Holy Cow Matt - I'm so glad that we are all different. I'm like the great Steve McCurry - where he says he was so glad to see the back of film and has no nostalgic feelings to ever go back (amen). I shot for a couple of decades with it in Sydney, shooting for Austral International Press Agency, (now Australscope), - it was such a pain in the neck. Digital is so liberating and I just love the images from my Nikon Z cameras. When you print the images they look truly gorgeous. I enjoyed my cameras back then because I loved the images I had published everywhere, and the work it gave me. However, now I shoot digital, I kiss my cameras because I love photography so much more. If I had to shoot wretched film, I'd give up photography. Also, one roll of 35mm, 36 ex, here in Australia is 50 bucks for the roll and a total of $70, after scanning. I shoot on an average of over a thousand images when I cover an event. If you had to divide that by 36 images - that's nearly 30 rolls. I'd go broke on the first job. I'm glad we are all different. Though I don't shoot Leica or film, keep up the great work Matt because I still get so much inspiration from your clips.

The truthful perspective of a veteran shooter who's been doing this for a few decades. I mostly agree with this sentiment, and I can recall back in the film era of the late '80s when prescient photographers were anticipating the coming digital age, and along with it better quality, better consistency, immediacy of confirmation, no more changing film stocks, etc, etc, etc. I share the romanticism of shooting on film (although I think it may have more to do with the romanticism of shooting on those wonderful film *cameras* we used to have, more than the actual film itself)...but the reality is that the "magic" of film probably has more to do with nostalgia, I think, than any inherent aesthetic benefit.

You have the divided personality, chartered accountant on one side and artist on the other and seeming harmony rather than conflict. So you can present your art and skill logically and simply. Bravo. Yes, sometimes a new "toy" can spring us out of the doldrums. I was out last night with an old "toy" an A7M III + 24 - 240 that sparked my interest. Tonight with the X2D + 120 f/3.5 to get some night stuff. Black can add to a shot. I see folks who are really good, like you, work black very well. Thanks for another good one. Cheers.

I shoot digital when my family is with me and things need to happen fast ... "Come on lets go". I shoot film for my mental health after a stressfull working day to come down.
Yes if I had a normal life and had kids etc to shoot i'd likely be the same. I thought you were going to say shoot film to recover from the stressful shooting moving kids shots :) Totally agree that shooting slower paced film in a quiet environment is very relaxing.
My film-to-digital camera ratio is 23-2 (not counting the camera for work, indeed). I always bring 2 cameras with me, a simple, slow but very fun Fuji X100S and my trusty Nikon FE (I develop and print at home as well). This choice for daily carries was distilled after many, many other combinations. You, sir, remind me to appreciate it all, cheers!
23-2 is a great ratio.. yes the FE series cameras are great. I love my FE2 (and others)
Many thanks for this video where you explain the distribution of your camera types and work, and its rationale. I fully understand the sensorial experience of analogue photography and the additional senses that are involved in film photography: touch and hearing.
I would like to make two questions.
Q1: Could you please explain the paid-by-photos approach you have adopted when you have photo sessions with Models? What kind of photos do they request?
Q2: From a very specialized film photographer that you are, don’t Models also ask for printed photographs, made from your own hands? I believe Models can have digital versions from many photographers at any time, but there are scarce chances of having analogue “hand-made” versions of them.
Thanks David, Q1 - it's not as strict as it sounds. In the model world it's called "TFP" time for print, they give you their time, we give them photos in exchange. I'm just unusual that I give models all photos instead of 3-10 photos like many do). Often better models will want paying but if your photos are good you can work a deal (as I work). Q2 - they could but they don't. They probably don't realise how much time a wet print would take so I'd say no anyway purely due to time (and not wanting the commitment). Models want online fame not prints. Now I have a darkroom I like the idea that I can give model friends a print at a later date if I want to but I rather it be a surprise not expected. (Time is always my limit for everything I do).
I prefer film as well. I use the digital Leica sometimes though, but not that often. The M4 and the M6 just feel right in my hand..
Nice, yes digital has it's place but if I only did personal work mine wouldn't get much use.
i love to have the option for the "easy" digital point and shoot. but shooting film is a completely different experience. i want to be forced to slow down. i want to take time to check the light, composition, framing etc. and al this makes me by the way better if shooting digital in my opinion.

Why I prefer analogue to digital photography.
I like the distance involved in the process until you see the result and the surprise.

