This is why everyone should be treated as innocent until proven guilty and taken to hospital if there are ANY injuries/possible injuries. This was probably the most shocking mr ballen video for me, and saddest. Police put him in squad car on scene for 8 hrs before going to station. For what? They judged him immediately and wanted to implement their own form of punishment first. As soon as someone is in custody, the pd is responsible for their safety. Thats why you see suspects with any ole scrape on the knee being checked out by emt or taken away by ambulance first if they show any sign of injury. I hope this poor man's family sued the police dept.
What amazes me is that he wasn't given medical attention right away suspect or not. When i see someone with a black eye that bad I am under the assumption that this person took a hit to the head. Even if it wasn't gsw's concussion, amnesia are other things that could have very easily explained his behavior as well.
So far as I know, neither of you are in the medical or law enforcement fields, so I understand why you came to the conclusions you did as you were watching. As soon as that investigator heard the words, "I was shot in the eye" he should have had the training and common sense to make sure he was looked at immediately. Heck. It shouldn't have even taken that long. I've only had basic medical training, but even I recognized that there was probably something medical going on. They should have done better with this one. How he wasn't looked over by the medics, I'll never know. How could they have looked at that guy and not known something was wrong? I understand it if you're a total layman, but these are supposed to be trained detectives. How about you notice the bloody obvious and start from there.
To cover themselves they are supposed to take someone in to be checked out if they even claim to be injured. In this case he was Cleary injured and paramedics shouldve been called to check him before they took him in. I wouldve sued them just for the fact that they didn't discipline anyone. That means they were okay with how this was handled
Regardless of what someone does, if that person seems to be injured, they should get medical treatment immediately. So I disagree with the opinion, you can't blame the police.
it wouldnt have made a difference, so you can blame police for bad procedure but not for his brain damage. in the end, if they didnt show up at all, he probably would have died a few days later at home from infection and internal bleeding. so yeah you can blame them, but just not for the whole serious injury thing.
Without a warrant, the police couldn't knock down the door. If it was a rental house, the owner/landlord could have let them in. But if Ryan hadn't come to the door, the police probably would have just left and called Ryan's dad to tell him no one answered the door.
Yeah, I think in order to go in, they'd have to see evidence of a crime, ie. door busted, blood, etc. Otherwise, they can't do anything. There was a case here in Florida where a man killed his entire family and the police did multiple welfare checks but never entered the house. No one knew what was going on until a neighbor called because the murderer was sitting on the porch, acting odd so he called the police.
Yes they hv to see with their own eyes evidence of a crime or someone in danger. Plain view doctrine or something like that. Then they could legally go inside without permission.
How can anyone say that everyone is being too hard on the cops? Medical attention came to look at heather, and instead of getting him medical attention as well they left him handcuffed in their vehicle for hours and hours. It doesn't matter what he did in the cops minds at that point, he should've received medical attention especially since they believed he was wounded because his girlfriend fought back against him. Any wounds on someone you are arresting handcuff them and seek medical fucking attention. This kid lost his life because these cops decided he was guilty right away and even if it was impossible to think otherwise, he should have gotten medical attention.
Also, you can tell that him saying “I don’t know” repeatedly is his brain’s attempt to release pressure and keep himself from overworking itself. And when he’s pressured his brain stresses and he sorta resets. He was clearly going from shock to confusion to an attempt to reach answers. You guys can’t understand what’s off about this but you can sense that there’s something more to it. The hard part about reading him is that his brain is sorta going through different stages of different ages. Childlike and passive to older and somewhat confident.
The fact that the cops saw he had blood on him,did not check whose blood it was,did not notice 4 bulletholes and anterrogated him for hours as he kept explaining what happened in bits and pieces baffles me. What if bro just died during the interrogation from the bullets being in his haead
In defense of the cops, never in a million years would I assume that his behavior was due to a gunshot wound to the head. I would expect anyone who got shot in the brain to be comatose or unable to speak or form thoughts at all. He is eerily cogent for someone who has been through something so traumatic and they do get him to the hospital as soon as they realize how seriously he is injured.
