As part of the concept of “border covering tanks”, a specialized heavy tank under the symbol GPT-166 was designed for operations in mountainous terrain. To destroy the enemy in the folds of the terrain, he was armed with a 160-mm howitzer, which fired shells with a powerful high-explosive effect. The shells were placed in a mechanized ammunition rack (the selected shell is fed to the dispensing window, then the loader manually loads the gun) in the housing in front of the MTO. A “wavy” surface was used in the armor of the frontal part of the hull, which was supposed to increase the likelihood of projectiles ricocheting. Work on the project did not go beyond the sketches; it was closed due to high cost.
