This film, made at the very beginning of WWII, stands out as one of the best of the genre, with Rex Harrison as, essentially, 007. It's well written and nicely paced, with superb casting. The addition of Charters and Caldicott -- rugby-obsessed characters featured in other British films -- provides some measured comic relief and ultimately a major role in the spy caper. Excellent story, direction and acting, and one of my favorite films. Highly recommended.
Europe was in terror when this movie was filmed and Germany war machine devastated all armed forces sent against them. I can't imagine how realistic and frightening this screenplay was for people in the cinemas.
My dad was lucky, he was an engineer and worked secretly on developing jet engines for the US military, and they were still working on them when the war ended. In late 43, when they needed more infantry, he was sent to the Navy in Panama to guard the canal. He told stories about watching from the shore and seeing Allied ships being sunk by U boats. Your mum and all those people were tough. Churchill may have been the greatest figure of the 20th century. Best wishes.
A really fantastic movie. Seeing Paul Henried as a bad guy was certainly different from his other roles, notably as the international patriot in "Casablanca". A young Rex Harrison was excellent posing as German officer. I've never seen this b/w classic movie, but I totally enjoyed it from the beginning to the end! Thanks for the upload! 🎦
Paul Henreid was a German Jew who wanted to continue to act in his country. He went to Goebbels personally to plead his case. Goebbels told him if he did not leave Germany, he'd be arrested. Luckily, he got out in time.

The similarities between this film and ‘The Lady Vanishes’ go beyond the three primary actors of Lockwood, Radford, and Wayne, as well as the screenplay of both movies being written by Sidney Gilliatt & Frank Launder. Note the use of miniature sets - both movies open with the exact same shot: A zoom in on a miniature bldg which fades to a zoom in through the window of an actual sound stage set. One thing that’s always bothered me about this movie is the curious omission of Radford & Wayne from the very last scene where all our heroes have made it across the tram to safety. Charters & Caldicot are suddenly nowhere to be seen. An unfortunate gap in continuity at this key moment.
Thanks for posting this, Lance. I saw it one night, late in the evening, and have been trying to find it again. As others have said, they don't make 'em like this anymore. Too much work!
It's good to see Wayne, Radford, and Lockwood again in this film after they first appeared seven years earlier in Hitchcocks; The Lady Vanishes ( 1933).
They are a humorous addition to many other British films too. I'm sure I've seen them together in at least 3 or 4 others as well, usually as team sports fans as well. Their parts are usually not as long as here, having less lines and being a smaller part of the story, essentially just being there for comic relief. So this film has the longest parts for them that I've seen. I really enjoyed the nice long parts they played here.
I counted at least 23... Did you also notice that Rex Harrison's handgun at 1:30:18 is different from the 6-bullet revolver that he is shooting with in the following scenes? And, another point, Gestapo and SS/SD did not usually have revolvers as side arms - they used the Walther PPK and Mauser 1934 pocket pistol. Oh, and I might as well mention that Charters and Caldicott seemed to be carrying British rifles which they ostensibly stole from the two German guards. At first, I was not convinced that the German army would have been using those. Upon closer examination of the rifle bolts and sights, etc., I now conclude that these are German carbines.

@@Rob-yk1jw Yes. That is true of many of the WW2 films! That is very surprising when you think about it! Public morale was a real concern at the time, so films were made to help keep morale up, which wasn't easy to do when English cities were being carpet bombed, and it seemed like the British Commonwealth was alone in fighting Hitler for so long! Without help from the other Commonwealth Countries the British would have been doomed, and most of us would be speaking German today.

Margaret is always beautiful and a great actor, and Wayne and Radford are always so funny. I've seen Radford and Wayne together in at least 3 other films, but this is my favorite performance by them, because it's the longest one I've seen. They usually only have very short blurbs, with only a few lines each. They're usually exactly the same people too, team sports fans who squabble together about it. The English really knew how to lighten up a film with comic relief. It was intelligent comedy that didn't insult the audience. They used odd characters that were almost believable. Many of that type of people were used over and over in short roles where their character was pretty much the same, and it was like seeing an old friend, after not seeing them for several years. They would give you a tiny burst of joy! Some went on to become quite famous for their characters in those small roles, so the roles eventually got longer and the parts got more important. One actress that comes to mind for that is a Kathleen Something, who almost always played a dumb woman with a loud voice in her earlier roles. She played a dumb middle aged servant, or wife, or shopkeeper type role, with dark hair and a generally likeable personality. She is one of those whose roles became longer and more important, so the dumbness was usually fazed out in the later roles, at least partially. She ended up starring or costarring in quite a few movies. I'm sure that people who have seen a lot of old British movies will know her when they see her, even if my poor description doesn't describe her very well.
Won't admit how many times I have seen it. LOL. Even when you know what is going to happen, the level of tension is still there. Hallmark of a great movie.