I'm wondering why someone that came in and delusional wouldn't a medic be appointed. I too have epilepsy and he showed serious signs of temporal lobe damage
This is so sad, one of the only cases that made me choke up. The police did mishandle it, you're supposed to rush injured people at a crime scene to the hospital, suspect or not. But like you said, it had already been like 48 hours, those extra 8 hours wouldn't have done much more damage most likely. He probably would have ended up more or less the same. Rest in peace, Heather and Ryan 💔
I predicted this from his initial behaviour what the story was instantly. Confabulation and brain damage go together. But another great lesson on "assuming" in police work. It often ends up very badly for the innocent. Those first 48 hours would have done the most damage unless the bleed was still happening. Leaking away slowly. But the police should always give medical attention no matter what. How did they figure the blood by the sliding door and all the blood on Ryan's pillow? If Heather died on the couch? The evidence would have been there. If they wanted to look for it.
One of the main things I remember from training with arm security/police, you’re supposed assume anything and called emergency services for death injuries. That was a huge mistake on their part. They didn’t check fingerprints, the weapon, anything missing, or the simple fact he kept holding his head.
Absolutely horrifying , poor Ryan suffered severe sezures later eventually dying from a brain bleed from head injuries from his final episode. While he was in ICU they also found Ryan has a broken JAW unrelated to the shooting , the police hit him before cuffing him with such force they broke his jaw! I'm so sorry for his family. We now know the shooting was on Christmas day , the wounds had no scabbing . That Dalton lied and lied he even perjured himself on the stand . Not one po,ice officer went to the hospital at any time, To put more salt into the wound , the father who was at the attack got bitten by a police dog while they were arresting him and they took him , one of the killers ..,,to the hospital for treatment!
Gun shot wounds dont heal to the point in two days. Police are trained to notice things like that.I disagree. Yes he had brain damage. But the point is suspect have rights too. It was made worse. Even if nothing could be done you still need to follow procedures. By law your suppose to take them to the hospital. Once cleared you go to jail or your interrogated. Not before. A medical professional needs to assess that not non medical people.
Sorry, this just sucks because I could tell right away that his brain is actually going through different stages of trauma and I can’t stand that other people couldn’t notice this and reacted as if he was guilty until proven innocence. This is sad because I never thought these things when first watching so my mind is incapable of comprehending how everyone immediately believed he was simply acting or lying on purpose. It’s as if people just have no hope if they ever are the victim and genuinely confused. I get that y’all were reaching and I’m glad you guys said that but it’s heartbreaking for me to remember that none of this could’ve had happened. The signs were overlooked and this kid clearly had injuries that should’ve been seen in the first place…
tbh as much as it sucks, once you actually understand police procedure it makes a little more sense how it would of been missed. It started as a welfare check so it mostly just involved normal police officers who dont usually get mixed up in homicide. So when they found the dead girl they just detained him, while they had to call it in. And as you said it had already been 2 days so yeah blood would dry and the bullet holes would be less noticable and just looks like a black eye. If it had been a normal homicide call paramedics would have been there and he would have definitely been looked at more thoroughly before being detained. but since it was just a check up, no one would of known what to expect. So all the while he's in the back of the car, once he got to the police station he would have got booked straight away and immediately placed into holding while he awaited his interrogation. So because he was found next to a dead girl the police kinda have to assume the worst because if he had been the killer he might attack the police officer or try to slip away. SO yes they have to detain them. But because it really was just a standard check in the only time someone really might have had the chance to actually notice that his was injured more than he says he is, would be when they are sitting across from him in the interrogation. Feel bad it happened and hope his parents find some sort of solace, but it is easy to understand when you take into consider all circumstances how this might have gone unnoticed. I do hope nothing like this happens again, but as kidd said he had basically already been stumbling around for about 48 hours. so all that internal bleeding would have been already in effect with permanent damage of his mind.
