  • The front bumper on the miata is so badly oxidized, you might not even believe it’s painted, and the hood is nothing but a large pile of scratches. This week Zach tests 3 different methods of paint correction, from expensive and extensive, to quick, cheap, and…. Minty? Let’s see which method makes the most improvement on the miata’s ratty old paint!

    So my neighbor has been a mechanic for 40 plus years and has taught me a lot of helpful tricks, he showed me that linch seed oil from any like hardware store like ace hardware or home depot or lowes will have it. You boil the oil and use a microfiber rag and lather it on the paint and you can also go ahead and buff it. The oil will revive the paint like it was from factory. I used it on my 2001 jeep cherokee sport and the forest green metallic looks amazing

    • @mikecorsini85
      @mikecorsini85 3 роки тому +6

      You could get pretty much the same results with any oil filled polish. Many like to use Meguiars m07 which is pretty cheap and sold at any auto parts store. It won't do much for scratches though

    • @HaralHeisto
      @HaralHeisto 3 роки тому +6

      Just as a warning to anyone who does this, store your rags in water after doing this. Linseed oil can self-ignite when it dries out, plenty of garages and home workshops have been burned to the ground by linseed rags.
      Oh, and this won't work on cars from the last 5-10 years, as most manufacturers have switched from oil-based to water-based paints.

    For a new detailer i would recommend to use a long throw da as opposed to a rotary buffer as rotary takes lots of skill to get the best results. For the 3D most all in ones are pad dependant so for your heavier cut needs use a heavier cutting pad switch it out and with the same polish will get more out. I really like to see detailing videos from you guys as its a big part of the automotive hobby that everyone can enjoy and take pride in their vehicles regardless of what they have

      none of us are rich enough to ammo nyc every time the car needs a buff and polish. This is you're average joe including myself and I see myself doing it no problems. Paint on common cars is alot less valuable that a mclaren f1

    • @johnjacob688
      @johnjacob688 4 роки тому +1

      It's an old beat up miata. The paint was already ruined. Anything that he did just made the car look better. If it was an expensive car with mint paint I could see your point.

      @collinmost678 4 роки тому +4

      Manly Black To be honest you can do a better job than this guy with some cheaper Rupes compounds and a Harbor Freight polisher you can pick up for $50. Besides cutting corners on materials this guy made some cringe worthy mistakes on the process alone. You could do a much better job for way less than $130.

    • @braedenpokar9956
      @braedenpokar9956 4 роки тому +1

      @@collinmost678 agreed, I spent 60$cad on my 3 step polish kit, even came with 3 different polishing pads. Sure the bottles are small, but fuck I don't need alot of polish, certainly not half a litre. Automagic ftw

    • @Patrick94GSR
      @Patrick94GSR 4 роки тому

      Braeden Pokar yeah but you need WAY more than 1 pad for each step for a whole car. 2-3 pads minimum for each step up to 6 pads per step for a big SUV or truck. You could easily spend $150 in pads alone. But that’s necessary to ensure you’re not cross contaminating panels with residue stuck in the pads.

    Something i do a little different in my 3 stage correction is i substitute the dedicated polish for a cut/gaze/wax all in one, specifically auto finesse tripple (carnauba based).
    Its sort of a transitional step, the cut and glaze helps remove and fill any microscratches i couldn't quite get with the dedicated compound along with most other minor imperfections, then the wax just sets a base layer down, for my dedicated wax, its like doing a double wax but without the extra work, such a time saver.
    Tripple specifically has the added bonus of not leaving any chalky residue and being plastic trim friendly, so one less thing to worry about.

      Actually with virtually no clear coat on that front bumper I wouldn’t be surprised if that was paint rather than debris being picked up on the pad. He seems to have used new pads for each method so for that small of an area it would be insane to have that much build up after already washing and coating the car. Normally with enough clear coat on the panel you should be picking up fine debris and not any paint.

    Just like anything to do with paint, prep is essential. Claybar, inspect, tape off, de-badge and get your surface nice and clean *before* going ham with the polisher.
    I think that using a good buffing machine also plays a huge role in how your paint's going to look in the end. I use a Makita DPO600Z cordless dual action polisher on my car, it's absolutely amazing. The fact that it's cordless for one allows me to really get around the car and access all the tight spots you'd find to be tricky to access.
    Selecting good product is also crucial. I personally use Rupes pads and polishes, as the colour matched system makes it really easy to do a step by step detail. Their kit is a four stage kit, coarse, medium, fine and diamond fine. I then top it all off with some Swissvax onyx carnauba wax. Bowen's Own does a really nice wheel cleaner called Wheely clean. That stuff smells like total butt (Seriously, it's some of the worst smelling shit you've ever smelt) but it does a sick job at cleaning wheels :)
