I love all the Mexican Sones that Copeland intertwined in this suite. The trumpet solo is so very enchanting & yet haunting. This music is a very beautiful tribute to Mexico.

This is an extremely difficult work to perform, but this conductor and orchestra make it seem so easy!! Art concealing art!! Excellent performance!
Difficult to practice to, though. Especially if you are a percussionist and have to count all…those…measures.

La pieza se originó en un viaje que Copland hizo a México en 1932. Entre muchas otras actividades visitó un salón de baile. El Salón México había abierto sus puertas en abril de 1920 y tenía una sala de espejos y tres pistas de baile clasificadas según la clase social que allí realizaba sus maromas: "Mantequilla" para la clase alta, "Manteca" para la clase media, y "Sebo" para los pobres, que también gustan de bailar, cómo no. Lo curioso -pese a la situación política presente o, acaso, debido a ello- es que todos se congregaban en el mismo recinto, bailando digamos que juntos aunque no revueltos.

+Dagoberto Espinoza Se dice que dos de las salas de baile eran una para gente humilde pero con zapatos y la más "popular", para gente descalza. En esta última había un letrero pidiendo que no se tiraran colillas de cigarro en el piso para que las damas no se quemaran los pies

Lo que inspiró a Copland para componer su Salón México fue el espíritu de la gente que se encontró ahí.
Carlos Miguel Prieto, el mejor director de orquesta de la actualidad, dando a conocer obras poco conocidas referentes a Mexico, en el extranjero.
Aunque mi versión favorita sigue siendo la de New Philharmonia dirigida por Copland (le da el grado exacto de dinamismo y calidez), esta es muy buena, especialmente considerando que no es muy interpretada en Europa. Excelentes músicos lidereados por un buen director.
Pocos saben que Juan Pablo Moncayo, autor del icónico Huapango, fue alumno de Aaron Copland en Estados Unidos, probablemente por eso el Huapango se basa, como El Salón México, en varios sones populares mexicanos.

Very nice! I like it! For years I've heard of this name Copland, in magazines, music stores, famous musicians mentioning his name in books, etc... and didn't pay any attention! So, today I'm reading a little book about Copland and the author mentioned this Copland's piece incorporated Mexican folk tunes, melodies, and themes to this piece, but the piece became his very own, and people liked it became popular. Author said, Copland fused modern music of the time Copland was in, I supposed, the early 1900's American music. Author is right, this music is right there in my alley. In my case then, after listening to lots of Mozart's endless repertoire for years, from various conductors, various orchestras, various players, from just one Mozart piece alone (and Mozart had many), I think it's time to expand hear more music out there. Now this piece by Copland is an excellent alternative from Mozart to have in my car. Will get to know more music from Copland! TY! Merry Christmas!!!

It’s so pleasant to see a “kasimanwa” (I’m from Balete; came to New York for graduate studies in late 1969 and returned to the old homeland only twice since then.) also appreciate Aaron Copland’s compositions, albeit discovering this perhaps 4 years too late! Indeed, Copland is often referred to, especially because the American Ballet Theatre Company ABT) and the NYC Ballet Company (NYCB) often produce the ballet suites he had been commissioned for their “new” choreography. I turned 79 this month and have been listening to classical and jazz music since my father bought and installed a Philips radio (complete with rooftop antenna and “ground wiring”) in 1952-53. My family has been in retirement in Arizona for nearly 24 years now, but the 30 years of life in Manhattan (grad sch, career, family life) have been like manna from heaven for me because of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts where the Metropolitan Opera, the NYCB, the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, and Juilliard School reside. Hehe, I went off on a tangent in my excitement over discovering a “kasimanwa” who shares a common interest with me. If I hadn’t awaken with Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man buzzing in my head this morning, I wouldn’t have found you! Anyway, my favorite Mozart are his compositions for the clarinet and the operatic stage. I presume you have seen the movie, “Amadeus.” If you’re still a UA-cam subscriber, I suggest that you try listening to another American composer, Samuel Barber. The rest are Europeans: Anton Bruckner’s symphonies, especially Nos. 4,5,7, & 8. Other composers I recommend listening to are Ricchard Wagner, Max Bruch, Camille Saint-Saens, Alexandr Borodin, Maurice Ravel, Faure, Rimsky-Korsakov, Sibelius, Dvorak, and Grieg. I’m sure you’re thoroughly familiar with Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Vivaldi, Boccherini, Tchaikovsky, Chopin, Liszt, Verdi, Puccini, et al. Happy listening.

just like Bernstein and Zinman, Prieto gets the tempo just right and doesn't rush the music truly deep feeling with the strings in the opening measures.