Well even if he was the suspect, why the f*ck wouldnt he be checked on by ambulance staff or something when he obviously was injured? Just really poorly handled by the police
I agree with your comment one of the only ones that I saw that says basically your innocent until proven guilty which he wasn’t proven even Dalton said he couldn’t charge him
So she had been dead for a while meaning he had been bleeding out for that time… I’m guessing that this would/could imply that the bullet had managed to sauter/solder parts of what was bleeding but not completely… giving him more time but clearly not enough when officers don’t follow protocol 🙄

Now I understand that some animals/killers are first treated for injuries and then go to police etc. Maybe he would live normal life if they treated him quickly, maybe not, but not treating him first and just bring him for interrogation was .... Also this case is why you should put some gun laws in your country. This is literally the definition why that future law was placed. First reaction of Richi to get revenge for being kicked out is to get a gun and kill them. Bro the f.... is wrong with you all. Taking a life is the ultimate and final sin .... and to get from getting angry and THAT, to be the only choice or solution or whatever you call it, to be what you think you have to do.... Seriously, this has to be case on point or reference of why that future law is being put in place.
you can definitely blame the police for at least a part of this, even with the brain damage that had already been happening over the last 48 ish hours, that extra 8 ish hours still definitely made a difference. while the outcome would have probably still been the same for ryan, maybe had he got immediate medical attention more of his brain would have been saved (its obviously all hypothetical at this point since this all happened over 10 years ago). that extra 8 hours of his brain slowly degrading was still an extra 8 hours of degradation that shouldnt have been happening. they didnt even have any of the paramedics at the scene look at him. even if he did it or not, the fact he had any visible injury meant he should have been looked at by a paramedic and at least some of this could have been avoided. the detective doing the interrogation, and intake, literally anyone who interacted with him should have noticed something was not right before he got into that interrogation room.
"The police decided that he was more or less okay, though acting a little strange..." It was the end of December. If the injuries did not register, I would suspect carbon monoxide poisoning at the very least.
How do you blame the cops for the brain damage when he was shot 2 days before they made contact with him? bro was talking about the critical 8 hours that he didn't receive medical attention in but not the initial 48 hours.

Im like you aint gotta watch it w me! 😂
I did a term paper for this in my Famous Crimes and Trials college class. The story Mr. Ballen has told is now out of date. Most aspects of the case he discussed is true but some of it is not. Thankfully, the 'this is MONSTERS' channel did interviews with Ryan's dad and actually looked at case files. The police showed up to Ryan's house and knocked at the front door. No one answered so they went to the back. They peeked into the window and thought they saw a body. Police then gathered and tried to pick the lock before Ryan heard and then opened the back door. When Ryan opened the door, the group of police tackled him which is presumed to have cause more damage to his head. Richie's motive was different than the one stated in the video. Richie was the previous owner of the house. Richie and Ryan never lived together. Richie had previously been over to the house after Ryan moved in claiming he lost an iguana. That was when he saw Ryan had some valuable guitars and a nice computer. Richie and his father were trying to steal from Ryan the night of the incident. They successfully did so because those items have never been found since. Heather never knew Richie. The final thing is that police tried to cover up the case to make it seem like the damage done to Ryan's brain was not their fault but rather the fault of time. Police claimed that the crime happened on the 23rd of December but Ryan's father, Don, claims Ryaan had been helping him remodel his bathroom. The actual day the crime to place was the same day Ryan was arrested which was Christmas day. Cops even had the coroner change Heather's time of death to the 23rd after the coroner had logged it as the 25th already. So much shady shit happened with this case, and I hope that the actual story begins to spread more than the videos that have been posted before the documentary.
