    When I do load tests like this I set my load tester to bring the battery to it's lowest safe voltage in the battery manufacturers spec sheet. If it is a protected cell it doesn't matter how low you set it the protection circuit will cut it off before it damages the battery. By drawing the battery to it's protection cut off you will get a more accurate account of what the battery is capable of. If your device you are using it in stops working at say 3 volts then that is a good place to set it as you will be able to determine how well that battery will perform in that device. I am usually trying to determine total WH and MAH in order to make sure the cell is performing up to spec when new.

    • @richardlloydusa
      @richardlloydusa  8 років тому +1

      Agreed. I have both protected and unprotected cells and the protected cells all cut off at the correct charge and discharge points as they should have, pretty cool to verify it though. Thanks.

    dallatorretdu Sorry but I lost your comment. I would use protected cells on lights that do not have internal protection. The Olight M22 does not have any cell protection so it is possible to damage the cell inadvertently. Thanks.

  • @ReubenHorner
    @ReubenHorner 9 років тому

    Just a note about the b6 charger; when in li-lion mode it will perform as it should by allowing the voltage to go to 2.5v/cell and will charge from that too. The only thing is it will only charge to 4.10 volts per cell in that mode

    it's great to watch such j formative videos for a guy who knows nothing about these high powered rechargables. Thank you! is there that much difference between the olight and the orbtronic?

    • @richardlloydusa
      @richardlloydusa  8 років тому +2

      +Michael Zaloom The Olight is my favourite protected 18650 but the Orbtronic is a very close second, here is my video on the Orbtronic 3400mAh 18650 protected Li-ion At Amazon: amzn.to/1GgUzjV To tell the truth there really is not a large difference. It's just a matter of personal preference not performance. Thanks.

    I would recommend calibrating your charger. The copy versions of the iMax B6 chargers are not calibrated out of the box. In addition I would recommend getting yourself a DMM with a higher degree of precision. There is also some degree of rounding error in your multimeter.

    • @richardlloydusa
      @richardlloydusa  8 років тому

      +Ryan Donovan Thank you. I have purchased a more accurate DMM and the HF meter is surprisingly accurate. My Imax B6 is a counterfeit as a result I was not able to calibrate it but it too is fairly accurate too. If I decide to do more battery tests I will purchase a new charger Turnigy Smart6 80w 7A Balance Charger with Graph Screen at Amazon: amzn.to/1TJLiph and use my new meter too.

    Hey Richard, I ordered the Olight 18650B battery three days ago from Amazon. Talk about two guys being on the same page at the same time. WOW! I don't know how but you and I are in sync. Anyway I also ordered the Olight M2S Javelot flashlight 10 or 12 days ago as well. The flashlight came with one Olight 18650B battery as well but I felt the need to pick up a spare one for the Javelot just in case I needed it. By the way the M2S Javelot has a throw of more than 800 meters using only one Olight 18650B battery! "Are you kiddin me" you might ask? There is NO othher light light on the planet that can do what this light does PERIOD! The Javelot uses a single XM-L2 1020 lumen led. I loved your video as well. I feel very confident using these protected cells in my new flashlight after watching this well produced video highlighting Olight 18650B batteries. Thanks.

    • @richardlloydusa

      No, it will not. This is an 18650 cell it will not physically fit. Thanks

    • @OZwizrd
      @OZwizrd 6 років тому +1

      You also have to check your charger as they will be designed for Ni-Mh or Ni-Cd and not Li-ion. Charging rates and voltages will be different so it is not compatible with the 18650 cell. Size difference is by design so you cannot accidentally charge it in the wrong charger for most chargers on the market.

      +Yosue Caridad If you are going to use it regularly and not abuse it the uni-t ut33c is quite good. If you are going to use it once in a while and it doesn't have to be super accurate the (cen-tech red) more than good enough. Where do I get the black holder for the 18650 so I can hook it up to my imax B6? Got a couple of alleged panasonic cells incoming I'll probably have to test the same way to know if they're genuine or not.

