I agree with Gary's reasoning to fix it and retain the engine. Since after this repairs, the engine is almost fully refreshed, and have it regularly serviced, it should be reliable for another 200k kms. Another great work by Burto. Good one gents. 👍
Yeah in theory yes mine got rebuilt and hopping lasts ages
Yeah that's simply not the case with the 3litres. My in-laws Gu was religiously serviced under the recommended intervals and still ended up blowing a head gasket and cracking the block
@@Jacobtheunwiseyep, like Tim hates zd30 religiously maintained and two head gaskets in under 100,000kms, and now a new head.
My 3ltr is now a td42 because when I go on holidays I like to get back home
i would be embarrassed to say do all that work and it will be reliable for another 200,000 k it should have been 400,000 k with no repairs , just filters and oil for 400,000 k not do 10g worth of work for less than 200,000k
4jj1 conversion. Really give him something to smile about behind the wheel
I think your decision to bring Berto on has been best move for Chanel he explains stuff so good for the common back yard mechanic to let you understand wtf ea h part does and it’s purpose
😮On top of that his personality is also entertaining, he is always smiling and joking around "Good for TV" so to speak.
Absolutely, burtos that bloke that got put in the deep end and learned to fix shit in any situation - great knowledge and just the way he works I love watching these episodes
TT is onto some mad original style of content and it is really paying off. If you wheel and fix your own 4x4 like a lot of us do there’s so many snippets of good info on this channel.
Or you can watch someone like Sam young spend money and not fix or build anything himself. Nothing worthwhile for the average Joe blow✋🏼
I know where my views will be at 🙌🏼
@@joeblow1711 my D4D Hilux just did from Wollongong to the tip 320 thousand ks just did injectors and front rotors brakes and a freshen up I’ve gotten alot of good information from here most of us ain’t rich so doing work yourself is the go and berto throws out some good information that’s for sure
You and Berto are a superstar duo.👍
While the ZD won't spin all 4 wheels on bitumen, it's good enough to take the Patrol anywhere. The 200k long motor is just fine, now the fuel system is new, and all the hoses and manifold are new. There's no point at all considering an engine swap. But you've missed putting on a fuel pre filter to help stop shit fuel getting through.
!6 years old, 200,000ks, running pretty well until some crap fuel took out the injectors. Nothing to complain about, in my view. Old crusty hoses should have been routinely replaced, the intercooler wasn't bad for 16 years (mine was leaking at 2000ks). Fuel pump still good but leaking, and turbo good. Warped exhaust manifold common on many engines not just the ZD. Now that it's got all new bits it will go for a long time in Gary's hands, and as Burto admitted it will easily keep up with the TDs (everyone knows that to be true, but TD owners find it hard to admit :) )
Except it's not a td42.
@@Madman117-k4o Are you stup*d? Exactly where did I say it was a TD42?
@@Madman117-k4o No, not a POS. Much better than a TD42 from the dark ages.
Youve just done everything on it. Keep it in there
Great work Burto. IMO, I think you should keep the OG engine in it. Now that most of it is new.
Lads, thanks again for diagnostics tip, that clear fuel hose tip priceless.
Oh, the dreaded exhaust manifold squeal, had to do mine also after returning from the cape in 2021 and it's just began leaking again after 13K trip touring to Darwin & return.
Burto, you made that manifold swap out look far simpler than I remember it, that f*#ken heat shield, query 'Did you refit it or bin it'?
Shit of a job, not looking forward to it.
The surpentine belt squeal will be belt tensioner hydraulic bushes worn out. No point replacing belt if they're chopped out, replace hydraulic unit also.
Thanks again lads, most informative.
Gary, stick with the ZD30 old fella, I love mine, BUT I've never driven a M57 converted one. Hahaha
i fixed my ZD30-, traded it in on a Y62..... no more nightmares :)
Great video, I'm not so much into the mechanical stuff/builds, but Burto is a real professional and does all the little due diligence things that separate a great mechanic from an average mechanic. Hope the engine keeps on chugging.
