- www.postercentr... How to detect the reproductions from the originals on this 1969 psychedelic concert poster featuring Led Zeppelin and Jethro Tull, both touring off their debut albums. The Jim Salzer Presents show was in Santa Barbara, CA in the summer of 1969, and the poster artist was Frank Bettencourt. Reproductions abound on this piece, so the way to tell the difference is revealed by collector Pete Howard of PosterCentral.com (phone 805-540-0020, email pete@postercentral.com). I was at that concert when I was 18. We dropped acid outside before they opened the doors, the crowd was packed tight against the arena steel doors by people in the back pushing forward. A chick next to me passed out, people were just crammed together like sardines, hysterical, and they wouldn't open the damn doors until the last second, then the crowd sprinted toward the front of the stage in a frenzy...it was insane. The Fraternity of Man opened and when they sang their hit "Don't bogart that joint, my friend (pass it over to me)", rolled joints began flying onto the stage from the audience lol. Jethro Tull was amazing, in knee high boots wearing what looked like a bathrobe, prancing around the stage, fully animated like a cartoon character (thank you Owsley). We were so ripped from the acid and weed by the time Led Zeppelin came on, all I recall were the incredible kaleidoscope colors & strange sounds coming from the stage. (thank you Owsley). Afterward we drove all night back to the Bay Area, drinking wine and smoking weed all the way. 4 weeks later I sat in a jail cell awaiting arraignment for drug trafficking. While out on bail, I saw Led Zeppelin again at Winterland in November '69...another kaleidoscopic cartoon show (thank you Orange Sunshine). Best years of my life.
Sorry, I'm late to the party. I also was 16 when I attended this concert. I actually was *grounded* from using the family car and had to hitchhike to the event, meeting my sweetheart in the parking lot. It was indoors, we were seated on the concrete floor directly in front of a pa speaker. Zep was AMAZING. My ears rang for months afterward. And. Jethro Tull was better. Argue with me...
Tull was better.
What a concert that would've been! Just scored one of these posters on ebay, you can't imagine my excitement when I saw the 'Pacific Printing' logo on the bottom there... This is one to be framed for sure!
I'm a printer and I can tell you those registration marks and the words Pacific Printing are easily reproduced. Don't let those be the only evidence your poster is real.