      +jairdabrini I modified this cheap charger by disabling the charge circuit and connecting the leads to the charge terminals, got it on Amazon: amzn.to/1qeVChE But if that is too involved for you, you can buy an 18650 battery holder and use that instead. Here is the link for one of those at Amazon: amzn.to/1Q0Ocnm Thanks

    • @OZwizrd

      You can, but after one use you have to throw it out also the only closest equivalent primary to 18650 is using 2 of the CR123A but may not fit battery compartment always. This way if using rechargeable batteries we are reducing waste and you should be saving money as you can theoretically charge it 500 times and as long as electricity is cheap in your area. You could also buy a solar charger and that will be the cheapest and most environmentally friendly way to use batteries. There is an upfront cost of chargers and extra cost of rechargeable batteries but if your a heavy user of batteries this will pay off in the long run. Example cost of charger $12 (Nitecore UM10 USB charger- Amazon) cost of Solar cell for charger $140 (suntactics) cost of battery $16 (2x Samsung Batteries - Amazon) total =$168. Cost of primary (single use lithium battery $1ea - Amazon) 2x CR123A x 500 (uses compared to rechargables) = $1000. So it is a no brainier you will get your money back after 84 uses. Note if not charging often could be more expensive as the rechargeable batteries loses its charge over its lifetime, self dying batteries. Typically if your charging batteries often like every 2 weeks should work out more cost effective as these batteries should last 2-3years, however if your using 10 or more a year this will be saving the environment significantly as you will only be throwing 1 our every 2-3 years instead or 20-30. See ua-cam.com/video/kz6SmLC6Uk4/v-deo.html for solar charging setup. Great for flashlights as you use by night, charge by day or buy a second set of batteries, one for charging while your using the other.

    I do not know what kind of affiliation (sorry, it looks like that) you have with Olight, or Amazon Olight sellers,
    but making a review and not saying biggest flaws of Olight 18650 batteries is not OK if you want to do independent review.

    • @richardlloydusa
      @richardlloydusa  9 років тому +2

      kongo482 What flaw in this battery are you aware of that I am not? BTW I work for myself. I bought the battery with my own money and no one paid me a penny to do this review or any other video review I have ever done. I take pride in being able to say that. But even if I ever where to be paid to do a review I would still be honest about what I found. I did not find any flaw in this battery. It delivers on the advertised claims and I did not see any flaw in it what so ever. If you look at my Nitecore battery review ua-cam.com/video/TeEyRP80C-E/v-deo.html you will notice I was not as kind to it. I did find a flaw in it and I was honest about it. Thanks

      Richard Lloyd OK, to be more specific. What is over-current protection limit on Olight 18650? That is most important reason why protection is on 18650 battery. Or What is max Amp rating that Olight 18650 protection will let you use, before tripping ?

    I think your charger is the fake charger. The fake charger tends to read the voltage inacurately

    • @richardlloydusa
      @richardlloydusa  9 років тому +2

      LetsGetStarted I am on the fence as to whether there is a fake version of this charger or not. I am of the opinion that they are all made in the same factory and some people stick a holographic sticker and charge an extra $20 for the same charger (I may be mistaken). I think my issue is the length of my wires and the light gauge of the wires I used on the battery holder. I am going to increase the gauge of those wires, shorten the length and put banana plugs on the end bypassing the supplied wire so I can connect them directly to the charger. That should help with the error. BTW the middle point between both readings are usually spot on. Thanks for watching and commenting.

      Richard Lloyd I bought it for AUD$62 from www.hobbywarehouse.com.au (they ship to Australia only i think) The shipping was about $10 so the total price for me was $72 (it is genuine) Its the cheapest price i can see (in an Australian warehouse) It is on discount at the moment (from $129 incuding shipping). I wanted to get it quick so i ordered it from an Australian warehouse.

    I seems to me your Imax B6 charger may be a fake, which might explain the voltage discrepancy. I have both and can see some of the tell tale signs like the different buttons and label alignment, and like yours my fake one is also less accurate. There are heaps of youtube videos about just as many pirate variations of this popular charger.

    • @richardlloydusa

      Thanks. I now know it's a fake but it is a fairly good fake and works quite well but I do understand that there may be some inaccuracy in it but from what I can see it is quite accurate. I will be using it again to test some 9900mAh 18650 red cells from China, more as a public service than anything else as I know they will be no where near 9900 mAh but the charger will be close enough to tell you how badly they are ripping you off with these cells. I may make a video on how to do this as I have a NICad cordless drill and NICad chargers for them both. I find their capacity limited even when brand new. I will do some research into it. I believe it will either require a BMS or the use of a balance charger. I am thinking the balance charger arrangement would ber the simpler but I am just speculating at the moment. I will put it on my possible future videos for consideration. Thanks for asking. I know I did not tell you how to do it but it would be far easier for me to show with a video.