The TD crowd are funny.. "oh no something happened, quick put a TD in it" is the diesel equivalent of doing a carby conversion on any modern EFI petrol engine.
Tyler and Berto, 10/10 vid lads. You guys rock and just love the content you are producing that make this a leader in 4x4 channels.
Cannot wait for the next adventure!
Much appreciated!
Burto is amazing to watch. I have a 2011 zd30 so everything you have done in this episode is stuff I’ll be doing to mine in the near future
Hey boys,
There is one more thing you should definitely check out. Take off the EGR valve and see if the flap is still attached. They have been an issue with zd30 engine and can cause many misdiagnosis problems. I’ve got a video on my UA-cam channel that shows the problem.
I went through exactly the same problem as you guys have been experiencing. I replaced every like you including also the starter motor too eventually discovering it was the Egr valve all along.
Happy to help in anyway way boys.
I think the EGR flap on this is gone due to the catch can being installed, looks like it’s had an EGR delete done at some stage. I think that’s why Burto was staring at it strangely 🤣
@@4WheelingInNSWYep, he actually stared at it kinda like "you are there but not doing anything since we turned you off" and it's a shame we have to bolt you back on.
I have a 2012 GU. I'm getting heaps of information and ideas following along with the build. Keep the GU!
You have struck gold with burto, his knowledge is priceless, brilliant stuff lads👌
Burto, what a legend type of friend to have.
Keep the 3 litre, figure it out and make the best of it, there are so many going around with high klms unopened.
The egr is a funny thing ,everyone advised me to to blank mine off, i did for a number of years, the performance over all was better, quicker spool up rate, no turbo lag etc .......but when towing up long steep ranges the water temps would sky rocket, i kept reading about the subject and took it back to standard, the engine temps dropped by 10 degrees!, back to normal operating range! When it comes to the 3litre everyone has an opinion, it will be good seeing your dads experiences with his one.
Great vid I think Gaz is looking at things in general with the right attitude. The 3L is a nice(ish) point of difference.
Just buy a SIV 4.8. I have had my 07 model for 10 years and literally nothing has failed......at all. Sometimes i think its boring because there is nothing to work on :) The extra fuel used is nothing in comparison to the money people spend on a) Getting more power from diesels, b) Making diesels "reliable", c) Maintenance and breakdowns.
2 inch lift, steel bar, winch, 33's and i sit around 15L/100. Not awesome but hardly terrible. As a daily its 17-18 but you get that.
The only mechanical mod is changed diff gears as the factory 3.5 are too high and previous owner put 85% gears in transfer.
Same fuel consumption as my 2002 4.8 . Over 400,000 km and still running sweet. 2 inch life ,4.1 diffs ,33s 👍
Still loving the rawness of the whole show. Probably leaning a little hard to mechanical over wheeling. Love to see an FTE in this particular vehicle. Gotta give the old boy a chance at track domination.❤
Boys, being a bit harsh on the ol' 3.0. Shit fuel and crap maintenance will kill any common rail.
Meanwhile, abused td42's are punching out well over 500k with nothing more than an oil and filter change.
@@MarcusCicero1 yep td42 much more reliable and I own a zd 30 crd but still issues with td42 overheating and snapping cranks there not perfect
@@isaacmissen3486either overheat from poor maintenance or running way to much power.
Same with snapping cranks. A well built maintained td wont have those issues
Also don't forget Tyler is on his 3rd td42 lol
@@MarcusCicero1say that to Tyler's 3rd td42
Keep her going. Iv got one that's done 500,000. Look after them & they look after you. Love work guys.
Berto is an absolute legend!!!! I wish I had a mate like him 🥹
At about 200 in my identical car I did Injectors manifold and gasket upgraded the intercooler hd clutch and then had new fuel pump not too long after due to a leak and its been pretty good since even had it tuned to 21psi stock turbo at 230 I'm at 300 now I think what your doing is about right for the 200k mark!!! I still love my one regardless of these issues but at this age and ks I don't think its surprising!!!!
