If you're talking about strength of will, then there's no greater "hero" than the Doom Slayer. His will is unyielding to a fault. But I'm not sure that he would fit on this list.
"A hero is someone who is concerned about other people's well being, and will go out of his or her way to help them, even if there is no chance of a reward. That person who helps others simply because it should or must be done, and because it is the right thing to do, is indeed without a doubt, a real superhero.” - Stan Lee (1922 - 2018)
With the Yakuza hurting a dog thing, I like to think he goes by a similar philosophy to late doctor of journalism (and fellow morally nuanced fella) Hunter Thompson: "Only a punk beats his wife and dog."
I'd argue that Samus' best moment of heroism is in Metroid Prime 2. Samus' mission is to find a Galactic Federation platoon that went missing on the Rogue Planet Aether. When Samus arrives she quickly discovers that the platoon was wiped out, even recovering video evidence. At that point, Samus could have gone back to her ship intended to leave, her job's over. However, after viewing the video, Samus kneels down to close the eye of one of the dead troopers and then continues onward to avenger their deaths. Shortly thereafter Samus meets U-Mos, the last active Luminoth, the native species of Aether. At first Samus keeps her Arm Cannon trained on U-Mos just in case, but once Samus hears of the Luminoth's plight, she immediately lowers her Arm Cannon and agrees to help. Once Samus knew what was going on she immediately decided to help the Luminoth stop the Ing, even though Samus wasn't going to get paid for it afterwards. Samus didn't become a warrior for fame, fortune or power. Her primary motivator was to protect people considering the trauma she suffered as a child. She continually does the right thing solely because it's the right thing to do, despite what she's lost and that she continually loses people close to her. If she doesn't do it, who will?
To be fair, her ship was in repair mode, there was no guarantee it could make it back to space with the permanent storm still raging as the planet is literally split between 2 realities, and even if those weren't factors - some jackasses stole her weapons. AGAIN. That couldn't stand.
Not to mention that final scene when she returned the last of Aether's light. All of the hibernating Luminoth awaken, and almost immediately start thanking Samus for saving them and their planet. And what does Samus do? She doesn't say a word and simply goes back to her ship, leaving the Luminoth with a simple wave. Not once did she take the time to bask in the well-deserved praise being heaped on her.

Happy to see Phoenix and Kiryu here! I've also just started Path of Radiance, so I'm looking forward to seeing Ike's heroism firsthand. One character I always think about when it comes to the hero archetype is Adol Christin from Ys. He's a pretty Link-like character in that he's a primarily silent protagonist who gets roped into and resolves a bunch of unrelated incidents. The main difference is that he's one guy as opposed to a bunch of reincarnations, which means he has the absolute WORST luck when it comes to getting shipwrecked and being pulled into adventures that determine the fate of the world.
Kiryu's line " I've never killed anyone" is actually a bit of a mistranslation. I read somewhere that what he's really saying is more akin to "I've never murdered someone", as in he's never premeditated, or plotted, somebody's death. Which fits better with that scene where he blatantly used a guy as a shield from a hail of gunfire and all those likely casualties from his beatings. He didn't plan any of deaths, it all happened within the heat of battle.
Gonna shout out Estelle Bright from Trails in the Sky. Everyone literally describes her as bright as the sun and it's obvious why. She may be snarky and very eager to whack people with her big stick, but her heart of gold shines so bright that she rehabilitates TWO former assassins, jaded from their respective childhoods and out to kill whoever gets in the way of their goal, and makes them her family.
Damn, it's been a while since you've did a full countdown, and no, that movie edition of your top 50 favorite games doesn't count, and it's a remake of your very first countdown, not bad. Reminds of when James A. Janise remade his original Kill Counts of the Friday the 13th franchise, since it was how his channel got started while the new game was fresh in people's minds and wasn't shut down due to an ongoing lawsuit between people who made the films
Honestly, I give him more credit for being the only normal person in the weird world of DMC. Think about this. He’s understandably freaked out when he learns that not only does he have a living father, but that his father and his uncle are constantly fighting. He has a legitimate inferiority complex, (likely a shared trait from his dad), that’s been kind of memed to death. He hates Nico’s smoking. And strangest of all, he actually has a stable love life. He might not look it or act like it at times, specifically when he enters Devil Trigger, but he’s literally the most normal and human out any of the main protagonists in Devil May Cry. So yeah. I think he deserved a spot on the list.
