another use, is you can sprinkle them in and mix into your compost for potted plants, they soak up excess water and then slowly release that water back into the soil, extremly helpful for those that have a tendency to forget to water
My locker at the pool was getting very funky from my gear being damp and I started tossing a few silica packets in to dry it out. It works great.
I have been saving these for years. Never let anyone throw them away.
Same here, I store them in a large old Mayo jar. I also bought a bunch of food-grade packs and mylar "ziploc" bags for storing flour and rice long-term.
@@NaturalMystic69 Good idea I may try that.👍
I save the few I get from prescription bottles, in old, unlabeled jars. Not too pretty for decoration but have placed individual packets on old wood furniture... like ones my Grandfather crafted on the early 1920's.
We have a 3D printer, we store the filament rolls in Ziploc gallon-size freezer bags & I put one of those packets in the center of each spool when I put it in the bag whenever I change colors. While we do keep them in a cool/dry/dark place, we still make sure there's a silica packet in each roll.
I use them in my hearing aid case to keep moisture away. I saved money on purchasing a separate special container.
would be nice to have a explanation about what silica is and how it works its magic, I always keep my silica packs great at keeping your pot fresh and free from mold.😉
I kind of like the musty smell from old books. They take me back to my childhood.
After your silica gel packets absorb moisture from the air or wet items, place them uncovered in your refrigerator to extract the water out of them. They can be reused after that for protectibg from moisture damage. After I receive a package with "new" silica gel pack, I place them in the refrigerator to extract any water they may have a required during product shipment or storage.
Assuming you have a dry-air refrigerator that is.
I'm pretty sure I would have moist, awful sachets if I did that.
The other accepted way is to heat them- no more than about 300F, but it can take hours, so maybe it's cheaper to just buy new ones?
I have a ziplock bag full of them. I almost never throw them away. So far I've primarily used them to help maintain the sanitation of my backpack, putting one at the bottom of each compartment. I launder the backpack every few months, and replace the packets with new ones each time I do that.
I agree with Zenkakuji that we should rejuvenate the packs. I choose the oven instead of refrigerator. I put oven at 250 degrees F, keep them on a cookie sheet for an hour or so. Just like you do for a [chips, crisps, salty snack] that lost crispness. You can turn off the oven and let the temperature coast down for another half hour or so, it is still a dry environment. With the refrigerator, when you take the packet out, it instantly condenses water from the air, and the packet is used up.
How they taste after baking them? I sprinkle them like salt over my fried eggs in the morning.
Most useful tips. Never heard before. 👌👌
Thank you,
a very useful information.
GOD bless u
Thank you. I did not know most of this.
Yea I've been holding them years now. Heard a lot great uses for them and some these uses are new to me. 👌👍
Ditto ! Haven't thrown them away EVER !
Newsflash: they don't just continually absorb infinite moisture forever. 🤪 ahyulk
I've been saving theses from the hardware I use at work for years . I use them to dry flowers. I also use them to keep my hard candy at work from getting soggy and sticky from the humidity..They also work well for drying fresh herbs for simmering potpourri.
Thank you for this, very helpful🙏
Wow, thanks so much. I'd never heard about this little hack before. I have a massive comic book collection that I inherited over 24 years ago & have dragged with me to every house that I moved to. I've got no idea how much they're worth, but I've always thought of them as being somewhat of a back up plan if I was ever in need of $. I know that there's some old Marvels in there that ppl keep telling me that now's the time to sell. However, I really can't be bothered with going through them all, to make up a giant list of what's all there. So in the meantime, they're carefully stored away, in these long boxes, each comic book in it's own plastic cover with even a piece of cardboard. Even still though, I've always worried about moisture, over the years, so this idea is brilliant for me. I can't thank you enough for the info.
Thanks for sharing ☺️
Great information! I always save mine
Interesting facts thank you for sharing this with us
Thanks for this great info
Good video, I use them in my tool boxes and camera bags ......
I already never throw those away... I also constantly use them when storing the filament for my 3D printer.
Those packets can also be used to hold moisture when mixed into potting soil!
I make miniature houses and I used this for miniature grapes.
They don't last forever. Unless stored in sealed container they will go "bad" . Then full of mosture they have to be dryed. Put in oven at low temperature. Might do same in microwave, but I've never tried that.
You can also place them uncovered in a refrigerator for a day or two to dry them out.
I was wondering by putting them in an oven if the fumes are safe (?)....if so...then a good idea !
Been saving them but thanks anyway. It would be great if you could add on,on how to revitalize it back once its lost its efficiency.
Dry them with low heat.