I know suing that police dept. would not bring their son back whole, but it could have helped them & Ryan in his life. The fact is they were very negligent at the very least. Anyone could see he was very injured and needed medical attention first, then you can interview a suspect. 6 hours? That is abuse......in pretty much ANY case in my opinion to sit in a car for that long. Even after realizing their mistake the officer seemed uncaring to me....just having him sit and wait on the ambulance rather than at least rendering some kind of help....if nothing more than kind words, and making him comfortable. This story just hurts my heart every time I watch a reaction to it.
Since the girl was shot, they should have looked for a weapon first I think. If he had one, look if it was used recently... but It's very bad luck in the end. Anyway, in case of a brain injury and espacially blood in the brain it's the first couple of hours that are critical, after 48 hours it was already too late for him, those 8 hours after he was found would have changed nothing in the end.
Wouldn't a diligent police officer gone around the back of the house first time. Look thru the glass door or poked his head in. Seen the blood/splatter or the bullet holes? What I've seen, most of the welfare checks. They go around the house. How did they miss that in the kitchen when they went in the second time? May they RIP.
So sad. I'm pretty sure the police get you medical attention, even if you're a suspect. They were definitely negligent. Yes, he was already losing significant time with those three days before the welfare check, but they had his head going when they showed up, put him in a cop car, them interrogated him.
Nah that same way you come to conclusions sir. And what the cop did was wrong in so many way. no excuse at all. and now you see? Because of the lack care the police gave to Ryan he suffering more 8 hours brain damage. And that make him suffer more then 10 year till he die. That's horrible so horrible and poor man
Hold on a minute, no offense, but why you shaking your head when you heard he was a "gun enthusiast"? Nothing wrong with liking guns. Maybe you heard that and assumed he ws going to be the bad guy in the situation?
I think people are going too hard on the police, this was a very unusual case. I mean, you see a guy who's alive and a girl whos dead and you're of course going to come to the conclusion that they're the killer. Say what you will but I really don't think those "critical 8 hours after he was found" would have made any difference for 2 main reasons. 1. He was already said to probably have been like that for TWO days, unable to remember or process anything that had happened and just kinda went about his day wandering the house or whatever and 2. When he answered the door and they found him he was already loopy and answering very weirdly. Either way I don't necessarily blame the police here because people DO try to lie and get out of something when they get caught, and honestly it did take me a while to guess something wasn't right after he started saying stuff like "bows and arrows" and "I meant revolver" when challenged and naming out some random people that was when I guessed something wasn't right. And that was around the time Dalton (that's how you spell his name?) figured out something might not have been right and then observed him and called an ambulance. Sure, you could blame someone or everyone in this situation but really could any of us done any better? Probably a question we can't answer and I think we should be a bit more graceful and understanding because like I said... this wasn't any normal homicide case and I really would've thought he was the killer at first because that's what the crime scene looked like at the time. It was just him and her in that house. I'll admit they could have given him medical attention at that point with that black eye but looking at that I wouldn't think anything was wrong with him except maybe some defensive wounds from the victim maybe. Like a bad punch to the eye for example. Either way, that was just a horrible crime and outcome for it. And all because the guy didnt want that Richie guy hittin' on his girl. Like who does that when they're doing you the favor of staying in your house? Like. Wow...
The fact is this all happened on the same day-the shooting and the welfare check. Don, Ryan’s dad did an interview on the UA-cam channel, this is Monster’s called Searching For Justice:The Ryan Waller Story. The facts Mr Ballen had were the facts from the media but they didn’t have the right facts.
'Could have given him the medical attention' rubs me the wrong way. He should have given medical attention. Everyone has the right to medical treatment, doesn't matter if you're innocent or guilt. That's why I don't agree with why we shouldn't be to hard on the police department.

It is very easy to throw judgement when you are not in someone's shoes.
@@Xeno_Solarus There are some actions that are easy to judge.
Regardless their was negligence they should’ve given him medical care it’s a human right period
This case shatters my heart each time I think about it.
This is absolutely crazy. Lost for words.
