- Hi Folks! i got this used preowned xmaxx for a great price. i couldnt say no. Its the nr 1 truck on my rc truck list i wanted to own :D
but buying a new one, i would never be able to afford it.
and WOW its awesome! already busted 2 lower arms ,lost pinion gear on first run. it already had some body damage. and damage to the shocks. i didnt care we HAVE A TRAXXAS XMAXX YEAHH!

Each time the pinion comes loose it rounds the motors D shaft more and more. It will come loose more and more to where, in short order, you will not be able to get through a full set of charged batteries. One of the issues is that the center hole of the Traxxas pinion is round. So basically all of the rotational torque as well as gear walking is all on that TINY grub screw. ARRMA makes a gear that I am currently trying in my X-Maxx. It's part number ARA310965 18T Mod1 Safe-D5 Pinion Gear and it has a D shaped hole that matches the motor shaft. I had to remove my motor and use my dremel tool with a cutting disc to extend the D shaft cut about 1/8 of an inch further so the gear would slide on and mesh well with the stock spur. I figured that this would reduce the stress on the grub screw to one function. Keeping the gear from walking. The D shaped hole in the new pinion gear would absorb the rotational torque. I used blue loctite on it's grub screw and ran a full set of batteries through it. I figured it was fixed but on my second set of batteries, the motor whizzed away with no movement 15 minutes in. The Gear having a D shape was still being driven by the motor but it walked to touching the cover and was completely clearing the spur gear. Next I drilled a tiny divot in the flat spot of the motors D shaft where the grub seated so the grub screw would extend down into the drilled shaft. Even if it came loose it couldn't walk and the D shaft hole in the pinion would keep it locked to the motor shaft. That worked but after a second set of batteries, the gear was noticeably wobbly on the motor shaft. It stayed on the motor and didn't fail while driving....yet. I didn't like the idea that it was rocking on the motor shaft, so this time I said screw it and used Red Loctite 271 as a final way of keeping it from walking. As a 3rd failsafe, I glued a metal bushing to the backside of the plastic pinion cover where the gear would rub when it came loose. If the grub fails while driving, the cover would keep the gear from walking away from the spur teeth and the D shape hole will keep it locked to the motor. This is how bad of a problem I have been having with my truck and it is only a year old. I refuse to purchase a 200 dollar motor just because the stock gear they supply comes loose and wears the motor shaft. If I have to expoxy or JB Weld the thing on there in addition to Red Loctite I will. But basically, you pretty much have to secure the pinion with every permanent option available and forget about the possibility that you may need to take it off one day. Right now I am waiting 24 hours for the Red Loctite to dry and then we'll see what happens.
Holy i knew theres a pinion issues on these trucks but wow. I heard the earlier version had it worse. Been doing some upgrades to my truck, stiffer springs, overhauling shocks. servos. and cleaning the pinion. I just took off the grub screw, filed/grinded the flat area with a flat file. even but very little. then ad some blue locktight after i cleaned the threads. it still runs good for now. could it be that the shaft itself was woobly/or bent a mm? hope you get it sorted buddy.
@@Just4FunRC Much appreciated. I have also seen a few folks stating that their cush drive was worn causing movement of the spur gear which encouraged this behavior. Sure enough, I just checked and my cush drive had play causing the spur gear to move back and forth. Fortunately the rubber cush drive insert is only 3 dollars so after all of this I am hoping for a reliable truck :-)

udr hmm chassis ohhh my wltoys 10428 and fy03h has a chassis that looks like it. i was looking into getting a Maxx when it launched as a gift for Miniboss. we do have a few smaller trucks. im almost done building the hgp 407 a little tribute to my dad. its a clone of the bruiser yes, but he loved his shame it was stolen in the late 80s
but yes im more for the Maxx, but i think i need to play it cool and buy a 2nd hand. maybe i will get lucky as i did with my xmaxx.
