    5/7/18 UPDATE: Oculus Chief Scientist, Michael Abrash, now says he probably *undershot* his predictions for Gen. 2! This is amazing and exciting news! Source: www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/8hotqt/michael_abrash_on_his_2016_prediction_that_high/

      God damn, and here i was thinking the prediction was maybe a bit over estimated, i'm happy now, this is awesome.

      Technology can accelerate if there is a demand and there is a large investment rolling in to make it happen.
      Still, I wonder how far humans can push displays to have more resolutions as much as possible? It gets harder to shrink each pixel at some point unless you want to rely on some illusion to warp the pixels together.

    • @cooleobrad
      @cooleobrad  6 років тому +4

      I don't think there is anything physically limiting the progression of displays, its more so a matter of finding cheap and effective ways to manufacture and power them. AMD has said their target for future graphics cards is 16K res w/ 240Hz refresh rate. 8K displays are starting to become a thing as well and display manufacturers spend millions each year in R&D. It's likely VR will move to OLED microdisplays or some sort of retinal projection in the future either way.

      This is great but my biggest problem with VR has always been the availability of good VR content.
      We could have the perfect tech but it doesnt matter if all the games are all awful.

    I'm a Vive owner and I recently got into VR about a month ago.
    I don't care what company does what and who's better. I'm just happy that VR is constantly improving and becoming / became a thing.
    That's all that matters to me. Keep up the good work!!

      Exactly! VR was something back then that was only imagined and seen in movies, and now its real!!! and with the current available Vive and Rift, Its immersive! I am excited that its going further and further!!
      This is my childhood dream turned into a reality!!! and still improving!!!

      Yep! Hopefully this prototype inspires HTC, Sony, and other companies to match or surpass these features. Either way the consumer wins because VR is being pushed forward!

      CooleoBrad exactly. just like the fight of gaming consoles and the fight of smartphones with oculus fighting for the top spot and htc getting dethroned the cycle will begin. and new additions like sony that you mentioned will jump in to fight for their own slice. thus the competition only gets stronger

Basically I’ve never been so blown away at a new piece of gaming tech in my life. This is for sure the future of gaming and media in general. Hopefully support stays strong for VR.

From social experiences like VRchat of Uganda Knuckles fame, to living an action movie in Superhot VR, or zombie movie in Arizona Sunshine... I personally spend far too much time inside racing sims, Assetto Corsa, PCars2, and iRacing (I hear) all have excellent VR modes.

    Honestly, with the remarkably rapid improvement in VR technology, we may have some stuff in less than 15 years that causes VR to become almost entirely indistinguishable from reality. So much hype for Rift 2! I own a Rift already, and I am totally willing to put in the bucks if this comes out within a year or two.

    All I can say is that HTC needs to step up their game. The Vive Pro is basically the Samsung Odyssey with full hand tracking for more than double the price. 3x the price if you get it on sale like I did for $400

    • @suicidalbanananana
      @suicidalbanananana 6 років тому +7

      The Vive Pro is most of all HTC completely murdering the quite big lead & good name they had in the VR community up until that point, its a vive 1.5 without controllers or tracking stations, for more then the initial price point of the first (complete set) Vive, they're absolutely insane, i get how its for business use or whatever but then just dont even try and sell it to normal consumers and advertise it left and right as the new & improved Vive, we instead want a proper new headset, not a re-release at a ridiculous price
      @Harry1203: First off im getting more and more skeptical about that LG headset, where is it, expected to have heard from LG about it by now after the months of rumors. Also Valve actually designed most of the hardware on the Vive, they pretty much gave HTC a complete picture of how to make it (similar to how they have done for Oculus with the DK1 before the whole Facebook ordeal) and then HTC used their own screen sources and production lines, but yea, the (hardware) design is like 90% Valve. They dont appear to take a cut for hardware sells btw.

    • @ferretmaster22
      @ferretmaster22 6 років тому +3

      I wouldn't worry about it, once one Headset Manufacturer releases new specs designs and ideas, the other Headset Manufacturer buys one, takes it apart, examines it and goes "ahh that's how they do it" then design their own version of that design, its good for us as consumers because it keeps both companies going and a bit of competitiveness keeps them on their toes to keep making it better.

      By the way. Uploading frequently and following everything that UA-cam Academy (free courses from UA-cam) advises does the trick. Between 2012 and 2018 I gained 19K subscribers. This year it suddenly went from 19K to 66K in a couple of months because I upload more and make more videos about popular subjects.

      Valve makes money on Oculus Rift by taking cut from every sold game on Steam. They didn't even want to make their own headset, because it's very hard to make money on hardware margins. This is why they were sharing all their VR research with Oculus. They changed their mind when Facebook acquired Oculus and created their own ecosystem starting with Oculus Store on GearVR - a competing digital store is a threat to Steam's income, not hardware on its own.

      A complete Vive Pro package, with headset + controllers + lighthouse basestations, costs $1400. Even *more* with 2.0 controllers & basestations.
      Oculus will leapfrog the entire industry hard for the next few generations. No other company is dedicating as much resources into the singular focus of VR.

    They can still use higher rez screens with a larger fov without killing a gpu. Because with eye tracking they can introduce foveated rendering now right!?