Dry them at 110-150C for 1h or more. I am not sure whether higher temperature will damage them or not, but you can dry them at this temperature for as long as you want. These packets should be able to absorb water up to 20% of the dry mass of the silica gel itself.
I put them in oven, having heated to lowest heat, turn off, then place in for 3 hours.
I always save mine. I use them everywhere.
I love the smell of musty books, but I am also a weirdo.😅 2:50
I know now , thanks to you
great idea..thanks for sharing:)
I save mine!
i always put food grade gel pacs into all my jars of herbs and spices especially the powdered ones
Very good presentation there!...I like the speaking voice ,,,not irritating to my brain hahaha others just like robot sound,,,
very informative and helpful topic ,,,,simple small item but big usage ,,NOW I KNOW hahahah,,,TY t2 you very much,,im subs.,Loving from Philippines
I put them in my battery storage case to absorb any moisture in there.
#13, slip a few in grandpa’s back pocket, a few in jr’s hoodie.
Thank you.
A box of school chalk sticks works great to absorb humidity.
Thanks, 👏👏 Kunene South Africa.
Thanks, I’ll throw out the dangerous silica and buy school chalk instead!
Don't put those potted house plants out in the sun like they show in here. They will get sun burned and maybe even die.
How long can you keep the Silica Gel Packets for?
I love them! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Nice 😍
I've picked up I don't even know how many right off the street for the last couple years. Have a freezer bag loaded with these things just in case .
Take out the battery? what century are you guys living in?
My thoughts exactly! 😂
I mean, some models do still have a removable battery.
Well,aren't we in 1999?
My Moto Razr has a removable battery. 😌
People all over don't leave the same economically. If it works it works. No need to follow trends when your family needs to eat. Here in the US and abroad. Many take alot for granted
All good uses, but you have to activate the packs first. They only absorb so much moisture and then stop workinging. Reactivate them bu drying them out first. Unfortunately, the outer bag often will not stand up to this.
Nuts and nut flours need to be stored in the refrigerator or freezer.
I keep all mine and put them in damp areas
I use the contents to keep my 3D printer filament dry. The empty packets can go in the trash no problem. Personally, I prefer the oven for rejuvenation, because I know how long it will take. lol
What I your phone is sealed battery type can't take them out.
and then there is silica gel cat litter if you don't receive enough those tiny packages ...
or you can buy different size packages - your usual el-cheapo outlets. or specialized electronics chains like Farnell (not cheap at all, probably for reason)
Save your hi priced Ammo . Take a quart zipplock freezer bag , put the Ammo in the baggie then put two in the baggie push out all of the air as much as possible. Put the Ammo in a Ammo can and put in more packets ! Ammo will keep better for long amounts of time ! Air tight .
They can be reversed by having them out on a hot or cold dry day. Often on cold days the air can get very dry.

What do we do with the used silica gel packets once they expire, do we just throw them in garbage can or can they be recycled or compost?
They don't expire, it's silicium dioxide.
There's no need to toss them, they are great for many things. But if you want to get rid of them, just throw them away with your "normal" garbage or put the content into your compost!
They can be refreshed by placing them in a warm oven to dry them out again. You can use them over and over! Just store the dry ones in an airtight, sealed container until needed.
Easily reused by placing in the refrigerator uncovered for a few days to dry them out. They can be used for many years this way. Usually, I do this a few times in the summer when it's very humid where I live.
I keep all mine
They’re quite tasty!
I’ve always stored these with my ammo.
Where can I buy

I know you can dry out silica gel but I don’t remember what temp or how long to dry then out but it changes color.
Little kids and toddlers may mistake them for sugar packets. Better to throw them away if one has little ones.

Take out the phone 📱 battery………….what year was this video made🤔
@@natureloversadventures7335
Your choice of phone ..
So how to take out the betty and zim card from cellphone❓
how longdo they last¿??????????
I like how they say to remove the battery from your phone as if it's 2004
Can you un_saturate silica gel packets. How do you know if it is saturated?
Sun dry or low heat oven.
Put oven on lowest temp. When at that temp, turn off, put sachets in metal sieve, so good air flow, leave in 3 or 4 hours.
I am highly allergic to silica since finding out when I was 24. Silica is in a lot of makeup, adult sunscreen, Lume deodorant, stage makeup, cleanser, medicines, etc.etc.etc. I was once on steroids for over two months and antibiotics when my eyelids, lips and nose swelled up. So I will continue to throw them out.
Give them to other people!
Plenty of people could use them.
The world is not all about you.