I like the handling.
Why I prefer 4x5 (or larger) or even 6x6 (half) to KB.
I appreciate the distance with which you have to look at the picture before you take it. The process produces critical thinking.
With KB you get the image directly into your "brain"
Pinhole cameras are also very exciting.
I have made some "holes" on brass plates myself with tiny milling cutters and they fit on the Sinar and the Arca Swiss.
Have you ever tried pins?

every shot is unique.
Normally you photograph things that don't move but are staggered in depth in order to maintain a constant (un)sharpness over the whole picture.
Or a mix, like flowing water in an otherwise still landscape
That's quite simple.
It becomes more difficult with moving things as the main subject, such as portraits, fashion, lingerie, nudes
You can't stand still for 8 to 40 seconds and keep your gaze steady. (Depending on the hole size, film speed and extension
Even the breath "moves".
The model told me during a portrait shoot:
"Yes mr2, I can't be any more immobile, you'll have to tie me down".
No sooner said than done.
That was the beginning of my bondage photography.
Awesome as always Matt. I shoot digitally for work newspapers etc, love it canon gear faultless. For my own stuff I love the Q2, and other digitals like Nikon, fuji, I shot film before digital was a thing so just for channel content I tried an old film camera, that was stupid because now I've become insane scouring flea markets and auctions sites for old gear to try I love the challenge of it. My latest find in a Canon L3, just awaiting a leica 5cm collapsible arriving then I;m into it, loving the feel of the L# very nice, I watched your review of it a few times.......I gotta stop watching your vids, I'm collecting cameras but going without food haha
Ha thanks Paul. Yes the L3 is great and yes the GAS danger is real. I'm old enough that I should own a house by now but because of my many cameras I'm still renting. Can't afford both but I enjoy life as it is currently so not all bad.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom mate do what ya do to keep you happy. Your model photography is outstanding, likewise your knowledge and tutorials. I've always been a bit of a camera collector, but only in so far as when I upgrade I don't get shut of the old one so I've got a few knocking around, personally half of the fun is trying to get a half decent shot from old tech, it's pretty addictive haha.

Film helps you to be more disciplined. You can't shoot 8 shots to get one usable checking each digital shot.
I used to use a small digital to check out locations to see if it was worth shooting it on film. Saves lots of money.
In years past, the best part of any week was going to the film lab to see what you got that weekI have to say, with that stocking hat and gkasses, you bear a striking resemblance to Waldo of where's Waldo fame.LOL!

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom okay but the problem is when you scan the negative it’s difficult to obtain good resolution from scan and colour correction is not easy. Can you do video on this topic for colour film photography to scanning at home. I have the plustek opticfilm AI film scanner

I do prefer film, but its way to expensive now. Especially slide film. Amd that's before we talk about processing and scanning.
Film cameras are also better than digital for the most part. I used to own a few Barnack Leicas and they are just magic. So are the Nikon F pro bodies. Shame that the film isn't as affordable as the cameras.
Slide yes for sure, B&W can be affordable if Dev and scan at home.. and yes to cameras being better!

Quick answer, sadly not. It will depend on so many variables. (I've taught full day 8hr workshops just helping people with exposure). Shoot digital, get it right, then repeat on film. (to start with)
Just got my Horseman 6x7 back for the intrepid camera, waiting for a better lens (Fuji 150mm) cannot t wait to start developing again Medium & large format ,but took my M240 up London for the first shoot and was amazed at the results also regret selling my Hasselblad 501c very sad

some of the longer focal lengths go crazy cheap in mint condition on ebay. I scored a 300mm for a mamiya 645, a 250mm for bronica etr and a 200mm for my gs-1 last year. Didn't pay more than 120 usd for each lens. the gs-1 lens came with an extension tube. score!
i'm having fun with all the new developers on the market. 510 pyro, flic's version of pc-tea and hc110 clones.
Yes! Longer lenses are cheaper for Leica R too. Kodak developers are back soon. I can't wait to get back to Xtol! (Still need to try Pyro)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom one good thing about pyro is it turned me on to alkaline fix and ilford agitation. Cutting my wash time and not having to use hypoclear makes life a little easier.

Looking to maybe add a leica m8 to my sl2-s or just replace the sl with it to scratch my film look itch. Since you’ve used them before would you say the M8 is alright for that job? I’d really like to avoid having to find an M6 and then constantly buying film and paying for development
Yes the M8/M9 is the next best thing to film. M8 for B&W but be aware of the crop, M9 for FF + colour too.

Thanks haha, most people think gear that watch my videos (as I review quite a lot) so I felt I needed to explain but yes as you say it's the picture that's important. Once I know what makes those photos I like I'm happy. For me it's old horse and buggy style!
It’s a cost and convenience thing but film certainly has its place and time for the “look”. In my case the colour grading has been perfected by the film company.
Thanks, I always struggle with the colours from C41 film but slide film I love (my colours I mean, and trying to decide what is the "right" colour after scanning. That helps me stick to B&W!

