Love watching you! Your style is so much like mine... “it is alive and wants to grow” when potatoes start shooting eyes, I feel like it is my spiritual obligation to plant it. 🥰
4:20 😲 I've been wondering about that and was sure most say, NEVER do that (cut the top off). I don't know if I've got the guts to do it. I'm going to search your other videos for more on this. Thank you so much. Different planting zone here, but we still learn from and enjoy you immensely!
Man, I hate grass. You have inspired me and this year I'll have about 1/2 of my 1/2 acre in food (double dug beds, in-progress food forest, rows) 1/4 in wildflowers and ornamentals, and the final 1/4 in grass that I encourage my kids to dig holes in. Buying a book with the crazy name of "Grow or Die" five years ago was one of the best decisions I ever made. Thanks for all your awesome work, education, and inspiration, brother!
Watching you plant in January while it's freezing rain in my Zone 6a area makes me feel some kinda way. The really weird bit for me is I'm planning on planting a bunch of the same stuff as you did.
Right after I posted my question I heard you say alabamee 👍 lol I’m in NW Florida like 20mins from Alabama line, appreciate your info all these years thx!
You mentioned Yates Apple. I wasn't aware they were still around. They were developed/cultivated in a small town just 7 miles from me, Yatesville Georgia by a Mr. Yates. I will have to look for them.
Why is there no mulch on that bed behind you David? You must have incredible green fingers to get plants to grow on that naked soil. I love your videos. Whenever you mention Alabama, that 70's song 'Sweet Home Alabama', pops into my head.
You should have put some seaweed or rotted veges or a fish head in the soil to feed the trees. I rot down weeds and grass in water to throw in the hole first. Love the idea of a grocery isle garden
@@davidthegood same at my beach here. I found 1 piece of seaweed and have continued to soak it for nearly 2 yrs to make tea lol up north I could get wheelbarrow loads of it and put on the gardens.
I love turnips and their greens. Glad to see your still kicking around DTG. Update us on your new book and are you doing the "one seed challenge" this year? Stay frosty!
@@davidthegood Look at Mr. Scott(Black Gumbo Gardener), he is doing the challenge. Hoss tools, Deep south homestead and a few other you tuber have done it in the past.
I wasn't going to watch, 30 minutes!!! But I did and I really enjoyed it!!! I ALWAYS learn something from you!!! I should have known, Always Good!!! TY
Love your music! I lost my marigolds in a hard freeze we just had. I'm in 9B, north of Tampa. Oh no, a landlord again. Why plant fruit trees then? What if you have to move again? What's the fun in that? WOW what a huge property!!!
We are food foresting in Tallahassee, 8b. The Joy's apple from Just Fruits and Exotics is a very vigorous grower compared to the other apples we have tried here. Maybe give it a shot.
I am just now finally watching all your videos about this system because I am ENAMORED with this idea. I've been working for years on designing some kind of system blending wide row gardening like this with the permaculture orchard principles but this is even better than mine I think. I love it. I may have missed it somewhere, but how far apart are you putting your trees/bushes? Absolutely genius. Excited to see how it keeps evolving!
I've got Sequoia strawberries as well and they've done just fine. Taste pretty good, too. On the apple trees, I know you know of SkillCult and what not...have you watched his pruning videos? He doesn't prefer the cut low method for apples/pears, which is how I pruned some of mine as well, but I'm trying his methods going forward.
@@davidthegood Yeah, I believe you’re right. I think my brain got so used to seeing the red color that I turned them into raspberries. I rarely ever saw them ripen to the actual blackberry color. Birds and weather and all.
I've tried Gooseberry, Pineberry and Jostaberry several times in Mobile County, they always die here. I think the Summer is just too much for them. Strawberries around fruit trees works well, though.
I've just finished reading Grow or Die and Compost Everything, and both were great!!👍👍 The only downside is I am now also having recurring Kate Moss/racoon nightmares 😔....but otherwise, excellent books!!!
Thank you for sharing what a wonderful fruit forest you're going to have, Well since I'm in zone 10B I’m already picking strawberries but I cannot get any apricots to fruit I know there is one that will grow here but I haven't found it

I don't know if my seriously sandy soil is a blessing or a curse? Naturally no-till? haha I've been kind of adding biochar as I go. I originally got the idea from one of your swampwater videos. I feel blessed that I live in the tropics and can grow year round but I am still a little jelly about those potatoes. I'm not into eating GMO but if they make a potato that tastes like a potato and grows here, I'll cave. :P
When you lop off the entire top of a young fruit tree like that do we expect it to grow several branches at more desirable angles? I am just a noob, but I thought if you cut any of the young fruit tree, it only branches out from the bud closest to the cut. I'm not sure what causes multiple branches to start. I've got a really badly shapen peach tree with some already formed hard wood on the top. If I can start it over, I would.
Last year when the world ended, and I could not find seed potatoes anywhere I started planting store bought ones... I would look for the ones that looked old and has baby eyes starting and they all grew great. Pretty sure they were russets. I still like my kinebecks, and Pontiacs, but I am glad to know that many store bought ones do just fine.
Hi David, I’m going to try tjr this method, God willing. I’m from the sultanate of Oman. It’s very hot and humid. Plants like amaranth, moringa, sweet potatoes and cassava grow well here. Our land is unshaded and our soil is sandy. Should I plant my rows East to West to try create as much shade as possible within the rows?
I never thought about checking out Tractor Supply for stuff to try out. You in 9a or 8b? I guess I'll be a few weeks behind you, but will look for some plants there soon, I've not been impressed with what Lowe's/Home Depot have had the last couple of years. (I'm in 8a)
Lol. I'm a vegan by proxy. I love to eat the animals that eat alot of veggies. Hehehe. Actually i believe in a well rounded meal including lots of veggies and meats but very little breads. I do love my taters though.
Another question. I have a 3Another question. I have a 3 For four-year-old goji Berry Bush . It has produced lots of little goji berries that taste terrible. Am I doing something wrong, is it the wrong species, or is that the way goji berries are?
Tractor Supply is a chain of large "farm stores" with locations across the US. Their pricing is generally fair to good. They carry almost everything a small farmer might need. Not just "tractor supplies."
I need more Organic Farming themed hip hop in my life !!
Vegan bacon made from vegetable fed pigs had me rolling! You should make that one into a t-shirt XD

Wow no weeds. I constantly battle nutsedge and creeping Charlie. It always wins
im in midstate sc (8b) and strawberries do really well here! they dont seem to mind the stupid hot summers so long as they get enough wind to breathe
