    Each morning I stand at my door as the kids walk in and they give me a hug, handshake or high five! You could add high five too. They LOVE it!

    great video Tina, I find it shocking the uneven distribution of funds at schools across America. not only do you have large classes, but you pretty much have to fund and finance it off your own back. i admire you so much. you always want the best for your kids. let us know when you have the new dinners choose project up and running, I can't give much, but I'll happily give what I can. are the kindles around $45? you are doing an amazing job and i love love love your daily vlogs.

    When you were talking about your kiddos that do not speak English it brought me to tears...I can only imagine how scary and overwhelming it has to be for them! Will they get additional help from the school?

      I was thinking the same thing! What brave kiddos! And Tina is such a great teacher to take on teaching English! I wonder how the kids progress through the year. Kids are so resilient I'll bet the transformation is amazing. 😀

    I'd like to buy that book that you suggested, Don't Laugh at Me, but it costs $30 used. OMG! It must be terrific but I'll keep looking; it is way too high for my teacher budget.

    Tina,
    I am an ELL teacher and our district also received students from Yemen who don't speak a word of English. I am using Rosetta Stone with them and they really enjoy it. I think using the app that you're using and making the newcomers feel useful in your class is a great great idea! My teachers feel overwhelmed, though. They don't know how to help them in class, and I can't be there with them because I have other ELLs to take care of. Can you share me what you do in your class to support those students and not overwhelming yourself? How do you grade them when they are not able to do any of your work yet? Shookran (Thank you in Yemeni :) )

    I'm not a teacher and am old enough to find it utterly amazing that kids would be enrolled in school not speaking a word of English. That just seems wrong somehow. I love that there are people with your dedication and determination and skills in the classroom making it all work!

    • @pulguirock

      You have to start somewhere, right? Most people start their lives just knowing their mother tongue, as at the time goes by we learn other languages to be able to communicate with other people from other countries. Some kids have the luxury of growing up with parents that can teach them at least a couple of different languages from the beginning, but not everyone has that opportunity. So, in order to learn a new language you have to practice by writing, reading, speaking and listening. And, what a better place to do so than in school, kids learn super fast if they are in the right environment.

    32 students, maybe 34? God bless you! I was teaching 1st Grade last year and two weeks before returning to school I found out that I would be teaching 3rd grade instead. There were other changes which led to us have 1 Kindergarten teacher with 24 students, a 1st grade teacher with 22, and a 4th grade teacher with 28 students. All three of those teachers are complaining about their hectic classroom. Thank God for community schools; I myself only have 14 students. Now, if I was working in a regular pubic school I too would be working with a large number of students. The last 3rd grade classroom I worked in had 28 students.

    I had a girl come this past school year I. February from Moldova. Didn't speak a word of English except "bathroom." You will be surprised how quickly they pick up. Are you ESOL certified? My biggest suggestion is use tons of pictures and give them time to talk with their peers. It's amazing what they learn in such a short time!

      34 in one class!! At what point does your district decide to open another classroom or provide you with an aide? We have a cutoff and after that they either open up a new room or provide aides in the classroom or shared by a grade level.

    • @opallea
      @opallea 8 років тому +1

      Yes, each year children get a new teacher and a new class of friends. Sometimes a teacher will be with a class for two years. This doesn't happen often though.

      Yes, rarely do students in elementary school receive the same teacher two years on row. It is because teachers are assigned a specific grade to teach and they usually will stay with the grade for a few years. The students move up each grade every year. In middle and high school, students have 7-9 different teachers for each subject in school.

  • @SernaAhlen

    BTW, do you try to learn the different languages your students know? I teach at a Navajo school (my students are not proficient in English or Navajo) and I'm always being taught by my students. It's quite comical when I try - I always mess up. I know you have many languages to deal with and was just wondering.

    • @tinabietler
      @tinabietler  8 років тому +1

      No, I haven't. I would need to learn about 9 different languages! More than I can handle. :)
