It took 2000 + years for someone to finally come along and establish the truth of the resurrection of Jesus Christ? It’s more like a rehash of the same flimsy arguments for it. The most powerful and important being in the history of the universe should’ve done a better job. We wouldn’t have the confusion of the thousands of denominations who all believe they’re right and can show it via the Bible. The abrahamic god is a story of failure after failure in his inability to get his creation right.

God's ways are not our ways. God's time is not our time. God's mind is not our mind. The biblical narrative is coherent from the beginning to the end. I would encourage you to delve more deeply into the scriptures as I you will find the it all points to the deity, death, and resurrection of Jesus, which makes possible eternal life for you and I.

Paul never had any direct evidence of the resurrection. Did he learn about it from "others" or did the "Lord" show him in a vision? Either way Paul is one of the first liars and spreaders of inaccurate information.

    • @TopherPearc
      @TopherPearc День тому

@@saltybits9954What direct evidence are you meaning?
Saul was an intellectual, theologian, pharisee, and a roman citizen. He had no reason to completely flush that sweet life down the toilet by doing a 100% about-face one day and follow the very person he absolutely hated. Paul saw the risen Jesus with his eyes. Then he spent the rest of his life proclaiming the risen Lord. JESUS CHRIST OUR LORD AND SAVIOUR!!!
Why would anybody purposefully and knowingly LIE about something they didn't believe in a week ago??? Paul wasn't crazy because there is no evidence of that. He still had just as much schooled and worldly knowledge to test what he already knew and what he saw. He met with people and had further discussions on the matter most likely. GOD WANT'S US TO QUESTION THESE THINGS. Why would so many people in the world today still believe in these lies as you say? In fact a better question would be, why do you not want to believe in a man, Jesus, who historically did NOTHING ELSE BUT GOOD THINGS FOR HUMANITY? What did he lie about? AND BE SPECIFIC!!!
When you answer remember this. There are people who have dedicated their lives to looking into the resurrection and have come up with very good evidence that it happened. Just because you don't like the flavor doesn't make it any less true.

Thank you both for this terrific interview. Love it!! Dr Habermas is so well read, wise and warm-hearted as Prof John Lennox, two of my favourite Christian scholars, along with Sean + Josh McDowell, William Lane Craig, Lee Strobel, Justin Brierley, and Richard Bauckham.
I have some follow up questions and would love to hear Dr Habermas' thoughts on it:
    1) what does Dr Habermas think of the prophecies in the Old Testament that point to the Messiah?
    2) the conversion of Saul of Tarsus who persecuted the early Christians and then became a Jesus follower himself, is a powerful evidence for Jesus' resurrection. Bart Ehrman disputes that by claiming Saul/Paul felt guilty and that's why he became a Christian. What would you respond? I would say Paul was a leading and renowned pharisee, he had a lot to lose and nothing to win when he became a Christian. And nobody is willing to die for something they KNOW to be a lie.
    3) it is unlikely that the early church invented the authors Marc and Luke bc those men were not apostles, Luke even was not an eyewitnes himself. If the church had invented the authors they would have chosen the name of Peter, for instance. I heard Bart Ehrman say something along the lines that the names Marc and Luke could have been invented bc Marc knew Peter and Luke knew Paul, I think in a debate with Bauckham. I find that not convincing at all, why would the church chose no-names instead of Peter himself?

@00:19:02 - Sean and Gary's discussion of his dissertation prompted me to go look it up. There is not a single non-English source in the bibliography, which would be damning by today's standards for any work in history or theology, and Gary was writing back when the vast majority of critical biblical scholarship was taking place in German. Moreover, he identifies editorials appearing in the popular periodical "Christianity Today" as "scholarly articles."
I have started reading it, and am now wondering how on earth this earned him a Ph.D. Maybe there is something more than what I am seeing so far.

