Ex-ruckmanite here. I loved this video! My family are all Ruckmanites and I am planning to write a paper of some sorts pointing out Ruckman tripping over his arrogance and false friends to show them why I no longer am one. Thank you for your time, knowledge, and patience Mark!
May God bless you and keep you. I pray it will go well with your family and hopefully they can be brought out of such doctrines. For the glory of God alone ❤🙏
Interesting.... Arrogantly denigrating Bible believers with pejorative scorn and ridicule by calling them names while judging others for being arrogant. Nice!
@@markwardonwordsI'd never heard of this man. If what you say about him is accurate (and I don't doubt that it is) why would any genuine Christian be following such a person?! That's mind boggling. And disturbing.
@@Yesica1993 it’s easier than you could imagine. Ruckman was no dummy. We saw him as one of the few warriors on the battlefield fighting to protect the Bible from those would destroy it. It’s even easier when my pastor would make home the featured speaker every night for a week of meetings that was a huge Bible conference. Ruckman was treated as the smartest guy in the room . Truth be told, he most likely was. So when he would make these comments from the pulpit, he got tons of , “Amen!”s. Those young school kids who were influenced by this are now pastors and evangelists who’ve been in that line of work for over 20 years. You’ve seen it I other places. The cult of personality is so strong that you just accept what he being said. Why? Because it is already understood to be true, my pastor, and by extension, Ruckman, wouldn’t lie to us, so there was nothing to apply critical thought to later.
I probably wouldn't have given Ruckman a second thought in a world in which I hadn't spent 17 years at a church that extolled the man. Indeed, especially in my last years there, I remember my old pastor bringing in, service after service, his Ruckman Reference Bible, his Ruckman commentaries, Ruckman book on this, Ruckman book on that. I never really was a follower of Ruckman's unique teachings when I heard them. It never made sense to me that the KJV would need to be inspired again or be "advanced revelation" as he called it. His unique, weird, bizarre, off the wall beliefs struck me as just that. I did notice how he had to make up some new "doctrine" to explain why the KJV was right and the new versions wrong every single time they differed at all. Sadly, even the guy I was relatively closest to at my last church, still thinks Ruckman was overall a great teacher and man of God. I just don't know what to say to such people any more. Ruckmanism may be a fringe of a fringe of a fringe group, when you are in it, it can seem overwhelming. Though I have been out of that world a little over four years now, it is still a work in progress. I've basically had to start from scratch with church a friends, in a life where I've already been largely isolated for the most part. I'm in a much healthier church now, with good friends, but many elements of life are still experienced like one learning how to walk again, or even for the first time. I am grateful that God is immeasurably good, and his truth is "a light to me in dark places, when all other lights go out." God bless, brother
When you try to imitate or hate on Ruckman, you sound a lot like my mom (when I was a child) jumping on me for something I’d done wrong. And when you do the sarcastic Shakespeare voice while quoting the King James, you sound like woman. You seem to be born a male, but it seems you think like a woman. Maybe someone dealing with so much confusion shouldn’t be teaching the word of God. I hope you can get rid of hate and be yourself someday, and most of all I hope your saved.
No doubt you’ve said this before, but even the best translated text in the entire English language would eventually have false friends if it was almost 415 years old. Your work is amazing as always and, quite frankly, has lead me out of my own general search for “the perfect Bible” into sticking to and simply reading the Bible in a modern translation. For my own personal reasons I prefer the TR and Majority Text (even if they’re probably not in the original text, many verses in the New Testament are part of church tradition and the text seems jarring without them), but the work that critical scholars do shouldn’t be scoffed at, nor should your own scholarship that has taught me as much about 17th century English as it has about the folly of KJOism
Lesson to be learned: never make it your brand to be a constant contrarian. Otherwise, you might find yourself continuing to be a contrarian for the rest of your life in order to sustain your brand--even when your legitimate objections have been fully addressed already.
I'm maybe not fully following you. Are you talking about Ruckman or me? ;) Seriously, brother, I'm nervous about how harsh I am here, but I feel Ruckman is one who deserves it. He is an Alexander the Coppersmith who has done Christ's body much evil. Them that sin rebuke before all that others may fear.
@@markwardonwords Mark, one thing I appreciate about your stance in this video is your choice of not deciding on Ruckman’s motive in his actions. Does he say these things out of true ignorance - or knowingly, does he say these things due to a more nefarious agenda? At any rate, just as you stated, “I trust him zero.” One thing is most clear - his vitriolic speech can in no way be seen as Christ-like and is clearly a great detriment to the Church. I am brought back to my earlier days within the IFB. I was certainly surrounded by very caring, loving people, who though very dogmatic about their stance upon the KJV, did not speak with the rancor of a Ruckman. Sadly though, there were a few who very clearly did. Brother, I very much appreciate your constant and sincere attempt to speak in a caring and truthful manner, along with the restraint you take when dealing with those who are, shall we say, extreme in their own rhetoric.
Really well done, brother! Thank you for this video. It is easily one of my favorites now as an ex-Ruckmanite, myself. You are not by any means being too harsh. You may very well get through to current Ruckmanites with a little salt.
"Vile and bizarre." Well said, and exactly my experience as well. Dr. Ward, the best thing you do here is give me an example that keeps me from going postal when I encounter these folks. I so appreciate your calm and measured responses...it teaches me as effectively as the content teaches me.
This video is pretty much me going postal. I can think of only one or two other videos where I do this sort of thing. Both targeted men who, I believe, were especially heinous and especially damaging to Christ's body. The other guys I targeted with this kind of biting speech were on the right, the numerology guy, and on the left, Samuel Perry.
@@markwardonwords I have family who got caught up in Ruckmanism and your channel has been invaluable. I’m hoping one day we can talk and I can bring all this up. Thanks for your hard work and humble attitude.
I appreciate the video. I watch every video I can from you. It is quite a coincidence I was speaking to a ruckmanite about ruckman theology (dispensational salvation) a week ago. I confronted it right away, but he knew his talking points (or as I would refer to “wise in his own conceit). I spent this week listening to understand what Ruckman was trying to say. And you just happened to post a video on Ruckman. Of course, the coincidence was led by the HS. So may God be praised!
One odd effect of your KJV Onlyist videos and your false friends videos is that they are making me more interested in reading and appreciating the KJV again. Thinking about the Bible in this way adds an additional level of "fun" to reading the Bible. It also got me thinking that the KJV translators use of Shakespearean/Elizabethan English in the KJV has "Shakespearianized" that version of the Bible for all time, and lends some drama and 'theatre' to the Bible that KJV aficionados find missing from the modern translations. The KJV also sort of grafts the 'beauty' and drama of 1600s Renaissance England onto the ancient world of the Old Testament, and also onto the 1st Century Roman Empire of the New Testament. The KJV gives us the wonderful effect as if the Bible has been combined with Shakespeare's Anthony and Cleopatra, Julius Caesar, Coriolanus and Titus Andronicus; so that we have a new creation that has fused the greatest scripture in the world with the greatest literature in the world. No wonder people are slow to give it up for a modern translation (which is easier to understand, but less theatrical, dramatic, and 'beautiful').
You're not the only one who's felt this! I am another one! I'm 100% with you in all you say. And for the people who can handle this layer of fun, more power to them! I don't believe a single one of them is getting everything the KJV translators were trying to communicate: there are just too many subtle false friends. But a lot of people can get a lot from the KJV. I'm here, though, as you know, to protect the weakest plowboys and plowgirls from being browbeaten by those who sneer at them for struggling with the KJV. And that's a large, large group of dear Christian people.
@@markwardonwords Yes indeed. Your protection is needed, and I am sure, appreciated. I love the NLT as well as the NASB. There is room for many translations which serve different purposes, including the KJV. We moved out of WA a couple of years ago. It is a shame that I missed a chance to come up to 'your fair city' and visit you.
@@WhatsinyourBible Yup, that’s increasingly been my experience over the past 10 years by my “KJVO” pastor who feels a need to ignore or correct the parts of the Bible that he doesn’t agree with.
I would suggest they used will-worship because it buttressed the Regulative Principle of Worship. The Puritans in particular were quite willing to wield this word/phrase against any who appeared to have novel (or "Papist" in their eyes) elements of worship.
Off topic: just wanted to say thanks Mark. About a year ago i went on a journey out of the IFB movement. A big part of that was the kjvoism that was deeply embedded as an emotional stronghold. Even as i came out of all of the other practices and traditions that have no biblical basis, the kjv onlyism had been stuck deep down in my ego, and i didnt want to let it go... But in your videos you constantly provide well researched information and present it in a way that doesn't attack and ostracize those who disagree with you. You have perhaps inadvertently challenged me to continue challenging each "argument" from that crowd and as one fell so too did the others until finally i had to accept that i was wrong. And now, as i continue on in discipleship and evangelism i no longer feel the burden to spend the few precious minutes i have when i get to share the bible with people, on cross translating the kjv to modern English 😅 I dont know how difficult it is for you to maintain your loving attitude as you reach across the aisle. I imagine the temptation to fire back with ad hominems and insults is present. I hope you will be encouraged that your approach is both, what i understand to be the biblical model and it specifically played a role in helping me grow out of some unhealthy beliefs, continue on the good work brother.
This is super meaningful to me. Thank you! I shared it with my wife. It's ironic that you'd make this comment on this video: I definitely chose to insult Ruckman. There are some men who are beyond the pale, who ought to be treated as Jesus treated the Pharisees in Matthew 23. But, yes, I think those men are rarities in the KJV-Only movement.
>>>>But in your videos you constantly provide well researched information and present it in a way that doesn't attack and ostracize those who disagree with you
@markwardonwords haha I left the comment before watching this video because I felt compelled after watching another video to share that thought with you in your most recent posted video so you would see it, and the irony is not lost on me 😂 But 2 points to consider, one your level of light ribbing and sarcastic takes are nothing compared to many of the vile things I've heard people in the ruckman camp say towards those with whom they disagree. Two, there is a biblical time for stronger words against those who are causing severe harm in the body of Christ. The letter from Jude comes to mind immediately as an example and we will all give account for the decisions we make and our heart in so doing. I trust you have examined your own heart in your approach to dealing with specific individuals. God give you wisdom as you continue to bring truth to Christians! 🙏
@@isanyoneelseheretoday I do believe you’re right, that Ruckman was a wicked man who deserves harsh words because of the great evil he has done to Christ’s body. He tore at the throats of so many of Christ’s sheep.
That was so good. My KJVOnly mentors rejected Ruckmanism. I never read any of Ruckman's material. I still haven't. I heard enough to know better. But what kills me is how many of these arguments from Ruckman were nearly repeated verbatim by my mentors. Now I wonder, did they reject him in name only? They seemingly accepted his arguments, conclusion, and philosophy.
This is precisely my experience with effectively all brands of KJV defense. I'm not even saying they read Ruckman. But somehow they end up saying the same things he said.
@@markwardonwords This is true. You recognize Ruckman teaching, then when you point it out. Pastors make a point of saying how wrong you are. Yet the double inspiration and the English correcting the Greek is rampant in KJO and Ruckman seems to be the source or the most influential purveyor of that teaching. So where did these guys get it from? 🤔
Let me give you a different possibility to consider, from someone who DID study under Dr. Ruckman. I graduated from his institute and consider him a friend and teacher. Ward is confused. He is equating Ruckmanism with KJV-onlyism. He says, “KJV-onlyists are actually Ruckmanites!” No, Mark, you are wrongly assigning KJV-onlyist beliefs to Dr. Ruckman then being surprised that they “believe the same thing.” When I try to get Mark to hear his mistake, he replies, “I can’t read Ruckman enough to see if you’re right, because his language is so rough.” Well, ok then, I guess. 🤷♂️ But I, a bonafide Ruckmanite, in good faith, am trying to tell him that he is misrepresenting Ruckman’s teaching.
@@markwardonwordsyou THINK it’s Ruckman’s teaching. It’s not. It’s theirs. I don’t know how to tell you in a way you’ll understand. You are way off base here, Mark.
@@mrbuck1911 They get it through believing and studying their King James Bibles, which they trust, as did generations of believers before them, to be exactly what it claims to be.
I was taught the same thing as this ex-ruckmanite, that everywhere the modern versions "changed" the 1611, they were covering up a secret, a very important doctrine. Most of the very zealous KJOnly ruckmanite preachers I've listened to (and a few that aren't ruckmanites) have done this exact thing. The supposed (errors) in the KJV are actually advanced revelation from God. The funny thing is that Ruckman and many other devoted KJV who write these books and tracts actually helped me find all the places where they are wrong. It's simple. I pick up a 1611 facsimile and read the marginal notes, and in about 75%+ of the places, the marginal notes agree with modern translations. Remember when the secular world wrote bad things about Jesus, and we use this today as evidence that Jesus existed and did miracles. Ruckmanites do the same thing with "errors" in the modern translations. They might not know it, but they are directing peoples attention to these passages, and the prudent will search it out and come to the conclusion that they are wrong, slandering, or promoting conspiracies. Thank you, ruckmanites, for helping me find false friends. :)
16:51 That's like refried beans - *frijoles refritos* in Spanish. It doesn't mean that you fried the beans, and then later fried them again. It means "well fried," or even "well cooked," though it's literally "fried."
Here are some other false friend candidates for you to consider from the book "Think on my Words: Exploring Shakespeare's Language" (see the chapter on 'false friends' and the appendix). I am assuming that you know the modern meaning of these words, so I have listed only the 1600's meaning in parenthesis: naughty (wicked, evil, vile), heavy (sorrowful), humorous (moody), sad (serious), ecstasy (madness), owe (own), merely (totally), envious (malicious), bootless (useless, pointless, unsuccessful), doubt (to believe that it will - i.e. the opposite of what it means today), awful (awe inspiring, worthy of respect), belch (discharge, emit), catastrophe (denouement or final event in a drama), dainty (excellent, splendid), ecstasy (mental fit or frenzy), fancy (profound love or infatuation) generous (well bred, mannerly, noble minded), honest (1. held in honor, respectable, 2. genuine or real), injury (insult or slight), jog (to move along), keen (1. wise, brave, mighty, fierce, 2. sharp cutting, severe, 3. perceptive shrewd), lover (companion, comrade, dear friend), merely (utterly, entirely), obscene (disgusting, repulsive), portly (stately, majestic, dignified), queasy (delicate, fastidious), rude (violent), silly (helpless, defenseless), teen (distress, suffering), vicious (relating to vice, immoral, depraved), want (lack, to be without), young (recent, vigorous), zany (stooge, clown's assistant).
My only experience with Ruckman is "Ruckman's Apocalypse." This is a large volume containing glossy prints of Ruckman's paintings that illustrate some of his eschatological views. I came across it a while back in a Kentucky mall in a bookstore, all by itself. It was so bizarre and interesting I had to buy it. I actually hadn't thought of Ruckman since that time until I started following this channel. Some of the paintings are dated in their interpretation of end-times events (think 1980s pop-eschatology), but it certainly isn't dull to look at. It contains graphic depictions of of blood, hell, demons, angels,, Antichrist, the Whore of Babylon, apocalyptic plagues, and...UFOs. (Yes, UFOs.)
I do like some of his artwork, but you know what you're in for when the dust jacket lets you know up front that he is self-taught and has no formal training. (If only that were being said in a spirit of humility...) It's the same thing that comes to mind when I see him drawing illustrations during his sermons: it's a pretty neat conceit, but I could do without the home video releases describing him as an "Accomplished Artist and Author" alongside his degrees.
Praise the Lord for this no name ex-Ruckmanite. I glad that guy is opening his mind to searching for clear understanding on the doctrine of Bible. Praise God for that. What a joy!
This issue is dividing the Body of Christ. In my studies I have found that there are those that hate the KJV and look for any reason to reject it.Then there the KJV only crowd. I use the KJV and I also use all the other good translations but if we are honest we would have to admit that there a LOT of so called translation that must be rejected. Do your own home work and use the tools available and men like Peter Ruckman will not be a problem.
@@shellymorrison3822 I would get in trouble with one of those. I am not the person who needs to know if Dr Ward ever comes out with something like that. I have a nasty habit of tweaking those with whom I disagree. Don’t do it, Mark.
Mansions, I once heard an IFB pastor go into quite a bit of detail, accurately, about how rooms were added to dwellings at the time and I thought finally, he understands mansions is not how we think of them but nope, he still knocks modern translations for not using the word. 😂 I respect pastors but one must search the scriptures themselves for understanding as well.
I loved your plough boy interview, that was a standard Troup with some KJV only folks I knew. How I heard it used was the KJV Bible was written for the plough-boy so he could get saved and one needed no other theology except the KJV.
I'm actually surprised that Ruckman recommended putting anything in the Margins, as many KJV onlyists in his tradition (Like Gipp) BLASTS other translations for having marginal notes.
Did you at one time post on Bible Forums Mark? Just asking as a dear brother and friend & I exchanged ideas there. I was a KJV apologist on the forum. You may have known me as "the Parson" if you were indeed that Mark Ward. It's interesting that you mentioned the "Gap Theory".
@@markwardonwords No, Bible Forums has gone the way of the DoDo bird Mark. I think you can find bits and pieces of it in the Internet Archive. But not enough to see how many discussions over the KJV there were. FYI, I'm not a fundamentalist, and especially not a Ruckmanite here. Historic Baptist.

