    Hey man! I've been consuming a lot of content on note taking and obsidian from folks like Josh Duffney, Effective, Martin Adams, Linking Your Thinking, and Danny Hatcher. I was trying to remember how I first found out about obsidian and today, I was just suggested your video by the algorithms and I remembered IT WAS YOU! Thank you so much for sharing your processes because it really triggered a change in my thinking about this topic.
    And congrats on finishing Irvine's book. Didn't know you were into Stoicism. It's something that really made a difference going through cancer for me and brings a lot of peace to my (self-induced) chaotic life. Best of luck and keep it up man!

      I'm flattered that my videos were what introduced and hooked you to the world of Obsidian, it's nice to hear that you're diving deep into further understanding zettlekasten from different sources :)
      And yes! I'm a fan of the tranquillity and life satisfaction stoicism allows for. Hope you're living well now, maybe one day I'll embody the philosophy enough to have as much of an impact as it did for you :D Thank you for the wishes, hope my content can still be of use as you start to grow out of the beginner phase haha

    Watching this along with your free email course. Super helpful for clarifying my intentions with Obsidian. Decided to turn my first vault into an "experimental vault" and then have other vaults for major use-cases (like the note-taking you did here).

    • @itsjohnmavrick
      @itsjohnmavrick  5 місяців тому

      Why not combine them all into one out of curiosity and only have a separate experimental vault ?

    love your channel man... would love to see a video giving a tour of how you organize your vault... do you have a central "Home" note you use to launch into the vault from the highest level?

      In my "Trying obsidian for 7 days video", on the 7th day of my Obsidian vault I showcased my structure, and on day 4 i went over the structure I chose. It hasn't really changed since then other than the fact that I have more notes haha

    Great video! Couple of questions. I noticed that around 2:30 you create a new note and it instantly loads some kind of template. Could you shed some light on how to achieve that? :)
    You also seem to copy and paste a lot from your initial note. I've been told not to do that and write everything in my own words. Is that what you did initially or did you mostly paraphrase? What's your workflow while reading? I tend to write down way too much. The thing I struggle with most: How do you keep track of everything that's in your vault, all the possible (back)links you might miss? We can't possibly remember everything there is, right? And do you tend to reorganize the links between your notes so that they make more sense now that you know more of the subject? That actually costs me hours to do. The problem I have with it is that a certain idea can fit into multiple contexts so I tend do duplicate parts of a note or extend one with how it applies to the different contexts which confuses me as well sometimes. Do you have some tips? Thank you!

    • @itsjohnmavrick
      @itsjohnmavrick  2 роки тому

      there is a community plug in called templater which allows me to have a default template inserted whenever I create a new note :) I initially paraphrase and summarize the important things in what I read. this can be a mix of things I just didn't know before that I can use as a foundation for my vault and concept notes. generally you would want to not copy paste because summarizing and paraphrasing helps you think about the information rather than just passively absorbing. I also write too much which has made me procrastinate on turning book notes into my conceptual notes in obsidian. in terms of how a note maybe found in different contexts with other ideas, I either just create a quick line or two to connect it to the other main idea, or I create a new note that just includes both concepts and then link it back to both notes. I usually don't make super specific connections, I just prioritize having this specific information I store connected to their higher order ideas but sometimes the occasional connection does spring into mind especially if you've been learning a lot about that topic. I personally don't really see myself reformatting notes, I just add on to them or make new notes inside. hope this helps, I'm on 1.5 hours of sleep and I'm about to pass out but I wanted to reply before I forget to

      @@itsjohnmavrick Really appreciate this reply, man! I hope you slept well, sorry for keeping you awake. I can totally identify myself with the procrastination, whoops. The part about linking is where I get confused a bit. Linking to their higher order ideas I understand and it seems like you temporarily link notes together to clean it up later? If I understand it right. You say some connections spring in mind but my fear is that I miss out on connections to notes I've added long ago and have forgotten about but which may yield huge insights. How do you keep them in the loop? Especially when some links aren't that obvious. The most straightforward would be to only link it when you think of the link yourself I'd say... Again, thanks for taking so much time for me :)

    What's your backup cloud recommendations for obsidian?

    • @itsjohnmavrick
      @itsjohnmavrick  2 роки тому +3

      I currently use OneDrive's free 5GB and it's been working well, I have a video on it if you're interested :) You can probably use any big company cloud service like iCloud, Google Drive, etc

      @@itsjohnmavrick thank you so much! I've been trying to find the best backup for obsidian because I just got corrupted yesterday sadly. So this will be my top priority.

      Hi, I know you didn't specifically asked me BUT, I think this might be useful.
      For back-up: I created my vault in my google drive account (I have the drive mounted on my win10 pc, so like...the desktop service of google drive).
      For syncing between devices: I have a linux notebook and an android phone. So for syncing the PC with the Notebook I created a github repository from my obsidian vault in my google drive, and then cloned it in a folder in my notebook. For syncing I used the "Obsidian Git" community plugin in Obsidian (it needs some configuration, but it works). And then between my PC and phone I use Syncthing (much more straightfoward but I use it less)
      The github repository also works wonders as a back-up. However, it does require some minimal knowledge about GIT and how to work with it.

    • @itsjohnmavrick
      @itsjohnmavrick  2 роки тому

      @@FNTagle Yes! Obsidian Git is a good alternative, I just had troubles syncing it with my phone, but I like how you just used another program to handle that for you. I tried to get google drive to work, but it would only allow me to sync preset folders like my desktop, documents, images, etc.

      @@luckytv8541 Oh no :( And I assumed your comment was based on syncing rather than backup oops, yeah like Florencia said I would bite the bullet and try to learn Git as it's literally meant for version control haha

      keep track on the progress you've made on the book, whether it's currently being read, finished but no notes are taken, or notes are fully made
