2:00 a finale track that sounds like a finale THAT, EXACTLY THAT Mortal Man sounds like the end of a hero's story after finding the resolution of everything, beautifully constructed
This track was mindblowing already but, when Pacs voice came in...i jumped back and then listened to the whole conversation like "what is this magnificent artifact ive stumbled upon?!" Jaw to the floor....epic. Went out to search for the vinyl the next day~
I’ll literally never forget where I was when I was first listening to this album and heard tupac’s voice. immediate tears, like a switch flipped, like a shock to my system. I still cry most every time. 10
Mortal Man is one of my favorite Kendrick Lamar songs. Everything from the hook, the horns, the background vocals and that incredible bass line 😮💨. 10/10 track to end a 10/10 album. Best rap album ever imo 🙌🏾
A detail that i just caught onto is that at the start of the interview where they talk about the ground, the first instrument to come in is the bass, which is often the foundation of a song.
In one of the interviews promoting the album Kendrick revealed that he reached out to Tupac's mother to ask for her permission to use the interview for the song because he wanted to make sure he wasn't disrespecting her son's legacy, and that has been the golden standard for me in terms of paying tribute to someone It's also super interesting that this album gained him the reputation of being "preachy and holier-than-thou", when songs like these walls, u, how much a dollar cost, the blacker the berry, etc. are explicitly about him being a morally grey (dare I say conflicted) person
5:05 This is one of those "I remember when I heard it the first time" verses and possibly the first time after consuming a great deal of his music that I actually LISTENED to how eloquent and talented a lyricist and storyteller K-Dot is. Around this time is when I started seriously considering him in my hip hop GOAT conversations and can now say this has aged marvelously.
Remember when Kendrick visited South Africa and performed GKMC I'm so glad Kendrick is the Leader of hiphop coz you have to be activist to be the King of hiphop Coz Cole, drake would go to africa to party or vibes. Kendrick went to africa and it broadened his perspective and made his Music powerful and impactful...
You know what?? Hell yeah... As an astro girly (I'm a gemini) and fairly new to the rap scene, Kendrick's mind fascinates me so much. I can see there's a delusional side to him (his pisces moon). I'm obsessed y'all ngl
thanks for this series, Derapy, i really enjoyed it! to pimp a butterfly is a very special piece of pure artistry, that's for sure. - sincerely, a derp
Nelson Mandela(Nelly M.) is the most world renowned of the struggle stalwarts here in S.A. but when we talk about loyalty, he is the worst example. His wife spent the 27 years he was in prison, raising their children, being harassed by the Apartheid police, and continuing the resistance of the ANC. Which was very heavily led by women in the 70s and 80s. But once he got released, he stood by as her name was smeared by the Apartheid government, divorced her to clear his 'reputation' from her, and then married Graca Machel. It was accepted doctrine by the ANC in the 90s and 2000s that Winnie was violent and brought the movement down by her actions. It took a lot of work to undo that propaganda. A nasty little piece of work is what Mandela is. Who Kendrick is a better reflection of is Steve Biko (he is more alike to Malcom X), but he doesn't know enough of our history to know that, and I wouldn't expect him to.
Absolutely been beautiful to see your journey on Kendrick. TPAB is considered one of the best albums of all time in my mind. It genuinely transcends anything I've heard before or since. If GKMC made me a K. Dot Fan, TPAB solidified it, so to see someone who before the beef was like the polar opposite experience come to a similar realization has been a treat, and just think all of this wouldn't of happened if Future and Metro didn't enlist Kendrick on Like That. Wild. Congrats on the 30K dude, deserved.
the album was initially planned to be called to pimp a caterpillar as an acronym for tupac but I respect TPAB so much more, for the surprise at the end if nothing else
Anything less than a 10 would be insincere. This album was what made Dot my favorite. It still chokes me up in moments, I had just discovered the subject that would become my undergrad major (sociology) and this album validated everything I was feeling in that moment in my life, experiencing the blow of the Zimmerman verdict and being shocked only to have my Black dad that I had just connected with for the first time in life say “get used to it. These won’t go your way for the rest of your life (he’s kinda a jerk) but then seeing more cases go the same way after that up until 2020… and we’re far from done. GKMC is incredible, but I grew up in Ontario CA next to Rancho Cucamonga, pretty nice house but neighborhoods surrounding me could be a little tough… aka I don’t relate to the trauma in GKMC, maybe 25% or less, but TPAB was the first time I could relate to Dot. Thanks for the series!
The billboard list needs Tupac, DAMN. But #9 makes sure he lives on, yeah The first time I heard the conversation between Kendrick and Tupac, it absolutely blew me away
holy shit the song euphoria is literally kendrick saying that word in success after baiting drake into mentioning tupac, giving him the perfect excuse to represent the west coast as much as he has been. how am I still discovering entendres
No Skips for me with this Album. My Favorite and Despite people liking GKMC more... TPAB is undeniably his best and one of the best Rap albums ever made Also, I love how Kendrick pieced together these questions he asked Tupac to make his answers align just about perfect to what Kendrick asked... 🐐
A prophet once asked me if i indeed liked the video, the editor had already told me to so… i wonder if he misused his influence or if me liking the video was fate
If all I went by is your album reviews I would assume that all hip hop was revolutionary art Review some bad albums so we have something to compare these greats against
I remember the first time I ever heard of Kendrick Lamar was way back when he said one night he awoke to the ghost of 2Pac who told him to write Section.80. So when I heard this for the first time I couldn’t help but think it was such a full circle moment
"If I try in the court of law? If the industry cut me off?" 21 Questions, but different. He's doing exactly what his Mam asked him to do. "Give back with your words of encouragement. And that's the best way to give back to your city." King Kendrick!! 🤴🏾💯
I appreciate the video, but I was disappointed when you said you were going to be brief when you could possibly go much further into the conversation between Kendrick and Tupac and poem. We are here to listen to some long analysis, I just feel like when 75% the video is the song, it doesn't feel like enough care/time was put into the the analysis portion. I know you got it into you, just look at the previous videos that you did on to pimp a butterfly. Always grateful about your vids, but you know, go hard! Do your thing!
I don't know if Disney would allow you to do it, however, I think it would be interesting if you covered the Black Panther soundtrack. I remember when it dropped. The Bay Area was pleased 😂

I am anoyed by a great song with what i see as disrespect. Maybe it's not, but the idea of being loved like 'Nelson' is genuinely baffling. A Liberator, freedom fighter, the father of a nation and the symbol of the resistance against apartheid having the same amount (even kind) of love as a singer is just delusionsal.
Its still weird to me that as much as I am still convinced this is his BEST Album, period..... Just how bad the closing track is in comparison to the rest of the tracklist. Like, Without the 2pac interview its honestly just like.... a strong 6, light 7, in there somewhere? The perfect outro for the album
The first time I heard this album I asked my cousin why the album was called “to pimp a butterfly”. All he said was “wait til the end”
