  • The Bells Beach Easter Contest was only four years old when massive waves confronted the competitors at Bells Beach on Easter Sunday 1965. In this video surfer and noted surf photographer Barrie Sutherland recalls the huge waves that rolled into Bells Beach on that day. Spectacular photos from this day can be seen at the Surf World Museum Torquay as part of the Bells Gold exhibition.

I grew up on the Mornington Peninsula, started surfing in 1974 at Point Leo, Shoreham, Balnarring, Flanders, Cape Shank, Gunnamatta, Rhy Back Beach, Portsea & so on.
I've seen Bastrait heave huge monster swell close outs, that close out from Cape Shank to Port Fillip Bay Heads, Quarras. HUGE WAVES

My uncle Bonza won Bells that year, pity he didn't talk more about the brave feats of others

I love how someone ALWAYS chimes in with "Oh...just LOOKS like"... They weren't there and Barrie made a good, educated and informed choice. Kind and warm regards :)

I remember as kid driving down the old road with many of us kids in the back of the car, no seat belts like today and standing on the cliff face where the spray of the waves was so strong and the wind was amazing it was so scary, but it is something you never forget. There were people surfing up the creek, it was huge.
A once in a life time experience.

The guy Paddling out in the main Photo is Roger Falahey, a true gentleman who plays his role down, but that day should never be underestimated, it is said that this wave was the biggest ever seen at Bells

i surfed a bigger wave in 1974 at Bell's, I free fell dropped about 2 metres down a huge face that had already peeled over, i miraculously regained my footing only to be absolutely obliterated by the huge lip of the breaking wave, people who saw it said it was reminiscent of Waimea bay. They estimated the wave to be atleast 18 foot. When the lip hit me on the head it actually cleaved a split about 11 inches down to my jaw.It was almost like youd expect in a comic book someone splitting you with an axe or a spade, fortunately it missed all of my neural pathways needed for normal human function although it left me with a scar about 2 inch wide, straight between my eyes ,down to my lower chin that resembles a fissure down a large piece of granite.Im lucky i didnt die that day

Sometimes discretion is the better part of valour. I've made similar calls at certain places... One particular day at "Boulders" when I was based in Ballina in 1987, it was actually holding 10 - 12ft and about half s dozen guy's, including my housemate actually made it out from the "Iron Peg" (My best mate's grandfather, Carrie Turner had helped pit the peg in for the fisho's to use!) ... needless to say, not a single one of them did ANYTHING other than became caught inside as the line's marched in... no Lennox crew to be seen, not a wave caught and several broken board's the result. When my mate cane in, he was laughing his head off, saying it was just a "mongreling" after mongreling (beating). No set's, no let - up or lull, just wave after wave and it was amazing to just see. I reckon I made the right choice to opt out LOL!