    • @cooleobrad
      @cooleobrad  6 років тому +1

      Yes hopefully that will be the case and it will be effective at 4K. John Carmack said in 2016 on foveated rendering, "Today, it might be a net negative due to rendering additional views. It will only be critical with much higher resolution displays." There is foveated rendering in Oculus Go and Batman Arkham VR implemented foveated rendering as well, so hopefully Gen 2 VR will have this as a feature. Part of it is support in GPUs as well, I think Nvidia's 10 and maybe 900 series supports this, but not any AMD cards to my knowledge.

      For this shit? Rather wait till end of this year for pimax 5k+ or late/early 2019/2020 pimax 8k X. 5k + : 200FOV, 2560x1440 per eye, 90hz, same and even more better features even oculus 2 wont have. 8k X: same es 5k+ but 4k per eye. 8k X will simply screw every todays and upcomming headsets for at least 3 next years or it will even hold up till 3th Gen headsets gonna be released. And all of this just for 900USD (8k X) for full package (700 for 5k+). Why so cheap for such performance? Its not a big brand, because then it would costs around 3k USD! Simply dont always trust and looking for big brands like apple because then you mostly pay for just the brand, not performance :)

    I just got into VR fully this month and I'm blown away at how far the technology has matured. I'm thoroughly impressed but immediately observed room for improvement. Thankfully much of what I thought could be done was already considered for the next release. I eagerly look forward to R2 for Occulus - especially in the area of fully body tracking. I hate having to employ a hack just to achieve this effect in vrchat and other avatar socially driven VR media.
    I can only imagine what the technology will look like 20 years from now. Probably a silver of tinted glass driven by membrane technology to simulate actual eye behavior.. caching on the headset, and zero controls other than a haptic suit to feel what's going on in VR.- SAO here we come :)

    Pixel density is the big thing for me. I want the next vers to have much less fly screen. I use it purely in a race simulator and the flyscreen effect hurts the whole experience. I really couldnt care less about the controllers i much rather just have a single button on the side for passthrough and less screen door thatll do me. Go oculas keep this acceleration going but please send someone over to nvidea to get a card out to drive this thing at 90fps otherwise its triples and more waiting.

      I think we will see at least 4x the resolution on 2nd Gen headsets and likely HDR. The HTC Vive Pro is 3x and it's still current gen. However... if we want 4x greater pixel density using these optics the resolution will need to be we will need closer to a 6x resolution increases because of the 40% bump up in FOV.

    1:47 The skeleton tracking is the same tech as kinect from xbox 360 on a fixed distance and on solid background no less.

    • @cooleobrad
      @cooleobrad  6 років тому

      Not true. This tracking is done using just a generic camera as opposed to the depth sensor on Kinect.

    • @rachelslur8729
      @rachelslur8729 6 років тому +1

      CooleoBrad *Wrong!* Kinect has a normal camera and infrared camera, it calculates depth between them to help isolate the human from the background, this task becomes trivial if the human is standing in front of a static solid background like in the video. Kinect would perform great if you stood in front of a static solid background even if it didn't have 2 cameras.
      Notice how shaky the recognised skeleton is even while the human performes simple to cruedly recognise poses and doesnt perform something like shooting a bow, playing chess or violin. This Oculus skeleton demo didn't improve💩! It's a cheap ploy for uninformed at best and a scam at worst.

    • @cooleobrad
      @cooleobrad  6 років тому +1

      Still not seeing how my comment is wrong. The tracking shown here doesn't use an infrared camera (less parts = cheaper than Kinect) and is also much lower latency than Kinect. In addition, this is all being run on a smartphone. Therefore it is *not* the same tech as Kinect. The skeleton is shaky because this is merely a proof of concept showing what Oculus is working on, this can easily be smoothed out with a low-pass filter on the data stream as the tech nears a consumer release. The tasks you mention, "shooting a bow, playing chess, playing violin" will likely be able to be detected by combining this tech with sensors/cameras on the headset itself in the future. This isn't a scam or a ploy considering nothing is being sold and nothing shown is a dishonest representation of their progress. Some more info here: ua-cam.com/video/VESlZP1GZcQ/v-deo.html and perhaps clips I should have also included showing off 3D body tracking that looks very promising as well.

    I’m hoping these will start having some type of sense gloves in them eventually, something that lets us feel the things we touch in game and possibly even lock in to place when we do grab something so it actually feels like we touch it. Also the blink tracking makes me really hope for a Doctor Who weeping angel game, imagine actually having to keep our eyes open to survive the game

    Rift's FoV is 95 degrees, not 100.
    46% wider FoV.

    • @cooleobrad
      @cooleobrad  6 років тому +3

      I've heard everything from 90 to 110. At F8 Maria said current VR headsets are ~100 degrees so I just went with that number. Either way, the FoV increase is a substantial improvement.

    • @slopedarmor
      @slopedarmor 6 років тому +1

      Doesn't the spec sheet of the rift say 110 degrees? 95 degrees seems too low to me. It could be the fov of a single lens but the total fov is larger than that because the overlap is not 100%.

      No, its approx. 95! Oculus repeated their original spec number while steadily reducing FOV through DK2 and CV1 to negate the screen door effect everyone was complaining about..
      Nate Mitchel has said the CV1 is around 100 and in the above video Maria confirms 100 - even though analysis has put it at 95.

      If the google cardboard has a 90 degree FOV, then there's no way the rift is just 95. I have both and the difference is much more than just 5 degrees.

    • @cardcounter21

      Google cardboard probably has less than 90 in reality. The Rift is definitely not more than 100 and general analysis has suggested it is around 95.