    • @deki5119

E.g. Schweitzer, Bornkam, Bultmann, Schleiermacher, Schaafs, Pfleiderer,, Pannenberg, Mowinckel, Moltmann, Lessing, Harnack, Brunner, Strauss, von Balthazar.
And the Christianity Today article that I saw was written by Edwin Yamauchi who is a bona fide scholar. To evaluate its appropriateness I think one would need to actually read the article.

      @DrKippDavis 7 місяців тому

@@deki5119 No. You did not. Look again.
Every one of those citations in Gary's dissertation is to an English translation of a German original. Notice how many of them have included the translator in the entry. There are no German language sources in his bibliography. None. Only English translations. There are no sources written in any other language included, either. It is entirely English language scholarship, literature or English translations.
Scholars write non-scholarly articles all the time. I have done so. But what is never done is confusing these popular publications for "scholarship," even when it is written by scholars.

It is extremely odd for one to get through their Ph.D. without having to read any German or French sources.
Gary's bibliography contains no non-English sources, which is very strange for a Ph.D. dissertation in this topic. Without knowing, it certainly provides the impression that he was not capable of navigating the volumes of extremely important German literature relevant to his thesis.

His argument boils down to 'If you cannot explain these alleged events to my satisfaction you should believe the least likely explanation'. These 'facts' can be explained, and even if we did not have an explanation it would not follow that therefore the resurrection occurred. Paulogia has a natural explanation and it seems very plausible. There could be many many natural explanations for all of these facts that we have access to now or just have not considered. If you look, you can find many actual scientists with peer reviewed studies as contributions to their respective communities that embarked on the journey to disprove what the Bible tells us only to end up being believers and followers of Jesus Christ! The age of the earth is not explained fully by "science", as they had to use a theory or a best guest to even measure the age of the earth, yet the bible contains history and science i.e. creation Every day more is being discovered that aligns more with Creative DESIGN as opposed to a random explosion that somehow created life!!
Scientists studying the Grand Canyon's rock layers & the fossils (how they were grouped together, in rock, confirmed the flood & in doing so it also aligned w/ Bible history & confirmed the real age of the earth, which then makes Creation by God way more plausible. Not a fairy tale at all. Check it out if you dare.

The very best argument you have is that some people in the first century BELIEVED in the resurrection. It's uncontested because it's a mundane claim. Unfortunately what you want your audience to incorrectly infer is "therefore they must have been true" which is contested by nearly everyone. A belief in a thing is not evidence that that thing is correct. You've been directly publicly repeatedly criticized about this, and you haven't yet acknowledged this glaring nail in the coffin of your entire body of work.

If one reads more than just one verse, understanding increases exponentially.
Job was in a deep state of bitterness and moaning over the condition he was now experiencing, so that all objectivity has flown from him.
Humans begin life with a body, (flesh), a soul, and a spirit. The spirit is dormant until it should be quickened (made alive) by becoming regenerated by The Holy Spirit of God (see John 3).
The body of flesh we are born with is a tent for our soul. It is this flesh body that, when it is no longer viable or useful, dies, and does not rise again, until the end of time's journey on earth. Those who only identify with their bodies of flesh, as being the whole expression of themselves, believe that once dead, always dead!
But, as we learn, we are far more than our flesh bodies, and that resurrection of the dead, and the rising of the yet living, (Rapture of), life, at the end of days, will reveal that all is alive in one form or another. At that time (which is drawing ever nearer), we all will have made our final choice - to repent, and believe in Jesus Christ who was offered once for all, the Lamb of God who shed his sinless Blood to pay the price required to save unto eternal life, with Him, every soul who chooses Him. At this regenerative moment, the spirit of that soul also becomes alive (born again). The awakened spirit and soul believes in Jesus, repents, and is saved!
" To wit, God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto Himself" (2nd Corinthians 5:19a).
Years of medicine is only able to address the fleshly body.....hopefully.
God Himself made these bodies for us fearfully and wonderfully, so that we could journey through this three dimensional (4, if including time) experience. His IS AN ENORMOUS and incredible PLAN!!!
      ALL, IN LOVE.