God, what a blast from the past. Wasn't my first list I saw of yours, but it was one of them, and even if it's uh... not aged the best I still have fond memories of it. This channel's been one my favorites for years, and were it not for those early countdowns I don't know if I would have found it. And damn, what a revival, easily one of my favorite vids in a while. And you know what... when it comes to that number 1, I'm still happy to see him come back. I can't put my finger on exactly why; maybe it's just because of what he represents, on top of how close his series is to my heart, but Link is my favorite fictional character of all time, without a doubt. I can't think of a single character, in any medium, not just video games, who's more deserving of the title of a true hero.
I think it is pretty apt to call Link the true spirit of heroism, all things considered. Now that makes me think of Kirby's Sword hat being Link's hat. It fits not just as a tribute to the character, but also for Kirby's own heroism.
One I gotta shout out for this list is Joker from Persona 5. The dude puts himself through the worst of it for the sake of no one’s benefit except his own. Being arrested multiple times, putting his own life, both physically & in society on the line for the sake of helping innocent people. And he does it all while explicitly never taking any credit for it. He sacrificed EVERYTHING, for the sake of the people & the future. Even as a silent protag, the dude’s actions are freaking insane in terms of how heroic he ended up becoming among protags.
10: Pit (Kid Icarus) 9: Liu Kang (Mortal Kombat) 8: Sonic the Hedgehog 7: Ratchet (Ratchet and Clank) 6: Shantae 5: Link (Legend of Zelda) 4: Dante (Devil May Cry) 3: Samus (Metroid) 2: Snake (Metal Gear) 1: Zero (Mega Man X)
I think a lot of these are good examples of video game heroes especially the likes of Shephard, Pit & Snake. I think three great examples of defining a hero are Shulk from Xenoblade, Rex from Xenoblade 2 & Zero from the Mega Man series. Zero was created by Wily to be the ultimate killing machine but throughout the X & Zero series he goes in the opposite direction & becomes what Mega Man & Mega Man X were design for.
I'm always inspired by heroes, especially in video games. There is just something about helping everyone I can that resonates with me. As for this list, I'd have to agree with all of them as much as I'd like to see Zack Fair or Sly Cooper, but you did mention them.
That was a good 53:00 minutes to spend on a long time favorite UA-camrs opinions. I'm looking forward to see more remakes to see how your work had evolved. And yea your particular style is very refreshing. Obscure topics with flavor like weapons months really stick out as exceptional content
This list was very impressive and each story and character present really deserves to be our top hero. And in a way, I believe it all comes down to not only what kind of hero we like but what kind of hero we really want to be. By the way, I love your representation in the MHA world!

It's an oft-repeated theme with creators that they hate the first videos they've made. And honestly, I think that's a short-sighted approach. Sure, your first creation is not going to be your best. But that's the point. You had the courage to step out anyway and show what you created to the world, even if it was flawed. And you can also do what Oscar has clearly done, and go back to his previous videos, and learn from them, improving on what started him out. Short version, I'm glad you decided to do this.
I know they can be really taxing and difficult to make but your Top 10s are some the best quality content I've seen on UA-cam. The algorithm tried to keep them from me but I run these back all the time. Good work as always man
I know Sora is the main hero, but I think Aqua also qualifies here. She gave herself up to the dark realm to save Terra, and she’s clearly the most innocent of the BBS trio
28:37 Samus: CAN YOU FEEL IT, FEEL IT DUDE, THAT IS THE POWER OF THE WARRIOR NATION, THAT POWER IS WITH YOU MOTHER BRAIN, SO POWER UP THE ROCKET FUEL LOAD WITH THE WORDS, FEEL THE POWER INSIDE AND COME FACE THE ULTIMATE CHALLENGE, AHH.
2 more characters that qualify as true heroes in my book are Aloy from the Horizon series and Jin Sakai from Ghost of Tsushima. The latter may be a bit debatable, but the sole reason Jin chose to violate the samurai code is because of how outdated it is. It makes you super predictable, and it’s especially terrible when there are hostages. That code is one of the main reasons Tsushima suffered so many losses. Jin chose innocent lives over his own reputation, and that makes him a true hero in my book. The fact that the shogun branded him as a traitor for that just shows how biased and egocentric politicians were back then.