If you watch the whole video we stated that as well
it wouldnt have made a difference, so you can blame police for bad procedure but not for his brain damage. in the end, if they didnt show up at all, he probably would have died a few days later at home from infection and internal bleeding. so yeah you can blame them, but just not for the whole serious injury thing.
@@xXBlackIce7Xx I mean he had bullet holes in his face so they coulda done smth abt that had they actually looked 🤷♀️
@@KiddandCeeReactsYou can definitely blame them cause they proceeded to slam his face and on a table and broke his jaw thinking it was him
Without a warrant, the police couldn't knock down the door.
@Julie Williams Okay, that makes sense.
@Ambra Bridges Wow, that’s insane
I love y’all channel
The fact that it was a nose hole is crazy like i feel like you cant even miss it unless you actively put bias on the dude from the jump.
Thank you for your videos and all your hard work 🙂
Love how the police goes: "Holy shit Joe come see this shit! Oof holy shit Bob come see this shit"
There are those of us who watch people react to this video when we've already seen them & we're like, "Just wait until they find out the truth!"
The fact that the cops saw he had blood on him,did not check whose blood it was,did not notice 4 bulletholes and anterrogated him for hours as he kept explaining what happened in bits and pieces baffles me. What if bro just died during the interrogation from the bullets being in his haead
I look forward to these videos every 5-6 days.
This story made me tear up a little. I was thinking the same thing. Ow this kid I can’t listen to him but he was alive with 4 bullets in his head
Guy did they realize he got shot quadrupled
How do you not realize that someone’s been shot as a cop ? … can’t you recognize bullet holes?
So Sad R.I.P
Gun shot wounds dont heal to the point in two days. Police are trained to notice things like that.I disagree. Yes he had brain damage. But the point is suspect have rights too. It was made worse. Even if nothing could be done you still need to follow procedures. By law your suppose to take them to the hospital. Once cleared you go to jail or your interrogated. Not before. A medical professional needs to assess that not non medical people.
Agree, that was stated by one of us in the video.
Actually you can blame the cops because they should've gave him care regardless of the situation.
43:06-It's/police/protocol/to/treat/injuries/regardless/of/how/they/occurred.
I never saw ballen laugh before til now
Sorry, this just sucks because I could tell right away that his brain is actually going through different stages of trauma and I can’t stand that other people couldn’t notice this and reacted as if he was guilty until proven innocence.
It doesn’t matter who they are or what they did , you have to get them medical attention.
That poor baby :(
Well even if he was the suspect, why the f*ck wouldnt he be checked on by ambulance staff or something when he obviously was injured? Just really poorly handled by the police
First you have to proof he is the murder
but without any proof he is innocent and they have to give him medical care
So yes you can blame them
I agree with your comment one of the only ones that I saw that says basically your innocent until proven guilty which he wasn’t proven even Dalton said he couldn’t charge him
More prejudgment. We HAVE to do better!
This story is fcked up.
Peace from Holland 👊🏻
So she had been dead for a while meaning he had been bleeding out for that time… I’m guessing that this would/could imply that the bullet had managed to sauter/solder parts of what was bleeding but not completely… giving him more time but clearly not enough when officers don’t follow protocol 🙄
No no no, its protocol NO MATTER WHAT - They SHOULD have given him medical attention IMMEDIATELY!

Why wasnt ems lookin into dudes well being even if he is a "suspect"...where im from they cant wait to toss in a ambulance n take u to an er for a fender bender...n this dude sat in a squad car while they process the scene then another few hrs in a interagation room...hope he haunts their dreams
U two need to react on his latest video. Its insane crazy and you guys just have to watch it! Love you guys reacting really professionally. ♥
you can definitely blame the police for at least a part of this, even with the brain damage that had already been happening over the last 48 ish hours, that extra 8 ish hours still definitely made a difference. while the outcome would have probably still been the same for ryan, maybe had he got immediate medical attention more of his brain would have been saved (its obviously all hypothetical at this point since this all happened over 10 years ago). that extra 8 hours of his brain slowly degrading was still an extra 8 hours of degradation that shouldnt have been happening. they didnt even have any of the paramedics at the scene look at him. even if he did it or not, the fact he had any visible injury meant he should have been looked at by a paramedic and at least some of this could have been avoided. the detective doing the interrogation, and intake, literally anyone who interacted with him should have noticed something was not right before he got into that interrogation room.