Absolute GOLD you lads …. easy watch , great diagnostics without all the yibba yabba BS … keep up the great work 🙏
Burto is fantastic!!
Great job, Berto. Hope you’re not using standard grease on those brake slides… It’s a special rubber grease to be used.
Berto your a legend
Hi guys would like you to keep
The motor for a while so we can see how the repairs went.
Also it would be good to get a price of all the parts and an additional price if a mechanic did it for you.
Thanks guys great vid once again
For all those asking about the EGR flap missing, I would think it’s gone ( hence why Burto was looking at it strangely ) as many people remove the EGR / do EGR deletes etc in conjunction with the catch can so they have less issues with soot going back through the engine.
Maybe this had been done previously by last owner 🤷♂️
Alot of people either don't know about blocking egr, don't have the knowledge or tools to block the egr, or too lazy to block the egr. Just because it has a catch can doesn't mean egr has been blocked🤷♂️
@@rourkekilner oh 100% agree, the catch can doesn’t necessarily mean the EGR block has been done, I was looking at it more from a “done in conjunction” with the catch can scenario. 👍👍
@4WheelingInNSW yea I get you. You'd hope people would do it like that😂
As much as I love a TD42t it will be good to see how much life you can get out of the 3l used as a camping rig. You are so lucky to have Burto on your team.
Hope you get a good run out of it now. We bought a 2015 CRD with 88K a couple of years ago for $30 grand done around 30K now no problems still think the last of the GU's are the best value for 4x4s out there a 2015 Land Cruiser would have cost 2 or 3 times more and they are not perfect or any better as 4x4s. Keep the ZD30 everyone is interested in how it goes and fixes when needed great vid thanks.
If it keeps running then great but if not perhaps look into the BMW N57 swap.
Good job burto 👍👍
Your All over it
great vid, berto explains it all so well. Videos are really popping now with the mainstream tracks, digging the older 80s - 2000s tracks you are choosing.
Thanks mate!
As the owner of a gq td42 and a gu French 3.0 diesel, and after a complete reconditioned engine (after endless problems) fuel pump the works, it still had constant problems. Meanwhile the td42 has had nothing spent on it except general maintenance + 1 alternator, @ nearly 700000 ks one owner before me.. I still breath a sigh of relief I sold the gu. In saying that, there are some people who say they understand the zd and know everything that goes wrong with them and how best in making them reliable. At the end of the day for me' the td was much simpler and you only get a certain amount of money in your life. Will be interested to see how long before next issue with it. On the French the d23 nav motor is meant to be reliable going back in Europe well before it's arrival in Australia. Some with 800k on them. But in saying this I have learnt Nissan and Mercedes actually took the reins in designing this engine, hopefully renault learnt something about diesel design as they ok with petrol being involved in F1.
I have been down this road with my 3 litre crd patrol and replacing the pressure relief valve did not fix the problem, just created another one. I replaced the common rail with a genuine Nissan product as Nissan recommended and bingo all good now!
Always been a fan TT since the start. You’re the only UA-camr I actually have to watch when you drop a vid. And the berto factor has made it even better. At first I thought he was a pest but he’s the best! He explains relevant mechanical stuff better than anyone I’ve seen.
That RDA GP brake hack is the best thing I’ve learned in years. Wondering why my stupidly expensive 4x4 extreme pads feel like stopping on banana skins. Cheers burto and love your work Tyler keep it up you are on to something super awesome with your content 💦
Thanks mate, appreciate it!
As much as you might wanna rag on the ol 3L - DON'T FORGET TYLER IS LITERALLY ON HIS 3RD TD42!!!!
Way to much boost.
@@Madman117-k4o i run 40psi on my 4JJ1 in my patrol still runs to this day without an issue. if a 4.2 cant run more than 8psi then theres something wrong.