In facts your Television is throwing millions of icons on a screen and your own Bible has icons all through it in a since, because the alphabet has a meaning behind every letter/icon and you yourself are made in the icon of God.
I agree with your assessment of Ruckman. However when I was deep into KJV only-ism he and the other folks you mentioned were regarded as almost saints at least with the people I knew.
I find it interesting how there are so many polarizing figures among biblical academics. I’m still growing in my faith (your videos are a big part of that!) and I’ve recently resolved to read the whole bible. But I’ve been hopping between translations, I can’t really decide. If I may ask, what do you think of David Bentley Hart and his NT translation? I don’t agree with his politics/beliefs, but his NT translation seems to be well received among academics. Thanks Mark! God bless!
There are also a ton of not-polarizing figures. In fact, I’d say the vast majority of biblical academics-in evangelicalism, at least-are not polarizing. I also wouldn’t call Ruckman an academic, though he had some academic skills and knowledge. I haven’t had a chance to really read through Hart’s translation. I tend to want to stick with more mainstream, committee-based, evangelical translations. And I found Hart’s comments about existing translations to be somewhat condescending. No doubt the man is utterly brilliant. But the parts I read of his NT were not earth shattering.
@@markwardonwords Thank you for your kind response! I truly appreciate your insight. Thanks again!
I had never heard of Peter Ruckman until some dear friends of mine got into KJVO. I'm glad you're taking this on. He needs to be called out as a false teacher. I use those words very hesitantly.
I've heard you talk about "mansion" before, but I happened to wonder just now whether the KJV use of "mansion" caused the transition of the word's meaning in English. Perhaps people knew that we had a "mansion" in heaven and understood it to be a "room", but since it was a heavenly room it would naturally be beyond words, so they started applying the word "mansion" in a figurative sense to huge, opulent houses owned by the wealthy, and did so for so long that the figurative sense was eventually lost and became the literal sense.
I am an IFB myself but clearly see through ruckman and his false teachings. I am sure to make it known (without causing issues) that his teachings are bad news and to be avoided. I am so glad more people are taking a stand against that bad theology. I am keeping those in my church under this influence in prayer, asking the Lord to open their eyes to see how bad this man is.
My friend, I really appreciate this comment. I join you in your prayer. I wonder if you'd be willing to give me some feedback on a video that I think would be relevant to you? ua-cam.com/video/18rs7daUf7M/v-deo.html
I don't know if I had ever heard Ruckman was a graduate of BJU. 😮 I feel like I should have known that. I was just telling the brothers in our weekly bible study that if they wanted to go down a rabbit hole to look up Peter Ruckman. Now the rabbit hole is even deeper. I thought the only connection I had to him was some of the terrible theology I used to believe.
Anyone who knows how translations are made would know that any particular translation into another language is only as good as the original script used. We know the history of the TR and the authorized version as well as all the various other translated versions of the original texts. I've read some of Ruckmans works so I know how absolute he is. It just strikes me weird that someone with his academic credentials could be so sure he knows exactly how to translate the copies we know about.
Thank you for another excellent posting. I had the misfortune of being in a service while I was in high school by guess who yes ruckman. Talk about someone who thought they were perfect. I have never seen a so called pastor hurl insults at people like him other than his favorite follower born again barbarian. If their goal was to turn people from our lord and savior Jesus christ I'm pretty sure they succeeded. Honestly when I here the name ruckman it literally makes me nauseated.
This is what I was trying to point out in a comment. He never seemed like he was going to explode from angry rage. He seemed like he was perfect and tossing insults at what disagreed with was just factual. Very cool and level headed about it. His listeners were in awe of him. He was good a being dismissive of those who were critical of him. Their points may have been powerful, but Ruckman’s dismissiveness made the criticisms seem so trivial. You just nodded and laughed at the insult.
I was invited, in 2018 - 2022, to attend a church by someone who graduated from Ruckman's bible school in Florida U.S.A., who leads a small congregation of people in the town of Borongan City, here in the Philippines. I was sent into his Church by the Lord to "examine" what the people were hearing who were attending and involved in the leader's ministry, and i was shocked by some of the things i heard come out of his mouth. Very soon in my "spy" mission, i heard the leader say; "I believe i can murder someone and still go to heaven." Wow! that was just the beginning of some other "nonsense" i heard. The leader sounded much like Ruckman...very little compassion for the Roman Catholic people he was trying to reach, very dogmatic, and was an extreme KJV bible believer. I once asked him "What would you do if you did not have a KJV bible...could you still live the Christian life?" He was not able to answer me. The leader was able to memorize many verses in the bible, but was trying to preach without Spiritual understanding, so i discerned he got that from Ruckman also. Sadly, the leader has recruited other Filipino Christian men to become Pastors and now they have their own "KJV Bible only" believing churches. I tried to warn the leader that he has a "cult" but of course...he would not listen. I will also say that i heard the name "Dr. Ruckman" more than i heard the name of Jesus Christ while i attended that cult. Sad.
Me heart really breaks at the ignorance out there. I take comfort in what Paul said in 1 Cor 1, that God uses the weak and foolish things of this world to confound the wise.
You don’t believe you can murderer someone and still go to heaven? Paul, David, and Moses would like a word… Also, if you have ever hated a brother, you are guilty of murderer.

