Couple things of note ... as helpful as this video is, my 2000 HOB purchased in June of 2018 is slightly different than this. Only 2 o_Rings ... not 3. Took me some time to figure that my unit is a newer model and the O-Ring in the pump has been replaced by pre-installed rubber gaskets. Also if you are looking for the place to put the white air valve, you really don't need it. Just ignore that it exists. You can prime the pump without it. Finally ... i had a heck of a time getting my pump to prime. Finally I read online where some guy was having the same problem and he kept plugging in and unplugging the unit and finally it took. I tried that and it was my solution too. I was ready to send it back ... glad I exercised a bit of patience and did some research. I love the fact that there is a pinwheel in this pump and the tiny bubbles it produces are outstanding ... hopefully the micro bubbles in the exit flow will dissipate a bit in my tank as the unit breaks in.
Thanks for your comments. There is still three orings as you stated one is now pre-installed because it was common for users to assemble the skimmer without it. When doing so it locks up the union connection making it near impossible to separate. So the factory began pre-installing that oring. When priming the pump make sure the back of the skimmer is filled all the way and the air is completely closed. If you don't use the included air valve then pinch the airline completely closed. Any air entering will inhibit or slow the priming process. Enjoy your new skimmer Mr. Mattox.
Yes, the exit cage is slightly different on the Classic 2000HOB you have and the Classic 1000 HOB shown in the video. However the overall function and design is the same.
Hello! Great video. I just picked up a used 2000HOB and have it set up on my 90 gallon. I am upgrading from an Eshopps PSK 75 HOB. My question is the Eshopps collection cup has an overflow hose to prevent the cup overflowing out on the floor, directing it back into the tank. What happens if the collection cup fills up on the Reef Octopus HOB 2000? The small overflow hole that leads back to the tank is for water that isn't in the cup yet.
Hello just purchased this I heard you have to cut down the PVC on the intake mine is not flush with the top of the water like you explained. Or is it ok to be under about 2” ? Thank you
Greg Wood I have the same question. I want to put it HOB of a sump and since the water level in the sump is about 8-9 inches I need to extend them, at least the intake. It seems the upvc pipe of the inlet is something QUITE special because I went to Home Depot, Lows, local fish superstore, hardware store and NO ONE has something to extend it. The outside diameter(OD) of the pipe is 1". Try looking locally for a coupler who's ID is 1", let alone the pipe itself!
The cup can extend below the overflow hole but it is not suggested when first setting up the skimmer or when the internal water level is near or at the hole indicating an unbalance in your tanks water. The hole is to prevent the water from overflowing the cup but when in normal conditions the hole, although covered will still allow water to bypass since there is a small gap between the cup and the hole. Most tanks I have setup using the skimmer have always had the cup reside much higher on the skimmer.

