2024 BMW M2 First Drive Review: Small But Frighteningly Potent
The 2024 BMW M2 may be the most junior member of the M family, but it's certainly not to be underestimated. With the same twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six as the M3 and M4 under the hood, just detuned by 20 horsepower to 453 hp, this compact coupe packs a serious punch. We recently had the chance to experience its ferocious acceleration and agile handling on theroads outside of BMW's Spartanburg plant in South Carolina.
Right off the bat, the M2 impresses with its straight-line performance. Mash the accelerator and this little coupe simply takes off, the turbo six delivering relentless thrust accompanied by a deep baritone growl from the quad exhaust pipes. The standard six-speed manual is an absolute joy, with short, precise throws and a light but progressive clutch.
BMW claims 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds with this gearbox, but it feels even quicker than that. The eight-speed automatic is no slouch either in terms of acceleration, but we'd opt for the manual every time for maximum driving engagement.
But pure speed is only part of the M2's appeal. This car is just an absolute riot to throw into corners, feeling compact, tossable, and eager to change direction. The steering is direct and beautifully weighted, the front end bites tenaciously, and you can easily control the attitude of the rear with your right foot. BMW's electronic assists enhance stability and traction without dulling the experience. With its rigid chassis and meticulously tuned suspension, the M2 carves up a twisting mountain road with incredible precision and poise.
Inside, the cockpit environment is purposeful and driver-focused, with heavily bolstered sport seats, a thick M Sport steering wheel, and BMW's latest iDrive 8 infotainment system. The large curved display incorporates both the digital instrument panel and central touchscreen seamlessly. Material quality is excellent throughout the compact cabin, though rear seat space is predictably tight.
Our test car was fitted with the $9,900 Carbon Package, adding carbon fiber interior and exterior trim pieces, a carbon fiber roof, and ultra-aggressive carbon bucket seats. The seats look fantastic but their protruding side bolsters may make ingress/egress a challenge for larger occupants.
Downsides? Well, the M2's extroverted styling won't be for everyone, the ride can feel rather firm on rougher roads, and gas mileage suffers due to the big engine's thirst. But for driving enthusiasts seeking an unapologetically raw and thrilling sports coupe experience, the 2024 BMW M2 absolutely delivers.
With its potent powerplant, tenacious dynamics, and impressive value proposition relative to the pricier M3/M4, the M2 reminds us that sometimes, good things really do come in small packages. It's a car that will put a huge grin on your face every time you turn the key.