The KJV is a TRANSLATION that has had edits over the years.
The passage in genesis 9:6 got me (I was we’ll up to date on the water blood system doctrine, the fruit on the tree was actually a grape, we lost the image of God, ect.) but that passage never really gets a good explanation for it lol I remember going right to my RRB (also have his commentary book of Genesis.) and pastor Kim has a word by word commentary on Genesis as well, both (in my opinion) kinda just shew it away basically saying “we’ll this obviously doesn’t mean what it clearly says because I showed you how this doesn’t mean that even though it says just that.” sorry I know that sounds confusing. I honestly think they know this passage kills that whole doctrine and whatever scripture they skipped to while making it. If we lost the image of God back in the early stages of Genesis But yet in Genesis 9:6 we clearly see man (all Humans.) still being referred to as being “made in Gods imagine.” But yet they argue about taking the scripture word for word 😐
I have seen the "Ruckman" Bible for sale, but never knew who or what it was about. All I can say is this is what I believe; the Alexandrians were Gnostics. Acts 6:9-12. I am Textus Receptus all the way! It does not have to be KJV only, either.
Then we have little quarrel! I'm fine with those who prefer the TR, as long as they are fine with modern, intelligible translations of it-and as long as they don't actively condemn my Bible as corrupt.
See, it blows my mind to hear you say that BJU was not KJVO, as the IFB church I attended in my youth was spearheaded by a pastor (sir name "Vanaman" with many family members who attended BJU) who was rabidly KJVO and who also intimated that the only two schools a good Christian could go to were Bob Jones or Pensacola Christian College. Also.... "fleshpots"?
Regarding "replenish" with Adam, if you look at Genesis 1 in the Ruckman Reference Bible, you can see he doesn't just hold to the Gap Theory, he calls it "The Gap Fact," and I think he uses his misinterpretation to support his idiosyncratic (but consistent with his extreme Dispensationalism) view.
I don't think it can be overstated how popular the Gap Theory became within fundamentalist Baptist circles during the 20th century. And in my more cynical moments, I wonder how much of its decline is truly due to its hermeneutical problems rather than to other factors. It doesn't lend itself well to anti-science rhetoric (since it's essentially agnostic about what sort of creative processes occurred before the six-day "reconstruction" of the world), which means that it's far less politically useful. For those who seek to be profiteers in the culture wars, the YEC theory is far more lucrative. (That's not to say that all or even most YEC Christians are motivated by such nefarious purposes, but it is certainly convenient for those who are.)
"Ruckman served as Commander of the Southern Department in the direct aftermath of the Houston Riot (1917). The riot resulted in 63 African-American soldiers being put on trial. After the trial proceedings ended on November 30, Ruckman kept the verdicts and sentences secret including for 13 sentenced to hanged. Ruckman ordered for the executions to occur on December 11 without a review by President Woodrow Wilson and without an opportunity for the soldiers to file an appeal. Ruckman's hastiness to execute African-American soldiers in secret sparked outrage and led the Department of War to amend General Order No. 7 to state that no death sentence could be carried out by a military court inside the territorial boundaries of the United States until reviewed personally by the president. Although his decision-making was supported by Woodrow Wilson (in a public statement),[citation needed] Ruckman was quietly relieved of command in May 1918, reduced in rank to a brigadier general, and not posted with the American Expeditionary Force in Europe"
I appreciate all the hard work you have put in on all your videos. I’ve gleaned very much from your teachings, and apologetics. I also appreciate how you stay humble, calm, and consistent amongst the many kjvo arguments made. And I pray for all of those who still expound and continue to spout his many false teachings.
You're demonstrably wrong. Read 1 Thessalonians 4.11. If you won't bother to learn how to read the KJV properly, then you have no business being King James Only. Do the due diligence or choose another version.
@@rgamis I have read the context. Paul has been talking about how the gospel is not bound even though he is currently imprisoned. He is thus instructing Timothy to preach the gospel accurately (in contrast to the "babblings" of the false teachers), and he uses the extended metaphor of a worker who strives to receive approval rather than shame by making accurate straight cuts/lines.

