Carolus Rex. The king's word was the law, but he still ate the same food as his soldiers. He despised the upper class wig, and preferred to go without it. He is a fascinating person.

Charles the 12th won what’s considered the greatest victory of swedish history, the battle of Narva, out numbered 1 to 3 vs the russians, appr 10000 caroleans vs 30000 russians. After the battle less than 1000 killed caroleans vs 9000 killed russians and 20000 captured.
Then they made the biggest misstake ever, they released the prisoners so the tsar could rebuild the army and later defeat the swedes in the battle of Poltava (also a fantastic song on the Carolus Rex album).

As a Lutheran king, Carolus Rex did not answer to the pope. He was chosen by God as gods representative on earth. Earlier the Swedish king Gustavus Adolphus (The lion from the north) was at war with the holy roman empire, and by extension the pope.

@@edvinoapelsino2526 well yes, but not involved in most of it. He was king of Sweden between 1611-1632 (He died in battle, "The battle of Lützen"), but Sweden only took part in the 30 years war between 1630-1648. (The war was between 1618-1648). And for those interested in some fun facts, when Gustav II Adolf died, his daughter became Queen, but she abdicated to become a nun in Rome, the funny thing is her father was protestant, and fought on the protestant side in the war, but she was catholic. Next in line of the throne was her cousin, who became Karl X Gustav, 1654, after his death his son Karl XI took over, 1660, and after his death Karl XII took over, 1697.

Charles 12 was a wonder of a man. A king who lived and fought whit his soldiers on the battlefield. The king himself were wounded in battle several times and killed many people in combat. Under his command Sweden beat armies up to four times its own numbers through superior training and hyper offensive tactics. Check out Sabaton History search for Caroleans if you want to learn more about this. The Song Caroleans prayer is also awsome and is about the soldiers of the Swedish King during the Carolean age.

    "From Wiki".
The song is about Charles XII, (Swedish: Karl XII) or Carolus Rex (1682 - 1718) he was the King of Sweden from 1697 to 1718, he came to power at the age of 15.
He was a military genius, and took on (at the time) 3 major European powers at the same time (Denmark-Norway, Russia & Saxony-Poland-Lithuania) in what would later be known as the great Northern War.
Leading the Swedish army against the alliance Charles won multiple victories despite being usually significantly outnumbered. A major victory over a Russian army some three times the size in 1700 at the Battle of Narva compelled Peter the Great to sue for peace which Charles then rejected. By 1706 Charles, now 24 years old, had forced all of his foes into submission including, in that year, a decisively devastating victory by Swedish forces under general Carl Gustav Rehnskiöld over a combined army of Saxony and Russia at the Battle of Fraustadt. Russia was now the sole remaining hostile power.
Charles' subsequent march on Moscow met with initial success as victory followed victory, the most significant of which was the Battle of Holowczyn where the smaller Swedish army routed a Russian army twice the size. The campaign ended with disaster when the Swedish army suffered heavy losses to a Russian force more than twice its size at Poltava. Charles had been incapacitated by a wound prior to the battle, rendering him unable to take command. The defeat was followed by the Surrender at Perevolochna. Charles spent the following years in exile in the Ottoman Empire before returning to lead an assault on Norway, trying to evict the Danish king from the war once more in order to aim all his forces at the Russians. Two campaigns met with frustration and ultimate failure, concluding with his death at the Siege of Fredriksten in 1718. At the time, most of the Swedish Empire was under foreign military occupation, though Sweden itself was still free. This situation was later formalized, albeit moderated in the subsequent Treaty of Nystad. The result was the end of the Swedish Empire, and also of its effectively organized absolute monarchy and war machine, commencing a parliamentary government unique for continental Europe, which would last for half a century until royal autocracy was restored by Gustav III.
Charles was forced to take exile in the Ottoman Empire for 5 years. Meanwhile, Russia and Poland regained and expanded their borders. Great Britain, an adversary of Sweden, defected from its alliance obligations while Prussia attacked Swedish holdings in Germany. Russia occupied Finland (the Greater Wrath 1713-1721). After defeats of the Swedish army, consisting mainly of Finnish troops in the Battle of Pälkäne 1713 and the Battle of Storkyro 1714, the military, administration and clergymen escaped from Finland, which fell under Russian military regime.
The Swedish Council of State (government) and Estates/Diet (Parliament) tried to keep the beleaguered Sweden somehow organized and independent. Eventually, in the autumn of 1714, their warning letter reached him. In it, those executive and legislative bodies told the absentee King that unless he quickly returned to Sweden, they would independently conclude an achievable peace treaty with Russia, Poland and Denmark. This stark admonition prompted Charles to rush back to Sweden.
After five years away, Charles arrived in Sweden to find his homeland at war with Russia, Saxony, Hannover, Great Britain and Denmark. Sweden's western enemies attacked southern and western Sweden while Russian forces traveled across Finland to attack the Stockholm district. For the first time, Sweden found itself in a defensive war. Charles' plan was to attack Denmark by striking at her possessions in Norway. It was hoped that by cutting Denmark's Norwegian supply lines the Danes would be compelled to withdraw their forces from Swedish Scania.[citation needed]
Charles invaded Norway in 1716 with a combined force of 7,000 men. He occupied the capital of Christiania, (modern Oslo), and laid siege to the Akershus fortress there. Due to a lack of heavy siege cannons he was unable to dislodge the Norwegian forces inside. After suffering significant losses of men and materiel, Charles was forced to retreat from the capital on 29 April. In the following mid-May, Charles invaded again, this time striking the border town of Fredrikshald, now Halden, in an attempt to capture the fortress of Fredriksten. The attacking Swedes came under heavy cannon fire from the fortress and were forced to withdraw when the Norwegians set the town of Fredrikshald on fire. Swedish casualties in Fredrikshald were estimated at 500 men. While the siege at Fredrikshald was underway, the Swedish supply fleet was attacked and defeated by Tordenskjold in the Battle of Dynekilen
In 1718 Charles once more invaded Norway. With a main force of 40,000 men, he again laid siege to the fortress of Fredriksten overlooking the town of Fredrikshald. Charles was shot in the head and killed during the siege, while he was inspecting trenches. The invasion was abandoned, and Charles' body was returned to Sweden. A second force, under Carl Gustaf Armfeldt, marched against Trondheim with 10,000 men but was forced to retreat. In the march that ensued, many of the 5,800 remaining men perished in a severe winter storm.

