- SERE Every Day Carry Items. Cross referenced with the Ranger Handbook Survival Chapter and SERE training, this is my EDC based off of both schools. You really don’t need much if you have the knowledge, skills, and techniques to survive. EDC can effect survival as well as be concealed or carried so as to maintain a low profile. Utilize resources and understand the environment you’re in makes money on the back end of going lighter. Basic items used in a big way! Enjoy!

Reading glasses is my #6 edc item
Hell, here I am trying to get crap out of my pockets lol. As a nurse my edc consists of- spyderco delica 4, lapg flashlight, bic style lighter, glases cloth because eye glasses. All the fun stuff is in my car trunk, and I carry a small jump bag of trauma stuff with a few extras on my shoulder. Never thought of cordage in the pocket tho, good idea. Thanks man. Rangers lead the way.
Really enjoy the thought and information you share. Thank you! Talking about the cordage. My dad was in the Army Airforce during WWII and growing up I remember he was forever using or had paracord around. After his passing I still come across the paracord among things in the garage. I find myself keeping some around, very useful!
when i was a kid, i used to play in the woods all day and have to be back in the evenings. so, obviously, you learn that the sun goes from east to west and sets further north during the summer and further south during the winter.....
....so, with that, its fairly easy to tell if its morning, late morning, noon, afternoon, evening and night if you arent too far north or south and if you were conscious all day.
thus, you kind of should always have your bearing with that info, unless it's super cloudy. if its before noon, heading toward the sun is to move east. if its noon, the sun isnt directly above and its winter, then the sun is to the south...if it's hot, it's to the north. if its afternoon, heading towards the sun sets you off to the west.
so, if you have a watch and can tell what time it is and you know which hemisphere you're on and the time if year, you can look at the watch, then the sun and know which way is which.....
I grew up the same way. And my parents always taught me to learn my directions.
My friends are always shocked I always know which direction I’m facing lol to me how could you not know? A few weeks ago we took a trip to another city and hangout in the downtown and at the end of the night they insisted we parked the car a certain direction and I told them with 100% confidence they were wrong and it was this other way. And they took a “chance” in their eyes and listened to me and there it was and they were dumbfounded lol This was after walking all over the place and I guess that turned them around. My buddy almost bet money and I should’ve let it, but I told him not to do it. The directions never change and I’ve made myself always know which direction I’m facing. Even in outdoor settings like you said with the sun. Being aware of your surroundings and having a sense of direction doesn’t seem like a skill people would lose, but apparently the vast majority of people have no idea. Which is so weird to me.
I grew up running through the woods too, but one time I made the mistake of not paying attention to my direction. We were caving and had to walk a mile into the woods to the entrance. The day was sunny and probably 60°. I assumed our leader knew his way back out. I noticed on the way in that there was a strange looking tree. It was dark when we came out. The temperature had dropped below freezing and we were damp and dressed for 54° cave temps. After we passed the tree the second time, I sat down with my light off and watched the group wander around the field for 10-15 minutes. By that time I was freezing. When they came by again I jumped out and scared them, then showed them which direction was "home". Watching them I figured out the problem. The trail was hidden by a cut in a hedgerow we had come through. Taught me to never rely on a "leader" for directions. Always be aware.

I used that type of cord around the sheath of my Mora. It actually holds in 20ft of 50# test fishing line, 2 hooks and 2 leaders along with 1 razor blade and a "Ferro" rod with gorilla tape handle. Like $30 survival knife....home made.
A cool S.E.R.E. piece I just found is an ASR folding ceramic knife, which is beyond sharp, small, and could go through a Metal Detector even.
It has a downside, edge chips if you are not careful.