Peter Ruckman is Peter Ruckman. I have found that he does have some good points but it is very hard if not impossible to get past his arrogance!! I simply do not have the time to get all worked up over how screwed up this man was. It is sad that so many are proud to be called a Ruckmanite.
He that hated his brothers had no eternal life abiding in him. He imparted the spirit of murderer to Peter Ruckman Jr.. So only quote men not in hell to have a real discussion.
Very timely! I was just now in the process of reviewing the meaning of "replenish" in Genesis 1:28. And congratulations on contributing to the conversion of an ex-Ruckmanite.Thanks for all of your hard work! Blessings!🙏📖
@@markwardonwords I can understand it. It almost feels like the "ghost of Peter Ruckman" might haunt you after this. I dare say his "ghost" is still haunting some. But the information in this video is not debatable.
I've read Ruckman's book attempting to refute James White's book, and after you get through the wall of insults and incoherent babble, Ruckman refuted nothing. Everything I have read from him is just like that. His books are just full of incoherent babble and insults and wild assertions.
I just can't take more than a page. I can hardly take more than a paragraph. He's so violent and arrogant. There is no Christian love in anything I read from that man.
James White tried multiple times to reach out to him as a brother, and all he got back was the same vile vitriol. Eventually White gave up, and I don't blame him.
Thank you so much for sharing this! I think Ruckman must be who influenced my "christian" KJV only neighbors. We recently moved into this neighborhood, they seem so divisive & at the same time believe themselves to be convicted christian teachers. (Soo sad)... God give all of us EYES to SEE our own sins, and to love God; His Word; His children & our neighbors!
I've posted this before but I want to say this again. THANK YOU, Dr. Ward. You and Dr. Everhard both helped me overcome KJV-Onlyism, a few years ago. And, videos like this one continue to help me. Thank you.
So glad to hear this! And now the challenge is to use our freedom to read God's word in our own English and to really pursue and achieve understanding!
When I asked a KJV-only advocate about why he doesn't use a NKJV if its the same Greek/Hebrew text as the KJV, he told me to read Ruckman's book "About the New King James Version". So I did. It was the worst book I have ever read. He spent most of his time calling the people behind the NKJV evil, stupid, money hungry, communist, Catholic, and part of the “Alexandrian cult”. And his actual arguments against the text NKJV were just completely wrong.
That's my biggest issue with his stance. I could at least try to sympathize with his concerns over the major versions that came out between 1901 and 1978. But the NKJV addressed his two core complaints about those versions--the underlying Greek text and the translators' theological leanings--yet he still went out of his way to find every last nit to pick rather than just saying, "It's not perfect, but it's way better than the others."
There are far too many people like Ruckman on the internet who have arrogantly designated themselves the protectors, or antibodies, of the body of Christ while in fact just being a cancer. Its easy to see from your videos that is not your heart or your normal way of operating. Im tired of the church letting these bullies who ignore john 13:35 run rampant and unchecked, so i say expose in love and humility. My only suggestion would be maybe do the readings of the author (Ruckman in this case) in a bit more neutral fashion to let their tone come through the words rather than your voice.
@@markwardonwords haha I mean it's certainly not a stretch of the imagination. I never knew much about Ruckman, but what I've seen made me envision theology as done by Yosemite Sam
You should add "know" / "knew" to your list of false friends. Genesis 4:1 -And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD." Per the Internet: In the Bible, the verb "know" or "knew" is used as a euphemism for sexual intercourse. The term "carnal knowledge" comes from the word "carnal," which means "of the flesh"." The Definition from Oxford Languages on the internet lists as archaic: "have sexual intercourse with (someone)."
I have to admit, I was weary of your work at first, maybe even offended. But now I see the beauty and worthiness of your work and I highly value your insight. I know you're busy, but I have a translation question about Mark 7:3. The main issue is the use of the Greek word "pygme"...the pharisees and Jews eat not "except they wash their hands oft (pygme)"...Translated here in the KJV as "oft" which I assume means often? In the sense how we would understand often today, as not rarely but regularly. However the word "pygme" literally means "the fist". Codex Sinaiaticus has a textual variant that reads "pukne" which means often. How did the KJV translators come to the translation choice "oft" when this seems to be an exclusive reading of Sinaiticus which wasn't discovered by Tischendorf until the 1850's? Is it possible "oft" is a false friend and meant something else in the 1600's?
Disclaimer: I don't know what I'm talking about). Oft looks like it's just an archaic version of "often." "Often" definition: "frequently, many times" (this is modern, i don't have access to the OED) The greek definition I'm getting for the word translated as "oft" helps.... πυγμή pugmē, poog-may´; from a prim. πύξ pux (the fist as a weapon); the clenched hand. i.e. (only in dat. as adv.) with the fist (hard scrubbing):-oft. I think you found a false friend.
I appreciate the note! AWESOME question. Can't believe I haven't run across this before. Here's France: "The difficulty of making sense of πυγμῇ, together with its wide attestation, leaves little room for doubt that it is the original reading. Its omission (Δ sys copsa) or the substitution of πυκνά (א W etc.) are obvious devices to deal with a troublesome word." "πυγμῇ (see Textual Note) means literally ‘with the fist’. We have no other evidence for what the expression might mean in connection with hand washing, and the various quasi-literal meanings proposed by translators and commentators17 (‘up to the wrist’; ‘up to the elbow’; ‘their hands and their wrists’; ‘with cupped hands’; ‘with a handful of water’)18 are merely guesses; others, perhaps more wisely, opt for a less literal paraphrase (not necessarily presupposing the variant reading πυκνά) such as ‘thoroughly’ or ‘ceremonially’.19 Whatever the exact form it took, what Mark describes is ritual purification rather than hygienic washing." R. T. France, The Gospel of Mark: A Commentary on the Greek Text, New International Greek Testament Commentary (Grand Rapids, MI; Carlisle: W.B. Eerdmans; Paternoster Press, 2002), 275. And here's Mark Ward: I checked the NA28 apparatus, and among the four ancient Greek texts and four translations they list that read πυκνα ("often"), I don't know which the KJV translators had access to. My *guess* is that they had the translations and not the Greek texts. We'd have to check with a real expert to find out. My hypothesis at this point is twofold: the existing reading (πυγμη) is so difficult that the KJV translators did not use it. Instead of going with an existing Greek reading they went with the main translation tradition, probably mainly the Vulgate.
@@Emuu-r6o Yeah that’s what I was thinking too, but I’m not completely sure. The Latin Vulgate reads “crebro” which means frequently or often. My initial thought when I saw this was that the KJV translators must be following the Vulgates rendering of the Greek “pukne”. Especially considering that pygme/pukne is a hapax legomenon, and no other spot in Scripture can be used for comparison. Upon further research, I found that just about all English Protestant era translations use “oft” or some form of that word at Mark 7:3, including Tyndale! I have a hard time thinking Tyndale with his disdain for the Latin translations and the Catholic Church would simply copy and paste their translation…? Luther uses the German word “manchmal” which means sometimes, so that doesn’t seem to help either
This is probably just my pareidolia.... But the definitions of "with the fist" and "many times" feels like a very close connection. The "oft" describes the intensity of the hand-washing rather than the number of hand washings that occurred during the day. The handwashing in question was before they could eat. So unless they could wash their hands (to use a modern example) "for 2 minutes" they didn't consider themselves clean. This could mean the disciples "rinsed their hands" in the previous verse, but didn't meet the elder's traditional ceremony and offended the Pharisees. This changes the meaning of the passage to speak of ceremonial religiosity rather than actual cleanliness.
@@markwardonwords Interesting, I was under the impression that "pukna" was a variant found only in Codex Sinaiticus. I'll need to research that further. I agree with France, that Jesus seems to be referring to ritual purification rather than actual cleanliness. Which brings me to my next point... I read an article by David Bruce Gain where he makes the claim that Mark was originally written in Old Latin from Rome. One of his proofs is Mark 7:3. The claim is that Old Latin manuscripts read "unless they wash their hands for a short time (pusillo)". The Old Latin word "pusillo" (for a short time) might have been mistaken for the Old Latin word "pugillo" which means the fist. he claims that in the Old Latin script "S" and "G" look very similar and Pusillo could have been mistaken with Pugillo which would explain the difficult reading of "pygme" in Greek.

