Hers is a voice that is immediately distinctive, whether in a Tyagaraja composition, Surdas bhajan, Marathi bhav geet or a film song, with its unique timbre, feel and range. This is the voice of Bombay Jayashri, a singer who has performed widely and successfully across genres - Carnatic music, Indian film playback singing, semi-classical music, fusion and more.
Her music is as cosmopolitan as it gets, her own instinctive leanings helped greatly by her mother and her mentor Lalgudi Jayaraman, both of who nudged her towards an openness for and appreciation of everything melodious and beautiful.
In this episode, Jayashri describes her mother’s singular focus on grooming her into a performer, the ‘Bombay-ness’ of her growing up years, the intense training under violin maestro Lalgudi Jayaraman and the ebb and flow of a remarkable journey that led her through several cities, teachers and genres of music.
Notes to Myself is one of MOPA's flagship projects - a series of interactive, expository documentaries that deconstructs the lives and creative processes of some of the most impactful professionals associated with South India's performing arts. Done in a let-your-hair-down and from-the-heart way, these offer an honest, moving and at times funny and charmingly unguarded look at the lives of these artistes.

Never seen an interview like this. She paints pictures through words and invites all the viewers of this interview to re-live her experiences. How fabulous is that!!! ❤❤❤
Plus she is a beautiful soul..so humble, knowledgeable, honest, open minded, candid, beautiful and much much more ❤
I was a fan of your singing before watching this interview and now I'm a huge fan of the phenomenon called "Bombay Jayashri". Thanks for everything ma'am 🙏🙏🙏
The entire interview is like a poem ..Beautiful
Her life is like a beautiful movie❤
To hear someone talking about Lalgudi is enough.
She is my most favorite singer. I can't live without listening to her songs each day morning and night. God bless you with many more awards and endeavours.
Thanks MOPA. This is just precious. She is not just a great musician. She is a fantastic story teller. Please do more such interviews.
Her calm is reflective of her immense knowledge. Thanks, MOPA, for sharing this beautiful conversation. I loved the format, so calming and blissful❤
Like in her music, she has the ability to articulate things in a simple yet deep manner. Enjoyed watching this.
I somehow watch this whenever I m down...very inspiring at the same time it hits my mind I m no where in this world...I need to learn more and more... ❤️Jayashree Amma was not my choice in childhood as I listened her cine songs...but after hearing just one carnatic I fell deep into the black hole...lost in magical voice and that addiction cannot be got ridden...
The loss of existence I felt when she sung piraye piraye in this video....
Thank you God for making me a fellow human in a place where I get to listen to these treasures of legends ❤️...God bless you all
Am from srilanka i really like jayashri mam
I love her dressing and her pottu accessory and her beautiful voice
I trying to come india i really want to meet her and she is beautifulll
1 hour and 25min duration felt like just few seconds. Blessed soul. Music is magical. Thanks to the makers of the video.
...there's just a treasure trove behind every "someone" out there! very beautifully narrated....
Even when she speaks there is music !, thalam, swaram ,sruthi ….. every word of her is so soothing.. we are blessed to hear you M’am .. simple down to earth person 🙏🙏💐
An amazing artist, a very humble human! Very blessed to have attended Jayshri’s live concerts in USA.
She remains one of my inspirations!🙏
Very natural to know about Bombay Jayashri journey of musical life . It brought back memories of my life with music,, my mother as music teacher at home always with classes, students, how she planted roots of music in me , which I’m a music teacher and performer today . In 1993, still remember her concert at BG, I spoke to her behind the stage. She responded to my letter , which still preserve as a treasure . Always admire her sweet, divine, dedicated , perfect voice . In 2019 in chennai, had opportunity to watch her sing sitting in Dias , as it was fully crowded . It was bliss 🙏🙏🙏🙏
What a wonderful self reflection. 85 minutes went by in a jiffy. So many take aways there. The gradual progression in learning, being open to various styles of music, the guru-bhakthi, lessons (besides singing) learnt from Lalgudi maestro - listened with rapt attention. Hoping for a concert in Kerala (Tvm would be nice) in the near future.
What an amazing interview....lucid and honest, straight from the heart ❤️
My appreciation for this legend has skyrocketed after this interview.
Such a beautiful experience listening to her. Very honest and from the heart & I felt that I was sitting across her on a sofa & chatting with her. Not one dull moment & I can't believe that I listened to the entire episode of nearly 85 minutes in one shot . Congratulations to the entire team involved in producing this. Looking forward to the next episode.
Straight from the heart ❤️ Sheer delight to listen to you ...🌷
The way you brought back memories is pleasantly quiet with a scenic rhythm in expression!
I felt like going on a journey with Jayashri, calm and soothing and authentic. Just like her music. Loved it
The way she narrates she makes us live of all those events. This is enriching in many ways.
So articulate.. sounds musical even when speaking.. wonderful listening to this musical journey
What a gifted storyteller!! I could see everything right down to the cup of hot Bournvita being placed beside them. 😊
The best thing I’ve seen on UA-cam for a while now! Incredible production too! Thank you Mopa for this amazing series! 😍

What a beautiful note! I just didn’t want this interview to end.