But my seller says I also need a venturi connector that will be another 27 bucks to the 80 for the pump. My question is is do I need to but the connector or can I use the one that was originally on it?
When i filled my skimmer and plugged the vent line to plug it in, i have no bubbles. What could be the cause? It was working fine for two weeks then no bubbles but pump is still running?
I just got this skimmer today and installed it a few hours ago, but my bubbles are not going up the neck like yours are and I can't seem to figure out why. Any suggestions?
Just got this skimmer, followed all instructions on this video and got it up and running. Now... the pump seems to be generating quite a turbulence, there is a LOT of water/microbubbles coming through the overflow hole into the chamber housing the exit elbow. This leads into the tank and the sponges do a very poor job of stopping this huge amount of microbubbles entering the tank. The microbubbles just overwhelm the entire 55gal tank. In this video, i see there is only a small amount of water, and virtually no microbubbles making their way across to the exit chamber. What could be the problem with my setup?
It sounds like there is something in the water itself reacting with the air produced by the skimmer pump. Here is a link of know things that cause skimmers to go nuts. www.coralvue.com/support/935227-Skimmer-overflowing If it is only microbubbles it could just be due to the oils of manufacturing and handling which will dissipate the longer the skimmer runs. If you wanted to you can give your skimmer a diluted vinegar bath to help remove the oils.
Question. So the silencer has two connection options. One is extended inside the silencer. The other connection has nothing..meaning it just dead-ends inside the silencer. You say connect to the one that does not extend into the silencer...the dead-end one? If I do that I get no micro bubbles at all, because no air gets into the air line. Am I doing that correctly?
All the silencer does is creates a channeled path making an interruption in the vacuum sound. The is a channel which should not disrupt the air intake either way the airline is attached.
I just got mine and my water level isn't low enough for the inlet to skim the surface. If i drain the water to this level my canister filter outlet is out of the water and i dont want to listen to a waterfall all day and night. Can i shorten the pvc?
Yes. You can place a small bag of the media. Just be mindful not to obstruct too much of the chamber blocking the passage of water. I would also suggest to rinse the media pouch daily to remove any accumulation of debris because restricting flow within the last chamber will cause water to raise within the reaction chamber.
im looking at buying one of these, how big of a tank rim will this fit? mine is 1 1/4 wide and ive been having trouble finding a skimmer that will fit over it.
@@davepage8048 By filling the body prior to plugging in the pump helps equalize the pressure and submerses the pumps impeller in water so that it can prime. That is why filling the skimmer body with water prior to stating is important. I assume that you have enough water in the body if it is channeling back to the display tank.
Collection cup fill rate depends on what is in the water to be pulled out and the setting of the skimmer. There are some things that cause skimmers to overproduce due to the change in the waters surface tension. You cleaned the walls of the skimmer pipes that were covered in bacteria. Likely with the introduction of oils from handling the skimmer will go through a short break in period like when you first installed the skimmer but with a much shorter durration.
We omit the air valve because it is not needed or recommended. It is intended to be used to restrict the airline to prime the skimmer pump. We suggest to just pinch the airline till the prime takes place.
One more question can the tube be shortened , even at its highest level both skimmer tube sit tonlow in the tank based on recommended height in the video

You likely are doing nothing wrong as microbubbles exiting the skimmer is common with new skimmer during the break in process. If your skimmer is overflowing it likely is do to something to the water which will need to be addressed before the skimmer can return to normal operation.
If the skimmer is new or just thoroughly cleaned it is normal for skimmers to produce microbubbles till the skimmer Seasons (breaks in). Certain additives also change the water's chemistry and can cause excess foaming and or microbubbles to escape the confines of the skimmer.
I like the reef octopus line and I have 2 of them simmers myself. but it sucks that right at the year mark one of them the pump works at 1/4 of the speed and I would of thought I would have gotten more then a year out of up before going out.
As long as the pump and impeller assembly has been cleaned to like new condition and soaked in vinegar solution, usually replacing the impeller will get the pump back to 100%. The impeller could have dead pockets or depolarization.
I suppose it is possible as long as the intake of air is not compromised. Especially with HOB skimmers the intake of air can lead to problems. If you do pursue to run an CO2 scrubber I would suggest using a overflow safety device in place like the one here: www.coralvue.com/smart-skimmer-security
i have the 2000 and i need a bit more help, what your showing installing the pump . does not have a small ring and there is not thing to tighthen to the pump it just goes in, also the other thing doesnt move at all
I don’t want to speak for the company, but I just got mine today 4/17/2020 and the plumbing for the pump has changed. The part with the air line just pushes into the pump, no tightening ring required.

Is the skimmer pump loud ?
Theres a little overflow hole below the collection cup. Does the cup have to be abkve the hole? Or can it drop below it?

I just purchased this 1000hob skimmer and I don't know why is making too much micro bubbles ???
Microbubbles are normal during the break in period which can last up to 3-4weeks.
When i filled my skimmer and plugged the vent line to plug it in, i have no bubbles. What could be the cause? It was working fine for two weeks then no bubbles but pump is still running?

I shortened mine for that reason. A lot of people do. I cut my intake tube so that it is about 1/2” in the water.

Depends on the model you are looking at. The 1000HOB won't since it maxes at 1.18in but the 2000HOB can fit up to a 1.77in rim.

Ok, then your skimmer is set to run. You just want to fill the skimmer body so the pump has less work to draw the siphon from the aquarium.

When I bought the reef oct 1000 it came with an "air valve", what do I do with that?
It is only used to prime the pump. I just prefer kinking the air line or simply holding my finger over the end to draw a siphon.

i had a similar issue with that fastener not moving....it was defective and i was able to return it.