Let's imagine for a moment you were unsaved and got married. Then you came home and found your wife in bed with another man. Then she left you, divorced you, and left with that other man. @@jacobblandford5373 So are the translators of many modern versions. For instance, here is a line from the preface of the NASB: "The New American Standard Bible has been produced with the conviction that the words of Scripture as originally penned in the Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek were inspired by God. Since they are the eternal Word of God, the Holy Scriptures speak with fresh power to each generation, to give wisdom that leads to salvation, that men may serve Christ to the glory of God." Or consider this line from the NET preface: "In short, the translators and editors of the NET Bible are committed to following the text where it leads and translating it honestly. The translation philosophy leaves no other options: For the sake of Christ and the truth, the translators and editors are compelled to translate as they have done in the examples above and throughout the NET Bible." And there's this part of the NIV 2011 preface: "The Committee has again been reminded that every human effort is flawed-including this revision of the NIV. We trust, however, that many will find in it an improved representation of the Word of God, through which they hear his call to faith in our Lord Jesus Christ and to service in his kingdom. We offer this version of the Bible to him in whose name and for whose glory it has been made."
10:10 "destroyed the only command in the Bible to 'study' the Bible" Right, Dr. Ruckman. Leaving aside that, even with Ruckman's understanding of the word, 2 Tim 2:15 doesn't say to study *the Bible,* there isn't any other place where the Bible commends its study to God's people (of course, he didn't believe that God's people were a single group, compounding his error). Certainly Psalm 119 doesn't. Or Jeremiah 31:33. Or Hebrews 8:10. Or Acts 17:11. Or Deuteronomy 6:7 or 11:19. Nope, there's no other place. Possibly worse than Ruckman's nastiness (which you, as per usual, state more eloquently than I) is/was his dishonesty.
Nobody understands every word in the KJV otherwise we would be God. He stood firm in the avalanche of unrelented attacks against the KJV. 100 years from now he will be remembered whereas you will most certainly not. Finally, he correctly submitted to the Book whereas you people refuse to.
People in 1611 understood the words in the KJV. Understanding the Bible's underlying concepts is a different matter. Someone reading the KJV in the 17th century would have had the same ease and the same difficulty as someone reading the NKJV in the 20th century.
Much of that rhetoric seems to be sarcasm, as he considered people who "corrected" the KJV with their own supposed understanding of the Greek New Testament to be distorters of the truth. He did think that the KJV represented a more trustworthy set of readings than the ones found in modern editions of the Greek New Testament, and he was convinced that the English words chosen for the KJV were better than any alternatives that a person could find in a Hebrew or Greek lexicon.
@BrockJamesStory I'm sorry, GOD promised us His Church, the Old Testament, existed. The New Testament was penned in by and through the Church. Please, try worshipping God in the CHURCH He Promised to build and sustain, of which the Scriptures are part of. Do not worship the Scriptures in place of the Church that God built!
@@BrockJamesStory The preface of the KJV quite strongly argues that more than one translation can be the word of God. (The Anglican translators were arguing against the Catholic critics who were making an argument very similar to yours, but with the Latin Vulgate. The KJV committee insisted that all English Protestant translations, no matter how flawed they were, were worthy of being called the word of God.)