@@Madman117-k4o boost is not what kills diesels
@@mesahatesayou it’s the EGTs
@@mesahatesayou I have a 105 1HZ boosted to 11psi and that’s a safe one
Gday, the thing now is you know what you have and I’d stick with it, heaps more cost to engine swap and will it be worth it, great episode mate, cheers
520,000 ks on my 4jb1t, starter motor clutch only replacements.
Burto's got the look,
He's got the look, he's got the look,
And he goes, nah nah nah, nah nah nah nah,
Nah nah nah nah, he's got the look😂
Happy to see you got Berdo fixing the car. He knows his shit and enjoyable to watch.
As a Swede it’s nice to hear you choose Swedish music in your later videos.
Love these diagnose and repair ep's - helpful to those who fix thier cars themselves. Would like to see an engine build and engine swap series, but for Gary the 3.0L should be sweet - just needs the love.
How does Gary monitor for the dreaded grenade?
I love these zd30 patrol videos gives me insight on what to do to mine
check your fuel lines are correct from tank to front mine were swoped over intake to return caused a lot of issues
Well in my opinion common sense would be to keep the 3.0L, but because this is a UA-cam channel based on entertainment I’d do a TD42 swap but not go nuts chasing power output. That would go a long way to making the car more reliable & reliability should be first & foremost with any 4wd owner.
We have a zd30di patrol that did 515000kms on the first engine and now 25000 on the second with very little to no issues other than normal replacing thing when needed and drives great its to bad that the engines are such a mixed bag of reliability hope you have more luck with yours.
The Td42 was a great engine. But a mate who ran mechanical fuel injection pump resto business hated the 3 litre. He had endless requests for help.
Yep same old ZD. Costing their owner heaps of money to keep going.
Good episode men.👌I reckon keep the 3.0 for now, see how it goes now that Burto has fixed everything that was wrong with it.👍👍👍
Saved......and ready for the next trip 🤙
Loving the music choice for your videos of late Tyler👌🏼
Cheers!
And so it came to pass that at 14:32 Burto stared down at the EGR valve and saw the main problem.....he's great, would have found the broken off valve.
Change the banjo bolt out of the common rail with a normal bolt which overrides the pressure relief valve if it’s leaking and bypassing. Costs pretty much nothing and starts way better because the computer won’t let the injectors fire without the minimum pressure in the common rail. I did it years ago and has never been an issue as the fuel pump has a pressure relief anyway. They are a awesome engine once you set them up right and they can make huge power reliably if you want
Gary's on the money, after all the mods and and bad luck with fuel and previous lax maintenance any car would suffer. All cars have issues, all can be serious in their own way. Berto, like your sense of humor and your explanation of things, keep up the good work both of you. I've had 2 patrols and 85% of issues I've had have been self inflicted stuffing around with it. Better the devil you know than the one you don't.
Good job guys, i like to see how all it all works. Alotnof the time mechanics will say rwplace this part itll cast 2k but you sont see how many hours go into replacing it.
i dont consider 200,000km "high kms" unless its a motorbike. most of my cars have all been well over that anywhere between 250-720,000kms and majority problem free. a few i have had to replace engines but mostly lemon motors like the 22R, 2.6 G6 or G16A/B donks and usually for next to nothing cost wise. one of the main reasons i avoid diesels. petrols might be thirsty but they rev, generally faster, smoother, and cheap as chips comparitivly to maintain and repair.
My TD 2003 3.0 still going strong at 450k
Traded in my 2001 series 2 in 2013 with 340k km on the clock. No issues at all but also no mods. Now with the CR, no issues, uses bit more fuel.
Strong like... an anaemic sloth.
@@j...bro. Yep, but works good
Minus injectors, felt like I was watching my GU getting fixed up. That manifold loves to warp on the crd zd’s. Keep the engine and play catch up w maintenance and it’ll be fine
Ive been waiting for this as i have the same GU Patrol with the ZD30 Engine. Its hard where i live to find the TDs even harder on the parts so yeah
If you replace the fan belt replace the tensioner at the same time they fail very often. Either genuine one or full manual one from fabwitz if the one on the car isnt to bad just keep for a spare
The EGR flap was missing it the EGR housing. If it hasn't already been removed this will be sitting it the intake manifold by the two bolt diamond shaped flange thing.