El Salón México se abría a todas las clases sociales de la ciudad y tenía tres espacios, para las diferentes categorías sociales, y el peladaje las llamaba, con humor, sorna y realismo como el de sebo, el de manteca y el de mantequilla.

Lo que me parece extraño de la obra de este gran compositor norteamericano (quizá el mejor de todos ellos), es el titulo de la misma. Siendo el "Salon Mexico" un sitio de baile popular, donde seguramente era el danzón el genero mas socorrido, en ninguno de los fragmentos de esta obra, se aprecia, ni remotamente dicho genero. Es meritorio, que Coplan, siendo extranjero, haya asumido en forma tan magistral, la gran variedad de temas folklóricos de Mexico. Un dato curioso: por la fecha de su creación, pienso que el vino a Mexico a refugiarse, porque en su Pais, fue perseguido por el fatal ·mac arthismo, pues fue acusado de comunista. Pues si así fue, ¡que bueno, pues no dejo una de sus mejores obras".
Dicen q Copland fue a Mexico en 1932. McCArthy fue mucho después

Copland stated himself that this piece in no way should be considered as reflecting the tunes played in a danzon club. He said that it should be taken more as the musical impressions of a tourist traveling through Mexico.

Maravillosa pieza y magnífica dirección, de Carlos Prieto es un portento y todo un caballero, cuando dirigía la OSX fué impresionante jamás faltaba al T. Clavijero en el puerto, recuerdo la extraordinaria dirección, y las obras de Mahler eran el paraíso bajo su dirección, MAESTRO ERES UN VIRTUOSO!!! BRAVÍSIMO. En Verácruz te amamos.

I am playing Eb clarinet for this. It's so much fun :)
Peter Hadcock (former BSO Eb clarinetist) wrote a book called "The Working Clarinetist". It's sort of an excerpt masterclass book. It includes the Eb excerpts from El Salon Mexico, along with some interesting notes about how he played it along with his experience playing it for Copland. He says that the Eb is supposed to be really messy in the solos around 9:15
I've never heard a version quite like what he described, but I think it works really well.
Hadcock also wrote a seperate book for Eb only, which doesn't include E. S. Mexico but does have a complete transposed (to Eb) part of Till Eulenspiegel

This is another fine performance by Prieto and the Frankfurters (their Shostakovich 6th is superb!). I sometimes like to hear this favorite at a faster tempo however; this one is even slower than Copland's recording which I own. Fiedler's Boston Pops version was quite exciting, presenting the score in only 10 minutes. I also have a fondness for Bernstein's "Columbia Symphony" version; his moderate tempo seemed about right to me. (I'm not really nitpicking; I think Prieto's is expressive and convincing also.)
You might wish to set the speed of the video to 1.25 - for several passages of this video it seems to work as least as good.

The more widely I listen to Copland - I'm English, so we don't often see him programmed here - the more I like his music. We get even less of his contemporaries, e.g. Roy Harris. Both wrote fine Third Symphonies!

Kein amerikanischer Komponist hat "Amerika" je besser erklingen lassen als Aaron Copland. Man kann die Weite und das Land in seiner Musik direkt spüren. Fantastisch. Und L.Bernstein war sein ebenso legendärer Nachfolger, der sein Land gleich treffend in Musik dargestellt hat. Geniales Duo.

Great performance. A few stray notes but both the orchestra and conductor look comfortable and that's half the battle with this piece. It's a strange TV direction though. Was the director not directing from a score? Seems like they are reacting to the music rather than having planned a cut in advance.

I like this piece of Mexican music by Aaron copland. It is very similar to moncayo,s haupango. I like both pieces,but I believe Haupango sounds more joyful and more mexican. Anyone wants to compare these two pieces can listen to the Haupango directed by dudamel it is excellent.

What knd of barrel is the 1 st clarinet using?where can I buy it ?
It is an adjustable Barrel/tenon and it it used for German built clarinets. The silver ring can be turned and this allows adjusting by telescope action, making the barrel longer or shorter. As you know most orchestras in Germany and Holland use a higher pitch (442) than US, UK or France (440)

conducting with elbows never fun to watch even if result is good. the baton is for a reason.
Are you an orchestral musician, Raymond, or just an expert with a digital music streamer? Copland's time signatures are often superposed with winds and brass sections playing to one while the strings play to another. My orchestra is performing this work in concert tomorrow and I can tell you from experience that the baton is simply not enough!! That theory is for Beethoven and Mozart. All real conductors conduct with their faces, arms, shoulders, elbows, dancing on heels, and above all - mental projection. You should sit among the second violins and try it sometime.