Are you saying people who read KJV are above average? I despised English yet have no problem. With the KJV I have to use a dictionary just like anyone reading a modern version has to as well
I used to regularly attend the Bad Attitude Baptist Blowout since its inception when it began under a different name. My church hosted it. I always understood Ruckman to believe that the AV corrected the Greek. I also understood him to believe that the AV translators were indeed working under inspiration of the Holy Spirit. I understood all of those whom I attended church with also understood the same thing about Ruckman and carried those beliefs about the Bible. Mind you, I am remembering back 40-45 years when I was elementary to middle school aged. I carried most, if not all of those beliefs until I ended up in the same church in Greenville with you, Mark. I had a few people helping me from different directions before I understood what inspiration even was. Thank God, for Dr. Minnick! Regarding the way you read his writings, I don't picture him in that tone. Think of him as less angry, and more talking down to you as someone who just has more knowledge than you, and if he has a short comment on something he just said, its like there was a sarcastic mocking tone to those who would hear what he said and disagree. I could never picture him as angry. He seemed more cold than that. Again, 40+ year memories kicking in here, so I'm sure something may be off.
@@markwardonwords. Being in the thick of it, I didn’t understand the hate toward him. I didn’t know the structure of fundamentalism and its various “camps.” My dad went to our church’s Bible Institute, and Ruckman books were the text books for whatever books of the Bible the classes were about. He would often say that Ruckman made good points, but the books were loaded with so much of his rhetoric that he didn’t need even half the amount of pages contained in the book to make the points he was making. Dad now has different views on Ruckman than he did in the 80s in Rochester, NY. The thing that really made me start have a huge change of opinion on him was when I was trying to find pro KJV arguments to what we were dealing with when our pastor started dealing with the translation issue at MCBC. I was on the internet where I came across James White’s letter to Peter Ruckman about having a debate. I thought, this would be good, Dr. Ruckman will wipe the floor with this guy. All I knew about James White was that he wrote books that were anti-KJV. Therefore, he was seriously mislead, probably because he went to a Bible college. Yeah, I know what you’re probably thinking. Anyway, I read Dr. Ruckman’s response to James and oh my, I was stunned. I was a little defeated. He was trying to use some kind of stature that he had in a very small part of Christianity that viewed him as an expert to literally dodge the debate. I wanted to see or at least read these awesome arguments that I would be able to write down in my Bible to skillfully make the points that fight against the heresy of modern translations. But this debate would not happen and it looked like my guy was scared. Then the whole tone of the letter, the rudeness, the arrogance, I was stunned. I finally understood why other KJO brothers didn’t want to associate with him. When I would hear how Dr. Minnick would be critical of a person and their ideas, I recognized the graciousness and patience of how he dealt with those he disagreed with, and it was the complete opposite of what I saw in this letter. Dr. Minnick made it easy to pay attention, learn and be open minded about something I totally disagreed with. In Dr. Ruckman, there was none of that. Dr. Jack Peters is someone who helped me through this as well, and I thank God for putting me in place where I got to know and work with him. If you lived around Greenville, SC and got to know Jack Peters, you know how blessed you were. God is good.