    This is ludicrous.
It always truly puzzles me that Christians never stop and ask themselves why their God has made such an awful job at transmitting his story and his message which, if true, must be the most important thing ever communicated to humanity.
If the Christian God exists, and he is truly omniscient, omnipotent, omnibenevolent, etc, then his message must be the most important one ever, yet he chose to transmit it in one specific place, within a relatively primitive culture, written decades afterwards in a language (Greek) not spoken by most of the principal characters in the story, and written in a book which has allowed for a vast range of interpretations.
Even conservative Christian scholars agree that the synoptic gospels are all anonymous and if pushed to be very specific they will concede that the only named person who claims to be an eyewitness of the resurrected Jesus is Paul. Even so, there are three versions of Paul’s encounter with Jesus in the Acts of the Apostles, all of which could fairly be characterised as some form of vision or psychotic event
Surely Christians should at least consider that their God has done a very bad job? After all, the stakes couldn't be higher . . . Salvation or Damnation.
Even if a Christian thinks that there isn’t a problem, even if they think that the tortuous attempt by Habermas and other apologists to try and wrangle some sense and credibility out of the many evidential problems with the Bible is a worthwhile way to live, then I have one question for them. Could the evidence be better?
Surely an honest Christian couldn't deny that it could be better? For example, as a basic minimum we could have the original texts of the Bible instead of anonymous copies. We could have the text be so clear that the need for interpretation is non-existent, it could be so clear that it wouldn't have generated a vast range of interpretations (and denominations) even amongst Christians. Just ask a Catholic and a Calvinist to tell you about their beliefs and see what I mean.
This being the case what we seem to have is a "perfect being" transmitting the most important message ever in what is clearly an imperfect way. A "perfect being" doing something imperfect. Really?
I simply shake my head. This is ludicrous.

    • @fynflorentine2512
      @fynflorentine2512 7 місяців тому +3

      What?
Who told you that the Gospel was anonymous?
It's been quoted by the Apostolic fathers themselves - aka the people raised by the apostles

    • @heynow1388
      @heynow1388 7 місяців тому

Thanks for your response. I really appreciate it. As I said in my previous post, the overwhelming consensus amongst both Christian and non-Christian scholars is that Mathew, Mark, and Luke are anonymous texts. If you doubt that this is the consensus please research this and you will see what I am saying is true. It would be foolish for me to lie when you and anyone else reading this could check.
The reason that the gospels have names attached to them is simply Church tradition. They are not eyewitness testimonies. You mention the Apostolic Fathers, and this is what I mean bv Church tradition.
There are, however, extremely Conservative Christian (mostly Protestant evangelical scholars) who make the claim that the gospels are not anonymous, but this is because they let their desire that the Bible be inerrant override the facts. Most Catholic scholars don't take this stance; instead they rely on church tradition but when pressed they will admit that, strictly speaking, the only honest answer is that the synoptic gospels are in fact anonymous. For obvious reasons, priests and pastors seldom mention this as it can be a factor in undermining peoples' faith
There are many good r,easons for believing that they are anonymous, not least the fact they they have been dated to 50, 60, 70 years after Christ died when the Apostles would have been long dead. Also, they were written in Greek which Mathew and Mark would not have been able to write. I could go on, but it's all there for you if you want to research it.
Of course, understanding and accepting that the Gospels are anonymous does not prevent anyone from believing in Christianity, it simply enables them to judge the claims of their faith on the basis of facts not untruths. However, the fact that the gospels are not written by eyewitnesses is a major problem for the claims of Christianity.
      Hope this helps.

You know coming back to this, I realized...isn't this all kind of silly? God requires you to believe and repent to Jesus in order to go to heaven. Supposedly that's what God wants too since he loves us so. And yet, we have this guy who has spent over 50 years reading bronze-age stories in order to try to prove it is real to modern audiences. Doesn't that just seem absurd? Why should it be *this* hard to prove God's existence? Why does it all hinge on a single story about resurrection from 2000 years ago? Doesn't the whole thing just seem logically absurd? Doesn't it suggest that the Christian story just isn't real?