I am sick to death of hearing this complaint! There were always just as many bad movies, you just don't remember them. And there are many good movies now. I can't stand any type of formula, and there have been many of them over the years. I dislike almost all cowboy films, noirs, and cop and crime movies. Many American comedies are as stupid as can be with their shallow slapstick humor. Comic book superheroes are all the rage now, but they are as stupid as it gets! Action movies of any kind turn me right off. They bore me to tears. Action and CGI are both used to fill up space when the movie doesn't have anything truly important to say. I guess I prefer good dramas, good comedies, and good mysteries, including good time travel shows. The thing is that among all of those genres there are many bad ones, as there always have been. After that list of things I don't like, and it's only a partial list, a person might think there is nothing I do like. I don't even go to theatres, and I haven't since about 1992 or so, yet I can list many good movies I've seen since then. Some were award winners and some were not. I saw some of them on a streaming app that's free, called TUBI. You can get it from Google Play. I would say to start with Goya's Ghost, Princess Carriboo, The Crying Game, and Citizen X with Stephen Rea and Donald Sullivan (not Comrade X.) But there are many more very good ones and even a few more great ones on there, among the usual garbage. That is just one streaming service. I'm not going to list every film I've liked a lot. There are too many, and not everyone's taste is the same, but they are there if only you open your mind a little, and let go of that negativity that so many older people have embraced so strongly! The world is a worse place by far, and the movies do reflect that, especially the horrible slide to the right wing that has gotten even worse since Trump began spewing nothing but hatred everywhere. But the constant repetition here of the obviously false claim that there are no more good movies is only making it worse! When it has already been said at least 4 or 5 times among 50 comments, why say it again?! That is most definately NOT helping. Why not instead tell people the names of GOOD movies here that they can watch?! That is SO VERY MUCH more helpful, and it will make you feel so much better than just griping will ! ! !
absolutely lovely film good propanganda for what was coming. Margaret Lockwood such a lovely actress and Rex Harrison really good and the two engiish gentlemen really a laugh, nice film a classic!

Amazing film with current looking subject for this film to com out in 1940. On March 15, 1939, Nazi Germany invaded and occupied the Czech provinces of Bohemia and Moravia in the rump Czecho-Slovak state, in flagrant violation of the Munich Pact.
Always remember this film for the exchange between Basil Radford and Naunton Wayne on the subject of Mein Kampf: Radford: "I understand they give [Mein Kampf] to newly married couples." Wayne: "Oh, I don't think it's that kind of a book, old man."
1997-2010 🎉 I lived 400m from the French border in Switzerland ~ the Café on the French side had WW II photos on its wall, of the Nazis guarding the border below its steps! And the roads were blocked by those huge welded "jacks" made from lengths of railroad ties.

But there are many more very good ones and even a few more great ones on there, among the usual garbage.
I was waiting for Sherlock Holmes to pop in but clearly these brave people did not need him. ✌️ #FightBullies
absolutely lovely film good propanganda for what was coming. Margaret Lockwood such a lovely actress and Rex Harrison really good and the two engiish gentlemen really a laugh, nice film a classic!
I thought the two British men & their humor was kind of out of place. It was like a plot within the main plot, and didn’t add much to the story.
Unfortunately she was captured because she just had to pack a bag…
Certainly fun to watch!
Brilliant stuff and all the good German's would enjoy this film too.
Please, please, please! When "They" come for you; Do not go back to pack some things you might need. Just go! Flee while you can still leave with your life. Do not go and pack what you think you might need. Just leave with your life. God will provide the rest! Just leave, leave, leave!
Yes, it was upsetting she wasted time as if going on holiday. I found that very disturbing. 😠😣😖
The two English gentlemen on the train were also in The Lady Vanishes.
Rex reloaded his pistol fast in the gun fight at the end.
Dang lucky the pursuit car got a flat! The soldier changed the tire in 2 minutes! Adds mightily to the suspense! Cool movie!

- ‘…traitor?’
- ‘…hardly, he played for the Gentlemen.’
- ‘…only once!’
1:30:00 - count his shots - his gun change from luger to revolver but still more than either can hold.
Great movie thank you.
Excellent!
Amazing film with current looking subject for this film to com out in 1940. On March 15, 1939, Nazi Germany invaded and occupied the Czech provinces of Bohemia and Moravia in the rump Czecho-Slovak state, in flagrant violation of the Munich Pact.
Quite the revolver, must have shot 50+ times without reloading. 🤓
Yeah, I noticed that
Preceding the war on the night of 3 Sept 1939??Germany invaded Poland on 1 Sept 1939...did this film accidently predict the start of WW2?
The director did
Almost everybody new...
Almost every body KNEW....where you from? Fetishes? Sex? Gender?
There was no conjecture on 'if' a war started' it was 'when will it start'.
Wow! How many bullets were in those pistols at the end??? 😂
Guns are our friends
They saved the day
1:33:38 Even 25 shot revolvers run out of ammunition eventually.
❤❤ ICH LIEBE DIESE FILME ACH, MEIN DAMEN UND HERREN
Always remember this film for the exchange between Basil Radford and Naunton Wayne on the subject of Mein Kampf:
Radford: "I understand they give [Mein Kampf] to newly married couples."
Wayne: "Oh, I don't think it's that kind of a book, old man."
1997-2010 🎉 I lived 400m from the French border in Switzerland ~ the Café on the French side had WW II photos on its wall, of the Nazis guarding the border below its steps! And the roads were blocked by those huge welded "jacks" made from lengths of railroad ties.
excellent
Excellent
This is a very entertaining movie, esp as made before the US entered the war.
USA was attacked by Japan. And Germany declared war on USA. So the USA did not enter the war. They were dragged into it
Quite late USA Enter the war. Shame on USA
1940 😮😮😮😮😮 how bold !
Ahhhhhhh. Film starts with a madman. Banging tables. The mass murderer.
😂 the Porter asked if they wanted tea substitute or coffee substitute!

He's daughter didn't leave at once - 😂
Not a bad movie. Probably a more effective novella. But very enjoyable nevertheless.
How many bullets?
25...😅
I took the night train to Moscow. Interesting trip
The man the legend Victor Lazlo 9:19
EXCELENTE.
3:02 sounds convincingly like Hitler. Was this nicked from original footage or just dubbed?