Hopefully no more serious problems with Gary’s rig!
Gary’s GU fan favourite of the channel. Keep the 3.0
Good vid guys
Nothing like giving the old girl some love…. People forget it’s 2024 and this is a 2008 model…cant believe how warped that manifold was 🫣
Just an interesting one. Starting issues is almost identical to my old man's 3L issues. Ended up being starter motor, not sure why but it has something to do with pumping fuel in, and when the starter is lazy, it takes forever to start. Just sort of stumbled on that one by accident
I was at a dealer yesterday looking for a new fourby and i came across a very tidy and low km 3.0L patrol. Was tempted forv a moment but heellllll no.
They great if you buy a roller 🤣
Swap engine... winner. And new infotainment centre.
The squeaky belt on the 3L is normally fixed with a genuine belt. Very common for non genuine to squeal after a while
Good old backyard BURTO......😊😮
Good job guys, yeah unfortunately the first of common rail diesels are all due for injectors and pumps. Unfortunately, the cost of doing so is not cheap.
For the price of a 3L u can’t really beat it. Sure fuel pumps turbos add up but that’s done now. Should be a good motor now. I just hate those belt tensioners they always break
Im really surprised that there would be so many problems with such low miles. Especially for a diesel. This thing must have been driven hard and mistreated. Hope you guys can get it back in good nick. Cheers Tyler🎉🎉
Service service service, people don't do this enough, oil & filters are cheap engines are expensive, yet people still skimp on basic maintenance!
The joys of fine tolerances and CRD mate. Had injectors go at 100,000 on a very regularly serviced CRD engine, was going to cost more to replace the injectors with parts and labour than what the car was worth running and with a full tank of diesel !! Sold it for the price of the injectors and gave away a mint clean 4 year old car with it 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
@@4WheelingInNSW Oh shit, not good, why I said what I commented on to Tyler, worries me they are spending good money on bad. I have a mate with a SWB 2.8L and its been an ongoing issue with overheating for a couple of years, he's looking at selling it, but has spent a ton, on it. Maybe a Engine swap might be better way for him too.
@@maverick2242 the 3.0 grenade motors though in those patrol’s are a 50/50 luck thing. There’s probably as many that have imploded as there are that haven’t.
There’s a few mods, like needle valves etc that can be done to make them far more reliable but yeah, it seems to just be the luck of the draw. I think it just depends on how many black cats you’ve run over. 🤣🤣
@@4WheelingInNSW True with all lemons its a 50/50 thing huh!
I also not sure if the did the exhaust, I think a 3.0" turbo back is a must also!
they are duds all of them , i worked at nissan from the day these things first showed up at the time i was in charge of warranties at my dealership and because of the zd30 we had to employ another warranty clerk to keep up ! once you swap the motor out for a td42 or a 4jj1 it will be an awesome vehicle
To go the extra inch, and I’m also to blame, a fresh brake fluid pump through bleed, to get it Bagus✔️
Love ya work boys if you engine swap it consider a Cummins 4.5ltr.
Thank you so much Tyler for videos like this. I know this is your full time job now however we really appreciate the effort put in to filming, editing and sharing these sorts of clips, it helps us all better understand the intricate workings of these expensive, bloody pain in the 🫏 CRD engines. I agree with Gary, sometimes the expense is big however it’s still not as big as new car debt so look after it, service it and love it and it’ll treat you the same way in return. Got to weigh up the most cost effective outcome and result.
And Burto, hats off to you mate - remembering where all those black hoses and greasy bolts go back together, you’re worth more money mate. Respect brother ✊🤜🤛.