What the fuck?! Where is Bayonetta?! Which of your candidates participated in the war? Who killed God ?" Twice?! Who literally went to Hell and came back with the soul of a best friend?! Who saved the trinity of worlds?! Bayonetta!!!
My personal favorite video game heroes in no particular order Sora from Kingdom Hearts Zidane from Final Fantasy 9 Takayuki Yagami from the Judgment games Lloyd Irving from Tales of Symphonia Crash Bandicoot Jak from Jak and Daxter Rean Schwarzer from The Legend of Heroes Trails of Cold Steel Spyro The Dragon Joker from Persona 5
"[Phoenix] made it right by his defendant by adopting his daughter while he was in jail" Trucy's father didn't go to jail though. He made himself disappear.
I really can't and do not like to imagine myself as main characters. I've tried sometimes, but never can unless the character is explicitly me (like "The Player" in Doki Doki Literature Club or that spirit in Dragon Ball FigterZ). I like to see myself as an otherworthly helper for the main characters. So this list feels like a list of people who would turn to me (and everyone else here) and say "Thank you for helping us. Thank you for playing our game".
Phoenix Wright is one of the Heroes in Video games who inspired me every game. The truth is all that matters Even him winning even against that Sociopath Matt Engarde, He gave me the ability to Turn things around thanks to his way of thinking that Mia taught him In a way, He taught me what Mia taught him
"Kiryu has never killed anyone." 'Kiryu blows up an attack Helicopter.' Angriest Pat: That man definitely isn't dead. (I forget the exact thing Pat said.)
Honorable mentions from me: Adol Christin (YS) Artyom (Metro) Ren Amamiya/Akira Kurusu (Persona) Estelle Bright (Trails) Luke fon Fabre (Tales of the Abyss)
Technically, Kiryu doesn't intentionally kill The idea that "Kiryu never killed anybody" is more like Kiryu has never Committed Premeditated Murder, all deaths by his hands are simply unintentional
Time and time again Oscar keeps pulling out quality videos like this. Such a vague topic and yet he gets his reasons for why they belong up here (with his personal preferences of course). Heck, if you ask me you're a real hero for having Sora on this list and yet not defaulting to "Kingdom Hearts makes no sense because blah blah blah..." Joshscorcher (good guy that he is) tends to lean on that joke/criticism WAY too much for my liking (nobody point that guy to BlazeBlue or Dr. Who). My ranting aside, I have to say this list is great. I may have heard about most of these heroes before, but you still make them sound like they're worth checking out... if I ever have time to get into Metroid or Yakuza
Of course Link is number. He is the hero and he will go out of his way to aid others no matter what incarnation he is in at the time. There is giving your and then there is giving your eternity for others. Now if only the Heroes on this list can have one epic team up. Now that would blow the Avengers out of the water.
Link may be reincarnated because of a curse by Denise but the fact remains that he still actively chooses the call to arms. Hyrule has plenty of capable warriors so why should he bother? And yet he goes through with adventuring anyway.
Personal Honorable Mentions: Sonic (Sonic the Hedgehog) Ragna the Bloodedge (Blazblue) Dust (Dust and Elysian Tail) Makoto Yuuki (Persona 3) Sol Badguy and Ky Kiske (Guilty Gear)
Will there ever be a list of anti-heroes? Protagonists who aren't necessarily good people, but who we find ourselves compelled by to see how they'll achieve their goals, enjoy their charisma/cunning or how they'll eventually face retribution or redemptlon for what they've done. Characters like: Kain (Legacy of Kain), Nathen Drake, Scorpion, Lara Croft, Bayonetta, Joel, Majima, and maybe point and click characters like Sam & Max, April Ryan, Bigby, and Guybrush whose methods are a little morally questionable, would be perfect for the list.
Because of entry number 6. Spoiler warning. . . . . Kazuma Kiryu's no attacking women rule has gameplay ramifications in Yakuza 7 (Yakuza : Like a Dragon). There's a boss fight against him where, if you bring female party members, he will not attack them! Ever! Make sure one's a skilled idol for healing, and the fight is quite a bit easier.
