The Lab is our weekly post-work shuffle where we bring you the best American and international DJs live from the heart of Hollywood. This Friday we have British electro pop darling Little Boots dropping by to dish out a DJ set on the launch date of her third album.
Since going solo in 2009, the hugely talented Little Boots has been a force in the electro-pop crossover scene. Her first single 'Stuck on Repeat' made an immediate star out of the Blackpool-born songwriter/DJ, and with three albums, a slew of high profile festival appearances, and a Mixmag cover in the bag, she's showing no signs of slowing.
This Friday is also the release date of her new album 'Working Girl', which is out on Dim Mak.

its about the music the groove, the skill ofnthe deejay and the mood u create..
thats deejaying.. thats what people come to see theybcome to see A deejay who knows how to get the crowd in a mood to groove as one people.... no matter ur color or age or gender.. just GET DOWN!! if i as a deejay can get that then i have done my job... its not about noveltys or whatever..
its about the groove u make and the vibe and the mood as a deejay u control the crowd. the mood and the groove u can either mess that up or make it hot! its up to you... so u better know what ur doing..

What computer, and why would she have one hooked up to this setup anyway? CDJ-2000 Nexus, Rekordboxed USB's and you have more info on that built-in 7'' screen than you need for a set like this.

I think they broke up like a year or so before her first solo album. She lives in LA now and is working with lots of great underground DJs along with continuing her own music career

Wow it's 2022 now and I've just found Little Boots again I remember her making music in her bedroom at he parents house. That must have been 14 years ago, I'm glad she's still pumping out the tunes still.
lol I bought a set of decks from a friend about 20 years ago and thought I was going to be the next Carl Cox. Little did I know I couldn't mix for shit and just couldn't get the hang of it, so I respect tidy mixes like this. And I'll always love my tunes no matter what!

I don't mind the little mess ups. 1. it shows she is actually mixing. 2. The song selection is very very good. 3. I feel like these young dj's are really doing a great job of playing old school house and disco!

Well, I wouldn't call her young DJ necessarily. She's well-known 32 year old solo artist, first of all. She released three albums (since 2009) and had few hits. And was member of Dead Disco before that. And I'm sure she (as UK artist) is very aware of UK dance culture of 90s and 2000s. Probably she's DJ-ing only occasionally. And mess-ups are not a big deal, I agree. Those who really DJ-ing, mess up.
DJs used to have to be proficient before they could play events like this. She is there because she has a certain look / is a small time celebrity.

Girlfriend gave you Frankie Knuckles, Paradise Garage Realness, a mild vibe of DC gospel house (Sam the Man Burns) the way she fucked with the mix, Sylvester, Soul Sister in New Orleans (that soul-love George Benson vibe), the Shelter, '90's NYC mixtape-off-the-street transitions ("DJ MikeMike," helllloooo?!), the Roxy, Honey Dijon afterhours, Lady Kier-ish-ness, 1990's Paris runway soundtracks (I'm pretty sure YSL used two of the tracks she dropped back in the day), Red Zone (Morales), just a soupcant of New Jerseyness, London's-garage-sound-without-annoying-Americans, MAW, Little Louis Vega's "Ride on the Rhythm"-ness (the way she dropped her piano riff so nicely at the end boo,!) a little Armand, a little Armando, and ALL that. This is a gooooood set for sure. The track selection really 'works'.... it flows and is verrrrrrry listenable!!
The start was nice and it grows and grows from there.... I can't often say that for an entire set these days... Usually there is some trash but on this one no there's not!!

I've listened to this set a few times, but never appreciated how much the deep prog sounds pervade this set with the subtle mixing , its such fun mix! So rare to hear this sound with vocals too... reminds me of a disco version of early Norman Cook ^^

Mine's not, her clapping and the light meters on the DDJ closeup camera shots all flash in time with the beat as well. Could be your internet connection. I've seen a dozen of these now and not noticed any issues

The only value they have is what people are ready to pay for them.
I would have taken gold or silver (or something else), if we speak about being paid in non-currency things.

As I felt my spirit lifting at the 24:00 mark of this mix, I was really shocked to see that this was recorded from the penthouse of The CNN building in Hollywood!! Because I see the brown building I work in, 6464 Sunset, right over her shoulder!!! I'm like AHHH! I'm just a block away while their boogyin down over there!!! LOL!!!