Personally I love using old lenses on digital cameras. Film is so expensive these days but I can get a similar "vintage" look with old lenses on a Sony A7 IV.
Yes fair point, me too for my portraits. It's definitely the best hack to get more interesting photos from a digital sensor.
Just a thought. Maybe if you can find some crappy lenses, do a photoshoot with them. Might be a fun project to see if you can push a bad lens. Anyways, not even a Leica user (too poor) but love your work. Keep it up Matt!@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom

People, a lot of this is getting silly. If you enjoy using a film camera, just accept that you enjoy using a film camera, but don’t make up a lot of fictitious rationalizations for it. Film isn’t more “artistic” or “magical” than digital any more than oil pastels are more “artistic” or “magical” than watercolor or vice-versa; they're just different media. If you digitize your analog images so you can share them online, they're now digital images, and digitally-originated images could be transformed mathematically to look just like them if that’s what the creator wants to do. If you need to “slow down” or “have more discipline” in your work practice, you should be able to do that by training your mental habits rather than buying stuff. And if you care about your subjects (vs. just caring about your photos) then presumably you want to begin your creative process with the most faithful record of your subject possible, and a good digital capture is always more faithful because there's less generational loss. I enjoy making the occasional film photo as much as anyone, but the whole “film mystique” is just a set of stories we tell ourselves to make ourselves feel different and special in an age when it seems almost everyone is a photographer and a depressing number of them are pretty good at it. I know this won't be a popular viewpoint, but sorry not sorry…
Thanks James, I know you're from the film era (proper) so can see through the modern jargon and romance attached to film. I guess like with some people that prefer vinyl to CD, it's worse but it's better if that makes sense. You can't argue that digital makes it way to easy (and therefore boring) and there is little new to learn about cameras that way. (Not for everyone I know..I just like learning).. To correct your point, "make a faithful representation" absolutely NOT! With every photo I aim to way surpass the beauty of the actual reality.. I shoot models as you know and the photos they like are when they look better than reality ("It's magic, how did you do that and make me look so good?").. the same is true for flowers or even with a street scene, try to make it somehow cooler or more painterly (call it what you want) that boring reality. I can use an iPhone and get near perfect reality shots.. (or Leica).. hence I don't buy the best SL lenses to get this I instead use old lenses (etc) to avoid it (and add swirl or whatever). I know we're friends but I also disagree on scanned film is like digital. It's not, film is much nicer for model shoots with the rendering (and softness) for my taste. I enjoy editing film scans, I hate fixing crappy skin in a digital image if you can see every imperfection.
..I do appreciate you being different and speaking out though.. it makes me double think what I said and opens up the topic for debate. I guess like with many things in life, sometimes it's nice to like different things to others, it keeps life interesting. (If everyone preferred blondes it wouldn't be much fun for brunettes!) :)
Furthermore I would like to ad two advantages for digital and there are many more. Have you tried developing and printing colour pictures yourself? Expensive and chemical process. Then from an environmental point of view digital is far better. Black and white developing and printing is not that complicated. But I love your videos!
I love my M9 cameras as you mentioned. But for advertisement work I need more megapixels and a way faster workflow. And also good Video performance. On top the client shootings are often complicated enough, so I use a easy to handle Canon camera system for work.

Great video. I grew up on film. All we had was film. All my commercial work was film. I still have some film cameras (all Leica's and my Hasselblad) Sold my Sinar's. I rarely shoot film anymore. I pretty much only shoot my digital Leica's. Not because they are easy, because they are so good. I shoot them as if I had film in them. Everything manual. I print my work as well. Generally my prints are 24"x36" or 40"x60" .My cameras are the tools for my vision. I do think it is great that the younger generations are exploring film.

I love digital! It's faster, better quality, repeatable results, esp. in color! It costs way less! If you don't NEED? new cameras and lenses! Rats on that! Yesterday shooting a Religious event, shot 160+ exposures! A SD card $8, holds 10,000 images. I can safely shoot color! No scanning, no lab fees, no BS. Sure I shoot film sometimes! I still have BW film in stock! Oh! Many of my digital from 2004! This is the wrong place, to say this! Gear,Gear,gear!
Ha thanks Jason! Nothing wrong with digital. Both have their advantages. I just like film for my workflow/ style of photos.
Of my film vs digital collection - 100% film. No digital cameras any longer except for my phone. I'm no pro though, so can just indulge my hobby. Also cool that you're starting to wet print. It's the next "level" to the analog process and the printed results to me are so much better than a scan and digital print.

Analog is a more tacttile process, the whole process makes you bond with your photos. Might make sense if you make as many photos as you do Matt, the analog ones will evoke more feelings for you. Also I just prefer looking more at a well crafted dark room print than a kick ass LR edit, although they can ofcourse look captivating too.

