The Spanish in 1572: WHY ARE THEY ON ICE SKATES?!
The Germans in 1940: Haha, no ice- WHY ARE THEY ON BICYCLES?!

Germans also used units equipes with bicycles.
As Germany did not have a large automobile industry, they relied more on motorcycles and horses.
The Wehrmacht actually had more horses than motor vehicles in 1941.

My grandfather joined a territorial (part time volunteer) bicycle regiment, in Scotland, before the first world war. I never met him or even saw a photograph of him so seeing these guys made a pleasant reminder in a roundabout way.

The Swiss Army had bike brigades from 1905-2003. My oldest Army bike was built in 1924, I had it “for personal use only”during my service…

It may look silly and old fashioned today, but bikes are faster than walking and can go where tanks and armed vehicles are stopped. You can pick up your bike, wade through a ditch and get back on. That's what the Japanese did on their approach to Singapore.

The great video and Dutch bycycle history...I also have that bicycle with the Fogers Groningen brand, a legacy from my great-grandfather...this bicycle was previously used by Koninklijke Nederlandse Indië leger (KNIL)...I have used this bicycle until now and it is not damaged at all only the paint is faded... really strong and quality bikes....but it's a shame now that fongers bikes are no longer being produced

Not since Hannibal and his elephants has the mode of soldier transit ever been this important.

I don't know if it would be fun to have bicycle highschool bands, but I sure would like to see one.

The Japanese also employed bicycles in their campaigns in WW2, notably in the Malaya-Singapore campaign. Bicycles were of utility until the end of WW2.

Finland also used bicycle troops in world war 2, you can see them in the movie Tali Ihantala 1944

All cities should have some Police officers ride bicycles.
Cycle lanes and trails would be safer and protected if city employees road bicycles and made suggestions to the city for cycling infrastructure improvements.

There are still many of these bicycles at my place, and they are bicycles with quite expensive prices even though they are hundreds of years old, almost the same as gazelle bicycles made in the Netherlands here, they are very famous because of their quality and for bicycles made in Japan between 1940-1970 they are not very popular

If you want to see a re-enactment of a bicycle army, I recommend the Danish film "April 9th" where a Danish regiment on bicycles go out to meet the Nazis - because the Danes didn't get the order to stand down. ua-cam.com/video/sOpqfVlqmVo/v-deo.html

The only thing more Dutch than a regiment on bicycles would be one on silver skates! I wouldn't be surprised if they had that, too.

We did train our soldiers in ice-skating so yes, it was a thing. A unit was about 200 men strong.
In the winter months of the 80-years war couriers moved about the country on skates too.

Isn't it strange that today roads are a lot better (smoother) for bikes, but guns are too precise now and make it too dangerous? Not to mention inattentive car drivers.