Was great meeting you both at the show last weekend too, you may remember I was with my daughter Chloe who was laughing when old mate was telling Burto how good looking he is on TV 🤣🤣🤣👍🇦🇺
I bought one needing an injector pump. Went to intall it and omg you guys are braver than me. Lol. I ripped the engine out and tossed it. Now its all apart trying to put a barra in it.
A Supercharged 4.8L 🤔😉😋🤓✍
Good to see someone else uses a smoker much easier to find a leak an using a vacuum tester
Yeah best decision to fix it for now. They work well if maintained and a few mods. Definitely get rid of the airbox and intake to turbo.
Get a better setup.
I have a crd 3L and i came from a 4.8 so miss the power but spent on ZL30 turbo and front mount. Does the job at 132kw and 530nm at the wheels.
If engine swapping go the BMW m57
Just ZD things! been watching the struggle with this thing since ya's popped by workshop while in Cooktown, seems like you guys got on top if it finally just had to replace near everything 😅
Keep an eye on manifold, I've replaced a few of those things even with genuine and they always warp after awhile, literally just finished one last week extracting multiple snapped studs! Get warped ones machined and refit they don't seem to move after they warp and find where they want to sit I've done dozens now.. might save Garry some coin if it ever happens I always cringe at manifold leaks on ZD's nearly always broken studs 😵
Keep up great content lads, hope to see you guys up in the cape again some point hopefully without the breakdowns
🍻
Cheers mate!
We have had a few in at work long crank, and fuel pump performance code, most of the time it's been the injectors being that have been replaced, next step is relive l valve more them likely the cause for the fault
If you ever do a head or hole a piston m57 swap it.
Burto is the best !! Great video boys 😅
M57 or om606 for the old boy come on keep him modern don’t go backwards to a td
Not sure everyone thinks like I do but personally I’d get rid of a car I’d had major issues with if I’d been let down by it. I had a BT50 a good few years ago that I had loads of problems with. Absolute money pit. But even when I’d got it fixed and everything running right, in the back of my mind I could never shake that feeling that I didn’t trust it. So every time I heard a rattle of a bang I was instantly stressed about it breaking down again.
Was a happy day when I said goodbye to that Ute.
Sucks for Gary’s bank account “ lucky Burdo’s on the payroll 🤠
Was expecting full send bigger better but Gaz will do just as good with 3 litre 👍
Burto.
I've a genuine query for you.
Why would you not fit a secondary fuel filter now?
Just makes total sense now with new pump, injectors etc to protect everything from a repeat cycle in Gary's future travels.
Myself, knowing of the ZD30 issues, fitted a secondary filter to mine from new, I thought it a practical insurance add on.
Did catch can at same time, again insurance protection, both items from new.
@tylerthompson Haven't seen any of your vids for months (thanks algorithm) but catching up with haste at present.
Loving the music of late. How are you getting around copyright restrictions though?
Keep up the good work.
Paul/Toowoomba/Qld
This is just making me glad i sold mine..
You're being a bit harsh on the ZD30, I bought mine 18 months ago and it hasn't even blown up once!
I think the 3 lt is a strong engine capable of 300 hp with compound set up 😊😊
Barra the world
I have 98 patrol that was tb 4.5 5 speed manual. It’s now Barra na with zf 6 speed… properly tuned
It’s a weapon. Turbocharged is next though it really doesn’t need it .
Just a heads up, the header tank needs to be replaced. You can replace the top only if you'd like or both, but use only genuine tanks for these cars the heat absolutely kills them, once they go dark in colour they will brake and cause problems for you
I'd still be putting on a high quality fuel and water separator before the factory one. CRD;s are so sensitive to dirt fuel.
Engine swap it. Lots of options. Cummins, LS Chev, Diesel Chev, Barra. Just get rid of that 3 litre. Best thing I ever did was engine swapped mine.
Yes previous owner of zd grenade 😅 they are lemons injection pump was the first sign of what did I get myself into 😢
Factory nissan 4.8 pads are a great upgrade.
