Subaru’s fight with Garfiel brought forth a brand new power. But what you may not have noticed was the sacrifice that came before it. A choice that ended up severing Subaru’s connection to one of the only tools he had at his disposal. It’s one of the many things we’ll talk about as we go over what the cut content season 2 episode 16 of Re: Zero!

Just a reminder that Felix reminding Subaru to not use his gate was just around 3-4 days ago in real time. And Subaru just arrived in Sanctuary like a day ago in real time.

Arc 1 - 1 day
Interlude 1 - ~12 hrs
Arc 2 - 5 days
Interlude 2 - 1 month
Arc 3 - ~1 week
Interlude 3 - 3-4 days
Arc 4 - i actually dk how long it is yet but rn it is around 2 days long. The longest that Subaru had in this arc was reaching ~4 days before dying.
The LN is currently entering it's 7th Arc. Therefore we have at least 2 full seasons of Re:Zero coming in the works. I am hoping they at least take a few years off before animating each arcs.

Rip Subarus gate, tho it’s a worth trade off when you think he can acquire more authorities with each arch bishop he defeats. Unlike petelguese Subaru is actually seems compatible or at least can withstand his witch factor, hence why he still has his sanity. The anime did this scene beautifully and I can’t wait to see volume 14 animated
I can't believe Petelgeuse even had the Sloth factor, he is like the least Slothful character in the series.

I think the "Unseen Providence " (Aka witch factor) drains mana when you use it... so i guess Subaru does not have to worry about mana overload

Nice theory, but Unseen Providence actually does not drain mana. It does take a physical toll on Subaru because of how incompatible he is with it though.

I met a guy in college that I though was weird, he had a full beard and used to say outlandish things. One day we found out that he was 18 years old and our first thoughts were "Oh that explains it!" his actions seemed normal afterwards we though he was like 25 acting extremely childish for his age lmao. This series came a long way since it firstly aired in 2016 back when everyone treated Subaru as a simp, weak and useless. Now we got to see his character growth and how powerful his determination can be.
I want to make an undertale reference but that might not be appropriate.
I mean, I still think he's all of those things tbh. I'm just not a fan of Subaru.

In every arc Subaru was pointed to make a choose: one represents sin, the other a quality; be at this point of the story, means he was diligent from that scene of arc 3, and while he can't be compatible with Sloth for this, neither can become mad because of it

I can truly appreciate a series that puts so much effort into expanding onto their minor/major characters.
Catboy's backstory was one of the saddest in the series but the conclusion felt so satisfying.
And let's admit it, doesn't matter if you're a guy or a girl; Garfiel's smile is freaking beautiful.
Garfiel is a major character from here on and arc 5 is the arc where Garfiel is a necessity

Re:Zero may be leaving some stuff out but its still a fantastic adaption and every episode just keeps getting better, also major kudos to the director/stuido
for being so willing to sacrifice its OP/ED to squeeze out every last moment to make sure episodes hit all the right emotional beats.

@@pixels_buh I'm not sure if the OP will change or not but if they don't show it the reason is usually to maximize the time they have for story in an episode.
Most episodes are 21 minutes long and 3 of those minutes are devoted to the OP/EDs.
Cliff hangers are pretty common but could you imagine if Rem's speech in season 1 getting cut off 3 minutes early and people having to wait a week to see the conclusion?
I doubt the scene would be anywhere near as impactful if it was broken up over 2 episodes.

i love how garfiel went to someone that was disliked, a heartless cruel killer, to someone who we genuinely felt bad for and knew was a very good person

Fun fact: In the WN, the sloth authority actually activated at the part just before the great rabbit reveal when Garfiel first went into his golden tiger form to stop Subaru from leaving with the villagers. At the time, he didn't know it happened.
I misded to things to be discussed:
1) how Subaru forced himself through the barrier
2) how he defiled Echidonas tomb after all she did for him
1) Echidna said because of his witch factor that he entered the tomb unharmed. Reference is S2E3.

1) no. It was not the Witch-factor. That one helped him to stay in her Windows-desktop-realm. In addition, she had granted him before access to the tomb and allowed him to take her trial, but she revoked both after his refusal to make the contract with her (going Greed if). Thereafter, he tried to enter and hit an invisible barrier which gave him a nosebleed. Afterwards, he forced himself through the barrier despite the pain!
The fact that he didn't get torn up like Roswaal is because he has an unusually low magical aptitude and the damage is directly proportional to mana...

So that's why Roswaal was badly injured, I thought it's just because he doesn't have any protections like witch factors. And that solves why Patrasche also wasn't badly injured as Roswaal, I had that in the back of my mind for a while.

This episode is so good! Most fans like the shock and gore, but the character depth and growth is what we really come for. Watching Subaru mentally overwhelm Garfiel was so satisfying, and I genuinely feel bad for Garfiel despite how he thrashed all those people in part 1.
if i remember correctly though in the web novel, grafield did talk a bit with echidna in his trials and this time she was more gentle to him than then the other time.

Ok got to pause at the 8 minute mark to comment on how much effort this must have took. You found matching clips from other anime and recreated the scene for us. It would have been so much easier to just take stills of the fight and describe it that way but you went the extra mile and for that I am grateful. Your channel is the reason I got into re zero and I still come back for all the stuff I missed haha.

The burden of Garfiel's transformation is more than the just making him dumber or think less, it also makes him a bigger target. Him being a bigger target was a major factor that Ram pounded into him during their battle.

especially in the fight between Subaru and Garf
if the episode had more time this could have been the best episode of the season.

the cuts in this episode greatly diminishes the moment which was one of my favorite in the series

That was the same in s1 this is the problame when you are adapting LN you can not put evrything.
I think there will be many add on the next episode for explaining to make can connect dot to dot in the story. Most likely some people wanna buy this novel so it's still has good and bad for this series and with how the world right now (covid) they still do good job.

there's alot of plot to cover in the anime so they will miss details. basically every anime misses alot of details from the source material. it would be worse if they didn't get the extra couple minutes per episode.. it would if been kinda bad tbh

I love how Rem always has to be nice in such backhanded ways. She's like the epitome of the tsundere trope, but she's all tsun with little to no dere. Beatrice seems to be much the same, but her personality is different enough that the two are unique.

I'd really liked to watch the fight as it was in the LN, I really miss to see Subaru throw actual human punches and kicks, they looked so... clean/crude? I'm not sure of the term, but I really liked them in scenes likes Subaru vs that 3 dudes and Subaru vs Elsa and even the punch Subaru threw to Petelgeuse in his beast form.
It would've been amazing to see another hand to hand fight between 2 humanoids
