Thank you 🙏 so much that message just show up ( low battery ) abs I was W.T.F. I completely forgot that you can charge the nest by yourself. Thank you 🙏 again
EXCELLENT tip on how to charge via USB-C! I have five wires, including the C, but every now and then I get a Low Battery and it doesn't work Thank you!
This was really helpful, just bought a house with one of these. This guy felt like I was listening to a cool uncle talk to me the whole time, felt really at home, thanks!
I love being the cool uncle, pull my finger hahaha. I am happy to hear this worked for you. Enjoy that new house. Check the dryer vent to make sure it is cleaned out, no fire hazard, and change your furnace filter.
If the AC or heat is ON for prolonged periods of time the power scavenging for charging the thermostat is not possible which is when the battery buffers power supply. When your battery gets old it can’t maintain the voltage for as long. When the battery voltage sags below 3.8 volts the nest drops Wi-Fi to conserve power and local control. The way to over come this is to wire the C terminal to the 24v ac supply from the control board or 24vac supply. You can also change your battery with a replacement from Amazon.
Couldn't really tell for sure, but it didn't look like the "type C" charger to me. I think those are called "micro" chargers. The "type C" chargers look like a flattened oval to me, the micro ones have slanted edges so one side is smaller than the other.
I tried everything before with zero success. After watching your video I reset the furnace and the system began working again. The LIN was at 20 and now it reads 40 and the problem has been resolved. Thanks for the suggestion to reset the furnace, that worked for me.
Thank you so much for this helpful video because my Nest was giving me the same issues! And I did exactly what you instructed and it fixed it! I appreciate this video!
Thank you so much for your knowledge on this matter of the Nest thermostat. I have learned something new and thanks for the tip too. Stay safe and God Bless.
Thank you! I wish I had looked for your video instead of wasting my time on the Nest web site and app to figure out what was happening. They are going to run this product in the ground with terrible customer support. Glad you shared this info. Cheers.
Frosty I see you too have a humidistat as I do for the winter. I tried integrating it into the Next (Learning Thermo, just like yours) and could not get it to work even after reading through Google ideas. I gave up and have it run separately. Why didn't you hook your's up?
I have a blank screen. I charged the front with a cable, and it started back up, but stopped again. Tried the furnace stuff, and I was afraid of it. I did fill up the water hose with vinegar water. Did the electrical panel, and now it’s blank again. Everything in this 1958 house goes wrong, even though I had it inspected and everything was perfect!
Same issue. I reset the whole system, charged the Nest with the android cable, cleaned the outside coil with 409 and power washed the unit from all of the built up soot and grime. Nest worked back up and the voltage returned to normal from VOC 7.37V to VOC 36.14V. Thank you.
Some people get lucky and they have enough of a charging current supplied by their system to maintain proper battery voltage. If you are plagued with low battery issues that come and go, have the C wire connected! Nest saying that the C wire isn't needed is BS. That method does not work well for all systems.
@@FROSTYLIFE HI. Mine is hooked up that way too. And I may have finally figured it out. When the thermostat is turned off, it drains the battery. Now we leave it on heat, but keep it turned way down when not in use. It seems to be charging.
My thermostat has been saying it has a low battery and I changed it and now it’s saying no power. I have reset it multiple times and even tried factory reset. No avail. Is there a way to have it run on just the battery instead of the direct source? I don’t have the thermostat where you can charge
Hey Frosty, story here, my wife was throwing a dog toy down the hallway and knocked the nest off the wall and damaged it. It was in the middle of the winter in Canada so I sent her out to buy a replacement. I installed the new Google version on the old Nest wall mount. Now it is 8 months later and I get low battery displays. Just wondering is there is a difference between older versiion and new google ? Currently charging with a usb and have turned off the furnace awaiting charge of thermostat.
I really dont know the answer to that. There are some very helpful Google forums that provide specific instructions for special circumstances like this. Perhaps your internet signal at the location is too weak. Try to move your modem closer. If the last one charged properly through your wiring, then this one should too. In my experience, low battery often occurs from weak internet and the thermostat wears the battery down in trying to connect.
I have been using this for a year. It worked all winter without any issue because thermostat get chrged by 12 v from furnace and now furnace is in sleep because nobody using heating right now. So resting the furnace will cause to charge the battery of thermostat.
Without a "C" wire your nest will not charge. See any number of other YTube videos for info on adding a "C" wire if your thermostat wire only has 4 leads in it.
@@MrXMasterTrader Been wrong before. Perhaps mine needs 5 wires because the furnace is a heat pump with emergency resistive heat backup. Mine was not charging at all without a C wire so I would say that I'm wrong as it pertains to your system...but not mine.
@@patbowen9704 Great, thanks for the response. Every house is different. The best way to find out is go to the "Technical Info" of the Nest, in the "Power" option, if the "lin" is 40ma when the Nest is idle, you are fine. If "lin" is 20ma, then you would need the Common wire.
@@MrXMasterTrader Thanks for the clarification. Lots about these devices that isn't covered in any manual. I guess enough of them work just fine out of the box to allow them to be a success for Nest. I'm tenacious and like to know how things work.

This was 4am this morning. I hung up his call and tried calling back, the phone will answer but no response before disconnecting. I called a friend to call who lives 37 miles away and he got through. He put the phone on a three way call and I spoke with someone else who then rectify that Chris could not have been putting in the correct email. So disgusting! I was referred to a local troubleshooting company but hopefully your method works. Thanks again
Mine literally just did that lol 😆 I just walked over to the thermostat as soon as I started to turn the dial it reconnected smh. The way I wired mine the red wire go's to RC not rh didn't think it would matter
Hi. Please help me. After connecting C wire, everything (Cool, Heat, Fan) is functioning. It shows a new wiring configuration and the current now reads 200mA. The battery voltage is 3.4V (low). The problem is after few minutes, a message pops up "the nest thermostat needs to shut down to recharge the battery", and it turns to the black screen. I thought after adding a C wire, the battery is not an issue anymore. What else I should do?
did u ever figure the problem out? i had it go crazy yesterday after installing it, it’d reset all the time, low battery warning, and lag really bad. I don’t have a C wire and i’m getting that wire installed today but i charged mine thru the wall for an hour or so and it made it thru the night but it kept turning the furnace on and off this morning which was odd but apparently it’s due to old wiring. it’s really confusing tbh
Could the low power be a possible symptom of a bad transformer in the furnace? If it is what kind of transformer is it and where can I find it in the furnace? Thank you
I bought one of these Used, After installing it, it said "low battery"... I took it off charged it with USB, then put back on and after several hours later, even overnight, full charged! went from 3.52 battery/lin 20 to 3.72 battery/ lin 40! (Look under Tech Info)

Restart worked for me to resolve the low battery issue which occurred after power was cut overnight. Thanks for the help!
Did you restart your thermostat or your furnace? Or both? TIA

Wrong, on my system, the charge power that keeps the NEST charged is hooked up to the master power for the furnace. It is how it is wired

I need entry key afraid to remove cover do I need to twist left or right to remove
It just pulls right off
Just pull it straight out
Why is there an old thermostat next to the Nest?
That is a system to circulate fresh air into the house and control humidity

How long should you charge it for ?
@LeeVincent-f1z unfortunately there is no indication of charge level but I charge for at least 6 hrs