It's not video game, but I have a hero that brings a very important question : does a hero have to be brave ? Enters Donald Doyle, acting general of the Federal Army of Chorus, from Red vs Blue. This guy is a coward, through and through, and very much aware of it ! the kind of guy who would scream to his troops "lay suppressive fire, I need to get out of here !", the kind of guy who, upon finding the key to active a genocide weapon and being held at gunpoint by the enemy, throws it one way and runs the other... And I've taken him as the golden standard for heroism, why ? Let's go step by step. Due to a technicality, now that he touched the key first, the weapon can't be used until he's dead, so the bad guy WILL attempt to kill him. Knowing this, the good guys plan an ambush : draw the enemy into the capital city and detonate its nuclear plant to kill as many of them as possible. This would allow the hopeless peasants with guns to remove the equipement and training disadvantage they suffer against the mercenaries by virtue of sheer numerical advantage. As the plan goes awry and Doyle is stalked upon alongside the other commanders and best fighters of his faction, he makes his first sacrifice : jumps on a bike and runs in front of the enemy, taunting them to follow. He eventually looses them... Then he hear over the radio that the sabotage team is not responding, and he makes a second choice : despite many volonteering and/or trying to discourage him, he argues that he can get there faster than anyone and knows the procedure to overload the reactor. He intructs everyone to leave the city, as planned, as the fuse will be deliberately short... Upon starting to overload the reactor, he's caught off guard by a merc, panic-unloads his pistol into the wall... And the guy in front of said wall. But the control panel is totaled. And he notices a demolition charge on the merc's belt. He takes it, sneaks to the core as he's surrounded by closing patrols, sets the timer and shoots, all the while everyone and their mom tell him to reconsider and get himself out of here ! As he gets surrounded by, for all account and purposes, an execution squad, he calmly converses with them, distracting them from the bomb until the last few seconds, and gives a motivational speech to his fleeing allies... And dies in the explosion alongside most of the enemy's numbers. Donald Doyle may run from combat, might faint if held at gunpoint, but he never ran from his responsibilities !! Times and times again he could have let someone else do it, dumped his charge onto anyone's shoulders and wash his hands of it all. He never did ! With an entire army to command he could have promoted any soldier to replace him. He could have let his escort handle the enemy, with maybe a few wounded. He literally had 5-10 people that would have jumped at the opportunity to replace him going to the plant. With how events turned out, he could've called the whole thing a defeat and skitadeled out of there to cut their loses. But when he saw that detonator on the ground, he picked it up and knew what to do with it...
I mean for Link at least to start with in all timelines yes he gets the triforce of courage because he is the person most suited for it and in the very early games he doesn't have the triforce and is just running off that same will of sure I will fight an army by myself or sure I fight a god to save someone. hell the greatest power of the said piece of the triforce is even just take the word Imposable and edit it out of your dictionary sure you can not be strong enough or not clever enough or not charismatic enough to get what is needed to succeed but there is a way. Hell Breath of the wild shows it best just how far Link is willing to go if needed where he almost breaks the upgraded form of the personal blade of goddess and got to the point where just standing up was almost beyond him and he was still willing to try and force himself to keep going and only falls once he knows the person he is protecting is safe

My favorite hero is well yourself the player when you think about it we make the decisions so in a way we are our own heroes & villains
What the fuck?! Where is Bayonetta?! Which of your candidates participated in the war? Who killed God ?" Twice?! Who literally went to Hell and came back with the soul of a best friend?! Who saved the trinity of worlds?!
Bayonetta!!!
"Phoenix Wright is one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet" *laughs in Apollo Justice*
I am annoyed that most Fire Emblem classes end on a mount
On a different note, Ike may be buff but Jonathan Jostar goes from buff to a brick wall
My personal favorite video game heroes in no particular order
Sora from Kingdom Hearts
Zidane from Final Fantasy 9
Takayuki Yagami from the Judgment games
Lloyd Irving from Tales of Symphonia
Crash Bandicoot
Jak from Jak and Daxter
Rean Schwarzer from The Legend of Heroes Trails of Cold Steel
Spyro The Dragon
Joker from Persona 5
"[Phoenix] made it right by his defendant by adopting his daughter while he was in jail"
Trucy's father didn't go to jail though. He made himself disappear.
