Interesting fact Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finlands military airplane bosses have signed a treaty in 2023 to make the airforce a "Nordic airforce" instead of just country based.
So technically any of the northern countries got over 250+ modern fighter planes in their airforce now :). With a nice mix of F16, F35 and JAS 39's.

Russia vs. Ukraine, both Slavic, full of corruption, bad management, and training. Still, Ukraine is holding on because of help like training, munitions from other countries, and great fighters full of persistence. Finland has well-trained soldiers, a well-equipped defense force, great mentality, designed for defense, great tactics against attacking forces, a great environment to operate in, and with NATO, even stronger and better intelligence. Finland could handle Russian attacks alone.

I would like to add something I don't see mentioned often. We have a vast and recognised support network called Sotilaskoti. It's a volunteer organisation made up of women (mostly older, it isn't popular with the youth) assisting army personnel in training by making life more comfortable (food trucks, cafes and events) They are all fiercely loyal and willing to defend the country. Not all the women know how to fight but many of us are willing to do whatever we can to support. I remember grandma saying that Lotat, the more known volunteer organisation during the wars got taken down but Sotilaskoti remained. The name literally translates to "Soldierhome"

Also, one thing to remember: Russia does not always act rationally. They CAN decide to do a suicide, being convinced for ex that NATO will not help, or that they can take over in 3 days... Helsinki alone is a huge fortress, it would take months to years to invade it. When you can move troops and equipment underground, in nuclear bomb proof tunnels and caves... Just look at Mariupol steel factory and how much they had trouble with just that. Now, make that 20 times bigger and extend the tunnels well outside the whole city. And all of it is purpose built, whereas in Mariupol it was only half designed for war time.

The air force is relatively small in numbers. But the doctrine again is made against a larger enemy. The planes would be dispersed in roadside bases and would engage enemy planes from range, and then running. Causing casualties over time while saving their own numbers. Now that we are party of Nato our doctrine might change also into achieving total air superiority.

Think about that, in reserve are all men under 50 years, and officers under 60, So how many men are still ready to fight for our country, maybe million more? We can still shoot, and hide, most of us anyway. I was there, doing my military service when 17 .Wanted more from it, more pioneer things, those special ones, mostly demolition skills, for bridges and so, still got only basics of explosives training. But for me, there is only one enemy , and only way its coming is from east, russia.

The amount of "unofficial" reserves (those outside of active reserve and/or with Peace-time Exemptions AND almost entirety of female population) and how it is organized is something I personally kinda feel awe about. Almost every non-reservist male has some sort of "planned role" in war-time based on their civilian career. Much of the female workforce are also "earmarked" for certain roles and duties.
The amount of "active auxillaries" that (adm. just theoretically) could be mobilized without even stretching "mandatory service ages" for actual fighting population is staggering. And most of these WOULD take pride in their participation.

For many years, Sweden and Finland have had a military agreement in the event of war in either country. Sweden and Finland have also had joint military exercises, before both joined NATO. It is not true what is said that Sweden would only come after 12 hours to help Finland, unless Sweden had been in Finland after an hour or so with military personnel and then as soon as possible with warplanes.
Then as for Russia's constant threats against other countries, they do it because they are afraid and then Putin tries to scare and threaten, because they have no friends who can or want to help Russia.

The war in Ukraine has actually proved that many of the traditional defense logics still are ok. This makes me feel safe, or at least less concerned. It's always been a question if mathematics: how much can the aggressor lose in resources in relation to the theroretical geographical gain? The worst risk, as i see it, would be fast attacks againt strategical objects. Power plants, harbours, theHelsinki region etc. Fortunately a lot of our soldiers have been trained extensively in defending urban and strategic targets.

One thing i have seen people say about is that "why they don't make just new road and ignore existing ones".
The thing that is not mentioned often is how absolute fucking ass finnish forest is to traverse unless you can use roads, its not empty "farmland" that we have recently seen in Ukraine.
But rather its fairly dense forest with gift of natures tank traps from ice age in form of alot of rocks and boulders.
The things i detest most in my work is when i have to drive 30 ton excavator into forest is that maybe i can push down a small tree or two if they are in my way, but thats about it. After that i have to worry about excavator digging itself too deep into the soil so i have to lift myself up, then there is the rocky terrain which fucks up the tracks of excavator.
If anything is hostile to heavy machinery outside of vehicles used to cut said trees, its the forest.

thing about Russia using nukes against Finland which would be their only somewhat effective means of attack.
would be like if some hillbilly took a defective shotgun and as it fired, 3/4 of the pellets hits on his own face instead.
sure that would be devastating hit to us, but as you said the nuclear fallout from any of the viable targets would be way too big on Russian's own population centers.
and then there would be the added situation that now they had opened the floodgates by attacking Nato member country with a nukes.
so the political fallout might be even worse than the actual fallout from the nuke.

Before Finland join nato our biggest possible problem during possible war was supply. We depends lot of ships import stuff in Finland. Now that sea is secured because everyone around it are nato countries. War takes lot of material like we have seen in Ukraine and that material eventually win the wars. Ships are best and easiest way to bring that in. Everything else we can do it on our own.
Also Russians know tat we are not a threat. Im sure there would be lot of unhappy Russians if Putin decide to attack Finland. Russian people are mostly very likeable people, ofc there is some exceptions. However that fsb elite what hold power in Russia are thief gang, they are like mafia. Nobody like them, not even Russian average Joes. Russia is lot like nazi Germany was, there is not much what people can do against they goverment after situation is this bad. 2-3 days is for the fast reaction forces, so.. few hundred to couple of thousands, at most. In that scenario NATO can not empty out Baltic bases, which it would have to do to get any significant numbers in. It'll take couple of weeks to months to get foreign troops in such numbers that it matters. That is ok, we have enough to hold for months. Airforce can react in very short notice, specially since the formation of the Nordic Joint Airforce. And UK and Finland has a defence pact, UK would have to join in ASAP, not just send their NATO "quota".

I would definitely defend my country. I'm so glad to have been born in Finland. Finns like to complain that Finland "sucks" etc., but they have not experienced life in another country and how "bad" it could actually be. We have things very good here.

I'm much more pessimistic than most concerning this content. Sure, we can field huge reserves and hold on, with NATO support even longer. But, if Russia decides to go full scale, it will be rough and the country decimated. Even still, whatever gets lost we as a nation are gonna just take it on the chin like we did with Karjala.

In the US the willingness to protect their homeland is less than 5%, which is just crazy, and this even in the case if the country itself was under attack. Such massive mistrust in their own government and divisions in their politics. I do hope USA stays in NATO and pray that Donald Trump does not get re-elected.

I agree with the others - it makes no sense to attack Russia. From what I hear, Finns don't even want the land back they had to cede to Russia (Karelia). Full of Russians and economically a bottomless pit trying to make it inhabitable in Western sense of the word. German reunification was a financial drain which can be felt still today. Getting Karelia back would be ten times worse, and Finnish economy is tiny compared to Germany.

And sweden might have worlds 3rd strongest airforce in the world. Atleast its in top 5. If you didnt know there was an swedish air force volunteers with swedens planes defending northern Finland in winterwar (F 19 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flying_Regiment_19,_Finnish_Air_Force ). Not so much but still more than 10% of Finlands planes used in that war. In my opinion pretty important help to not to let soviets bomb everything freely with no risk of losing planes..