Of course he was a dictator, he was King by the grace of God, mening he answered to no one but God and could do what ever he pleased. He was above everything and everyone.
As was all the other monarchs around Europe. You could say they didn't see eye to eye about that :)
On the same time he was a very humble man, dressed in a plain uniform and rather ate with his men then with the rich and famous. As Divine monarchs go, he was a decent one, respected the common man (to a point at least) and didn't abuse his power that much. In comparison there were som first class a-holes among the european royals throughout time.

Nino CuricNo, this is 50 years after the 30 years war ended (he was coronated in 1697 and the 30 years war ended in 1648. 1648 is a damn good track on Carolus Rex by the way, you should do a reaction on that).
After the 30 years war Carolus father, Karl (Charles) XI spent a couple of decades reinventing and rebuilding Sweden in the shape of a modern superpower. Part of that reshaping was forcing both the nobility and the church (which was Lutheran by the way, Sweden told the Pope to go f-k himself almost 200 years earlier in 1527) into submission and removing the last checks and balances that anyone had on the royal power, makingKarl XII (Carolus, Charles XII etc) Swedens first true king by Divine right. According to the creed preached by the Swedish Church he was chosen by heaven and answered to no one except to God.
In hindsight maybe not the best idea ever, but it was a very popular one amongst the European monarchs at the time (divine right in general that is, they tended to disagree amongst themselves about who was most chosen by God)

The song is really about Charles XII megalomaniac vision of him self as a divinely appointed ruler. He truly believed he was chosen by God to sit on the swedish throne and that God had given him a mission to conquer europe and rule everything from Sweden. He was an out of this world inspiration to his soldiers as he actually led many charges in person on the battlefield, though perhaps not as brilliant a strategic mind as he was inspiring. His fanatic conviction in him self encouraged his army to win battles that, on a rational basis, should had been impossible to win. He encapsules the concept of megalomania.

Because when it all boils down to it it was as always about conquest of land and power, the religious reasons given were mostly just windowdressing to get the civilians to accept the situation and get the soldiers to be motivated to fight.