love to see your tactical kit (rifle, pistol setup, knives, trauma) blended with survival/bushcraft kit.
It's been a couple weeks since I saw your Videos on S.E.R.E. stuff and all the others I watched on this subject, so I apologize if I repeat some stuff but I was thinking of a few ideas- for me it started 20 some years ago attempting to make my Wallet of all things into a Survival Kit now a S.E.R.E. Kit as well, some things I got in there are a Fresnal Magnifier, Waterproof Band-Aids, A Grim Workshop Brand Flat HandCuff Key MicroTool- (Very Small), Paper Clips for Picks and anything you can think of to make out of them, Safety Pins for improvised Fishing Hooks and repairs, a 5.11 Brand EDT KeyChain Multi-Tool which is flat and has a Prybar built-in the end and fits in the wallet taped to an old credit card, A Black Scout Survival Brand Dog Tag Entry Tool Set also taped to the card which has a Saw and two Bogota's that pop out for locks, I have a separate old credit card with one side wrapped in 3M Electrical Tape and the other side of it wrapped in T-Rex brute force Duct Tape, I have two 'Leatherman by the Numbers' flat Multi-Tools also taped to a card the 3 and the 7 Models which give me Metric and American Wrenches, And my favorite tool of all the one I like and recommend the most is a 4" Diablo Brand 8TPI part #DS0408CF Reciprocating Saw Blade that can go through Steel up to 1/2" or Wood just as easily and fits easily in my wallet, it is thicker and taller than most Reciprocating blades so it does not bend and you have plenty to hold on to because it is taller in height than a standard blade. All this easily fits in my RFID Wallet and I don't even notice it. As I think you mentioned the Layering aspect if your actually in that situation to do of course, some Green Berets that could not keep there mouths shut leaked how they put certain items behind their velcro flags which I am sure the Seals do to but an even trickier method is to take large bandage with fake blood on it and hide some of this stuff behind it. If I pass even one idea on to anybody it just made my day, I love this Subject and Survival and I like your Energy and Enthusiasm which one cannot fake, Keep up the good work fellow Soldier!

A laser pointer would also be a good pocket sized signaling device at night, especially those bright green ones. Pilots complain all the time about people shining laser pointers into the cockpit. It might also be able to signal amongst the clouds if there's heavy cover.

With you on that one. Love the early Leathermans. Had the PST, PST II, Supertool 200 and now the 300. These are tools. Beyond this, they are all gadgets. There is a world of difference.

A cutting implement? As in knife, right? ;-) Actually, after 71 years in the outdoors, I only carry what experience has proven necessary. Shelter (big plastic bag), Water (ziplocks and purification tabs), Fire (Bic-type lighter), and Food (power bars). I always have a knife in my pocket, along with a bandanna, and a Surefire Sidekick mini-light. All weigh less than a pound and fit in your pockets.
Why you need the bandanna for if you don't mind me asking.

Great info. I got the dark face, digital version of your watch. It has a compass etc. In an emergency I would never remember how to find direction.
I have four of the five on me always except in bed. I do need a good watch. My last several watches were Casio electronic models. I want a Timex. I liked the show today and look forward to your additional shows.

I work in an office environment, so a multitool would look weird on my belt. I do carry a pocket knife and a mini-multitool (actually two - Gerber and SOG) in my backpack, which is generally always with me. I may need to slip a signaling mirror in there also! Hooah (11B40, Ret.)
Personally I'd add a decent lighter with some Gorrilla Tape wrapped around it to that list.
Sparking devices are very nice to have, but they have their limitations.
I'm not sure how I missed this one, but I'm glad I found it while searching your play lists. Just a thought here, have you ever thought about making those 550 boot laces into a fishing kit? I've been kicking around an idea I've had for a while, and haven't seen anyone do this.
I was thinking of removing all but one of the guts of the 550, and then taking some good braided 30 lbs test fishing line, and making 8 to 10 loops that are the length of the 550 outer shell, and if the outer shell is say 5 feet long and you have 10 loops, that's 50 continuous feet of braided fishing line., and braided line is MUCH smaller than the guts of 550.
Then tie the fishing line to the one cord that was left inside the shell, and use it to pull the fishing line back inside the shell.
Then on each end of the boot lace, add two small split shot sinkers, four total, and then melt the ends closed.
Then take duct tape, and fold it over on itself with say 4 or 5 small #8 fishhooks, and place a small hole in the tape, and place it under the eyelets of your boot, and run the lace through it and now the hooks are safely stored and sandwiched on your boot and are always there if needed.
One boot lace can have the fishing line and kit, and the other can have say 40 feet of 200 lbs test Technora cord which is a little smaller than the guts of 550, and maybe one VERY thin 2 or 3 ply waxed jute twine for fire starting which is about the same size as one strand of the guts of 550, and a small toggle type ferro rod fire starter with a hole in it, laced somewhere on the boot where it fits best for each person, and maybe even a small one inch long section of a hacksaw blade for a striker.
I think boots are a seriously overlooked area to place at least some kit on you and ALWAYS have it with you. I mean NO ONE goes anywhere without their boots, and I'm sure others would have great ideas as well. Anyway, just a thought and maybe make a good video like you always have, and kit videos get the most views. Keep up the great work.
finally got my Surge with the bits kit. very happy. it's a little bulky but I'm OK with that. the quality is there
Would you use a swisschamp alternatively? More tools but smaller pliers, magnifier to start a fire, blade can be used as mirror and signaling, easy to sharpen, its not as heavy duty but quite versatile.