Madam, you have narrated your journey of music vividly. Apart from your talent in music, you have excellent communication skill and memory. You could recall all the incidents so well.
Goodness Gracious! Awesome presentation.
I have always been a fan of her voice, it has always given me solace like a mother's sparsham (touch). It's so soul-drenching to listen to the beautiful journey that made her what she is now.
Thank you MOPA for this!!
Happy to know more about one of my favorite singer, Bombay Jeyashri mam through her own voice.
Lovely interview of your journey. Listeners choice by Bombay Jayashri was my first memory of the cassettes. We used to listen to Koovi azhaikka koodadha, Sree ganesha charanam on a loop. (With rewind and play).
What a generous offering from the beautiful team of people behind this documentary. Each and every word was like pure nectar and I immersed myself for 1.5 hours completely, like how Jayshri mam spoke of her time with her Guru 🙏🏻 thank you for the wonderful initiative team ❤️❤️❤️
I adore her. She is feminine and graceful. Namaste
Both her music and reflections are meditative.
Jayshree maam speaks about being 'drenched in Sri. Lalgudi Jayaraman's music' in that memorable BBY concert. What can I say! My soul’s just drenched by the beauty of her narration of memories. There is innate music in her story telling, pauses, gestures and personality. A superb episode by MOPA. Thank you!
Amazing choice of words Every word expressed your passion for Music You breathed music
She should write books- her descriptions are so vivid. The perfect interviewee...no need for any embellishment - she is the art itself. Beauty and femininity embodied.
Wonnnnnderful....it was such a mesmerizing journey down her memory lane. It felt as if I was t witnessing each n every facet which BJ ma'am was putting it across to us. Ma'am I really wonder n I simply afore n idolise how your voice resonates so so much of music n perfect tonality even while you speak. It's so endearing., so pure n organic and so beautifully put in words those enlivening moments of your life. I just didn't want it to stop. I sincerely request more of it.... To listen to you speak in itself is an experience of sorts..... inexplicable. I just adore you n your voice n your personality 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙇🙇🙇🙇🙇🙇I truly felt... even u have gone what alll of us go through during our growing up yrs.
Absolutely brilliant narration of the recollection of how the artist becomes the music
Amazing story teller too. 🙏🙏
Fantastic Madam Bombay Jayashri madam giving your life sketch so frankly. Indeed I was immersed in whatever you presented. What a philosophical touch towards the end. We Immensely thank you for all.
Beautiful 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Such a seamless flow of memories. Thanks a lot for bringing this
Legendary singer's gratitude and vivid account of each milestone she reached shows her critical reflection and so her journey is so much empowering to those learning any form of music.
I particularly applaud her earnest deeply felt wish to transform the way musical education is imparted to young kids as early as 7 years of age. I sincerely hope a consortium takes birth to transform singer's wish to realty creating a carnatic music curriculum that is relevant and accessible by many more instead of making it reserved for the elite and well-to-do from certain sections of India.
Please transform this to be an audiobook as others point out or host it on global outlets such as Netflix or Amazon prime or NPR or a discussion material for highschool music class among international students.
Singer embodies "Learning gives humility".
God bless this sakala kala valli with best health, inner peace who is going to be the karpaga vruksham.
Tamizh thaye ungalukku vanakkam.
Your experience is as sweet as your voice. I am so involved in your interview that i forgot everything around me. madam. such a divine voice I love it.
Amazing memoirs told ,tku mam,
God be with you all
Stay Safe Stay Healthy
Hearing you itself is music! What an experience! Nostalgia
Jayashree, listening to this episode was like a time travel with you. You are fantastic story teller as well. Wonderful, well articulated, vivid memories.
Poetic recollection 💝
I liked particularly the 'Retaliation' part, about possibility of not meeting Guru's expectations, your methods of teaching, the Film music part and 'Life of Pi'. Well done BJ. Hope the Nation will one day confer you with Bharat Ratna award. You would have earned it.
Lovely ma. You took me to those years in Bombay when I used learn music from Mami. Your mom. 👍🙏👆👌💕
Completely enjoyed ma. 👍💕
Beautiful Musical Journey! So pure, simple, rustic, divine and beautiful!
No words can thank this effort and event..whosoever has made slightest efforts in this pack,,indeed so u are greatly to be honoured...bcoz bringing to the eyes of ignorants such light has inexplicable initiation...Is there a chance of seeing Mam Shobana Chandrakumar pillai innthis series..its a personal request.

Absolutely beautiful
Sooperb u just can't stop.listening
Flood of memories....I used to get down at Matunga every month on salary day to pick up couple of cassettes (one of course will be Jayashree mam's. ). Sometime disappointed not finding any new and at times over priced one on the shelf.... But when I think of Bombay, one memory which is still alive is listening to those cassettes....
Also it stirred the smell of those lanes with flower, incense and coffee.....
