Kalpana Chawla was an American astronaut and the first female of Indian origin to go to space. She first flew on Space Shuttle Columbia in 1997 as a mission specialist and primary robotic arm operator.
Chawla died in the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster which occurred on February 1, 2003 when the Columbia disintegrated over Texas during re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere, with the death of all of seven crew members, shortly before it was scheduled to conclude its 28th mission, STS-107.
दुनिया में सभी लोगों को एक न एक दिन इस खूबसूरत जहां को अलविदा कहना होता है, मगर दुनिया में कुछ लोग सिर्फ जीने के लिए आते हैं, मौत महज उनके शरीर को खत्म करती है. ऐसे ही जांबाजों में से एक भारत की बहादुर बेटी कल्पना चावला थीं. भले ही 1 फरवरी 2003 को कोलंबिया स्पेस शटल के दुर्घटनाग्रस्त होने के साथ कल्पना की उड़ान रुक गई लेकिन आज भी वह दुनिया के लिए एक मिसाल है.
नासा वैज्ञानिक और अंतरिक्ष यात्री कल्पना चावला का जन्म हरियाणा के करनाल में हुआ था. कल्पना अंतरिक्ष में जाने वाली प्रथम भारतीय (उन्होंने अमेरिका की नागरिकता ले ली थी) महिला थी. उनके पिता का नाम बनारसी लाल चावला और मां का नाम संज्योती था. कल्पना ने फ्रांस के जान पियर से शादी की जो एक फ्लाइंग इंस्ट्रक्टर थे.

Chawla obtained a degree in aeronautical engineering from Punjab Engineering College before immigrating to the United States and becoming a naturalized citizen in the 1980s. She earned a doctorate in aerospace engineering from the University of Colorado in 1988, having previously obtained her masters degree from the University of Texas. She began working at NASA's Ames Research Center the same year, working on power-lift computational fluid dynamics.

Once in bombay she came to my tyre shop with his brother who was well known to me , than she got first pilot license . sometime in 1980 . her family was well known to me . her brother in law also died in helicopter accident , he was in navy .

Former shuttle project manager Wayne Hale revealed in his blog that his director said this to him after knowing the issue "You know, there is nothing we can do about damage to the thermal protection system. If it has been damaged it's probably better not to know. I think the crew would rather not know.
Don't you think it would be better for them to have a happy successful flight and die unexpectedly during entry than to stay on orbit, knowing that there was nothing to be done, until the air ran out?"
Hale also include & said -
"If there were some magical way to find out Columbia's status, a week after launch it was too late. The best case scenario, which had virtually no chance of succeeding, would only have worked if action had been taken on the second or third day of the flight; by the sixth day it was too late."
But now for every mission after 2005, Nasa always kept another orbiter in an advanced state of readiness for a launch-on-need rescue mission.

sir i have done a lot of research on this..I can tell you some facts..Nasa scientists knew that a piece of foam did hit the left wing of the shuttle during the launch but they didnot know or they were not sure of damage..they didnot know about the damage to left wing because they thought that the foam cannot damage a wing because it is very light weight and it was a common phenomenon during every shuttle launch that some part of the foam covering the external fuel tank comes off during every launch. some of the nasa scientists wanted to ask for permission for military satellites to take pictures of the left wing to check for the damage but these requests were denied for which the people who denied the requests were removed from the space programme..and also sir you said it is better to not tell the astronauts that there is a problem but actually the fact is that nasa didnot know of the damage right upto the last minute when the sensors started to give higher temperature readings than normal on the left wing..it happened because the foam that hit the left wing made a hole in it and when shuttle was entering the earths atmosphere the temperature was so high because it was travelling at a speed of approx. 18000 miles per hour and the heat and atmospheric gases started entering the left wing through that damaged part which led to the disintegration of the shuttle and eventually it exploded..so it is wrong to say that nasa didnt tell the astronauts actually nasa did inform the astronauts of the abnormal high temperature readings and the tire pressure and the commander of the shuttle Rick Husband acknowledged it and it was also his last words after which there was no contact with the shuttle and mission control centre. And also even if Nasa knew in advance of the damage it would have been very hard to repair it because there were no repair kits on board but after this incident Nasa equiped the shuttles with onboard repair kits and also now it is mandatory for the astronauts to check the shuttle for any external damage during launch.
After all this mishaps-
Now for every mission after 2005, Nasa always kept another orbiter in an advanced state of readiness for a launch-on-need rescue mission. 👍

था, लेकिन उस समय ऐसी टेक्नोलॉजी शायद विकसित नहीं हो सकी थी कि कोई दूसरा शटल वहां भेजकर उनको बचाया जा सके। नासा वालों को पहले ही पता चल गया था कि शटल में खराबी आ चुकी है लेकिन वे चाहकर भी कुछ नहीं कर सकते थे। इसीलिए उन्होंने इस खराबी के बारे में ऐस्ट्रोनॉट्स को नहीं बताया। नासा को पहले ही मालूम चल चुका था कि अब कुछ नहीं हो सकता।

क्या nasa या किसी दूसरे देश का कोई दूसरा स्पेस शटल भेजकर क्रू मेंबर को उस में ट्रांसफर किया जा सकता था अंतरिक्ष में ऐसे बहुत से अंतरिक्ष स्टेशन भी हैं जहां लोग सालों रह सकते हैं अपनी जरूरतों में मदद हासिल कर सकते हैं क्या इस किस्म की कोई मदद हासिल नहीं हो सकती रही होगी या फिर यह मिशन ही आत्मघाती था nasa को इस किस्म की कोई जानकारी हासिल करनी रही हो जिसके लिए उस स्पेस शटल का एक विशेष कक्षा में चक्कर लगाना जरूरी था भले इसमें क्रू मेंबर की जान ही क्यों ना चली जाए क्योंकि ऐसे मिशन में खर्च बहुत ज्यादा होता है तो शायद कोशिश लक्ष्य हासिल करने की की गई ना कि क्रू मेंबर की जान बचाने की।
हो सकता था मगर ये मिशन १६ दिन का था इतने कम समय मे दूसरा शटल भेजना मुमकिन नहीं था शायद