Great list, Oscar, but you tasked me with an important duty. 💥
Next time:
~Smash it up, burn it down~
~Tearing up the underground~
~You wanna live like a super villain~
Phoenix Wright is one of the Heroes in Video games who inspired me every game.
The truth is all that matters
Even him winning even against that Sociopath Matt Engarde, He gave me the ability to Turn things around thanks to his way of thinking that Mia taught him
In a way, He taught me what Mia taught him
"Kiryu has never killed anyone."
'Kiryu blows up an attack Helicopter.'
Angriest Pat: That man definitely isn't dead. (I forget the exact thing Pat said.)
Same with sonic he didn't need to fight eggman but he did because he cares about people
Cecil is probably my favorite final fantasy character whenever I use a absol on my team in Pokémon I almost always name it cecil if it’s a boy
Honorable mentions from me:
Adol Christin (YS)
Artyom (Metro)
Ren Amamiya/Akira Kurusu (Persona)
Estelle Bright (Trails)
Luke fon Fabre (Tales of the Abyss)
Looking forward to these remastered lists.
Quite the heroic list indeed.
Happy anniversary.
This is amazing! Always love your videos!
Hm… have you done a movie on redeemed characters?
Ike has still greatly carried my mobile Fire Emblem Heroes team to this day, power creep and all.
Technically, Kiryu doesn't intentionally kill
The idea that "Kiryu never killed anybody" is more like
Kiryu has never Committed Premeditated Murder, all deaths by his hands are simply unintentional
To be fair, most if not all of those battles were self defense.
49:42 dude I LOVE fluffy
40:06
Trouble with the trolley, eh?
38:12 Reminds me of a certain blue-haired Joestar, honestly.
Of course Link is number. He is the hero and he will go out of his way to aid others no matter what incarnation he is in at the time. There is giving your and then there is giving your eternity for others.
Now if only the Heroes on this list can have one epic team up. Now that would blow the Avengers out of the water.
I want Infamous to bring Cole Back!
VILLAINS!!!
VILLAINS!!!!
VILLAINS!!!!!
VILLAINS!!!!!!!
Gannondorf one question: Do you have orange slices?
I was expecting Ichiban then Kiryu because Ichiban want be a hero and he is a true hero.
Link may be reincarnated because of a curse by Denise but the fact remains that he still actively chooses the call to arms. Hyrule has plenty of capable warriors so why should he bother? And yet he goes through with adventuring anyway.
Hey where can I go to make countdown suggestions? I had a really good one and it’s bouncin’ around the ol’ noggin.
This was a good remake.
Yakuza Goon: *gets brutally beaten up by Kazuma Kiryu*
The Yakuza Fandom: Walk it off! 😋
Why not use Ace Attorney Trilogy footage from PC or PS4? The iPad version looks bad.
low key triggered you even play the Paris lvl music and tease it with sly on the balcony but still a good choice
Control ending ain't a sacrifice, it's an ascension.
While I disagree with Pit and Sora having low intelligence, I'm glad the two of them as well as Cecil being on this list. ^_^
Top ten villains are next, won’t it Oscar😏😏😏
I want Superheroes.
Personal Honorable Mentions:
Sonic (Sonic the Hedgehog)
Ragna the Bloodedge (Blazblue)
Dust (Dust and Elysian Tail)
Makoto Yuuki (Persona 3)
Sol Badguy and Ky Kiske (Guilty Gear)
A masterpiece! Nuff said. 🙂
Because of entry number 6. Spoiler warning.

Then RAIN from Final Fantasy:Brave Exvius
Or MONT from Final Fantasy:War Of The Vishions that fits ur rules
Honestly I’d say Kirby is an underrated hero
I agree, though i can see why. Kirby is more a heroic force of nature than a heroic character.
Yeah, I would subtract points for never killing and way more for never hitting women.
But if you had to pick a link which one
So...
Path of Radiance rerelease when?
So, are we supposed to shoot Oscar now because he did it again? I mean, he told us to do it, and I'm loaded 🔫
Nah, that’s only if it’s used for a Weapons Month.