I have not been using my Leica M6 and Nikon FM for many years. I was interested in dark room techniques and looking at color slides from a projector back in the 80’s.

See MrLeica.com - I just copied them into a spreadsheet and made a chart. I have sold a few so 90 is maybe more accurate. (They double as my pension plan/ instead of a house)

Haha, most of the are older models so I got them at a fraction of the price, the M10 is newer but it has a damaged leather so again I got it cheaper. (I don't own a house/tv/ normal stuff just cameras instead!) :)
Matt : Hello , yes , digital for the quick and dirty , is a must. Film is for the Love and Art.... I am agonizing over a M11 Monochrome , or the Leica SL3 , missed the trip to Japan , it seems so I will pay myself again with a good camera or rare lens. Good video. Why Film ; it is magic , and has a grain or organic feel a tangibility that digital lacks , and for myself , just me .... my Rollie , Crown Graphic EBONY or Leica M's .... it just gives a richer deeper experience. What a load of trendy justification. I’ve shot 60,000 rolls/sheets of film but don’t have a darkroom anymore, so no darkroom means I’m not involved any more than digital. Process and print yourself or you’re an imposter. Scan to tweet and output ruins the analog process. And it’s Rollei.
Shoot manual everything on a Leica digital and there’s no missing experience.
I have them both. Amazing cameras. I have been very surprised at how much of an upgrade the SL3 is over my SL2. The files are amazing and the new menus and color are so good. I struggled with the M11 and the color. The SL3 is amazing, plus the image stabilization really helps me shoot at the slower shutter speeds which I could not with the M11. The high ISO form the new SL3 is pretty amazing as well. Almost as good as the M10M which really surprised me.

It's just two different worlds, when I'm out and about I always take two cams with me, sometimes even three But both, whether on film or digital, decelerated photography is easy, but with analogue you think about whether the motif is worth it.👌 I even go so far as to shoot the same thing digitally and analogue to have a comparison In this day and age, everything is so fast-paced so you should also reflect on the old days. And you never stop learning. The whole of life is a learning process, just like photography. Stay healthy. 👌

I agree with you regarding the feel of M cameras. Although I have so many digital cameras from Nikon, Canon and Olympus the experience of photography with my Leica TYP M240 is highly satisfying and is the closest that I have come to the feel of using my M2, M3 or M6. My Nikon and Canon film cameras also have a great feel, but they are different to using an M. I guess, it is because that with even a digital M, I as a photogrpaher, still have to do most of the wok and make most of the decisions.
Yes I think regardless of what people say about Leica they get it right when it comes to cameras you want to use.
And for some, coming across a great bargain on a used film camera is motivation to go out and take pics.
Film testing for the first time is exciting since you don't really know what you're going to get and how the shooting experience will go. It's always thrilling holding the film up to the light for the first time after pulling it out of the developing tank not knowing for sure what you'll get. And when you get some really good pics with a bargain camera it's that much more fun when the results exceed expectations!
Yes 100%! It's almost more cool if you get great photos from cheap unloved vintage cameras!

I still have my Nikon D850 and Fuji X-T4. I love both camera's but I also agree with you. When I shoot with my 1952 Leica IIIf, or my Voightlander Bessa II 6x9 there's an extra degree of both planning for the shot and the excitement of what I will get back after I click the shutter. I can honestly say the I think my 1951 Bessa II with the color skopar 105mm out performs both my digital cameras - I shot with Kodak Ektachrome E100 last weekend and I was completely blown away with the results. I consider the 1950's to be the golden age for film photography - so many different camera types hitting the markets, especially for medium format. It's great to browse through ebay or etsy and see so many vintage camera's for sale. I'm just starting to enjoy 6x9 medium format - the next step may be 4x5 large format - I'll be keeping a keen eye on your channel to watch your progress in the 4x5 world -so far you've done really good.
Thanks Steve, yes the Skopar lens on the old cameras is one of the best (the same lens as on my Perkeo 2). You can get amazing results with it. I have a 6x9 folder but not as good as that one. It is nice and Tony though - Agfa Billy Record 2

But then you negate the whole film experience and outcome by digitising film, they are pixels !!. A darkroom print is totally unique and no matter how you perfect your darkroom process you cannot reproduce and film/darkroom print.

Despite the hassle I prefer film scans to digital for the less perfect look / better skin look! :)
I’m dyyng to go back to the darkroom. Nothing compares to the silver light magic of the actual paper print. Probably #1 project for the next life. With a cat able to stop meowing like an ambulance siren to enter the darkroom, no, get out, no, enter…
