- Ever thought about failure? As a photographer it's something that I think about a lot, especially as it's how I make a living. In this short video, I talk about how I deal with the fear of failure. It's something that can affect your mental health, and could stop you from being creative. How can we stay creative, even with the fear of failure.

FAIL = First Attempt In Learning. Learning is a process. Learning is messy. We learn more from our “failures” than we do from our successes.
nice!
Loving these videos Chris 🥰 creative thinking part of the process of finding that inner peace
2:50 in.... Exactly! Having a fear of failure and focussing excessively on whatever that failure may be will only lead you down a rabbit hole. The deeper the hole the narrower the walls become, closing in around one self. Which then becomes very difficult to turn around to climb back out of.
Been there myself, it ain't pleasant! Luckily I've picked up a few essential tools to never return to depth, don't get me wrong though I've stood at the entrance many times and known the signs to walk away upright and not crawl in head first on all fours.
Although in saying the above, I applaud the courage you have Chris for pursuing your path in the industry you love and cherish, sometimes we all need to have faith and trust the inner voice that tells us "You got this"
Thanks David - very honest of you to comment like this! I think failure is one of those areas that we’re often so afraid of talking about, or even prepare for, but is so important to address for our mental health. Even if we’re addressing it to decide not to go in that direction…
Constant learning process. Cheering for you Chris! You are creative and experienced.
Thank you - that’s very kind 😀
What a great and honest video! Thanks for making it.
Thank you ☺️
Wow, this was deep, but much appreciated 😊
You are so welcome!
I was in Holland shooting Ozzy, Motorhead, Velvet Revolver back in 2007 and suffered near fatal heart failure at 38 over night my life, as a photographer was over.
For over a decade I could hardly focus( pardon the pun)on anything else, but survival and to be with my family.
We moved to Devon for the quiet life and I started landscape photography, the location was just to tempting, I then started to sell images and doing local photo shoots.
But as much as I love the tranquility, I got back into shooting bands, that's my life blood I feel alive when working within that medium.
Nothing to what I did before, but I'm lucky to be here and I'm building a business again and making contacts everyday.
Photography saved my life and my sanity, to an extent😜 Love these chats, makes me feel that as photographers we go through similar stuff, cheers Chris.
Hi Steven, thanks for the comment. What a journey you’re on! Amazing to think you photographed those iconic bands! Thanks 😀
Great philosophy Chris. Very much appreciated. Cheers, Sean.
Thanks so much!
This wwII series is wonderful, I have enjoyed every one! Thank you.
Love these thoughtful chat vids! life is so complex and for me quite negative the last few years.....work hard and little to show for it....
so sorry to hear that - I do hope life improves for you 🙏😊
@@ChrisOrange thanks Chris, no all is ok thanks, just a mundane 9-5 working as a monkey making those at the top rich while we battle on. No job satisfaction at all….thank goodness for photography to keep us sane ❤️
Absolutely - makes photography even more important 📷
The most successful people are the ones that fail the most!! We dont learn much from what we do well - we just go oh that worked!! But when we make mistakes we then go - gotta fix that
So true! Thanks 😃
Great thoughts again Chris. For me photography has been the one and only thing I believe I can do to a fairly decent standard, everything else I'm a bit rough around the edges at I do try lots of things, but they always end up with my grabbing a camera. My personal life is pretty average to be fair, I have a string of failed relationships, but I have three boys all grown up all doing life far better than I have they will have challenges but they're more rounded and stable than I'll ever be, until I get behind a camera and all my crap just melts away. I reckon without photography I'd be in dire straights, and not the band, i'm a musical car crash. 59 now split again at Crimbo, so it's time to chuck away my hopes of finding the rightish lass and just do what I know I'm decent at photography all day at work, all the time on my time. Love it.
Hi Paul, thanks so much for your comment. I’m so pleased that photography provides you with the therapy you need too - it’s so powerful, especially when we connect with nature through it. 😃
@@ChrisOrange spot on mate lifes crazy good to have something to keep us on track haha
Hi Chris. I’ve had many times in my life when things haven’t gone as I would have hoped. As you say, all our experiences bring us to here now. There aren’t such a thing as good or bad experiences, they are just experiences. The secret is to learn from them and use them to take us forward. The trick I’ve learned in my photography is to take lots of photos and learn from your mistakes. Hopefully we don’t make them again! Very good video Chris.
Thanks John - love that about how the good and bad experiences are all just experiences in the end - really insightful!
It's normal for freelancers. Just don't spend too much time overthinking. In moments of fear and lack of inspiration, a friend of mine says: _Get on your road roller, 1st gear in and slowly ahead!_
Nice - the mindset is so important
Great video
Thanks!
Thank you Chris, a great and thoughtful video. Not many of us take the time to examine our inner processes, ambitions, and fears about the creative process. This doesn't just apply to photography, but almost any field where creativity is necessary. That would include the medical profession, or even sales. Creativity often is where the solutions come from in both those fields. So some may have an office job and think this doesn't apply to them. Well, yes it does. You may have inherited a workflow and practices that the company is familiar and comfortable with, but lacks efficiency. Back in the day that happened to me. So I had a word with my boss about it. It was an older company and like an old fogey was rather set in its ways. But my boss said to me that, as long as I don't rock the boat, I could experiment in my department. Well, I rejigged things and became so efficient that 5 days per week work could now be compressed into one day. (There was stuff needed doing each day, but efficiency changed this so much that, adding all the days together, I was only doing one days work.)
I was given a pay rise for this! Even though I now took books and magazines into work to fill my time. I bugged other departments to take work and even (boring!) help with filing. But they were too set in their ways to expand my practices to other departments - even though I could have saved that company a packet in unnecessary job spaces, unnecessary computer time, unnecessary photocopy hire, etc. The savings could have been ploughed back into expanding the reach of the company and, through that, minimise job losses...
But this experience made me lose my sense of ambition and worth in the corporate environment, so I became a music teacher... However, this reinforces what you said: it is what we have gone through that makes us what we are today, and it is the launching pad for our future creativity.
You know, I think I'd enjoy a good chin wag with you drinking real ale down the pub. Trouble is, that would be an 8000 miles each way commute for me....
God bless!!
😊thank you, Chris, for being so transparent about fear! I have fought this wall that is there every day. I am learning the love of the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob gives me the peace to overcome. It has helped me greatly to reach my personal goals.
thanks so much for your comment. 😊
I’m sorry, I can’t take so many drama posts. Just do what you love and stop worrying so much.
Hi there, thanks for your comment, but I think you may be misunderstanding the videos. These are not drama posts, but real life situations that many face, and no one is forced to watch them. 😀
@@ChrisOrange an occasional video about difficulties we face as artists is absolutely fine. It just seems you have quite a lot of them. I’ve only watched part of one last year. It was too much drama. I’m trying to help you.
Thanks for comment - with the amount of messages I’m getting from people who find these films helpful, I’m very happy to keep speaking my mind. Please don’t watch my films if they annoy you. Best! Chris
Failure is just a Label!
maybe time to switch to another system.????
haha! I'm happy with my cameras thanks 😊🤣
Sorry, can't see myself changing from Fuji to anything else xD Compactness, style, colors, with small MF Voigtlander, there is anything I really need. Maybe try another lens? That's interesting