1 of the funniest things to me is that almost nobody knows how to open a can with the can opener in a multi tool. Most people think its for bottle caps lol.

gOOD SETUP
One is none. I would always have to have a Buck 110 or large pocket clip knife. I don't think I've gone a day since I was 8 years old without a knife in my pocket, 2 later in my life. The multi tool is nice, & I would always take one if possible, but never as my only one type knife.
A father was on a beach with his son, a fog rolled in along with a quickly rising tide,he soon lost his bearings of where to escape the rising water! He drown along with his young son on his shoulders because he didn’t know which direction to go to escape the rising tide!Even a basic button compass would have saved this man and his child ! Never underestimate the need for the 5 basic essentials!

Know WHEN to get out of Dodge City.
Know HOW to get out of Dodge.
If he had done his homework work (and knowing exactly what the tides are when your on a beach is a very good idea) and had a plan, he wouldn't have got his son and himself Darwined.

This civilian, who lives in the city and without Survival experience, look on his watch, look at the sun and say something like "The sun must be in S.E.E., so I go direction N"
I would suggest to carry also a small bar magnet (less than half an inch long) on a piece of string to find north when there is no sun available (think of the POW's in WWII) They learned to use a cup of water and a little piece of wood, but that piece of string works faster.

I used titan paracord as laces for a long time. Still have it on my ruck boots. The wire breaks after prolonged use. Planning a future video for escape items.

Classic 550 paracord is ok BUT if you can swap to multi-tasking Titan cord and have more versatile strands inside then classic 550 would make no sense. I personally preferred Parapocalypse by Atwood Rope than Titan but if someone's desperate for the copper wire then Atwood don't have it.

I prefer a dual analog/digital watch. For the past several years I’ve used G-Shock XL Series OD green and desert tan. Fairly affordable. The digital is good for date-time-group and measuring time for any purpose. The analog is good for hasty navigation so I’m never without a compass.

Rather than having a hank of paracord in your pocket, how about a woven paracord belt? I got one from miltech and it is 20 metres when unravelled.

I wanted to watch this video, but it’s totally black on my iPad screen. When I grab the bar on the bottom to fast forward, I can see video in the thumbnail but I can’t see the overall video. Any idea why?
I took a look and the video is still up and working on my end. Not sure what the issue may be. I've had that problem with other people's videos. Possibly take a look and closing the browser and re-opening everything. Also, check your VPN if you have one, disconnect and reconnect. If that fails try another device and see if it works and maybe it might be your iPad.

Argue utility all day long, what are the metrics? Since there's no weight or size metric, why not take a backhoe? Metric has to include weight and size in the denominator, otherwise the chosen EDC item will simply grow to infinity. Value per gram or value per cm^3? What is value? Make a list and prioritize? Give each capability a score? Simply can't believe SERE is teaching students to carry around HE-taped together hunks of metal? Surely, similar functionality can be had at half the weight? Maybe one-tenth?
Never Ever possess on your person less than 50' of P cord.
Where would you keep it, and what would you need in a n every day scenario with 50’ of it? I’m just asking because I keep roughly 10’ of it and outside of building a makeshift shelter I don’t see why I would necessarily need more where I am.

Even a small fixed blade knife that can be concealed easily is better than just the knife blade in a multi tool. I have NO problem with a multi tool but i would never ever choose the blade in a multi tool over a real actual knife, and THAT IS COMMON SENSE, son, if you live long enough you will learn that but the way you're going, you're gonna learn it the hard way
I’d argue a multi-tool offers a greater value to the average survivor as opposed to a small fixed blade by way of multiple tools. Nothing wrong with a fixed blade, I often carry one. I’ve noticed on average I go for the multi-tool more than a fixed blade. I’d also argue user knowledge and skill also directly effects the use and choice of tool e.g. I would not baton with the small blade on a learherman just like I wouldn’t use a small fixed blade to baton a log. Environment matters as well and understanding natural materials. In NW Iowa where this video was made I’d prb go for a fixed blade based on temperature and resources. I’m currently in the high desert and honestly use my leatherman a majority of the time. Quite frankly, I hardly need a knife here!

As he mentioned for where he is, he rarely has to use a knife where he lives, perhaps where you live a fixed blade knife is better. There is no one size fits all when it comes to knives, every situation is different. Look up "METT T", pay special attention to the "M" the "E" and the second "T".
Rowdy, last year, on the _Alone_ TV show on the History Channel, the winner used the knife on a Leatherman to completely butcher a moose and do a ton of bushcraft and hunting work. The pliers and some wire make trapping easy.
He was the winner and got paid $500,000.