    Hi, thanks for the vid. I was looking to buy the 3600 mAh version (www.olightstore.com/batteries-and-chargers/olight-18650-lithium-ion-3600mah-battery). I don't see why not at only a couple dollars more (for a battery you recharge 500 times). Do you think I can expect the same performance and quality, or would it be safer to stick with the 3400 mAh's?

      I have not bought the 3600 mAh but I trust Olight to make a quality product. I can't see why the 3600 mAh battery would be any different in quality. Thanks.

    just because it holds capacity doesnt mean it's good. Cheap cells will depreciate quicker than a good cell. Also have reliability issues like cannot deliver 1A and tapers of to 0.5A-0.2A. I have a few cheap cells that have 1500mah, but 500mah of that is acheived at 0.5A. This is the case with a lot of cheap replacement batteries which causes the laptop to sudenly die -due to the fact that the laptop current get the desired amps. The BMS in these batteries aren't very smart so it cannot communicate with the laptop that the amperage in the cell is unreliable therefore likely to suddenly lose power.

    don`t solder anything on your 18650 , there are small iron magnets just for that, and very cheap, like 10 cents /piece the size of a small washer, the same place you buy your accus.

      the small magnets are cylindrical and covered in chrome to conduct electricity, they have the role of replacing the missing bulbs on the positive side of the accus so that you can use them in flashlights.

    Thank you for the informed, thorough presentation. I would only suggest in order to isolate the readings variables, use a Fluke or equivalent grade meter, and compare reading between different DMMS. (I don't find Harbor Freight to be very reliable for too much beyond their 7 & 9mil nitrile gloves. ) I buy my Olightts from kathryn-md at ebay, one of the very best sellers there.

    • @richardlloydusa
      @richardlloydusa  8 років тому

      +Ob1 Zenobi Thanks. I have upgraded my DMMS too but not to the level of the Fluke yet Mastech MS8229 Auto-Range 5-in-1 Multi-functional Digital Multimeter At Amazon: amzn.to/1VFztqA and Mastech MS8268 MS8261 Series Digital AC/DC Auto/Manual Range Digital Multimeter At Amazon: amzn.to/1VFztXI But they rate highly on Amazon. I know the cheap Harborfreight meter is an easy target but it actually is usually spot on with the other meters when I compare the readings (surprising). Thanks for the feedback and watching.

      +jr10 BTW. As a follow-up, I was reflecting on the part of your video where you mentioned that your SkyRay would work with one battery. I was curious and thought the similarities between your light and my Nitecore Tiny Monster TM11 were very close. I was shocked to see my light work with one battery. Thank you sir.

    • @richardlloydusa
      @richardlloydusa  8 років тому +1

      +jr10 You are welcome. When I saw the cells where connected in parallel, I was both surprised and impressed as it gives you flexibility to use one to four batteries. If you are in an emergency situation and all you have is one cell this light will work where others will only work if you have the complete set (be it two, three or four). Also you can pace your cell usage by using one at a time till it wears out and then replacing it with a fresh one. That way you know when you are on your last cell. Very nice. Glad I could help. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    I read in the instruction guide of a charger which looks similar to this (Imax B6AC) which advised against using it for batteries with protection circuitry. Unless the circuit trips it seems to work fine, not sure why else they warn against it.

    • @richardlloydusa
      @richardlloydusa  8 років тому +1

      +tombell12 No idea why they would warn against it? The protection circuit is there to protect the cell so anything bad the charger may try to do to the cell would be canceled out by the protection circuit (hence why it's there). I have not had any problems with protected cells on my Imax B6. Thanks.

      Im using a Nitecore D4 charger

    • @richardlloydusa
      @richardlloydusa  9 років тому

      +JAY LEE Since you are using the Nitecore D4 charger there is no chance you will overcharge so if you are using unprotected cells the only things you need to worry about are shorts and draining them too low. If you are cognisant of those two factors while using the Panasonic 3400mah cell you should be fine. The protected batteries basically make it a no brainer. Thanks.

      I am sure they are and when I review them we will see what their true capacity is. Judging by the weight alone I can tell they are going to be bad. Seeing as the largest capacity 18650 currently being manufactured (that I know of is 3500mAh) you know it's a lie, but how bad a lie? LOL we will see. They might as well label them a Gazillion mAh (dilithium crystals not included). All the best.
