    Voice Component Modeling (VCM) - I spent several months analyzing classic synthesizers and acoustic analog instruments, to try and find out what objectively gives them their "character" that some modern synthesizers don't have. I recorded hundreds of samples from classic VCO synths like the OBX, OBXA, Prophets, Yamaha CS80, MemoryMoog, Jupiter 4, Jupiter 8, and others... The common thread between all of them is that there are voice-by-voice offsets to each voice in these polyphonic instruments. These offsets are a result of voice boards having discreet electrical components that are never perfectly matched. The small variance between electrical performance on a voice by voice basis causes small offsets to fine tuning, envelope speeds, and various other parameters. When you play a chord, you get all these small offsets that create natural phasing / detuning / temporal offsets, creating a more lush, organic sound. Modern synths are often "too perfect" with too much parity between tuning and other parameters, giving them a more sterile or harsh sound.
    Advanced Modulation with the Rev2 Mod Matrix / Gated Seq
    I realized that with the advanced modulation capabilities of the Prophet Rev2, along with a creative usage of the gated sequencer, that this type of unique voice-by-voice behavior can be modeled within the Rev2 synthesizer... and it works great!

    A SoundSet for the Prophet Rev2
    This product is a digital download... It is a patch bank for the Prophet Rev2 keyboard or Prophet Rev2 rack unit. It will be delivered as a .sysex patch bank with 128 patches.
    There are many classic analog synth sounds, including basses, leads, synths, keys, analog strings, analog brass, pads and others. My focus was on creating sounds useful to songwriters or soundtrack composers. I'm a big fan of classic rock, new wave, 80s, alt rock, atmospheric and electronica. Lots of those type of sounds. In addition, I have included many acoustic instrument emulations, including electric pianos (Rhodes, Wurli, Unique), wind instruments (flutes, trumpets, horns), string instruments (violins, violas, ensemble) and organs.
    Many programs use layer stacks to achieve bigger sound, wider stereo image, or more complex multi-timbral sound design.
    Expressive, Dynamic Patches
    Almost all patches have perfomance modulations programmed in, using pressure and modulation wheel assignments to allow for dynamic performances. Dig into the keys, and you'll get vibrato, or other unique modulations to give your playing additional character. Some patches have significant multi-parameter changes through the sweep of the mod wheel or expression pedal. Expression pedal is highly recommended! On many of the patches I have completely maxed out the Rev2's extensive modulation matrix and performance modulation parameters.
    Digital Download, Sales Terms
    This product is a digital download only. You will receive a .sysex soundbank file. This file is only for use with the Prophet Rev2 Keyboard or Rack unit. Once purchased, there are no refunds or exchanges available. You agree to not copy, redistribute or resell any of the patches in this product. They are copyrighted and licensed for your use only.

    Lots of people are selling synth patches. Some are very good. Jason's VCM patches are on another level and even with a VST editor I am scratching my head as to how some patches are doing what they are doing. This is synthesizer knowledge and understanding way ahead of most patch makers. I dont think anybody else, including Sequential, is utilising the power of the Rev 2 to this extent. Well done Sir!

    Damn, these are some of the best Rev2 patches I’ve heard. I’ve been on the fence about picking up a Rev2 or P6. The Rev2 seems to have so much potential depending on how much you really dig into it

    • @CreativeSpiral
      @CreativeSpiral  3 роки тому +2

      Thanks! Yeah, the Rev2 is one of the most powerful/versatile analog poly synths on the market... really, 2nd only to the Moog One in terms of capabilities. The P6 is a great board as well, with excellent core sound, but not nearly as versatile... having 16 voices, and bi-timbral sound stacking makes the Rev2 a whole different beast... not to mention all the modulation/sequencing/lfos/envs, etc...

    • @Aaa-pz6nh
      @Aaa-pz6nh 3 роки тому

      @@CreativeSpiral Yeah that’s my dilemma the core sound of the P6 is really great. After reading about your VCM techniques it’s quite clever, now I understand why your patches sound great. The slight differences in tuning can really add some width and depth to the sound. To have that added warmth and depth along with the brighter inherit nature of the Rev2 makes its sound amazing.

      Nice! I love that patch... it was one of the last ones I added into the sound bank. The voice modeling is based on measurements I took from an Oberheim OBX... and the patch is actually a derivative of the Van Halen Jump patch I created... I spent like 10 hours on that patch, and then when I was finishing up the bank, I experimented with changing the envelopes and modulation a bit and came up with the "SlowJump" Brass/Pad. Anyways, thanks for the note - Glad you're enjoying it! I just got lost for 20 minutes on a live jam incorporating it ;)

      A couple of quick questions:
      1. This soundset totally blows me away, so I'm wondering if you're thinking of doing as second soundset for the Prophet Rev.2 Do you plan on doing another?
      2. I am no expert with sound design or synth architecture, so please correct me if I'm wrong, but it appears that both the Beringer Deepmind 12 & the Oberheim Matrix 6/6r/1000 have extensive mod-matrix functions like the Prophet Rev.2. Have you considered applying the deep understanding & impressive skills you demonstrate in this Rev.2 soundset to make patch sets for the Deepmind 12, Matrix 6/6r/1000, and other synths with similar mod-matrix capabilities?

      Thank you for the link to the article. I read it & I think I understood it...lol...I haven't ever dug deep into synth architecture or sound design, so I'll have to learn more now! ☺.
      Given how effective VCM has proven to be, is this something that could be added to synths via additions to firmware, or would a hardware change be required? Are there any commercially available synths that use VCM in their design & coding? I can't imagine anyone not wanting this improvement in the sound of an analogue synth.

    • @CreativeSpiral
      @CreativeSpiral  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks Jim! Yeah, I’ve been working on new patches… a combination of vintage voice modeling patches and stacked mod sequencer patches that show off what the Rev2 is capable of with the new OS 1.1.5.9.9

    • @CreativeSpiral
      @CreativeSpiral  2 роки тому

      Also, FYI: if you’re gotten my original VCM patch bank, I recommend updating to the new OS… the vintage VCM patches, and stereo stacks sound even better with latest OS.. more nuanced per voice character, where some of the programming I had done previously was being skipped … now the sequencer correctly advances through all the steps and gets all the details…

  • @daydreamjohnny

    These sound amazing and I will be grabbing them after I pull the trigger on a Rev 2. I'm curious, are you playing on a 8 or 16 voice here?
    I'm on the fence between the two.

    • @CreativeSpiral
      @CreativeSpiral  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks Johnny! I have a 16-voice. The patches will sound the same on 8 voice, but you may get voice stealing on some of the sounds that are stacked layers. When playing a stacked patch on 8-voice, that means there is effectively 4-voices... so for more complex chord play, or patches with longer release times, the note ends may be cut off. I definitely recommend the 16-voice, primarily for this reason... you can play stacked/layered patches and not worry about voice stealing. Note: voice stealing is not always a bad thing.. it has a characteristic sound to it and can sometimes even sound less muddy for certain playing scenarios... but generally its better to have the voices available.

      Yeah, there's a lot of OB8/ OBX/OBXA inspired sounds in this set... ie: modeling eight voices with distinct offsets per voice. In regards to the specific patch you linked to, looks to be a slow brass/pad type of sound using the OB8 2-pole filter. The filters on the Rev2 are a little different, but you could definitely get close to that sound on Rev2. There are 16 pads and 16 brass sounds included in this set... not sure if any are exactly like that, but there are a few that could be modified to match the envelope/filter sound fairly close.