Do you throw out your children's toys or your old clothes, when charities could use them to help people?
@@georgielancaster1356 So I should handle these packets that I am highly allergic to and risk anaphylactic shock so that you will have a few more silica packets? Kinda selfish of you. Entitled much?
But…silica is just sand. You sure it’s not the copper salts added to them you’re allergic to? And other ingredients? Hard to believe you’re allergic to sand…it’s everywhere. And glass.
You would be talking about talc(hydrous magnesium silicate). Like any mineral, getting stone powder inside your body(lungs, genitals, eyes, nose) can cause problems. Handling silicon dioxide pellets is no more dangerous than handling sand.
So you can't consume foods that contain silica? 😮 I feel sorry for your cartilage. 😩
Can you put the silca gel packsi. The sun to restore them like the bamboo charcoal? That way you canrenew their use.. how do you know when it is spent?
You can take out the water by putting them in your refrigerator uncovered for a day or two. The gel packs absorb water from the air. So even if placed in a sunny location, if the air is rather humid, the water content remains in the gel packets.
Some fridges will be too moist.
Put oven on lowest heat, turn off, put sachets in a metal sieve, so good air flow, and let them sit in oven for 3 or so hours.
🤷♀️ALL THESE ARE IS KITTY LITTER
PUT KITTY LITTER IN CUTE SOX TIE THE SOCK IN A KNOT AND YOU HAVE A DEHUMIDIFIER
THROW IT ON YOUR CAR DASHBOARD AND YOUR WINDSHIELD WONT FOG UP
THROW ONE IN YOUR PANTRY LAUNDRY ROOM ANYWHERE ITS DAMP
Thanks for the tip.
No. They are silica. Cat litter comes in many different versions.
I stopped watching after you said remove the battery from your cell phone after dropping it in water. 99.9% of the public neither have the tools or the skills needed to do this.
I use them for my gun and ammo storage.
Sweet!
My phone got so watered on a ride... I couldn't save it!😣
They all say 'Do not eat', but I just watched a video about 98% of people in the USA are dehydrated, because the CHEM TRAILS are dumping barrium strontium and aluminum into our breathing air, and those two chemicals deplete our silica. It doesn't make sense to me, so I will do research. Maybe silica is different than desiccant silica.
Cause I have so many just laying around.... lol
I never throw them away to begin with. I get them in my medications.
Put them in with your electronics when you store them in an air tight plastic bag.
Was that guy at the beginning Sam Bankman (sbf)
Show me a phone or laptop where you can take out the battery nowadays^^
I heard that silica will also kill bed bugs does anyone know how that works please DM me if you do
You need diatomaceous earth for that, basically silica powder. It’s used to treat bird pests too, comes in large tubs.
Borax like the laundry booster 20 mule team borax kills them. Just sprinkle under the mattress around the bed, on the rug, etc. The bugs walk in it getting on there legs, etc. When ingested it crystalizes internally and literally kills them from the inside out. The insides explode, and they dry out. Guaranteed to work and far less expensively than what was mentioned. It is also safe around pets, kids humans
Why keep medicines in the bathroom? 🤔
Just don't store your medications in the bathroom or anywhere moisture might accumulate like the kitchen or basement. Also, why not just put the gel packet inside the pill bottles?
I can only make a suggestion that you should never ever keep your prescription medications in your bathroom medicine cabinet government. It's the 1st place that addict, will search for your Prescription medication
How to dehydrate the used Silva gel .? PUT IT IN A TOASTER . ? Or may be micro wave ?pls check
you renew them with a dehyadrator
Does anybody sell these packets ....I keep 3 in my guitar cases?
Most phones are sealed wth 'glue' and therefore cannot have batteries easily removed.
Yup. They're like pop rocks in your mouth. They'll pop right out the ol poop shoot too. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
فعلا انا مش برميك ولا برمي الموبايل ولا ببطل اعملك كومنت .... تفتكر ليه 🧐🤔
Why do people have leftovers to throw out? The packets are so small, I barely have enough to sprinkle on my baked potato.
Hahahaha😂
1 - remove battery... ok
I put them in my gun cabinet, which is in the basement.
Of course not!
Why would I throw out perfectly good food?
Taste like sh!t though.
rice works a lot better
A bag of rice does a better job of removing moisture from your damaged phone.
I stopped watching after he said wait two days for your phone to dry 😅 bruh 💀
I hate these things. They are poisonous to pets. I'm always afraid my dog might eat one.
I thought those are candies
8 minutes to find out why? Nah, I'm good.
or eat them
I thought girls owned the world. Dang Beyoncé did you lie 👠