Brilliantly portrayed. 🙏
Listing to Jayshree ma'am is pure bliss ! The way of telling her experiences as a beautiful lullaby is beautiful! This is a great initiative! As a music lover, I learned a lot from this interview
Absolute Joy to listen to every word she speaks 🙏🏽👌🏽
She is an amazing singer and now I love her personality more:) Thank you MOPA!
incredible journey 🤩,love the way you express
It's an absolute joy nor only to hear you singing but also your talk, your journey, your anecdotes, and when you recall your transformation, I could visualize everything, like always take a bow 🙇♀️ mam, whether it is singing or talking about it..its just an enriching experience
So happy to listen to this interview. Thank you MOPA for this. And I am so thankful and grateful to Jayashri amma for recognizing that carnatic music might reach more people if taught differently. This I say, because my family was devoted to carnatic music and tried to instill it in me when I was in 3rd/4th grade. It made no sense to me back then and I was politely asked my then paatu mami to not come to class. I am 31 now and love listening to renditions by many and even attempt to sing a few, but this love only began after an exposure to songs like Jagadhodharana or Rangapurvihara by MSS amma. I hope many others also recognise this and begin to think differently.
Erudite and humble
🙏my respect
The musical journey of yours, you have carried us along with you. Hope like me so many rasikas would have travelled with you. Awesome notes.
Awesome 👏🏻! Such a wonderful interview!!
❤
Loved it 😍
She described literally the opposite of my life but I was captivated nonetheless. Such a peaceful, unhurried expression of ideas and memories. And such dedication to art. Thoroughly enjoyed this episode.
I can say even the way she narrates is a musical melody the way she sings. So clear, deep, soft, emotional and appropriate words to express the feeling so clearly, similar to the right notes to capture the essence of raga when she sings. May God bless her with more accolades and a very happy musical and artistic journey for several years to come.
Thanks for doing this.. beautiful!!! why wasnt narumugaye song mentioned? that was the first time i knew about her.. i remeber listening to it and thinking who is the singer? iruvar audio cassette had all the lyrics in it
Very humble human being and the whole interview was just bliss ✨ It was as if she was reciting poem.
Grace personified. 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Such a soothing personality with such simplicity and humility.
Have always enjoyed listening to your renditions. Takes one to a very meditative experience.
Namaskaram and regards.
Sujata from Munch and Mull 🙏🙏🙏
Such humility, grace, elegance, poise and composure..... I want to be Bombay Jayashri when I grow up. :) I always enjoyed her songs in movies and her rendition of Bharathiyar songs are amazing... Now I'll check out the Carnatic songs too...Mopa, Thanks for the amazing interview... And thank you, Jayashri akka for sharing your life with us. You are very inspiring.
It was such a pleasure listening to this ...I had the pleasure of listening to a concert live in kuwait , a small crowd of music lovers, it was a most spiritual and enlightening experience , one could sense the deep spiritual plane in which Jayashri madam was dwelling upon. The frankness and a deep spiritual disposition is clearly made out.
This entire series is like a wonderful ballad which I can listen to any day and everyday. Thank you for this incredible work ❤️
Someone said autobiography is an unrivaled vehicle for telling the truth about other people. How true! From your notes, the viewers could know a lot about your Gurus including the Legendary Lalgudi Sir. About your mother, father. About Matunga of those times. About Madras. And you, the individual. Your own concerts of those younger days. How a TV relay made you a well-known artist. Mind boggling. Thank you for this golden opportunity.
This is so well done. I feel like this is all about devotion. It has the same calming effect. And the old world charm - all packed into one.
Hats off to this very idea that brings us close to such artists... I had the opportunity to listen to her twice in coimbatore. After the interview it feels like she need not sing, just listening to her speak is so melodious ..... 🙏
I can listen to her for hours!!!!!!
One of the most beautiful Note I have ever heard & enjoyed every word...God bless & hope to meet you someday
What an episode. Blessed to see and hear this whole journey 💕🙏
Eloquent !
Such a lovely story Jayashree. It is fascinating like listening to a great story. Amazing what a good communicator you are.
Lots of new info about BJ that I did not know. Tnx. However, the sound seemed feeble. Checked with a couple of others. They too felt the video sound was way too soft. That requires straining one's ears to listen to a rich sharing. The subtitles came in handy but I would still have preferred BJ's voice sounding loud and clear like in a concert.
I fell in love with her renderings during Cassette yuga. She has been always awe some
Was like listening to a story... 😍😍 The narration of going to classes, describing the streets.. Could see those imageries in front of the eyes... 🤩🤩 Heart soothing conversation.. ❤❤
Beautiful notes. I had the habit of hearing cassettes while traveling in local trains. Once I got a cassette of Jaisree and was hearing in train. When I heard her song on Ranjani Raga in the cassette tears were flowing down my cheeks, literally sobbing down. Her music literally moves me. Not only her music, the way she speaks is so musical. God bless

Legend and so musical listening to her. Thanks for this amazing interview
A brilliant recaps of her association with Lalgudi Jayaraman. It is as good as her scintilating voice.
Your narration has music, poetry and a very very endearing flavour to it. Such complex ideas so neatly brought out...exquisite and an absolute delight and enriching experience to have watched this.
What an extraordinarily beautiful self reflection....loved it and how aesthetically crafted!
Always been an admirer of your voice and singing. So glad to find your personality also matching the class of your singing. Hats off to you!