@@markwardonwords Bible believing Christians will love God's words no matter what . And I'm talking about the KJB
I am grateful that God is immeasurably good, and his truth is "a light to me in dark places, when all other lights go out."
God bless, brother
Thank you for these kind words. Yes: false friends have been a perennial problem, and they will come up again.
Lesson to be learned: never make it your brand to be a constant contrarian. Otherwise, you might find yourself continuing to be a contrarian for the rest of your life in order to sustain your brand--even when your legitimate objections have been fully addressed already.
I'm maybe not fully following you. Are you talking about Ruckman or me? ;)

The other guys I targeted with this kind of biting speech were on the right, the numerology guy, and on the left, Samuel Perry.

God has blessed you with intelligence and you have used it for Good and God.Thank You MARK WORD.

Yup, that’s increasingly been my experience over the past 10 years by my “KJVO” pastor who feels a need to ignore or correct the parts of the Bible that he doesn’t agree with.
And now, as i continue on in discipleship and evangelism i no longer feel the burden to spend the few precious minutes i have when i get to share the bible with people, on cross translating the kjv to modern English 😅
I dont know how difficult it is for you to maintain your loving attitude as you reach across the aisle.
>>>>But in your videos you constantly provide well researched information and present it in a way that doesn't attack and ostracize those who disagree with you
@markwardonwords haha I left the comment before watching this video because I felt compelled after watching another video to share that thought with you in your most recent posted video so you would see it, and the irony is not lost on me 😂
But 2 points to consider, one your level of light ribbing and sarcastic takes are nothing compared to many of the vile things I've heard people in the ruckman camp say towards those with whom they disagree.
Ruckman then being surprised that they “believe the same thing.”
When I try to get Mark to hear his mistake, he replies, “I can’t read Ruckman enough to see if you’re right, because his language is so rough.”
Well, ok then, I guess. 🤷♂️ But I, a bonafide Ruckmanite, in good faith, am trying to tell him that he is misrepresenting Ruckman’s teaching.

