One of my all time favorite horror esc movies is Pulse (the original Japanese version, NOT the American remake!!) it’s so incredibly psychological, and so eerie and unsettling. The buildup of some of the scenes are so well done. The sounds, the atmosphere, it’s literally perfect. Highly HIGHLY recommend

I know My Heart Is a Chainsaw, or, really, Stephen Graham Jones's writing, is divisive, but I still get excited whenever I see people picking it up, only to get heartbroken when they hate it 😂 I love SGJ and I think MHIaCS is so well done, but I also 100% understand why people don't like it. When it comes to his work, it very much seems to be you either vibe with it or you don't. That sounds so awful and like I'm making excuses, but like you said; both haters and lovers tend to bring up the same points, and it's really all about either you're feeling what he's doing or you don't, and if you don't, that's it, nothing really to be done about it. Something I do think might help some people is truly accepting and understanding that Jade is, like you said, a deeply hurt and harmed child, who lives in a completely dissociative state, and the story isn't just her point of view, the whole storytelling is done through that lens. So as a, presumably, relatively mentally well person, it can be very difficult to get into that frame of mind. Another book from SGJ that utilizes this perspective is The Least of My Scars, and I always recommend this one to people who think Chainsaw is too slow. The Least of My Scars is just as weird, weirder, even, but with a lot more going on. So, if you're willing to give SGJ another shot, maybe try that one. There's a lot more to say about his writing and why it is the way it is, and why the way it is isn't actually 'bad' (he's a very skilled writer), but if you want to read an essay about him and his work, I'm sure you can find that yourself, I'm not here to lecture (I say as I've written out this massive comment) or imply that you are 'wrong' for disliking this book.

Loooove this. I had finally gotten my screen time down to 3 hours a day (much better than a few months ago, which was 22...) and started reading loads of books. But, I've been in a slump lately so it's taken me a month or two to finish ONE book. Idk if It's the books I'm reading, or I'm just chronically online.
hereditary, the vvitch, and the lighthouse are some of my very favorites. im not a huge slasher person but i enjoyed X! not my favorite but not bad. also i loved the end of everything!! hozier wrote no plan and put her name is there and she thanks him in the acknowledgments