I believe it isn’t about proving that God exists. These people dedicate their lives to this because science and faith go hand in hand. It’s meant to be together and we’re encouraged as Christians to not just believe whatever is spoon fed to us. We must have evidence-based faith. Apologists like Sean don’t seek out to prove God’s existence, instead they seek out to deliver God’s message in logic. Hope this helps. You can send me a message if you want to talk. I hope you and your family are well and that you’re having a great day ❤️

  • @sishrac

This was interesting and agreeable for the most part until around 1:31:57, when Dr. Habermas began to assert a series of surprisingly weak arguments, as follows:
    1. That our resurrection body would be a physical one like Jesus', referring to 1 Cor. 15, as if Paul wrote of a bodily resurrection for all the saints of God, meaning the physical raising of the dead. Paul clarified that the raised 'body' will differ from the buried body.
"37 And what you sow is not the body that is to be, but a bare kernel,... 42 So is it with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable; what is raised is imperishable."
    - To imagine God would raise up humans from the dead in a physical body is to be ignorant that in God's design, the physical needs to repeat the cycle of life, which necessitates decay and death in which the Gospel is permanently imprinted. Hence, Paul wrote in verse 50, "I tell you this, brothers: flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable." The physical cannot inherit eternal life, which is spiritual.
The resurrection Paul meant was spiritual, first of all that of the Old Covenant saints from Sheol into the presence of God (Heaven). We read in Hebrews 9 and 11 and in Rev. 6 how these saints eagerly awaited it.
    - In verses 51 - 53, Paul reveals that when they die, those still alive will not all sleep (in Sheol) but will be changed in the twinkling of an eye. Paul wasn't writing about the rapture most Christians are looking forward to.
    - The death swallowed up by victory is spiritual death, the sting of which is sin. Since the Old Covenant Law gives the power to sin and will end with the impending destruction of the temple Jesus spoke of in the Olivet Discourse, victory will be won over spiritual death!
    - this resurrection event will release the souls from Sheol forever. That happened in AD 70 when the temple in Jerusalem was destroyed along with its cultic practice. Christ ended the OC age and brought in the New Covenant Christian age, which has no end where Jew or Gentile is immaterial.
    - And we shall be in heaven when we die because Sheol is cast out.
56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
    2. Another of Dr. Habermas' errors concerns Jesus' statement in Matt. 24: 34 about His returning before that generation passes away.
    - Based on Jesus' proceeding statement that the day and hour no one knows, Dr. Habermas interprets “γενεὰ” (genea) as race instead of what is consistently translated as “generation” in the New Testament.
    - Jesus knew the generational time frame but not the specific day and time detail, something Dr. Habermas didn't consider.
    - He also didn't catch the nuance of the Hebraic term 'the day and hour no one knows,' which the early Jews understood as the new moon festival, which Jesus could very well have hinted at. It turned out that the temple was destroyed in AD 70, around the time.
    - Dr. Habermas chose to ignore wholesale Matthew 16: 28, where Jesus specifically said that some standing there will not taste death before seeing His coming in judgment.
    - He's clearly one of many scholars with a willing ignorance about the modern-day Jews not at all ethnically related to 1st-century Jews of the Old Covenant period. 70 AD ended that age and ensured no one could claim racial pedigree anymore to enter the Kingdom of God. Christ is the only way ever since.
    3. Finally, Dr. Habermas contradicts himself, hoping to be in heaven with his loved one while assuming we're still living in the same era as the writers of the NT who were waiting for Christ's return.
If Dr. Habermas believed Jesus had yet to return, in death, he could only look forward to still being asleep in Sheol until then and not being raised in heaven.
"25 At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; 26 yes, Father, for such was your gracious will." - Matthew 11: 25 - 26