"The police decided that he was more or less okay, though acting a little strange..."
It was the end of December. If the injuries did not register, I would suspect carbon monoxide poisoning at the very least.
How do you blame the cops for the brain damage when he was shot 2 days before they made contact with him? bro was talking about the critical 8 hours that he didn't receive medical attention in but not the initial 48 hours.
4:54 Police can only enter the house under limited circumstances without a warrant (4th amendment). If the father, for example, owned the house, he could give the o.k to boot the door if no one answered, or if there is exigent circumstances like screaming coming from the house or other indicators of immediate danger inside.

They seen she had passed for a few days and he was just there....Im aure they thought he was a monster and honestly most would. Like a pyschpath that didnt have any emotions that she was dead laying there and no care. At the time they wouldnt understand why he wasnt able to feel. Tradgic
I ve seen a few reactions and you guys were the best. I'm the same way trying to figure it out and conestantly coming up with different acenerio's my son be like cant u just watch it!
Can you post the link to the part about the crime taking place on the 25th?
Since the girl was shot, they should have looked for a weapon first I think. If he had one, look if it was used recently... but It's very bad luck in the end.
Anyway, in case of a brain injury and espacially blood in the brain it's the first couple of hours that are critical, after 48 hours it was already too late for him, those 8 hours after he was found would have changed nothing in the end.
44:25 kid u always get mad wen she don’t agree wit u
I actually don't
Hey guys could y’all react to mr ballens video This shopper was caught doing something evil. It’s just as tragic as this one
I just don’t understand how you don’t notice holes in someone’s face ??? like what ?
Nah that same way you come to conclusions sir. And what the cop did was wrong in so many way. no excuse at all. and now you see? Because of the lack care the police gave to Ryan he suffering more 8 hours brain damage. And that make him suffer more then 10 year till he die. That's horrible so horrible and poor man
His death was a guarantee before the cops even arrived at the scene just fyi. Total hindsight but…. It’s at least something
He died a decade later.
Yup, reaching! Don’t feel bad everyone who sees this will reach!
Fam i lost my other page , i still trying to shake back i lost all my videos and all 90 of my subscribers 🤣frfr but I'm back same nigga new page 💪💪🤣🤣💯
He didn’t lie I did In fact ask myself how did they miss that
No they cannot they have to have just cause like screaming or blood visible
Please react to hap hap happy friends tree
Hold on a minute, no offense, but why you shaking your head when you heard he was a "gun enthusiast"? Nothing wrong with liking guns. Maybe you heard that and assumed he ws going to be the bad guy in the situation?
god I'm glad you two aren't cop's you got it so wrong 🥺
So what does that say about the many cops that we have that get it wrong as well?
I think they were on drugs
Better transfer these investigators to the Texas police department
I think people are going too hard on the police, this was a very unusual case. I mean, you see a guy who's alive and a girl whos dead and you're of course going to come to the conclusion that they're the killer. Say what you will but I really don't think those "critical 8 hours after he was found" would have made any difference for 2 main reasons.
1. He was already said to probably have been like that for TWO days, unable to remember or process anything that had happened and just kinda went about his day wandering the house or whatever and
@@LisaD-1969 Huh... Im not sure what you mean
'Could have given him the medical attention' rubs me the wrong way. He should have given medical attention. Everyone has the right to medical treatment, doesn't matter if you're innocent or guilt. That's why I don't agree with why we shouldn't be to hard on the police department.
