Inside China's 'thought transformation' camps - BBC News

- The BBC has been given rare access to the vast system of highly secure facilities thought to be holding more than a million Muslims in China’s western region of Xinjiang.
Authorities there insist they are just training schools. But the BBC’s visit uncovers important evidence about the nature of the system and the conditions for the people inside it.
The BBC's China Correspondent John Sudworth sent this report.

"Yes, a policeman told me to sign up."
@Juke Chinese, you have to do whatever you want in your own land China, Eastern Turkistan aka Xinjiang is Uighur land invaded by Chinese in 1949.
Tibet invaded too.
Chinese must go home to China.
We are tired of endless Chinese immigration, just like Eu tired of arabs, go home Chinese.

Same thing happened in Algeria in the 1990s, my father was imprisoned because the neighbor made a false police call saying we were hiding terrorists from the GIA, the FIS' (Front Islamic du Salut, an Islamic party which won the first turn of the 1991 election, then were cancelled) armed branch. He had to pray in a cell with urine all over the floor. Many other people were tortured, sodomized, my grandfather owned a shop and the police would intimidate and steal food in this period. It was an all out civil war. They would pick people and imprison and interrogate them at random, and beat them, it was crazy if you study it. Protesters were getting shot at in the streets, tanks in the streets, mosques being surveilled at the Friday prayer and some closed, it was insane, then later they were bombing each other shooting each other.

i am a youth from Hong Kong, and i have travelled many different provinces in China. What's I could say for this video is that's video may have a great misleading to audiences. Before you watch this video, some facts you should know first,
1. China is a developing country, even thought it is the greatest economic country in the world, but its GDP / Person is still very low. Don't expect always having very good facilities, especially in those very small town.
2. China have great infrastructures in different city, but still have a lot of old building still not be renew. ( i think most of the village government still did had that budget for that as one of latest KPIs on village government is building public toilets )
So when the reporter described that it looks like a prison, then the man will feel angry as it is just as good as the living level compared with the average of local living environment to him. (There is another topic about economic development, i will not extend here, but you could try to treat it as a normal phenomena in village that still not well developed. i believe you wouldn't expect a place have high living level where's average salary level is lower then 300 USD per month)
3. There are a still lot of people who born 60 - 70s don't received education, but most of the job offered to those with at least primary education and that basic threshold made those people cannot easily fit in the society. in 10 yrs ago, when i travelled in China with my family, we are always need to keep our eyes on our properties as it was a lot of theft especial in tourist attraction. And sometime you could hear some news about brutally killing / kidnapping by ethnic minorities (Xinjiang minority is most of the case). You could search about Xinjiang cut cake may know more. A lot of bad news about some Xinjiang people selling cut cake, but not telling you the price. After they cut the cake, if you didn't pay for it, they will show the knife and i meat once in Yunnan in 2018 (Xinjiang minority as well) , an unbelievable experience hahaha, then i told my friends i almost die.
4. Those social issue that i mentioned is getting much progress now, it is much more safety and indeed i appreciate for what the government did. They provide a basic education opportunity for those adult by reeducation training. That could increase the credit / at least good in CV for them when they look for a job. As old generation Xinjiang minority did have good impression to public, it may have difficulty for those 40-60 seeking a decent job.
I know I couldn't change your mindset for China, but if you just look on the surface on one event , i believe you probably be misled to the wrong direction / led to a preset perception that the reporter want you to see.
As a person who understand a bit more about the situation , I couldn't do nothing but to tell you something more.
Yes, China have a lot of social problems but they all happen around the world. like poverty, public health issue, security issue, social inequity. US, Euro, Asia have the same problems as well or even worst. What we need to see is how the government take responsibility for handling those crisis under their capability ( financial / technical / operational / else ) . I don't think that Xinjiang is a human right issue, but a measurement that government trying to eliminate the inequity for those minority in a disadvantage in the society. We all got free education, why others couldn't even a basic version.
I couldn't say local government in China always did perfectly, there was always could have improvements but we know that it spare no effort in handling / responding the social problems. And all of my friends from Xinjiang give positive appraisal for the government performance.
I am not criticizing BBC just showing one face of the problem, but I really hope that people who watching this video could had an opportunity to use different angle to understand China, but not just the face that the report what to show.
I could understand most of the comments are come from nice persons with sympathy. you know, it is always have scandal if you want. But what we could do if we really want to understand a country / person is to travel there and have a talk with the local people with a humble attitude ( a basic respect that is very important ) , then you will know more about them but not just receive the message from a media. I believe you will see the different world if you really take this step forward.
Looking at this video I can tell they look like they were forced to this, but yeah china could do better in these reeducation camps instead of copying US corruption standards in abusing men and women like they do in guatalenmo prison. China needs to stop copying literally everything and stop being so corrupt and acting like fascist within both government and police.