They get it through believing and studying their King James Bibles, which they trust, as did generations of believers before them, to be exactly what it claims to be.

Excited for this new video.

@@MAMoreno He won souls to Jesus with those drawings. How about you?

Wow! That is a very worthy hypothesis! I love this.

Anyone who knows how translations are made would know that any particular translation into another language is only as good as the original script used. We know the history of the TR and the authorized version as well as all the various other translated versions of the original texts. I've read some of Ruckmans works so I know how absolute he is. Sad.

Older BJU grads often fell for KJV-Onlyism, or they kow-towed to it. Many of them did only undergraduate degrees at the school.
Interesting. I really should have followed that line.
After looking into his dad and grandfather, I'm not surprised where his personality comes from.
Although his decision-making was supported by Woodrow Wilson (in a public statement),[citation needed] Ruckman was quietly relieved of command in May 1918, reduced in rank to a brigadier general, and not posted with the American Expeditionary Force in Europe"

vss 14-19 Paul tells Timothy not to strive about WORDS TO NO PROFIT, that "subvert" hearers. The emphasis is to properly DIVIDE the word of truth - the only proper hermeneutic as a solution to avoid subversion, and misapplication of WORDS. in v17 Paul points out the WORD of Hymenaeus and Philetus - not their outward, external behavior.
The KJV translators knew how to translate the word properly. They knew the difference between STUDY and DILIGENCE and LABOUR. (Titus 3v12; 2Pe. 3v14; 2Pe. 1v10; Heb. 4v11).
Even Noah Webster understood that "study" can mean BOTH to "endeavor diligently" and to "apply the mind to books". Webster even references 1 Thess. 4:11.
Your narrow definition of the word "study", to accommodate how the modern translations use it is based off of a faulty assumption. The KJV translators picked the perfect word that aligns with the context of the chapter - STUDY.

Your narrow-definition of the word "study", to accommodate how the modern translations use it is based off of a faulty assumption. The KJV translators picked the perfect word that aligns with the context of the chapter - STUDY.
Ecclesiastes 12:12 KJV - "And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many BOOKS there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh."

I've read Ruckman's book attempting to refute James White's book, and after you get through the wall of insults and incoherent babble, Ruckman refuted nothing. Everything I have read from him is just like that. His books are just full of incoherent babble and insults and wild assertions.

Thanks for quoting me. But, how does that equate to overcoming belief in the Bible?
When I asked a KJV-only advocate about why he doesn't use a NKJV if its the same Greek/Hebrew text as the KJV, he told me to read Ruckman's book "About the New King James Version". So I did. It was the worst book I have ever read. He spent most of his time calling the people behind the NKJV evil, stupid, money hungry, communist, Catholic, and part of the “Alexandrian cult”. And his actual arguments against the text NKJV were just completely wrong.
Par for the course. One of the saddest things to me is that underneath it all there was some real intellectual ability.
Good advice. Will do in the future.
The spitting maybe didn't help…

You should add "know" / "knew" to your list of false friends. Genesis 4:1 -And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD." Per the Internet: In the Bible, the verb "know" or "knew" is used as a euphemism for sexual intercourse. The term "carnal knowledge" comes from the word "carnal," which means "of the flesh"." The Definition from Oxford Languages on the internet lists as archaic: "have sexual intercourse with (someone)."
Boy… I wonder if English speakers in 1611 did any better than we do today on that? I think it's just a highly literal translation.
Oft looks like it's just an archaic version of "often."
"Often" definition: "frequently, many times" (this is modern, i don't have access to the OED)
The greek definition I'm getting for the word translated as "oft" helps....
πυγμή pugmē, poog-may´; from a prim. πύξ pux (the fist as a weapon); the clenched hand. i.e. (only in dat. as adv.) with the fist (hard scrubbing):-oft.
I think you found a false friend.
I appreciate the note!
AWESOME question. Can't believe I haven't run across this before. Here's France:
"The difficulty of making sense of πυγμῇ, together with its wide attestation, leaves little room for doubt that it is the original reading. Its omission (Δ sys copsa) or the substitution of πυκνά (א W etc.) are obvious devices to deal with a troublesome word."
"πυγμῇ (see Textual Note) means literally ‘with the fist’. We have no other evidence for what the expression might mean in connection with hand washing, and the various quasi-literal meanings proposed by translators and commentators17 (‘up to the wrist’; ‘up to the elbow’; ‘their hands and their wrists’; ‘with cupped hands’; ‘with a handful of water’)18 are merely guesses; others, perhaps more wisely, opt for a less literal paraphrase (not necessarily presupposing the variant reading πυκνά) such as ‘thoroughly’ or ‘ceremonially’.19 Whatever the exact form it took, what Mark describes is ritual purification rather than hygienic washing."
I think he had some things mixed up.

@@jacobblandford5373 So are the translators of many modern versions. For instance, here is a line from the preface of the NASB: "The New American Standard Bible has been produced with the conviction that the words of Scripture as originally penned in the Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek were inspired by God. Since they are the eternal Word of God, the Holy Scriptures speak with fresh power to each generation, to give wisdom that leads to salvation, that men may serve Christ to the glory of God."
Or consider this line from the NET preface: "In short, the translators and editors of the NET Bible are committed to following the text where it leads and translating it honestly. The translation philosophy leaves no other options: For the sake of Christ and the truth, the translators and editors are compelled to translate as they have done in the examples above and throughout the NET Bible."
And there's this part of the NIV 2011 preface: "The Committee has again been reminded that every human effort is flawed-including this revision of the NIV. We trust, however, that many will find in it an improved representation of the Word of God, through which they hear his call to faith in our Lord Jesus Christ and to service in his kingdom. We offer this version of the Bible to him in whose name and for whose glory it has been made."

As always, very interesting. The Catholic Douay-Rheims English translation of 1582 uses the word “superstition” instead of “will worship”.
And could this explain why Ruckman thought that the Greek should be 'corrected ' with the King James?
I like the KJV,but it is Only a version!
Right!
“Only a version” idk what this means.
Either the KJV is the word of God or it’s not. If it’s not tell me where it is, if it is, then read it
