s really trying his best to fight it and that makes it even more disturbing.

I own the entire series on DVD. John K was a genius for creating Ren and Stimpy.