I'm not a Muslim myself but I have been researching and following the information on what is going on in China for a while and I'm in deep shock. There is a genocide happening right in front of our eyes. I pray for justice for Uyghur people and Muslims and I hope your traditions and culture will survive.
Thank you for your concern. A few things, though:
First, you gotta know that calling this genocide is an insult to the actual genocide victims. Second, using google and reading news is not considered a "research" (you gotta know where those reports come from). Third, this video is a propaganda and full of mistranslations (you can checkout medium article titled "breaking down BBC visit on Xinjiang").
Also, let's not forget how all of this started. The Uyghurs are influenced by wahabbis, became extremists, and did what extremists do, striking terror on the Han Chinese. The CPC (or CCP) then responded by reeducating the suspected Uyghurs who became extremists to clean their Wahhabi influence. The west saw opportunity to bash China even more by accusing China of genocide towards Uyghurs.
If you think that what the CPC do is immoral, then you should consider how the west would react if they get the same event in their countries. The west will not do such hassle building reeducation camps to eliminate the extremism, instead they would choose the hard way: by bombing them to the stone age.
The alternative is so bad that the reeducation camp sounds really good for me. You got free food, free shelter, free education, and free time on weekends.

This is purely information distortion, if you really ask a person who can speak mandrain. The translation and information is so distorted. PLUS china has one child policy for HAN people (most chinese), but Uyghur has priority that they can give birth to how many they want. So that the Uyghur population is increasing significantly faster in China without restriction like anyone else. And you call it 'genocide'? Give priority in policy, and it is now called genocide? Great distortion.
These so called camp education is a way for dealing with terrorist activity. Do you know the background of the camp? the apparent violation of human right was only done on few prisoners in guantomanto to extract relevent information . it was not by any means a measure to convert them away from their religion or other.
also who china is torturing is main question, it is known for batlant censorship laws including banning criticism of party , making people disappear, and other.
2) US had a nasty sterilization program in 1910s iirc . but you can say the same .. it doesn't mean everyone will be victim of it.
@@fironfiron8843 1. This is not a justification for Guantanamo, either, and exposes her false face as a "human rights defender. Think about what you would say if Guantanamo happened in China.
In China, if you attack the Communist Party on the internet, the most you will get is someone deleting your comments (my comments are always deleted from youtube, and many anti-American accounts on Twitter are restricted). In reality, there are many people who express their discontent, no one will make you disappear. Chinese star Yao Chen, who has tens of millions of Weibo followers, posted something like "China is the land of evil" and is still active in the entertainment industry, and many similar things.
The only time you try to use your influence to incite people to overthrow the regime, that's when the government might do something. But I don't think it's much different from the US. Think Snowden, Assange, and Epstein who died for unknown reasons.
2. you are missing the point, the number of her children is enough to shock the Han Chinese, I have never seen a Han Chinese with so many children in the last 20 years. China has a one child policy, but that restriction is very lenient among ethnic minorities, including the Uighurs. If she were Han, she could not have had so many children. The incident proves that not only is there no sterilization of Uyghurs in China, but that births are encouraged. And of course the population growth figures prove this, much higher than the Han Chinese.

Excerpt from the book Operation Gladio: The Unholy Alliance between the Vatican, the CIA, and the Mafia by Paul L. Williams : "Throughout the 1990s, hundreds of Uyghurs were transported to Afghanistan by the CIA for training in guerrilla warfare by the mujahideen. When they returned to Xinjiang, they formed the East Turkistan Islamic Movement and came under Çatlı's expert direction. Graham Fuller, CIA superspy, offered this explanation for radicalizing the Chinese Muslims: The policy of guiding the evolution of Islam and of helping them [Muslims] against our adversaries worked marvelously well in Afghanistan against the Red Army. The same doctrines can still be used to destabilize what remains of Russian power, and especially to counter the Chinese influence in Central Asia. This policy of destabilization was devised by Bernard Lewis, an Oxford University specialist on Islamic studies, who called for the creation of an “Arc of Crisis” around the southern borders of the Soviet Union by empowering Muslim radicals to rebel against their Communist overlords."

What is there to hide? They are just being forced to take these lessons, that's the issue that the BBC is trying to expose. The moral argument from the West is that forcing people to sing, dance and paint while depriving them of their freedom is wrong. China's position is that by helping poor undereducated people learn valuable skills they can prevent the despair that leads to religious extremism and terrorism.

Why would they keep them in such highly protected building in the middle of nowhere, and why would there be people protesting against these "lessons"? @@RereAndRerun - No, at first I was being sarcastic, but then I contrasted that with the UK where British women are told to "shut up about grooming gang rapes for the sake of diversity." and I saw that China has a point to their argument. If people are educated with skills they will avoid despair that Islamist terrorist recruiters often use to their advantage against the government. So China puts education on the front burner, a temporary injustice though a long term helping hand. As Jesus said, "Give a man a fish, he eats for a day.
